I'm rather new to hosting so I still don't get everything, but maybe you can help me. I am hosting a web page on a computer that is hooked into the same network as my personal computer. They are both hooked into an openBSD router, which has the connection to the internet. My recently purchased domain name is set to forward all requests directly to the computer with the website on it (named 'b2.') When you visit the domain from an outside computer it does this just fine, but when you try to access it from one of the computers on my network it does not work. From my computer you can not access the website from the domain, but you can still access it just straight through the local network (i.e. typing 'b2' directly into the address bar ) From the computer which is actually the host to the website, it is accessible neither way, though the local network option was working before. Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it? Keep in mind that I really only understand the basics of web hosting, and terminology and stuff.

I have what seems to be a simple redirect question. I have a dedicated server and a few static IP addresses, but I want to make it so if someone were to type in my IP address in their browser, Apache will redirect them to the domain name. (Typing in [url]
What happens now is that if you were to type in my server's IP address, it will show you the FIRST VirtualHost container that's listed in httpd.conf. This is not so bad since I've placed my main company site at the start of the list, but I'd rather redirect the IP into the domain name I use.
I read somewhere that you can place Mod RewriteRules directly in the VirtualHost container rather than using .htaccess, but the few "rules" that I tried didn't seem to do anything. And yes, I restarted Apache each time I edited httpd.conf.
Is there an easy way to do this?
ALSO, is there a way to redirect the name server address too? If you type in [url]into the browser, it acts the same way. I would ultimately like to redirect both the nameservers and the IP address(es) to the domain name.

Customer asked us to activate Forward for "domain.com "to other Domain for 2 weeks - but as soon as a Subdomain points on a Domain - I can NOT change the Hosting Type anymore ... WHY???

I have a client that asked me to educate myself about web hosting and make a recommendation to him about where he should be. He currently has a shared hosting server at Network Solutions and finds unexplained slow downs and disk corruption reports in his forums DB unacceptable.
I'm glad I found this site-lots of good info but nothing like throwing up some stats and seeing what people recommend. The client told me he wanted to move to a dedicated server but I'm thinking a VPS might do the trick. Especially if upgraded with dedicated Core as well as RAM such as wiredtree is offering.

And finally, i tried to search for the answer to this but the keywords kept bringing up lots of hits without good info. The client sells software so the bandwidth needed is pretty consistent until they release a new version. Then it skyrockets to the point they may have 1500 people trying to download a 50Meg file simultaneously. What is the right way to handle that? Use a CDN or negotiate with the hosting provider to provide burstable bandwidth as needed. As a side note while looking at many offerings I was most surprised that bandwidth seems to sold in large chunks with overage costs hidden.
I think I'm experiencing some type of alternative to a DDoS attack. My server is being killed by thousands of emails being sent to fake accounts on my server.
I'm not a server administrator, so please bear with me.
My load average is skyrocking to 800.xx at times. I look at "top" and see "exim" for one specific user on my server. I own all the websites on my server, by the way.
When I look at my email queue, I see thousands of emails coming in to accounts that don't exist for that specific user. Let's say the domain name is salcollaziano.com. Somebody is sending spam to various salcollaziano.com aliases that don't exist. Like webmaster -at- salcollaziano.com and suzy -at- salcollaziano.com.
How can I prevent these spam emails from having any interaction with my server? It's causing me a lot of downtime on all the sites I have running on that particular server.

I've read that streaming can be made via web server and streaming media server. The first type has only one advantage and this is that it allows to utilize existing infrastructure, while the second type offers more effective network throughput and (what's more important for me as an end-user) allows for better video and audio quality and support of the advanced features.

I want to setup static routes on my servers so that my colo provider won't bill me for traffic among my servers.
I use FreeBSD 6 on my servers. I read the FreeBSD handbook on this and it looks like i should do this:
route add -net 0.0.0/24 0.0.0.3
where 0.0.0/24 is the C class I have from my provider and 0.0.0.3 is the IP address of my server (one of them/any of them).
However, this route appears to already exist as i get this error when running that route command:
route: writing to routing socket: File exists add net 0.0.0: gateway 0.0.0.3: route already in table
Do I need to use a non-routeable ip block (eg 192.168.x.x) for this? Can I use "real"/routeable ips? Does FreeBSD take care of this for me automatically?

