East Coast Carrier Neutral Facilities

Oct 9, 2007

The company I'm currently working for is looking at colo space on the East Coast. I already have a quote from Equinix for their Ashburn DC4 - but I'm trying to do some due diligence and shop around a bit.

We're looking at 5 cabinet cages, and we have moderately high power requirements. The Equinix DC4 gives us 32kVA total availability across the 5 cabs.

Can anyone recommend other comparable facilities on the East Coast, or recommend Equinix resellers?

Rough Idea Of Pricing In A Carrier-neutral NYC Facility

Oct 8, 2007

telling me about your offerings, or trying to convince me about out of area datacenters because of the risk of terrorism, cost, or alien invasion, I'm not seriously shopping around, just doing a bit of initial research.

With that disclaimer, what's a rough expectation of pricing for a NYC, carrier neutral datacenter for 1 cabinet with 60 amps of 110v? Preferrably somewhere that Internap is available.

VPS On The East Coast

Jun 24, 2008

I have been looking for a VPS on the east coast (near New York). I am looking to spend around $30, but I need 500GB or more of bandwidth. It would be very preferable for the host to allow IRC connections. I have found a couple hosts that fulfill both of these, but at the moment VPS Empire is looking the best. They allow IRC for an extra $2 a month, which is very reasonable.

I would like to see if you guys have any other recommendations or suggestions for me.

Web Hosts On East Coast USA

Aug 26, 2008

I've been searching over the last few days for web hosts whose servers are located on the east coast of the USA, but haven't been able to find anything suitable.

I've searched on this forum, but either companies don't tend to post where their servers are locatd or my search criteria isn't working.

Either way, would anyone be able to recommend some east coast web hosts or just list some that you know of?

East Coast Colocation

Jul 18, 2008

After two and a half years I am upgrading my server that hosts my CS server. Unfortunately, my host will not allow me to upgrade it and keep the special I got from them those years ago.

So I am looking for colocation on the east coast (I have players from Belgium and surrounding areas) with the following:

1U Server Colocation
750-1000GB a month (yes I have used that much in a month though usually only 400GB)
10 or 100 Mbps burstable
2 amps
3-5 IPs

I am hoping I can find this for >$100. Are my requirements too high for this price point? I may consider other areas of the US if my europe players can get good pings. My current host is located at 56 Marietta in Georgia.

Anything Like Blacklotus On The East Coast

Feb 22, 2007

1. Reliable rackmount services that cater to small customers (a single 1u).

2. IRC permitted.

3. Similar pricing to Blacklotus.

4. Reliable multi homed, well peered network (a Switch and Data reseller maybe?).

5. Reliable power infrastructure (I don't want to replace fried hardware because they screw around with their power system occasionally).

The ideal datacenter would be located along the transit fiber between Philiadelphia, PA and northern VA so I don't have to drive far to deliver the server or upgrade hardware.

Level3 East Coast Providers

Sep 7, 2008

either located in L3 facility or L3 connection.

looking for:

2-4GB memory
2x 160gb drives
3-4TB monthly bandwidth
dual xeon cpus or quad

preferable around $200-$250/mo.

am i asking for too much? everyone seems to only offer 1 or 2TB bandwidth but i'm hovering right around 1.5TB a month at my current location so i need a bit more for growth.

i run a non-profit gaming website and our budget is somewhat tight. we've been in a speakeasy datacenter for over 7 years and the only reason we're moving is because we outgrew the small server we were blessed with for so many years.

East Coast Level3 Resellers

Aug 28, 2008

There doesn't seem to be a list of folks that resell Level3 anywhere, and doing a GIS doesn't really help, either.

I'm looking for a couple of names of some companies that offer dedicated servers in Level3 facilities? Preferably in the Northeast, but anywhere on the East Coast is probably fine, too.

I know Limestone and TMS are L3 resellers, but they aren't east coast...

Softlayer Alternative? East Coast/Dallas Or EU

Oct 1, 2008

Ive recently been getting blips on my private lan with SL and have been unable to get it resolved.

Everything from firewall configs (despite its not being changed in 6 months) to the fibre being dirty and switch flapping has been blamed so being in this position and going in circles for 24 hours means I'm considering alternatives.

