I just want to make a little information site with about 5 pages, nothing fancy, there will just be a very small amount of traffic. What is the cheapest reliable web hosting company or package out there? I am in the U.S. if that matters.

I've been using Siteground.com for a few months and they suspended my site because I was using proxy scripts. I had to remove the scripts to get my site back, but now a main function of my site is missing.
My site does not take up that much space (only 100MB), but it gets accessed frequently and especially with the proxy script it can sometimes be a burden on the server.
I need a lenient web host that allows proxy scripts and other things like CRON jobs, PHP, MySQL (with PHPMyAdmin, preferably, and multiple DBs) and email capabilities (400/hr is okay). I'm used to Linux with CPanel, so staying with the stuff I know would be best.
I need to find a reliable host that can meet these needs.
I am currently facing a move from my existing web host, as they are altogether incompetent. Four of the last five days, my site has either been down, showing a suspended page, or redirecting to the main page of the host. (I am a legitimate business - not selling penis enlargement supplements)
So now, I need a good host, who will provide maximum value for dollar spent. My requirements are fairly simple. I need 5 SQL databases, the ability to install and configure a CMS of my choosing, and a site that is based in the US. (I need my site to be US based and listed, for very specific reasons)
I have used Rochen in the past, and am very happy with them. However, I want my sites on a different host, as several of my other sites are cross linked.
Finding services in such a competitive field is overwhelming. It's getting too hard to cut through the BS.

View 14 Replies View RelatedOne of my contacts is looking for a domain/hosting server that's cheap (under $15/month total), and reliable (the usual 99.9% uptime). My contact has used Yahoo (paid) before, but wasn't really satisfied by it.
I doubt that the total disc space will go over 1 gig, and PHP/MySQL is preferred, just in case.
I am a working on a website which will be more diverse but will work in the same way SWOOPO and many other auctions websites work with bids being placed etc.
I do not want to run the site on a hired dedicated server, I have a budget of around £5000 (around USD $8000) to buy a server. I was thinking of buying something from ebay, I am as of yet undecided exactly what to buy but I am leaning towards an affordable DELL 1855 blade chassis with the full 10x blades that is available. I have already made enquiries with datacentres in London about colocation costs, just waiting for an official quote.

This can give 72ghz of processing power with 40GB RAM and that is awesome. Does anyone know an approximate figure of how many customers/queries the server can handle at % rates? I know this depends on the size of the database and so on but I am just looking for estimates please.
I know I will need at least two cheap servers for a SWOOPO clone, one to run the website and the other for the SQL so rather than do that and get two servers I thought this route was better when weighing up the 7u size along with 72ghz processing power.
I am not looking for advice and tips on hiring a dedicated server but I really would appreciate some advice on what server to buy because the script is nearly 95% complete and we should be launching within 6-7 weeks after heavily testing it.
I've just passed the 6 month mark with Hawkhost this week. I signed up with a coupon that was floating around that made the deal hard to pass up.
I have a small business shopping cart based site that receives an average of 70 visitors/day which uses 40MB bandwidth/day or roughly 1GB/month. I'm on the standard package which currently gives me 3GB/month storage and 30GB/month bandwidth. It's not a large site by any means, but I need it to be up 24/7. I also have 4 domain add-ons, but they get very little traffic. FYI, I have my domains registered with godaddy.
The first week I opened a ticket requesting that ssh be enabled. My ticket was updated with a "we're on it" response after one minute, which appeared to be from an actual human, followed by a resolution 2 minutes after the ticket was opened.
Later the same day I submitted another ticket regarding setting up email in a particular email client - that was responded to and resolved in 5 minutes.
A month later I had an email bounce issue that I needed some help investigating. Two hours later it was responded to and resolved.
Since then I haven't had to contact support. I have a monitoring alert system to notify me of any downtime. It's alerted me one time in six months and by the time I sat down at the computer to check, my site was back up. With my previous host, it happened on what seemed like a bi-weekly basis.
I just referred somebody to sign up with hawkhost today - something I'd be worried about in the past with other hosts.
I have no complaints to speak of and it's tough to beat the price/reliability ratio. Keep up the good work!
Very new....need a webhost for my 2 small businesses:
business 1: consulting. need to put up examples of my work that are photo heavy & graphic heavy. would like to use a diy template like rvsitebuilder or something similar business 2: ecommerce...something easy to use as i am not tech savy
i've researched and inmotion has a lot of good reviews, but sitebuilder does not seem that customizable. Also found Arvixe, but not true 24/7 support....
Also, being able to send large files through email is important.
I have had an account with a small UK hosting site. Now about two days ago I submitted a ticket to them here we are and no reply yet, I even emailed the admin, yet to no reply.

