Budget Dedicated; A Good Company
Sep 14, 2008
I'm with burstnet and they're pretty good, however I do have some downtime and that's really my main issue. I need my sites to be online 24/7, or as close to that as possible.
I have a budget of around $80 per month, which isn't much, but I don't need any top of the range server, I'd love to go with singlehop, they look amazing, but their pricing is out of my range.
Can anybody recommend any good companies, with good uptime and a reasonable support team? It would be brilliant if they had some sort of remote reboot facility, as waiting for the company support team to reboot can be a pain...
I don't need much, the server is just to host my person websites, project ideas etc. I need around 1TB bandwidth, 100GB diskspace maybe... I could probably manage on shared hosting right now, however I need the freedom of my own dedicated. I've had a bad experience with VPSs before, so they're out of the question.
I've searched, but burst seems to be my only option, which is disappointing.
Requirements:
<$80 P/M
~100GB Disk space
~1TB bandwidth
~10 IPs.
No control panel, I can manage that myself

I'm looking for a dedicated hosting server to store more than 800GB in video. This video will not be played back, this place is just to store and where people can download.
As far as I can tell my only solutions is dedicated, but if anyone can offer me a better solution please let me know. Before I had this videos on different servers but the company does not allow me to keep them for storage.
I need to know the top 3 hosting companies in the US, and why you like them.
I like aplus.net but after doing some research I found out that this company is a nightmare.
Please, I need help really fast! Thank you all in advanced for your suggestions.

We're building out a small setup for a client, and we're wondering what's a recommended L3 switch on a budget?
Basically, we're going to be colocating in a rack with about 12 servers & a 100 mbps drop, and won't really be doing any major bandwidth (less than 10 mbps).
The datacenter was saying something about a /30 handoff for the C class of IPs they're going to be allocating to us. They also said they will NOT handle any Vlans for us, and will just basically handoff the IPs and we will need to route to them and do our own vlans.
One thing we need to be able to do is route additional IPs to servers if a client orders them. We were recommended a 3550-24-EMI by a friend, it seems old but if it does the trick, it works. One thing I was reading about it though was PVlans and the 3550 not supporting them. I don't think we'd need PVlans in our setup, just basic 1 vlan per client.

Things have become a little hectic.
I decided to go for a budget dedicated server because the shared hosting I was using was grinding to a halt several times a week.
I haven't used a dedicated server before, and wasn't 100% sure what I needed, so after lot's of going round in circles, I found the 123-reg £49.99 server and unlimited bandwidth, so I ordered it....and waited, and waited. Not so much as an order confirmation, or reply to my emails asking what was going on. Not a great start, so I cancelled the order.
OK, I have a budget of around £60 a month.
I need the server to be able to do mod_rewrites.
Unlimited, or a generous amount of bandwidth per month is important.
Good service if it all goes wrong is essential.
Preferably UK based, but will consider other countries if contacting them isn't a problem.
I need some kind of control panel as well.
i will be running a Vbulletin + VBSEO (hence the mod_rewrites) installation and a joomnla installation with lots of large images if that makes any difference.

I run a site that has a medium sized forum (23,000 members; 350,000 posts), about 1000 pages of content (but not heavily viewed), and some relatively un-resource-intensive features. We have one feature that is a bit stressful on the database side of things, but nothing too extraordinary.
I'm looking to migrate from our current dedicated server at LunarPages to another alternative. LP has been great to us, and I would recommend them to anyone, I just feel like we can get a similar server for slightly less somewhere else.
We are paying $165/mo for these specs:
- Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz
- 2 GB RAM
- 160 GB Storage
- 1500 GB Bandwidth
- cPanel
I would like to shoot for something more like this:
- Something better than a P4... open for suggestions, but I'm pretty greedy in terms of processors, I'd like something pretty nice.
- 1 GB RAM should be fine
- 100 GB Storage or more
- 1000 GB Bandwidth or more
- cPanel
- Less than $150 total
So not too many major changes I suppose... and maybe I'm being too greedy. I've found some offers I like the looks of, but I need some suggestions. Companies with good customer support are always preferable as well, of course.

