Power Consumption For Dell PE 1950 III

you are going to purchase a new rack and the data center offers you a specific amount of power.

you are going to use server's specs like this

Dell PE 1950 III
two processors intel xeon E5410 2.33 GHZ , 24 MB cache, 1333MHz FSB
2x250 sata HDD
8 GB RAM

My question is how many amp's need for one server?

or how much power does one dell PE 1950 III with the previous specs needs?

Dell SC440 With 5iR Raid Card

Jun 20, 2008

We've got a couple of Dell SC440's that we use for low end stuff. We need one with RAID-1 so after talking with our Dell rep we ordered a 5iR card and the corresponding SATA cables. The cables are kind of funky in that the drive end of the cable has both the SATA and power connector in one "thing". You then plug the SATA power into the back of this (it piggy backs on). Once you have done all that the cover won't fit back on as the power connectors stick about 1/2" in beyond the case.

Anyone out there have a SC440 with RAID so we can compare notes?

Dell PowerEdge SC1435 Vs PowerEdge 1950

Aug 16, 2007

There is a big difference in price between these two servers. I suspect the 1950 might be overkill.

My 15 websites are presently on a dedicated Celeron win 2003 server. Would the SC1435 make much difference in speed and tasking?

I presently am using an MS SQL DB hosted on a shared server. Is there any problem in putting the SQL DB on the same server as the sites are on? Is this a good or bad idea? Should the DB go on its own separate disk if on same server?

Failover Clusters? Network Load Balancing?

Jul 28, 2007

I have a server which runs some important apps. I want to provide as much availability as I can..in case the server goes done, another one to take the load.

The server is a Win 2k3 one.

I've looked over the net but I don't know which solution should I go for: a Failover clusters or a Network Load Balancing setup.

Effect Of The Network Card

Dec 10, 2007

I've been reading more and more posts about how a quality network card is important. We build all of our servers from new, quality parts but honestly we always rely on the built in NIC on the motherboard (which are brand name motherboards, but nonetheless)

How can a lesser quality NIC effect a server other than total failure of network activity? What signs should we look for and what are quality brands? My first guess is dropped packets or low throughput. I've also heard of people saying that load can go up from a bad NIC - is there any truth to that?

Adding/configuring Network Card

Feb 19, 2007

Im running Solaris 10 on x86 (but I think the process will be similiar to Linux since they both use ifconfig, but I may be totally wrong).

I have an onboard 10/100 ethernet port that I'm trying to get working (on a home network with w/ router at 192.168.1.1).

When I do ifconfig -a.. all thats shown is lo0 . Where the ethernet cable is plugged in, the little led light is blinking like it should, so I'm pretty sure its just a software configuration thing.

Setting Up The Network

Jan 6, 2008

We're a small company that has outgrown dedicated hosting. We've got 8 servers currently with a well known hosting company, but the servers are starting to get old and we're growing. The cost of moving to colo just seem to make sense to us. We have a bunch of developers, but no network engineers. That being said, we're trying to figure out what we best need to move forward with going colo.

Sometime this month, we'll be purchasing 15-18 servers from Dell. We've already spoken to Colo4Dallas and plan to use their services. So we've got the servers and colo, but have no clue what we need with regard to switches, firewalls and remote-reboot.

1: What type of managed Cisco gigabit switch do we need? We don't know the specific model(s) that would be good for us. We want a hot backup and 24 ports. We manage multiple SSL sites (not sure if this is relevent) and 250+ ip addresses.

1a: Where do we manage ip addresses? We know we'll be getting a block of 250 ip addresses, but how do we assign ip address "a" to server "1"? Can we take that ip address and move it to another server if needed?

2: What type of firewall would be best for us, based on above requirements?

3: DRAC cards are pretty expensive, so we want a IP KVM switch. Any recommendations?

4: Remote reboote -- I've seen power strips out there that do this -- is that what we need, or is there another method we should consider?

5: Is there a company available in Dallas that we could hire to help us with these questions, or in setting everything up once we purchase the equipment?

We're not looking for the cheapest solutions, but the best ones.

