West Vs East Coast US Servers For Europeans

Jun 26, 2008

if having servers on the East coast vs the West coast would give significantly better speeds for those people accessing sites from Europe?

We have servers in Texas and someone trying to sell us on a CDN (content delivery network) showed us numbers where it was taking 4-5x longer for someone from Europe to download a file. We want our sites to be faster for Europeans so I was wondering if moving to the East coast would help.

VPS On The East Coast

Jun 24, 2008

I have been looking for a VPS on the east coast (near New York). I am looking to spend around $30, but I need 500GB or more of bandwidth. It would be very preferable for the host to allow IRC connections. I have found a couple hosts that fulfill both of these, but at the moment VPS Empire is looking the best. They allow IRC for an extra $2 a month, which is very reasonable.

I would like to see if you guys have any other recommendations or suggestions for me.

East Asia VPS

Mar 16, 2008

I have a small project that I am going to be doing for a client and I am in the need for a small linux (centos) vps, 128mb (would like to have a burstable amount too) ram.

Storage really isnt a issue, dont need more than a couple GB's. Looking to find something around $15 USD. I would prefer the location to be in Japan, but I am pretty much open to anywhere in East Asia.

Web Hosts On East Coast USA

Aug 26, 2008

I've been searching over the last few days for web hosts whose servers are located on the east coast of the USA, but haven't been able to find anything suitable.

I've searched on this forum, but either companies don't tend to post where their servers are locatd or my search criteria isn't working.

Either way, would anyone be able to recommend some east coast web hosts or just list some that you know of?

Best Server For Middle East

Feb 28, 2008

I searched the forums and can't seem to find the answer. I run 3 websites that are targeted to Arabs, mainly most of the user of the site are from Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt.

Where would I find the best server to serve these countries? Servers in Saudi and Dubai are just outrageously expensive.

Also my sites are mainly podcast sites, a portal, with a small forum, and downloadable self produced video and audio content, so any recommendations for servers or hosts?

East Coast Colocation

Jul 18, 2008

After two and a half years I am upgrading my server that hosts my CS server. Unfortunately, my host will not allow me to upgrade it and keep the special I got from them those years ago.

So I am looking for colocation on the east coast (I have players from Belgium and surrounding areas) with the following:

1U Server Colocation
750-1000GB a month (yes I have used that much in a month though usually only 400GB)
10 or 100 Mbps burstable
2 amps
3-5 IPs

I am hoping I can find this for >$100. Are my requirements too high for this price point? I may consider other areas of the US if my europe players can get good pings. My current host is located at 56 Marietta in Georgia.

East End Hosting Are 455 Clowns

Jul 27, 2008

I bought a reseller off them a wile back and it went fine fr the first week. by the second week he had suspeneded my one of my clients accounts for being an adult site (which the admin new upon me getting the reseller that a few were) ok so after that i had to get rid of all my adult clients 3 20 dollar packages a month lost. Then came all the down time.

Im telling you there servers were ddos'd more times than a hooker smokes crack.

I attemped to complain once and they supended my account for a week. It just got worse and worse from there. one of my sites (personal sites) is freedom-munger) a site similer to myspace or facebook etc. every time id send out a newsletter to my clients they would email me chewing my 455 saying that im spamming from there servers.

a few weaks later fdc unplugs the server my reseller is on because another of there clients has a photo of an underaged girl on there site.

So naturally i asked for a refund after being yanked around on them restoring my reseller on another server.

To say the last they were about as mouthy and unprofessional as a person could be and yanked me around and to allmost 2 years later no refund.

To take it down to there level of speaking (THESE GUYS ARE CHUMPS)

Anything Like Blacklotus On The East Coast

Feb 22, 2007

1. Reliable rackmount services that cater to small customers (a single 1u).

2. IRC permitted.

3. Similar pricing to Blacklotus.

4. Reliable multi homed, well peered network (a Switch and Data reseller maybe?).

5. Reliable power infrastructure (I don't want to replace fried hardware because they screw around with their power system occasionally).

The ideal datacenter would be located along the transit fiber between Philiadelphia, PA and northern VA so I don't have to drive far to deliver the server or upgrade hardware.

West? East? Or Central?