The issue would be so bad but the issue is on the 16 core box used for the DB and it uses the iSCSI which means the data is enjoying itself getting corrupted. It wouldnt be so bad if after I'm told its fixed, repair the DB it happens all over again.

So bascially this is what I need elsewhere

1x 4 Core Harpertown 4GB and 500GB in Raid 10
1x 4 Core Clovertown 4GB and 250GB in Raid 5
3x 4 Core Clovertown 4GB and single disk
1x Opteron Dual Core 2GB and single disk
1x 15 Core Tigerton 16GB and 250GB in Raid 10 or iSCSI

Bandwidth around 10TB a month

Id need a private lan and really I would rather a 1GB port on the private side.

To get away from the problems im having I would also rather a dedicated switch as to avoid the kind of issues im having now

West Vs East Coast US Servers For Europeans

Jun 26, 2008

if having servers on the East coast vs the West coast would give significantly better speeds for those people accessing sites from Europe?

We have servers in Texas and someone trying to sell us on a CDN (content delivery network) showed us numbers where it was taking 4-5x longer for someone from Europe to download a file. We want our sites to be faster for Europeans so I was wondering if moving to the East coast would help.

Datacenter Facilities

Feb 25, 2007

1)I have searched the net for power calculators but i haven't found any that did everything i needed. I am trying to figure out what size generator i need. I will obviously be speaking with a electrician, but I am just trying to get a idea. I need to figure out how many amps at 120V a certain size generator will put out. Starting at XKW/480V/3-Phase, how do I convert that down to XAMP/120V/Single-Phase. And what is the typical loss by stepping the power down with transformers and running through a large UPS.

2)I am looking at not putting raised floor in, what are the current methods being used to run AC power overhead. My biggest concern is interference with my Cat5E cables that would also run over head.

Space In Colocation Facilities

Apr 26, 2007

Perhaps some of you who run colocation facilities could help me with the following questions

1) How many of your customers running applications on upwards of 30 servers use regular clunky server towers as opposed to nice 1U servers?

I ask because from a cost standpoint it's important to consider deploying an application on commodity hardware as opposed to expensive blades or other tiny servers. But I'm wondering if for large and growing applications that use upwards of 30 servers in total the savings in hardware purchase would be offset by the colocation facility space required by regular server towers or other large servers?

2) Also, in a rack configuration I know how the servers would be laid out. But with regular server towers, how would these be laid out within the cage? Can they be stacked, or would that not be viable because they're a lot heavier, and each server probably needs room to breathe due to heat generation.

3) What's the industry-standard pricing model for colocation? Is it based on a number of square feet, a number of cages, a number of rack units, or something else? How does this play in to the use of regular server towers?

How Do These Colocation Facilities Compare

Jul 24, 2007

Check out the following two colocation facilities' most basic plans and let me know what you think? Are they offering a reasonable set of services and resources for the price?

I ask because many of you are located in larger American centers as opposed to smaller Canadian ones - you therefore enjoy the benefits of competitive pricing and services, while in most cities in Canada that isn't the case. I just want to make sure that their packages are on par with industry - as I'm new to the industry, your comments are appreciated.

(Keep in mind the prices are in Canadian dollars, which is almost equal to the US dollar.)

Silver Package:
[url]

Colocation 1:
[url]

The first link above only offers 10 GB of monthly traffic. Would you say this is reasonable?

Also, is their definition of "escorted access" the same as the rest of the industry, whereby they unplug the server, put it on a table, and watch while you do whatever you have to? I realize that unescorted access isn't possible if you don't have a significant portion of the rack to yourself, but I'm surprised that you're required to unplug your server, because this leads to guaranteed downtime.

With some packages that offer 10 Mbps, does this mean that buying switches and server NICs that are Gigabit Ethernet or even 100 Mbps are pointless? You could just buy 10 Mbps?

What other comments could you add, in terms of questions I haven't asked in this post? And are there any other things I should ask of these facilities while shopping around?

Qmail :: Received-SPF: Neutral ....

May 12, 2009

I wanted to try HyperVM/LxAdmin setup from sometime now. I finally have one but I am getting trouble with its Qmail MTA. I am posting here hoping to get some help.

Let me tell you the issue.

I have my main vps IP: 10.10.10.22 (I have 3 additional ips).

