May 15, 2008

I currently have my own dedicated server located with the following prefs;

Dropping Packets

Is it normal for a ton of packets to be dropped? My server goes so slow after it gets a bunch of connections, even if I kill everything (i have to restart), and I can't figure out what the problem is. on my other servers it says no packets were dropped. how can i fix this?

Cpanel Dropping The Www

Apr 21, 2008

I just wanted to check with you all to see if you have experienced an issue with cpanel that drops the www when you access directories and if so, how did you go about fixing it.

For example - if I were to go to - www.domain.com and then access a sub like /test - it would show up as domain.com/test - dropping the www.

Ddos Attack Still Dropping My Server

Feb 16, 2008

I have been getting ddossed for the last month, my host has tried many things on my server that are commonly suggested around here, however we have over 40 000 connections hitting the server from this attack and it keeps rising.

I am on LiteSpeed.
I also have NetScreen 50 firewall which helped for a little while, however the server still keeps going down.

I am spending $420 a month on my hosting for my dedicated server
Now it is costing me an extra $400 a month to have Netscreen firewall running which is a waste of money as it can not effectively keep the server running and i'm not sure if I can even effectively afford that much money a month, however I might need to spend a little more if need to just get the server running finally.

basically I need some options as to what I can do. I would like to stay with my host, they have been good to me, however if my options are better suited to changing then let me know. I just really need to get my server running great asap and to keep it running great when i'm away from the internet.

Ip_conntrack: Table Full, Dropping Packet

Mar 20, 2008

ip_conntrack: table full, dropping packet

What does that error mean? It's related to iptables right? When I do this cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack_max, I get

65536

I increased it

131072

Because someone recommended me this number because I have 4gb of RAM. But I still get the table full errors or

host kernel: printk: 500 messages suppressed

What should I do? Should I keep increasing the number? How do I know how much I can increase it by?

Nf_conntrack: Table Full, Dropping Packet

Mar 30, 2007

I have 2 identical boxes with FC6 and the same settings and almost the same amount of traffic.

Kernel is 2.6.20-1.2925.fc6 SMP

One is running without problem. The other become slow after few days and from errors I get this message:

nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet

The table do not clean up automatically as reboot solve the problem. How to flush nt_conntrack table without reboot?

The limit is 65536, setting it double seems to solve the problem but I'm not sure it is the way to go.

FIN Packets

Nov 1, 2008

One of my client has the following question but I don't have enough knoweldge on this topic. Hope some network experts out there can give me some advises.

I want to do this:
1. TCP SYN negotiation using fixed port
2. HTTP request
3. ACK
4. Another HTTP request (control words)
5. ACK
6. Another HTTP request (control words)
7. ACK

Unfortunately, I can only accomplish this:
1. TCP SYN negotiation using fixed port
2. HTTP request (control words)
3. ACK
4. FIN
5. TCP SYN negotiation using ANOTHER port
6. HTTP request (control words)
7. ACK
8. FIN

There is too much overhead in the second method. Can you comment on why the first method doesn't work? It processes the first HTTP request but ignore the second, third, etc. HTTP requests. WHY? Do I always have to choose another port to processes another HTTP request?

Forwarding Email Account Dropping Emails Without Bouncing Them

Jun 20, 2009

I own my domain [url] and have a reseller plan on a shared host [url]I have the DNS on godaddy pointed to the nameservers of reyox and on the Cpanel of my domain at reyox I have a forwarding account [url]set to forward to my gmail account.

To the best of my knowledge this has worked flawlessly for years but recently I have been starting to not receive emails from people. I found out when I wasn't getting replies I had been expecting and when I inquired or called the people instead they told me that hey replied... it's been happening over and over again lately.

When I asked my host last week they replied: "We did clear up some mail issues last night, some issues with the queue processing."

However after that it kept happening and now I am at a loss.

I don't know what's wrong nor how to troubleshoot it... It happened with people that are on all sorts of domains (gmail, aol, personal domains etc) and it happens sporadically...
It's really frustrating because I don't know what else I am not getting considering that every other day I find out about an expected email I didn't get.

The werid thing is that none of the senders whose emails got lost reported that they received a bounce issue...

how I can address this in terms of troubleshooting it and finding a solution?

Is there some sort of email monitoring services like there are site uptime monitoring services?

My Ping/packets Lost

Feb 20, 2008

I'm getting slow server response times I've been struggling with this for quite some while.