We use dedicated servers at several data centers.
We have used a particular host since 1999 (we were shared/resellers then) and have used dedicated with them since 2001.
For a particular set of development servers, moderate traffic e-commerce sites and testing we use them.
One particular server has been our workhorse and it basically had a ridiculously low grandfathered in price.
Unfortunately they moved us. That's not a problem. The problem is they moved our dedicated machine with 3 drives to a vps.
So instead of our own machine, we share a machine, and instead of 3 drives, we have 3 partitions on one drive.
(the drives were 1 for OS, 1 for websites, and 1 for backups)
This is a windows 2k3 machine
The did this without notice or warning.
We saw it, then they mentioned it in a support ticket, and now refuse to discuss it (no response to questions)
So, unfortunately we hate to move.
We use 3 provider, none of them have we been with less than 3 years. We are super loyal if you treat us right.
WE dedicate and not co-lo. Co-lo def would save us money, but we just prefer a dedicated environment.
What we are lookng for is an entry level server to begin a relationship with a new host
for this machine
need two small drives (35 GB or more)
half gig or more of memory
p4 or more processor
100mbps port preferred
win 2k3
if you want to throw in a control panel great
(sounds crappy doesnt it? but thats what we used for many years)
multiple IPs
of course, feel free to make it better
looking to pay less than $199/mo - no setup
less than 150 would be stupendous.
willing to sign a contract.
AM I asking too much? considering u could probably do the above with spare parts? I don't know
Prefer North American based machines.
We really don't have that much of a simultaneous strain on these, they are work horses really.

After several issues with our shared hosting provider, I have decided to recommend we move our site to a VPS solution.
We are a video/media production house and although our actual site does not demand many cpu/memory resources, we have a huge need for ample disk space and FAST data transfers up and down.
We are constantly uploading video files for client approval, receiving files from animators/designers/etc., delivering files to clients, etc. and need FAST and RELIABLE hosting to accomplish this.
I may end up using a content management system for the site itself, probably Drupal, but our actual web content is minimal. Most of our traffic takes place behind the scenes as data transfer.
I simply don't have the bandwith onsite to run my own server, so I would like to try the VPS route. I don't think we have money to budget for a dedicated server.
One last question. Do any VPS solutions offer a media streaming server for Flash streaming?

I have a 1u server that I'm looking to colo. I looked around the forums but I can't seem to find exactly what I need.
I'd prefer if the hosting company was large, owned its own datacenter (as opposed to leasing), offered proactive (automated) monitoring services, remote reboot, and a superb network with little or no downtime.
I like liquidweb but it looks like they only have 500gb / month up and down or a dedicated line capped at 10mbps line. I need something in between, around 1000GB / month up and down with 100mbps port. Support doesn't really matter, nor does price.

My boss has recently asked me to source a new host for our servers. At the moment we're running 8 Windows boxes but are unhappy with the service we're receiving from our hosting company. We are looking for a managed hosting company, that has offices in the UK and US to look after the servers.
At the moment we haven't nailed down our exact requirements so I'm just really looking for any recommendations you guys might have. I've done a wee bit of Googling and have found a company called Rackspace but I'm ideally looking to contact around 5 companies to see who can offer us the best deal.

I’m not sure this I the right place to post this, but since I’ll need also a dedicated server I guess it is (I’m sorry if it’s not).
Hi to you all.
I’m developing my own site. This will be my very first time building and managing a site, so I’m for sure a noob on this type of stuff (but I have a good general knowledge on computers (I build my own computers and solve every problem I encounter)).
The site will be managed by joomla 1.5 plus a phpbb3 forum (maybe vbulleting in the future). Obviously when my site is completed and published on the net I’ll have zero members, but I hope to see this number increase (lol…from 0 members it isn’t a hard thing to accomplish…I guess ).
Having a really low number of members and visitors I think that I’ll start from a shared hosting plan (or VPS) and then go up to a dedicated server (when I’ll need it…I hope soon )….probably a managed dedicated server since I don’t know much of the technicalities needed to manage a dedicated server.
This being said, I would prefer to go for a good hosting company (cheap…but reliable) that has both shared and dedicated hosting plans so when I’ll have to upgrade (from shared/VPS to dedicated) everything will be smoothly managed by them.
The site/forum aims to have a large community, a good n° of hosted files (images and mp3’s (recorded voice) ---> everything legal!)
What hosting company would you suggest?
Is it possible to have the site on one server and the forum on another? (considering that the forum will be integrated in the joomls CMS with a bridge).

