Encrypted FS On Linux VPS
Nov 17, 2007
I'd like to develop a mail/imap server on a vps. I'm wondering if there's a way to store all the maildir boxes in an encrypted format, so that you could't see them on the host server. Of course i'm not really concerned that the vps provider will sneak into my filesystem and read my email, lol, and even if it would is not like i have something to hide, but that would be just to explore :-) So, on a vps you can't custom-partition your filesystem to mount /home/ as an encrypted partition, so it seems i could use "loop encrypted" filesystems ... As far as i understand it would be basically a file, lying in the master filesystem, that i could mount as /home partition and easily backup, by the way. Does anyone has experience with this configuration ? If yes, please share I'm wondering what's the best software i could use for the purpose?

I need to be able to access email passwords in plain text (not encrypted). I'm running with updates so as to not force encryption, which I'm told is a one-way deal. I'm going to have to go to new hardware soon, as I'm finding the hardware starting to fail.
I understand the "mail_auth_view" utility shows the passwords, and was wondering if it will decrypt them for you?
If not, how can I keep the behavior of non-encrypted email passwords so that the customer administrators still have access to them for their users? I know a new install forces encryption, which is why I can't do that. How can I preserve the non-encrypted passwords and move to new hardware? This seems to be a deal breaker for my customers.

I recently stumpled upon this really good domain name which is squatted. I did a who.is look up on the domain so that I may contact the owner but all I get is this encrypted email address:
e-mail: 804c93ec0559b7bea8c91fcbf390296-bh867@contact.gandi.net
Does this mean that the domain owner has chosen to hide his email so that he wont be contacted?

Most of my background is the Linux/Mac world, but I do have ample Windows skill set, just not as refined or aware of all the available applications in Windows world, geared toward Joe User.
My accountant needs to run two sets of backups. First, he wants to backup his documents to an offsite location (space on his web hosting service) and he wants them to be encrypted on the web hosting server, which is understandable and recommended.
Short of installing TrueCrypt and using Filezilla with a manual process , is there any free or low-cost (but well supported) that would automatically upload revised documents and data files in encrypted form? This would not be very much data, just simple documents and accounting data files.
Secondly, he wants to have a "snapshot" of his HD to a USB portable drive (standard 2.5 HD). On Linux, I'd recommend Rsync, on Mac, Rsync or SuperDuper (and others), but on Windows, any recommendations? I see Unison, etc. I would just want it to update any files that have changed to make subsequent backups run much faster, such as only 15-18 minutes (depending on amount of data changed) and make the drive bootable, so in the event he looses his HD in his laptop, he could boot from the USB portable drive and be back up and running.
While I know I could easily figure out all this on a more manual basis, looking for things that would be friendly for Joe User to use and/or be something that can be setup and would run pretty much on it's own, assuming the backup drive was connected or system was on the Internet to upload the files, etc.

I am trying to install Magento on my apache server. I am running into the dreaded mcrypt issue as Magento needs it to run. I have now been googling for the past few hours and have gotten nowhere.
Here are my details:
Linux
Centos 5.5
PHP 5.3.3
x86_64
Plesk 12
I have tried installing all sorts of different repos and it just isn't working.
When I try to install using # yum install php-mcrypt I get the following:
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Package php-mysql is obsoleted by php-mysqlnd, trying to install php-mysqlnd-5.5.13-3.el5.remi.x86_64 instead
--> Processing Dependency: php53-gd for package: psa-php53-configurator
--> Processing Dependency: php53-imap for package: psa-php53-configurator

Most if not all the applications that we produce use PHP/MySQL and we're currently on Windows/IIS environment.
We're looking to change our hosting company and upgrade our servers and I'm eager to migrate over Linux/Apache.
The only problem is, some of our applications use the COM object to integrate with PowerPoint, can this still be done on Linux.
Also is anybody aware of any other potential floors when migrating over?

To make ASP run under Linux, PHP script files are saved as ASP extensions and are redirected to the PHP interpreter. So it looks like the server serves ASP files, but these are actually PHP scripts.

I have Debian Etch 4.0 and am intending to run a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) installation on Debian.
I have setup AMP on windows boxes to run successfully. I have very good microsoft O/S skills but have vague skills around Linux which I need to learn quickly for my job. First of all I need to setup a LAMP installation so does anyone have a recommendation of a simple and easy LAMP installation step-by-step solution for me?

I have recently purchased a GoDaddy Virtual Server running Fedora 7, with the Plesk Control Panel 8.3 installed - if I had remembered this site then I probably wouldn't have chosed GoDaddy, however my colleague runs a GoDaddy server and it works like a dream. I have only one domain on the site, running Boonex Dolphin 6.1. The site however runs EXCEPTIONALLY slow.
I have spoken with many friends that use Dolphin and they have no major issues. I also did a search on Google and found that there appear to be no major speed issues with Dolphin.
The site I am running is http://www.tkd-web.com
I wondered if some of you guys could take a look and let me know if it looks like a hosting issue or a scripting issue. Or what information do you need to know to find out the answer to this problem.
I would be really grateful to anyone that can even point me in the right direction, as I don't want to go off and start shouting the odds about GoDaddy etc, I just want to find the most effective solution to my issue.

I am currently with a company operating out of the Netherlands, however for what I am spending I do not feel I am receiving timely responses to support tickets (I'm talking days with no reply, at all). So, I am looking to switch. My current budget is around $300 USD/mo, however, I can spend more if the deal is right.
I need a host that is not easily scared off by American DMCA take-down notices. Please understand, nothing I do is illegal. In fact, to be blunt, I write software for online games and charge a fee to users who wish to access my software. I was using dedicated hosts within the United States to satisfy my customer base, however, one particular company, Nexon America (just one of the companies whose online games I develop software for) more or less got me dropped by every host I went to. I host absolutely no copyrighted files of any kind, images, textual, video, or binary.

for a project i'm setting up a WDS server for rapid deployment of Windows 2008 servers.
The information regarding WDS and automated deployments is clear for me.
The only, and probably biggest problem is how to configure the linux dhcp/pxe server to able to boot an image from the WDS to start the installation.
Unfortunately I haven't found much information about it.
I hope some one here can push me in the right direction.

We have a nameserver(DNS) on freebsd which the other linux admin works on.
We had switched webservers and that created a problem to an ftp user who uploads her pics to our webserver.
www.sitename.com/~username/ is her account
and she uploads at ftp://sitename.com
since we moved the server she cant do that, now i thought of this which the other admin says its not possible but i dont believe so.
what if i add a dns alias entry as (cname)
www.sitename.com/~username/ point to old server
ftp://sitename.com point to old server
www.sitename.com (new website main domain) point to new server
can i do this?

I have a linux server with cPanel and 500GB Disk Space. After investigating I think I would have the following partitions.
/
/boot
/home
/dev/shm
/tmp
/usr
/var
how much to allow to each partition. I will be using the server for hosting accounts, shared and resellers.
Also what would you recommend the swap file size be?