Apr 3, 2007

I am really not sure if the location is effecting to speed. I am chooing a provider for colo'ing few servers. I know each region has very good providers (in both services and network, from reviews on WHT), but
- from the west coast to central, the latency difference is around 30 - 40ms
- from the central to the east coast, the latency difference is around 30ms

so, if I go with a provider in west coast, it really saves me 60-70ms latency from my area. However, someone likes gnax in east coast using Route Science, that's advertised to help to get the better routes.

I dont see any in west coast using RS or FCP. So, should I go
- with a "normal" provider (I mean network without RS or FCP equipments) in west coast,
- or with a provider with RS/FCP in any place?

Is the location really effecting to performance?

Level3 East Coast Providers

Sep 7, 2008

either located in L3 facility or L3 connection.

looking for:

2-4GB memory
2x 160gb drives
3-4TB monthly bandwidth
dual xeon cpus or quad

preferable around $200-$250/mo.

am i asking for too much? everyone seems to only offer 1 or 2TB bandwidth but i'm hovering right around 1.5TB a month at my current location so i need a bit more for growth.

i run a non-profit gaming website and our budget is somewhat tight. we've been in a speakeasy datacenter for over 7 years and the only reason we're moving is because we outgrew the small server we were blessed with for so many years.

East Coast Level3 Resellers

Aug 28, 2008

There doesn't seem to be a list of folks that resell Level3 anywhere, and doing a GIS doesn't really help, either.

I'm looking for a couple of names of some companies that offer dedicated servers in Level3 facilities? Preferably in the Northeast, but anywhere on the East Coast is probably fine, too.

I know Limestone and TMS are L3 resellers, but they aren't east coast...

Softlayer Alternative? East Coast/Dallas Or EU

Oct 1, 2008

Ive recently been getting blips on my private lan with SL and have been unable to get it resolved.

Everything from firewall configs (despite its not being changed in 6 months) to the fibre being dirty and switch flapping has been blamed so being in this position and going in circles for 24 hours means I'm considering alternatives.

The issue would be so bad but the issue is on the 16 core box used for the DB and it uses the iSCSI which means the data is enjoying itself getting corrupted. It wouldnt be so bad if after I'm told its fixed, repair the DB it happens all over again.

So bascially this is what I need elsewhere

1x 4 Core Harpertown 4GB and 500GB in Raid 10
1x 4 Core Clovertown 4GB and 250GB in Raid 5
3x 4 Core Clovertown 4GB and single disk
1x Opteron Dual Core 2GB and single disk
1x 15 Core Tigerton 16GB and 250GB in Raid 10 or iSCSI

Bandwidth around 10TB a month

Id need a private lan and really I would rather a 1GB port on the private side.

To get away from the problems im having I would also rather a dedicated switch as to avoid the kind of issues im having now

1-2 Cabinet Colo In San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay, Too)

Nov 20, 2007

I'm currently colocated in 365 Main in San Francisco.

Due to power limitations there I need a new place with 1-2 cabinets, about 25Amps and 1-2mbps committed.

I'm looking for a long-term, reliable, 24x7 NOC, with no surprises. If my servers are down, I'm out of business, so uptime (power+network) is the most important factor.

I will summarize the recommendations I get and post them back here.

East Coast Carrier Neutral Facilities

We're looking at 5 cabinet cages, and we have moderately high power requirements. The Equinix DC4 gives us 32kVA total availability across the 5 cabs.

Can anyone recommend other comparable facilities on the East Coast, or recommend Equinix resellers?

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Load Balancing 2 Web Servers And 2 MySQL Servers

Mar 28, 2008

I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer.

I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat).

Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server.

111.222.111.222 (Main IP)
111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP)
111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP)
If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes.
If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes.

Is it possible to do this?

If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so)

Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers

Oct 11, 2009

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

Name Servers

Aug 6, 2009

I have recently purchased new hosting with a new supplier which uses a different kind of control panel - cpanel. So before I transfer our organisations website across I want to spend some time playing.

We purchased our domains with 123 reg and the host we have been using for a while is namesco our new hosting package is with neither of these suppliers.

Before I transfer our primary domain to the new host I'm doing a dummy run with one of our other domains and that's where i've come up with this name servers question.

The new host gave me the name of their 2 name servers.

But when I went to my control panel at 123 reg to change the name servers they were not using namesco name servers they were using 123's.

Do I want to change the name servers to the new name servers or not? I'm a bit confused as i was expecting to see namesco names servers?