Hi I've never worked with a dedicated host, and I was considering going with hostgator, because they provide managed hosting and cPanel, which I'm fond of.
This is not for my own sites, but for someone I work for as a programmer/webmaster. He has asked that I make the decision on this, even though I've basically advised against it, due to my lack of experience with dedicated hosting.

I've been refining an idea I had for an adult website after getting some good feedback from this site, but I had a few specific questions I still need addressed. I will be moving my vBulletin forums to a new dedicated server soon. I have been looking around for a suitable server specs, and I would like to ask you the following questions:
1- If I have the option to maximize one of the following only: the Processor, The Memory, or The Hard Disk. Which one should I go for?
2- Are there any certain settings that I can change in my server environment to get maximum performance for my forums?
3- Do you recommend a certain provider for dedicated servers? Which? And Why?

Littleoak hosting, a small newish hosting company with nearly a rabid following over on the realmacsoftware.com's forums. This is a support forums for rapidweaver which I also use. I cannot install movabletype on this host - tried for 2 days with the help of their support. Finally gave up. If I go with them, I need to convert to wordpress. I do not want to do that just so I can use a new host. They have two packages that could work for me one at 25 dollars a year and another at 80 dollars. Bandwidth and storage are the differences.
Medialayer customer support seems very good, I can run movabletype. Pricing seems a tad high especially given my needs but they offer lots of flexibility and up to 6 domains for one package at 20/mth or 3 domains for 10/mth
ICDSoft top notch support, has a great webmail client (I hate squirrelmail) Little inflexible but nothing that would be a show stopper. I was able to install movabletype, I have yet to fully try it out though. A single domain per account at 6/mth If I have multiple domains it could get pricey.
I'm not sure if it matters but I ping all three sites and medialayer came out on top with 6ms, icdsoft with 13ms and littleoaks with 30ms.
Any thoughts opinions and/or advice regarding these three hosts. I've done enough research and while there may be other fine hosting companies these three are on my short list.
I don't resell, I am using the VPS for personal use to run a small vBulletin board (30-60 members on at a time), a Mambo site that is used to aggregate news (12,000 or so news items), and then a couple small personal static sites, and about 25 email addresses.

Question 1: So, for the type of site I am running, is the stable tree the best? While it is a small vBulletin community, lack of down time is my main goal, so I need to balance getting updates fast enough to keep it secure, but not getting 'bleeding edge' bugs introduced. Which tree is the best balance?
Question 2: Should I be running automatic updats on cPanel/WHM or keep it manual and check here and other forums for important updates?
Question 3: I recently had a problem where Horde stopped working. Zone.net's support staff helped me, and suggested two things to attempt to fix it, and this "/scripts/fullhordereset" fixed it. So, since I am new to VPS's and more specifically, working with Linux, how to I learn/research things like this in the future. Should I be checking out forums/communities for each individual app (like Horde), or is there a better option?
Question 4: Unfortunately, I don't know what I don't know. Such as what tree to run, when to do cPanel updates, when to do Apache updates, how to make sure all my configs are right. Any suggestions on how to both make sure my WHM is configured the best way for my purposes, and more importantly, what is the best way of moving from WHM
When I hit my server's domain it redirects me to one of the hosted sites' domain with a 302 redirect. It used to return the default plesk server page. How can I cancel the redirect?
We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for.
To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page.

i have about 8 different domains i'd like to point to a nameserver (ns1./ns2.mydomain.com) on Win2k3 server, but i can't get them resolved through my nameserver without creating a manual forward lookup entry for each *parked* domain separatly..
Does anyone know how to resolve "parked" domains automatically on Win2k3 DNS??

But do i need to speak to the datacenter to add the reverse dns entries for my domain on their nameservers? What about if i host my nameservers offsite, but then have my webserver/mailserver etc inside the datacenter? Would i need to request the datacenter where the nameservers are hosted to add the reverse ip entries for the domain, and then the request the same from the datacenter for my web/mail servers to add the reverse entries?
I've been having some DNS problems with one of my domains for quite some time now. The domain does not always resolve - some go days without being able to access the site.
I ran a simple BASH script to show what I mean. I replaced my domain with "mysite.net" and the IP with "xx.xx.xxx.xxx".

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I have gone over the DNS records countless times and see no problems. The site is hosted on my own dedicated server.