Which of them would be most suitable for me. I am about to start a small online business: two websites and a couple of blogs.
I am after proven reliability, 24/7 support, no down time and many resources (which most do anyway).
I would like to find a host that could handle 2 or 3 domains but without bells and whistles... everything with shared hosting is $25 a month and up! All 3 sites are under 1mb (not likely to go over 3 mb), written in good old HTML; I would prefer a File Manager but FTP is OK too. Must be US based and have a reasonable uptime guarantee.

The closest I can show in what I am building with my partner is HERE (which claims to have had 90Million pageviews/month last year) Just basically a teen game and graphic site. It will be mostly flash games, php, various other scripts and forums.
I'm confident in saying they don't use shared hosting at least. Though what it is exactly I don't know. There is no way I'd get a dedicated server to begin with till we need it. I'm not sure what else a site like this requires (perhaps unlimited mySQL?) for a shared hosting plan. I was looking at HostMonster, Hostgator and Bluehost. I need good customer support for sure, I've had too many crap hosts in the past. I also need multiple domains (4-5)
In sum, does the shared hosting even matter at this point, or should I come back when we're in need of dedicated? I'm guessing cp usage will be the first to give out?

I recently moved a site from one hosting company to another. I went to the registrar and pointed the DNS at the new nameservers, and set up a new ftp account to upload the site. The DNS seemed to resolve ok after a few hours, (in my browser I was seeing the new host's default home page) so I uploaded the site to the new host.
Today sometimes I see the new site and sometimes the old!
I'll be editing pages and uploading them by ftp, then suddenly I'll see a different directory structure on the remote server. Similarly I'll refresh my browser while looking at the new site and... Hey! I'm seeing the page on the old site!
I've cleared the browser cache on my machine btw.
My guess is that either a server somewhere in the path (at my local service provider?) is throwing out old cached versions of the page, perhaps when it is busy, or that not all the nameserver/dns records have updated.
Can't access my web site, my web host says it's my ISP.
My WebHost said "It seems that your ISP cannot resolve the domain".
Can an ISP have any control over the accessibility of individual domains?
That's sounds a little strange to me.
My ISP support is currently closed, but I suspect they'll tell me to contact my web host.
I was able to access it earlier today.

I'm a university designer trying to find hosting for a video textbook. I have about 330MB of videos framed in a single swf/html/js page.
Our course is about 300 students, and we'd expect the site to be largely dormant except for traffic spikes right before exams, when everyone will want to access the material.
We know nothing about linux images or server maintenance or anything required to use an unmanaged VPS. I'm mostly just concerned about having enough bandwidth not to upset ToS, but I'm unsure of what this actually translates to. Any hosting advice would be extremely appreciated, from specs we should look for to specific hosts. We're lost fishies!
I have plans os doing a NSFW site very soon and am trying to gather as much information about all aspects of what it takes before getting this project off the ground. I know a fair bit of what it will take and I have a web designer set up, ect but I need help picking a web host. I woke up this morning to find I wasn't able to access my domain based email or my website. So I figured I would check with my host, (www.hostpc.com), and I was unable to access them, also.
I had someone else from a remote location and PC check and they can access hostpc as well as my website.
My PC is up and running fine otherwise.
I want to buy a domain from Godaddy.com and host on a free webhost, that works really great. But I don't wanna get this problem when you visit the forum ->>> mydomain.com, I want it like this ->>> mydomain.com/forum/ and forum/index.php and all that stuff, so you can visit a thread directly.
But in my experiences before, I just got the mydomain.com, even if I visited the forum or an another page. Should I put the DNS or what to get the godaddy domain to work fine with the free webhost?

I then carried out a HOME FOLDER backup of my old host through CPANEL and (I think this is where I went wrong) reinstalled that backup on my new host. Now I can't access the home page on the new host, even when I use the temporary IP.
