I'm running a SMF forum (so mysql/php), I use IMAP/qmail, spamassasin enabled. I'm specifically curious about saslauthd and xinetd services, are really need to be enabled?

Remote Installs Of CentOS

Aug 20, 2007

We have been looking at utilizing something like nocmonkey or similar to make OS reinstalls easier on our servers. My real need is to be able to do this remotely if and when I can't have someone onsite do this to help speed up turning up a server where a client has cancelled, and we are reinstalling CentOS to turn up to new client.

I'm almost certain there is no quick and easy way to do a OS reinstall remotely without utilizing something like NOCmonkey, correct?

I do have KVM/IP so I was curious if there is a way remotely to do this that is possible because of the KVM/IP?

Virtualization - Enterprise Installs? VMWare, Xen, Virtual Iron?

Aug 14, 2007

A company i am working with is looking to install a VMWare setup comprising of something like this :

6x Dual Proc Quad Core Nodes with 16GB RAM
2x Clustered iSCSN SAN Nodes

I am intending on purchasing the full suite including DRS/HA/VMotion.

Now this is all well and good but the software pricing is absolutely horrendous! So my question to you chaps is :

Is anyone using the latest Virtual Iron or Xen Enterprise in a high end environment?

Obviously VMWare is the market leader, the big boys are using it and its something you can bank on. (literally! HSBC use it ALOT!)

Is it even worth looking at VI/Xen for something like this? The cost would be like a quarter of the total cost of a VMWare license.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Using Remote Database Server On Separate Installs?

Nov 24, 2014

Is it possible to use a remote database server on two or more Plesk installations without issue?

Plesk A (192.168.1.1):

Local MySQL (default)
Remote A MySQL (192.168.1.5)
Plesk B (192.168.1.2):

Local MySQL (default)
Remote A MySQL (192.168.1.5)

... etc etc. Is that possible? It'll allow me to create databases on the remote server from both/all the Plesk servers without conflict?

Anyone Else Offering VPS With These Specs

I have a small VPS with Serverways and to be honest I have had no problems with it for a week or so - suprising when you see the spec!

My question is - are there any other providers around the globe (looking for VPS servers all over the place) that would sell me a VPS with the following specs:

CPU 100MHZ
100 MB RAM
10GB SATA (Could probably do with less if needed)
No control panel
100GB Bandwidth on- 100mbps port.
4.90 USD

Offering Subversion Hosting

Jun 9, 2008

I have been asked by a client to develop a solution that can offer subversion project hosting. Basically a user will signup for an account and be able to create different repositories and manage them and get RSS feeds for the commit actions n stuff...

Now i am thinking of using PHP for this but I am not sure how will I setup the server (webhost) .. should I recommend him to go with dedicated server? Since he wants to limit the space for each user how can that be done?

Web Host Not Offering Custom DNS

Apr 15, 2007

My [new] host doesn't offer custom DNS records. Obviously, this upsets me somewhat as I need some custom DNS records (mainly A Records).

Would this be possible:

I've got a few servers with SoftLayer. If I pointed my domain to SoftLayer's nameservers and handled the DNS there, could I simply forward everything to their servers from SoftLayer's "Manage DNS" (such as www, mail, ftp, etc), then create the custom DNS myself? Would this work?

Hope that's clear enough to understand!

If not, is there another possible work-around? I need custom A Records!

Best Method Of Offering Clients Hosting?

Mar 25, 2007

I'm in the process of forming a web development business and am currently interested in learning the various methods of offering 3rd party services and accounts. How to offer hosting is my current dilemma; I can of course refer the client to a host and receive a referral kick-back, but the idea of reselling hosting accounts is also appealing, though I have no knowledge currently as to how this works, and I'm basically just curious how other's manage this aspect of the business. I do not mind offering customer service on hosting accounts, so this is not an issue

Offering Hosting As Part Of A Web Design Contract

Are there any web designers/developers who offer hosting to their clients as part of their website creation package. I am toying with the idea of only creating websites for people who host with me. I currently have a colo server, but only use it for personal things. So I have no experience with the needs and demands of clients in regards to hosting. What are some of your experiences with hosting for clients? Is it worth it?
