I wanted to ask you guys why some hosting companies ask you if you want either linux or windows when you are buying a hosting plan?....does it have anything do to with the way the control panel works or something like that?. I have created a few websites on a host that has linux on its general server info as its operating system. But I have winxp not linux installed on my pc. So my question is what difference it makes if the server is using linux or windows and whats the best choice when you buy a hosting plan.

if i were to do it through my ISP- would it just depend on what they use? or would i get a choice?
I'm thinking of upgrading my shared hosting account to a VPS account, but I do not know which to go for. Right now I'm using Linux for my website. I do understand that there are differences between Linux and Windows. What I don't understand is why would someone choose Linux over Windows or Windows over Linux. If I understand correctly, I would be able to install applications such as mIRC on windows via Remote Desktop. That's something I like. However, I never controlled my website on a Windows computer before.
So basically what are the differences between Linux VPS and Windows VPS?
so we are in a situation where we need to upgrade our hosting situation. We are pretty excited about Rackspace, but there is one fairly large issue that we need to overcome.
We currently run a Windows based server with a MySql Db. Rackspace (due to contractual deals) do not support that combination. If you want MySql Db then you have to go with the Linux product.
So, i can't very easily change my db from MySql to MSSql. Is there issues from going from a Windows Server to Linux Server? I have never dealt with a Linux Server, but the good thing is, the folks at Rackspace seem very helpful and would probably be able to step me through the processes.
what are your thoughts? should i switch Server types, or Database Types?
Is it possible to run WINDOWS + LINUX VPS Nodes using HYPER - V on WINDOWS 2008?

I want to combine my www with non www site via a 301 permanent redirect. My goal is to combine my page links in hopes that one day Google will increase my page ranking (which is sadly at 1). I don't think that combining them now (about 100 links each) will do anything to my PR but I do want it set up properly now so it's all set.
I have been reading all over the Internet on how to do this and working with my site host: Go Daddy. It's been a struggle but I believe that because I'm on a shared Windows server, there is not a solution for me to do this. If I was on a dedicated server I could do it through IIS but that option is not available for those on a shared server.
A posting I read from someone else who is also on Go Daddy (on another site) said he went and transferred his site from Windows to Linux and then was able to do the 301 redirect.
I don't understand what Windows, Linux, Apache, etc. means. My site is very simple: advertisingspark dot com. Can I transfer to Linux? Should I transfer to Linux or Apache?
Is this going to be too complicated for me? Or should I have someone else host my site? My annual fee is due in about a month so it's a good time for me to switch if I should.
I don't know if it is relevant but I had a website designer create my site and then I edit it myself in a cheap editing tool. I know basic HTML (I'm sure my designer is cringing!) If I switch to Linux or Apache, can I no longer work in html files?
a speaker at a meet-up stated that the only reason Linux is a more popular server platform is that kids starting hosting companies do not need to pay for the license...
whereas college educated techies prefer the windows platform for their servers..
So I thought I would get some opinions from the pro's... which is the overall best server platform
Windows... or Linux
My website is compiled with mysql and php.
I am deciding platform it will work on. Should i go with which one? any pros and cons do you know?
I have a Windows 2008 Server Running TCAdmin for Gameserver hosting and another server to VPS hosting (Running Linux-OVZ Kernel). Both have backup disks with the same capacity of main disk. What I need is to make a backup in the two cases that can be restaured with a simple Cable change. I have searched a lot but haven't found anything.