Setting Up New Network, Security Concern On DDOS

Apr 16, 2009

I am intending to setup a network as the following:

NOC1:
Cisco/Dlink Managed Router
Firewall with DOSS protection
Server1
Server2
Server3
Backup Data Bank Drive

NOC2:
Cisco/Dlink Managed Router
Firewall with DOSS protection
Server4
Server5
Server6

NOC2 are backup servers. I will need to have whatever in NOC1 to be written to NOC2, i think is call IP mirroring or RAID , not too sure

My [url]is going to have nameserver1/2 to zoneedit. Zoneedit hosts reliable DNS servers. It also support something call failover.

So if NOC1 is down, i will switch to IP to NOC2 IPs.

Now, if i face a DDOS attack, i am suppose to switch to a DDOS attack managment company (with big bandwidth and blocking), is it as simple as switching the [url]to the DDOS attack management company using zoneedit and the company will than link back to my noc1/2 ?

How does it works?

Is the way i setup the network correct?

Any Security Risks With Setting Up Server On Home Network

Jun 28, 2008

Any security risks with setting up server on home network? I would like to set up a computer running linux or xp as a computer on our home network. We have about 3 other computers on the same network.

My network manager says that it would be a security risk to the other computers on the network if I were to have the server running on the network. The server would be connected to a netgear wireless router and I would have ports 80 and 21 opened just for the internal ip address of the server. (for example, the server is on 192.168.0.3, and I had just the two ports open for it, while there were computers on 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4).

The netgear router has a firewall built into it. Each of the other computers on the network have software firewalls. I would not have a firewall on the server, and I really don't care if someone hacks it. So, what at worst could happen? Would the other computers be at risk?

If you are a professional, I want your opinion also.

Getting A Poweredge 1950

Sep 23, 2008

Long story short, my father owns a commercial/industrial distribution company where I work as a broker between contractors and manufacturers.

Our current IT Department (who has no formal computer training) has become more useless to me over the past year and are turning my computer into a counterproductive experience which has about driven me off the deep end.

I am therefore deciding to do the unthinkable and break off of the companies server and start working through one of my own here at home.

Ill basically need the machine to act as a place that recieves and stores emails then distributes out to my machines (laptop, desktop)whatever is connected to it, store and access job files/information, and I would like to be able to hook up to my server at work to access a particular program they use on their server, i guess I could probably just install the program on my server too.

I would also like it for personal use and storage as well as possibly hosting my own website (personal website).

I am looking to get a Dell Poweredge 1950 with some solid specs (spend about 4500) to get me going and will be taking classes at the local CC to educate me on running this thing.

I have a few questions about servers in general.

1. Is it possible for me to connect to the current server at my company to exchange or access files/ programs?

2. Can I do this without compromising the security of the server at work? (security is their #1 argument against everything, they told me once that mozilla on my machine compromised the security of the system - BS)

3. Can I run Apples for my workstation and laptop and still interface with the VMware software?

4. I am currently on FIOS here at home, will I need a new dedicated internet line to run the server? what do I need for speed!??

Thanks guys!

I am still totally new to this whole server scene so I apologize if some of my questions are completely insignificant. I am trying to read around as much as possible but I want to get started on this so i thought i would try and get some direction.

Dell Drives In A RAID Array With Non-Dell Drives

Sep 14, 2009

I have a couple of Dell 1950s and in one of them, I have 2x Seagate 15K.5s that I purchased through Dell and I also have a spare sitting in my rack in case one goes bad, also from Dell.

I was going to be repurposing one of my other 1950s and was going to get two more 15K.5s for it, but wasn't planning on getting them through Dell (rip off?). This way, could still keep the same spare drive around in case a drive went bad in that system as well.

When I was talking to my Dell rep recently when purchasing another system, their hardware tech said you can't use non-Dell drives with Dell drives in the same RAID array because of the different firmware between them.

Anyone know if it is true? Anyone have any experience with using drives from Dell in conjunction with the same model drives from a third party retailer?

DNS Failover

Mar 26, 2009

I want to add a DNS Failover automated service at my server, in order that when it goes down, the DNS Failover enters in action and it will redirect all the traffic to a second backup/failover server (hosted at a different location).

So in order to do this i have been looking around and i have found dnsmadeeasy, and i found their offer interesting.

