Switch And Data IPO...
Feb 9, 2007Switch And Data, a provider of network neutral data centers and colocation services, just had an IPO yesterday. They filed to sell about 1/3 of their shares priced at the high end ($17). I was wondering if anyone here had personal experience with the company, and could offer some insight on how they stack up versus Equinix and other competitors.

Equinix trading symbol: EQIX
Equinix has been up a lot this year and has a huge market cap of 2.3Bil ($80/share), with revenues of 269Mil, gross profit 63.7Mil, net income -49Mil.
I calculated Switch And Data has around 35.9 million total shares, which puts its current market cap at around 720Mil ($20/share). I couldn't find any 2006 numbers, but in 2005 they had 105Mil revenues and -11.3Mil net income.
How comparable are these two companies? Does SDXC deserve to trade at a comparable level to EQIX? What do the experts at WHT think?
Switch And Data Venting
Aug 12, 2009Recently, we expanded our space with Switch and Data. They didn't have any cabinets physically next to our current ones, so they offered us cross-connects with an NRC only (no MRC) between our own existing space and the new. (Of course I didn't get this on the same 1-year contract as everything else.) After a few months, I noticed they've been billing us for them, so I contact our rep. Apparently she "wasn't authorized" to do that, so after some heated emails they're removing the charges to date and charging us the MRCs moving forward. It's over $7K a year for the two.
They also upped their minimum labor charge, so it now cost $175 to have them sign for a FedEx or have any other minimal amount of work done. We have an on-site employee who manages our equipment, but obviously he won't sit there waiting for UPS/FedEx a few times a month. Two instances last month there were employees on site and it cost an hour of labor for them to physically walk two packages onto the data center floor from the front office.
While installing another cross-connect recently, they knocked our patch panel just enough to disconnect a fiber. They charged us for the two hours it took to debug and rectify the issue. The on-site techs assertion was that it must have been "loose" to begin with - of course it worked fine for 6 months prior. You would think a sales person would side with you in a case like this, but they wouldn't budge.
They must be really keen on driving away customers. What really sucks is the connectivity available at their facilities is so amazing. I would brush it off as the cost of doing business if they were up front on all these things, but they aren't.
Data Center Switch
Aug 6, 2009Would a consumer Gigabit switch work in the DC for sharing a connection with like 2-3 servers?
Obviously, I am not looking for features like bandwidth control and other pluses from enterprise switches....

May 20, 2008We are in need of some space in the Switch and Data facility located at 60 Hudson, NYC. This is not negotiable, it absolutely has to be at 60 Hudson in Switch and Data.
We don't need a full cabinet, a 1/4 cab would suffice (or even really 2U - 4U).
Can anyone recommend a company that has space in that facility that is willing to sell this small of an amount?
Comparing Switch & Data To Internap

Colo In Switch And Data Or Telehouse NYC
Mar 22, 2007Here's my plan: colo servers for VoIP in either Switch and Data NYC or Telehouse NYC (or possibly Equinix Newark NJ). Purchase bandwidth from InvisibleHand.net, who can give me a direct connection of IP bandwidth from DTAG DeutscheTelecom
People say DTAG has awesome bandwidth, and I know I can get it pretty cheap from InvisibleHand.
Any comments on this plan? Which of the 3 locations is best for the price? I don't want to buy from a reseller (since they may go under). I want my colo direct from whoever owns it like Switch and Data.
SNMP Monitoring Software For Switch Ports In Your Data Center
Jan 8, 2008We currently have a OK solution to monitor and graph our client bandwidth at the switch port. It's a great product, but we have been expanding quickly and we are looking for a solution that is a bit more scalable and user friendly. Any recommendations?
Basically we want software to do the following:Monitor/log bandwidth in/out
Graph data in some way shape or form
Provide a web interface for users to login and view bandwidth usage
Scalable and cost effective
Easy to use
Windows or Linux

Nov 9, 2009I am looking for small colocation space in Equinix NY2.
(There is another topic here [url]where the original poster was looking for dedi/colo in Equinix NY4; I joined that topic with the same request. But after doing my homework, I've adjusted the requirements: firstly, I need colo only, not a dedicated server; and secondly, NY2 is almost as good for my purposes as NY4. And apparently there are more providers offering colo there.)

Apr 25, 2008Equinix Secaucus NY2 (275 Hartz) seems to have cooling prolem for the last 1 hour. The whole DC becomes hot. I went out one hour ago, came back and it's so hot now. I don't have temp now, ut I think it's around 85F (up from around 65F typical).
If you are in the DC, have fun working ... I wonder how much longer I can work here Hope they fix this soon, or else......
Equinix Ashburn Availability
Jan 11, 2007Is anyone aware of the current availability of colocation space at Equinix in Ashburn, VA? We are currently trying to obtain some space with them but getting my dedicated sales contact to respond is like pulling teeth! Are they so full (and thus full of themselves) that we will have to operate on THEIR terms (if at all)? At this point we are soliciting quotes from other datacenters of known lesser quality just so we can get this deployment live...

SwitchandData Vs. Equinix In Northern VA
Mar 15, 2007colocating servers in the N VA market. I've read numerous recommendations on this forum for the Ashburn Equinix facility. Since it's filling up quickly I've also been looking at the SwitchandData facility in Reston. It appears to have more available space and lower prices. Does anyone have any experience with S&D and what tradeoffs should I be concerned about in looking at an S&D facility instead of an Equinix (in general or specifically those two centers)?

Dec 21, 2007I visited the colo space (1 cabinet) we obtained through an Equinix reseller. There was some confusion as initially we were going into DC2, but they put us into DC3 as that's where they had the space (they have a lot of cages in both DCs).
In the past, I had visited DC2 and it's clear the facility was purpose-built for Equinix. You can tell just by looking at it from the outside, but also inside.
Driving up to DC3 (on Chillum Place), I was first surprised to notice glass windows on the outside of the building (they have the reinforced walls inside of that I was told).
Apparently, the building was some other company's datacenter or offices, which Equinix then refitted their standard-build datacenter inside the building. They also have different man-traps (like a rotating door) compared to DC2, raised flooring (which is not used I was told), and lower ceilings.
I drove around the DC3 building, and the other half of it appears to be some other company's datacenter (based on the generators on the roof). Any idea who that is?
Is DC3 the same quality as DC2? It didn't quite "feel" like the quailty of DC2, but that's just an impression and not based on any empirical evidence. It's also a bit further out there, while DC2 and its new "siblings" (DC4/5) are all adjacent to each other (on Filigree Court).
With the reseller we are using, most of their bandwidth in DC3 cross-connects to their network equipment in DC2, and that's where they peer. That's another thing that makes me feel like DC3 is quite secondary.
Are my feelings unfounded, or should I push our reseller to find a cabinet for us in DC2?

Nov 29, 2007We just signed today to move our colo to Equinix Ashburn. I'll send out an email to our customers next week, to explain the upcoming downtime for the move. We do SaaS for our own specialized software product, and all our customers are in universities.. usually professors or administrative assistants.
These people are not technical, so saying something like "really good peering" means nothing to them. However, saying "the facility is so good that Google has servers there" is something they would understand. So, who are the tenants there that an average person would know? I realize there are multiple buildings all next to each other, but I don't think it will be necessary to denote by building. Last time I toured the facility (a while ago), I saw Google and Amazon there.