I am interested as I am sure others are as well in the results. Please also list things you want to see providers that they are missing the boat on now. Please dont mention specific providers and make this a bash session. I think this type of dialoge will benefit all the providers out there.
This was supposed to have a poll but my laptop died before I could post the poll questions
What is most important to you in a dedicated hosting company?
#1 Price
#2 Support
#3 Network
#4 Client User interface

actually I have my dedicated server with ThePlanet since many years ago, where I'm really happy, but due to recent spanish laws, I need to move everything to a european dedicated server as ThePlanet isn't certificated at the "Safe Harbor directive".
============
This is what I actually have:
2x1024 MB DDR 266 ECC
1 Dell 1600SC Dual Xeon MB DAT54AMB8C2
2 Intel P4 Xeon 2.8 GHz 533FSB (4x2.8)
2500Gb Bandwidth
Linux+Cpanel
============
What I'm looking for, is a serius company (no reseller company) with similar dedicated servers configurations. What I'm looking for is also a 1Gbps uplink connection. Bandwith is not so important, as my monthly bandwidth is only about 300Gb.
I've seen very fast (connection) servers in Netherland but don't know how serious they are.
OVH (apparently) looks also fine, but I've read very bad reviews about them.

I am wondering what grace period after the due date your dedicated server provider offers you before suspending your server.
Please let me know how many days before the due date your provider sends out your invoices , and after late how many days before they suspend your dedicated server. We are looking to amend our policy on the matter and would like to hear what others in the industry are doing.

We have 2 servers which run our website. One for data (about 50gb) and one for databases (about 5gb)
We currently perform offsite backups but we want to improve upon these. Our main objectives are:
1) Be able to recover as much info as possible in the event of a disaster
2) Be able to rollback to a previous version should we not notice a problem until later (ie 30 day history?)
3) Be able to restore as quickly as possible
4) Be able to afford it!
The options we seem to have are:
A) Use a service such as backupdirect.net which specialise in offsite backup and have specialised software to handle this. Obviously we get support, the backups are encrypted, etc and probably will end up with a much more robust backup solution.
However, it will take time to restore, if our server goes down we still have to get that working then perform the restore
B) Buy another dedicated server, which we can run everything on (albeit slowly!) and keep a 'live backup' on this server. This means we could switch to it should our main servers die for any reason with minimal downtime. Downsites would mean we have less support, would have to be careful with encryption of the data flowing from one server to another and we would have a less formal backup solution (eg harder to restore back to a point in time)

As you can see I have questions. Until I saw and read some posts on this forum I thought I had some answers...
I was looking into a VPS with 1and1.com
Seemed to have good stats, and is a fairly large company. The plans were nice, was going to start off on their VPS 2 package with 20GB/2000GB, 245MB ram burstable to 512MB. All was well, since their packages seemed to offer the most for the least, if you know what I mean. I also liked the ability to upgrade the package without interrupting my service.
I read some posts here, and looked into a VPS even more, and now Im not so sure about 1and1.com or the thought of even having a VPS.
I have no experience with a VPS. So running it would be all new. Im not computer illiterate and I have taken many network and network operating classes. So I have some experience with command line linux. I have messed with some IIS, and a LAMP. On the other side, it scares me that I could f**k something up and bring down the site.
Now, for my needs. The site when launched has a predicted demand of a few thousand users over the course of a month. This is a business site, so downtime, and a shared environment don't seem to make sense. The site is very mysql intensive, at least by my standards. Most pages have 3-6 queries, main pages can have 10+, and most user actions include a few queries. The most load I could fathom would be all 1,000-4,000 users hitting the site hard for 3-4 days. This is now, next 'season' could be twice that load. In between seasons seasons we were going back to shared until the site starts making more money, and we fill in the off season with some other money making service.
The reason why I thought VPS was budget, and just we wouldnt want to be on a shared hosting plan, and somehow our demand was larger than expected and they shut down the site. So do yall think that a VPS is the right way to go? We have the budget to go VPS($40-$80) a month for 3 months, before going back to shared.
About 1and1.com: I read a few threads, some recent, that seem to say they oversell even a VPS. This doesnt make much sense since its supposed to gaurente those resources to me. The company is so big, but even these few posts and accusations are keeping me from commiting. My main concern is that between when we launch it and when our first spike of demand hits is only 2 months, so I dont want to learn that 1and1.com sucks firsthand.
Ive seen other hosts that this forum sponsers, so I assume there is *some* prefernce to use them, but like jaguarpc.com VPS plans seem to be a little more $ for a little less (storage and bandwidth) when comparing to other deals.