Here is what I know so far:

1. My website divinelightingdotcom through justping returns average 60-80% packets lost for all locations but Santa Clara, which usually has 0-20% loss.

2. My VPS is in Dallas

3. My ISP is also in Dallas, yet justping their website returns 0 packets lost

4a. When I ping my site from Atlanta, the avg trip is 44 ms

4b. However, the first access of my website through a browser usually takes about 5-10 seconds to respond

4c. I assume that my customers have this same experience (if so, this is killing me on my sponsored search advertising)

5. subsequent navigation through the website is usually acceptably fast.

6. wait an hour or so, and the initial page load has 5-10 second response delay again (can be any page on the site)

7. perhaps related, WinMTR from my location in Atlanta shows an comcast IP in virginia that consistently has 20% loss. I have opened a trouble ticket with Comcast.

Incoming / Outgoing Packets Blocked

Jun 22, 2009

I am facing very unique issue at two of my servers hosted at hivelocity from last 3 or 4 months.

In every couple of days all incoming and outgoing activity get stopped except on port 3386 (RDP) i.e. no one can get website hosted on the server or neither I can access any website from the server but all other services continue to work. A reboot to the server will solve the issue but that is only a temp solution.

I have checked event logs one by one but no issue or error found on it. I have even run the server without firewall but still it stops working.

Scanned the server from 3 different antiviruses one by one but they didn't found any virus.

Datacenter tech staff monitored the server and found no DoS or other such kind of attack on the server or IP.

I am totally clueless on this issue on how to solve it.... anybody here who can help me?

OS: Windows 2003
Firewall: Previous hardware based, then software based and now windows firewall (same issue with all)
Third party softwares: No
Scripts: ASP, ASP.NET, PHP
Database: SQL and MySQL

No other software installed on the server

Linux Firewall - Filtering Out Zero Length Packets

Aug 13, 2008

I run CentOS 5.2 (Sometimes CentOS 4.6). I have been messing around with IPTables, and cannot find out how to filter zero-length packets.

I believe I might need an unclean module. I have already done hours of reading and researching, but I have come up with nothing, for I do not think this is that common.

If anyone could please let me know the commands to use to filter out all zero-length packets, or the unclean module I need to use with IPTables, I would really appreciate it.

The report just says Invalid IN. Does anybody have any suggestions on what would be causing this? I use Mail.app myself and have never had problems with it triggering the firewall.

Empty Box Hosting

Jun 20, 2008

I'm setting up a PHP shop website and the script that I'm going to be using has a pretty heavy list of requirements.

Instead of looking for hosting software packages, I was wondering that are there any hosts that offer an "empty box" where clients can install all the needed software (apache, php, mysql, etc...)?

If not, then what would be the best host for getting a custom PHP build (I'm looking for PHP 5.20).

Empty Reply From Server

May 30, 2008

I'm having some problems with my script, i think its not really a script error...

- Script connects to rapidshare to send a file to the user

- Rapidshare allows unlimited parallel connections, so no problem

- Though some of the time (not alot), i get a connection error.

- Connection error is: Empty reply from server

- Strange thing is, i get this when i do a curl connection to rapidshare

- ping, telnet, fsockopen, all is working, but it seems that i don't get a reply from the server

Well, is this a problem on my side or on the rapidshare servers?

Also, is there a problem to fix this?

Server is using:
- curl 7.15.5
- php 5.21
- apache 2.2.3

there's no firewall setup on my site..., also i can't find anything in iptables,...

CSF Enabled But Iptables Empty

Feb 19, 2008

/etc/init.d/iptables status

Table: mangle

Table: filter

Table: nat

/sbin/iptables -v -I INPUT -s 1.1.1.1 -j DROP
no "response"

.. this means the iptables are simply empty I guess!

CSF is enabled and working, at least it's sending me mails that it's blocking IP's or if CPU load is too high.

/etc/init.d/iptables status is working but not saving anything

My current iptables:

Code:

Munin Graphs Are Empty

Nov 4, 2008

Munin was running OK on my cPanel server until yesterday when the graphs stopped updating themselves. I attempted a "/usr/share/munin/munin-update --force-root" which did nothing. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled munin on the cPanel plugins screen and now its running but all the graphs are empty

Possible To Ban Users With Empty IP Addresses

Jan 6, 2008

Some bot(s) without a reported IP address seems to be making 60 - 500 connections to my server constantly even though there are usually only a few real users connected.

Does some search engines/some legit proxy users have no reported/hidden IP address?

Am I even able to ban an empty IP with iptables?