I have setup 2 domains on their dedicated IPs. (10.10.10.23 & 10.10.10.24). However, whenever I send an email, I get outgoing IP to be 10.10.10.22. I searched on Google and found out that I need to patch qmail with outgoingip.patch to change the outgoing IP.

But how to patch my already installed qmail??? I tried but failed.
I am running Centos 5.3 with HyperVM/Lxadmin

Also, even if I host a domain on main IP, my SPF record is always

Quote:

Received-SPF: neutral (google.com: 10.10.10.22 is neither permitted nor denied by domain domain.com) client-ip=10.10.10.22;

Comcast Carrier

We're having a meeting today with Comcast about letting them move fiber into our facility. Please do not post experiences with Comcast CABLE. I want to know your experience as other datacenters and hosts with Comcast Fiber. What do you know about their fiber and what is your experience with them in both standalone and BGP?

Reliability, latency, peering quality, etc. We are in the Houston area, where so far I have heard they are pretty good with most I have talked to, and a few negatives. At what level would you use their connection?

Carrier Selection

Oct 1, 2009

As we have been extending our private peering relationships across the US and Europe we are also looking to consolidate our carriers to simply Tier 1 and/or near Tier 1 providers. One of these providers will certainly be Level(3), but we are still not fully decided on other carriers.

Now, what I am looking for here is, which network combination would most impress you as a customer/potential customer. I am not looking for price based analysis or analysis of dealing with a company's billing or support departments. I already have the data I need for those determinations. The point of this poll is solely to get end-user input as to overall network performance/reliability and how the network would compliment the existing carrier, Level(3). Please elaborate as to your decision in a post to the thread.

Note: We have already done significant research, this poll is simply to help confirm research we have already done or to bring about items/issues we may have overlooked or not considered. Figured we'd take advantage of the knowledge of this community before making a final decision.

Level3 Reliable Enough As ONLY Carrier

Sep 14, 2009

We are switching from a reseller that blends several carriers to Level3, to reduce our b/w costs (by a factor of 3x). We are driving upwards of 300Mbps currently.

Is Level3 reliable enough in terms of uptime to be our *only* carrier?

We are running a real-time always-on service with long-lived TCP connections, so frequent disconnections would be problematic. A single downtime of a couple of minutes per month would not be too bad on the other hand.

Switching our stuff to Level3 is a lot of work as it is.

Getting a second provider for the failover, which involves setting up a CISCO edge router with BGP, getting an AS number from ARIN, will make this task too big at this point. Is L3 reliable enough on its own to spare this hassle of a second ISP?

East End Hosting Are 455 Clowns

Jul 27, 2008

I bought a reseller off them a wile back and it went fine fr the first week. by the second week he had suspeneded my one of my clients accounts for being an adult site (which the admin new upon me getting the reseller that a few were) ok so after that i had to get rid of all my adult clients 3 20 dollar packages a month lost. Then came all the down time.

Im telling you there servers were ddos'd more times than a hooker smokes crack.

I attemped to complain once and they supended my account for a week. It just got worse and worse from there. one of my sites (personal sites) is freedom-munger) a site similer to myspace or facebook etc. every time id send out a newsletter to my clients they would email me chewing my 455 saying that im spamming from there servers.

a few weaks later fdc unplugs the server my reseller is on because another of there clients has a photo of an underaged girl on there site.

So naturally i asked for a refund after being yanked around on them restoring my reseller on another server.

To say the last they were about as mouthy and unprofessional as a person could be and yanked me around and to allmost 2 years later no refund.

To take it down to there level of speaking (THESE GUYS ARE CHUMPS)

West? East? Or Central?

Apr 3, 2007

I am really not sure if the location is effecting to speed. I am chooing a provider for colo'ing few servers. I know each region has very good providers (in both services and network, from reviews on WHT), but
- from the west coast to central, the latency difference is around 30 - 40ms
- from the central to the east coast, the latency difference is around 30ms

so, if I go with a provider in west coast, it really saves me 60-70ms latency from my area. However, someone likes gnax in east coast using Route Science, that's advertised to help to get the better routes.

I dont see any in west coast using RS or FCP. So, should I go
- with a "normal" provider (I mean network without RS or FCP equipments) in west coast,
- or with a provider with RS/FCP in any place?

Is the location really effecting to performance?