Which one is better?
I've gone through 3 servers lately, upgrading each time. All three have been linux this far, but I'm really not accustomed to it and don't like running on something I'm not familiar with.
On the other hand, I'm very familiar with Windows 2003.
So, what are your experiences running a vbulletin forum website with windows 2003? Any huge security flaws with Win2k3 compared to CentOS? Would I be able to use SSH to tunnel and remote desktop into the Win2k3 box? It'd be so refreshing to be able to use a gui instead of command prompts.
I see a quad core with 8gb for under $150 right now, compared to my current dual core with 2gb of ram I think it'd definitely be a huge improvement.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been a user of sitepoint for quite a while now. I am developing software applications at present and keep bumping my head into the same old question.
Which is better, Linux or Windows servers. (Probably a question which depends on what they are used for of course.) In this case, they would be used to store a database for the application and therefore communicate with it etc.
The choice is, do I develop the application in .net and use windows or do I go down the PHP route and use Linux.
This is the options that have been explained to me, of course I am not a developer myself so am just hearing the advice I am told.
i want to move my db to windows server so i backup db using (in linux server)
HTML Code:
mysqldump -u root -p123 zode > backup/b_zode.sql
and
when i restored db using (in windows server) mysql -u root -p123 zode < backup/b_zode.sql characters are bad (like Æ € or A1/2)
I have windows and linux both are connected through dlink switch, but these are not communicating. How can I setup the network to communicate each other? I have linux box with samba. I am not sure how exactly I need to setup the network.
View 8 Replies View RelatedLinux ... why?
1 - linux hosts are abundant, prices are cheaper.
2 - linux hosts almost always accommodate php/mysql, which is the most common combo in doing web development projects these days - hence, there are many companies and freelancers in the market who are doing these work for reasonable rates. just check elance.com, rentacoder.com and the like to see the abundance of projects opened and done in php/mysql and the sheer number of l.a.m.p. developers.
3 - hackers dont like microsoft stuff. there is a psychological tendency to hack microsoft stuff rather than linux. .asp extension is kinda a fodder for many script kiddies, like waving a flag saying 'come here play with us'.
4 - the competition in linux hosting market causes hosts to offer more quality service.
I'm currently hosting some websites using XAMPP/Apache/MySQL (obviously with heavily edited configs) on Windows. The largest site has around 40,000 forum members and grows extensively every day.
Would I see better benefits buying a Linux/*nix server for web hosting needs? What flavour of Linux/*nix would be best suited out of the following options:
CentOS 4 (32 bit)
CentOS 4 (64 bit)
CentOS 5 (32 bit)
CentOS 5 (64 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (32 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (64 bit)
Fedora Core 6 (32 bit)
Fedora Release 7 (32bit)
FreeBSD 6.2 (32 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (64 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (64 bit)
Also, would using a control panel such as cPanel (I'd say Plesk, but very bad experience with it on Windows) be beneficial?
The above would be going on a single process Quad Core with 4GB RAM.
I have insalled windows in hda and linux on hdb, but after I installed grub loader it is coming to grub prompt as this:
grub>
someone suggested to do the follwing comand
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinux....
boot
I am not sure about this this line:
root (hd0,0)
What exactly trying to do?
This question, and many questions relating to this I am sure must have reasoning behind it. It basicly relates down to the following;
Why do game servers use up more CPU on Linux, opposed to Windows?
Some people say it doesnt, and that is true for some games, but most games I have found, the CPU usage of the game on a Linux based server is far higher.
Just as an example, most Steam games.
I really would like to know why, and how it could be reduced. What are some things I can install, or configure to make game servers run more smoothly or use less CPU on Linux?
If anyone has any ideas & thoughts related to this, please let me/us know, for im sure this is beneficial to all.
Just to add in, I use CentOS 4.6 Final.
a while back i had good experience with windows vps.i could remote login, and run things and just relax.
i am looking for ubuntu desktop vps, or any linux desktop vps, that has gui. i think this will be cheaper because there is no license fee to pay unlike windows.
i am looking to purchase around 20 of these small vps, for a project, so i would like the price per vps to be as low as possible.
On a Linux box, I know how to set a file to CHMOD 666 permissions. How do you set world writable permissions to a file on a Windows server?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 cPanel DNSonly cluster setup for all our hosting operations.
However, we are adding a Windows Domain Forest (for Outlook "push-mail") for this the windows server needs to be its own DNS server. We are also planning to host sites on the windows server (no control panel).
Is there any way that I can allow cPanel to use Windows DNS as the new "cluster" and update/delete/add records of DNS to the windows machines?
Same would apply to this question, we are thinking about adding a Directadmin test box, but we want to keep our NS1 and NS2 cluster so they all work with it. Is it possible? What is the feature called if you can't elaborate on it so I can research it?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI need to remove CentOS from an old office PC. Dont get me wrong I use Linux almost on everything but for specific reason I need to get XP back into this old AMD PC.
I cannot install XP. I cannot remove Linux. This install is devil. It will not let me remove it. I tried everything. XP disk goes black screen and stays there, this is happens with some hardware and you have to remove all Linux partitions to me the Windows XP disk install start.
The problem I CANT remove it.
I go to rescue mode, or interactive, mode, it doesnt matter, I cannot remove linux.
"fisk -l"
Go to my partition
fdisk /dev/sda2
d for delete and it just outputs:
No partition is defined yet!
I tried lots of ways around it and always that message. Linux doesnt let me remove the partitions.
How in the world do I get XP back now?