But i still have some question and doubts on how a dns failover service works. So maybe someone can expalin it to me.

My question and doubts:

1 - If i use for example the DNS failover from dnsmadeeasy, i would have to buy 2 servers where one is the principal server and the other is a backup/failover server, so when my main server goes down, the dnsmadeeasy will detect in a automatic way, and redirect all the traffic to my backp/failover server. After my principal server goes back online, dnsmadeeasy will automatic redirect all the traffic to the principal server.

Im i correct? Or i understound wrong how this works?

2 - I use my own Nameservers and i want to continue to use my own nameservers. So if i use dnsmadeeasy services, i will be able to continue to use my nameservers as ns1/ns2 and then i will add the dnsmadeeasy ns3/ns4...as the following example:
ns1.mynameservers.com
ns2.mynameservers.com
ns3.dnsmadeeasy.com
ns4.dnsmadeeasy.com
ns5.dnsmadeeasy.com
ns6.dnsmadeeasy.com

Correct?

why people usually divide them into web and database server? is it for security or performance reason?

- 1 server(web and database) and 1 server for failover

Failover

Aug 4, 2007

In making my plans for my web hosting business I plan to start, I've thought about a failover but wanted to know the best way to set it up.

I would ideally like to start with something like getting a small shared hosting solution (not reseller, just shared) at a reliable hosting company. On this hosting plan, I will host a simple 1 page site that says my company is having technical difficulties, reminds people that data is safe, and provides any contact information accessable (like e-mail/phone/etc...).

I already have DNS setup offsite.

I would like that if my server(s) go down for any reason, whatsoever, that DNS automatically starts serving the temp site.

so if my server suddenly goes down, [url]or [url]suddenly goes to the offsite shared hosting plan.

This would not provide customer site redundancy. This would only ensure that if anything happens to my service, customers have a page available that explains what is happening and has information to contact us to get more details.

PIX Failover, Serial Or LAN?

Jul 11, 2008

We have 2 Cisco PIX 515's in a failover configuration (7.1 series IOS). We have available both a serial failover cable and adequate switch capacity to allow using either the serial or LAN-based approach. We have no current plans to locate the firewalls physically apart.

We have plenty of info on how to configure either, but no recommendation on which is the better choice.

Web Hosting Failover

Feb 21, 2009

I have a reseller account with a company that often has spontaneous DNS errors, and this, as you know looses us money. I also have a dedicated server running a panel exclusively via IIS. Is there a way I can set up my dedicated (Windows) box and my reseller account in a mirror way, so if one of them fails, the other will take over.

There are no file changes often, more database then anything. Is this possible?
Main necessities are:

-Mail Servers

-MySQL Servers

-PHP5

-Cron jobs

(Or, if a shared hosting company can accommodate this somehow and is relatively inexpensive.

DNS Failover/Redundancy

May 1, 2008

Basically have 2 hosting accounts at different providers...each set-up for the same domain name...and then somehow wtih DNS make it so if host #1 goes down traffic goes to host #2 (which would basically be a splash screen explaining that host #1 is down and will be back soon).

DNS isn't my strong point, but I do know you can do this with MX records...so if the first server fails it tries the next until it gets a working one or reaches the end of the list. I'd just like to do it is A records.

It wouldn't be as simple as setting the nameservers like this would it?

ns1.host1.com
ns2.host1.com
ns1.host2.com
ns2.host2.com

Would it use the host1 nameservers as long as they're online, and if not failover to the host2 nameservers? If so, great, but what if the host1 nameservers are online but the server itself is not.

DNS Failover Service

Dec 10, 2007

Assume, a DNS failover service would change the DNS from server 1 to server 2 when the first one is offline. This will be changed quite fast, however isn't it true that some visitors still experience a downtime of a couple of hours (saying that the main server will be offline for 6 hours) as their ISP might not update DNS that frequently?

So basically, what is the added value of a failover service?

Secondary DNS Failover

Jul 22, 2008

What happens if your primary nameserver goes down? Meaning that it goes completely off the net, not even denying dns requests but completely ignoring them.

I'd guess that resolvers would query the secondary NS after a specified timeout, but what is that timeout set to? Does it differ from ISP to ISP? How much of a slowdown are we looking at for end users?
