Server Management Company Or Me

Aug 12, 2007

I initially posted a topic to get help with a problem because I want to fix it myself without wasting the time of the server management company. They however picked up the post and said I should opened a ticket with them.

The problem is however still not resolved to my satifaction after a few days because we differ on some points so can you please air your view on this matter?

-----------------

[url]or [url]

Problem 1) Certificate error that hostname and certificate name don't match.

Problem 2) At some places in WHM or cPanel there is a secure and non secure warning items.

The problem 2 is perhaps to bug in WHM V11 so it is not so important.

However, the server mangement staff insist that problem 1 is because the login is via IP (or other domain name) and not via hostname but I don't agree with them because.

a) During the years I always logged into whm or cpanel via ip or domain names and never got such error.

b) cPanel redirect any whm or cpanel access to the ssl ports under HOSTNAME so it MUST match the certificate even if you use 75.127.69.82:2087

I don't get any error if log in with [url]so it is clear that the redirection to ssl ports under HOSTNAME like above don't work correctly.

That the redirection works can be seen by using [url]because the same error comes up (for mercury.domain.com) despite the site have his own certificate.

What we have here is.

Hostname = mercury.domain.com
Certificate Name = mercury.domain.com

[url] (Works Fine because certificate name is mercury.domain.com)

[url] (Name of site don't match mercury.domain.com despite redirection to hostname IN WHM)

[url](Works fine, Host name = othersite.com and match certificate name)

[url](Name of site don't match mercury.domain.com despite redirection to hostname IN WHM)

What I suspect is that cpanel redirect but NOT to the actual hostname (mercury.domain.com) or otherwise present/display the hostname incorrectly so that it don't match the certificate.

WHM 11 setting: Redirect to ssl ports = enabled
Two further settings, redirect to hostname = enabled

(None of the settings have any effect anyway and I tested hostname, certificate name and origin domain name redirect with the same results)

Security Management Company

May 15, 2007

My server recently was hacked and the hacker put up a Bank of America subdomain phishing site. My box got unplugged because of it.

I remember months ago there was a company that everyone was recommending to manage servers where they go in and tighten all security vulnerabilities, apply patches, etc etc at a low monthly fee.

Can anyone direct me to what company is the "recommendation of the moment" ?

Dedicated Server Company In Europe

Apr 30, 2008

actually I have my dedicated server with ThePlanet since many years ago, where I'm really happy, but due to recent spanish laws, I need to move everything to a european dedicated server as ThePlanet isn't certificated at the "Safe Harbor directive".

============
This is what I actually have:

2x1024 MB DDR 266 ECC
1 Dell 1600SC Dual Xeon MB DAT54AMB8C2
2 Intel P4 Xeon 2.8 GHz 533FSB (4x2.8)
2500Gb Bandwidth
Linux+Cpanel
============

What I'm looking for, is a serius company (no reseller company) with similar dedicated servers configurations. What I'm looking for is also a 1Gbps uplink connection. Bandwith is not so important, as my monthly bandwidth is only about 300Gb.

I've seen very fast (connection) servers in Netherland but don't know how serious they are.

OVH (apparently) looks also fine, but I've read very bad reviews about them.

Backups: Managed Backup Company, Or DIY With Dedicated Server

Apr 1, 2009

We have 2 servers which run our website. One for data (about 50gb) and one for databases (about 5gb)

We currently perform offsite backups but we want to improve upon these. Our main objectives are:

1) Be able to recover as much info as possible in the event of a disaster

2) Be able to rollback to a previous version should we not notice a problem until later (ie 30 day history?)

3) Be able to restore as quickly as possible

4) Be able to afford it!

The options we seem to have are:

A) Use a service such as backupdirect.net which specialise in offsite backup and have specialised software to handle this. Obviously we get support, the backups are encrypted, etc and probably will end up with a much more robust backup solution.

However, it will take time to restore, if our server goes down we still have to get that working then perform the restore

B) Buy another dedicated server, which we can run everything on (albeit slowly!) and keep a 'live backup' on this server. This means we could switch to it should our main servers die for any reason with minimal downtime. Downsites would mean we have less support, would have to be careful with encryption of the data flowing from one server to another and we would have a less formal backup solution (eg harder to restore back to a point in time)

High-End Complex Hosting Solutions

Jun 29, 2009

Other than Rackspace, can the good folks here recommend some data-centers that have experience in handling the following solutions:

SAN (F/C, 10Gbps), 9TB usable capacity, complete redundancy, and real-time mirroring to an additional SAN in a separate geographic location.

redundant Brocade SAN switches

Servers: Quad processors, quad core, 48GB RAM, 8x146GB SAS Drives, multiple 1Gbps NICs

VMWare installations and handling.

Load balancers (preferably Brocade)

Dedicated L3 switches

I'm not just looking at providing this, but someone who can truly manage it 24/7 - management from VMWare and SAN perspective.

I saw some niche datacenters, but ran into the following problems:

(a) singular location.

(b) support for VMWare and SAN provided during business hours only

(c) no prior experience in real-time SAN replication / VMWare, Oracle/MS-SQL Replication.

Complex Initrd Issue Probably Involving A Broken Sh

Aug 10, 2007

We had someone take a look at our server for security issues, and they believed that one way of keeping "hackers at bay" would be to write an sh wrapper that only allowed root access. Well, this immediately broke the system.

I have spent about six hours now attempting to fix this. We're using Red Hat Enterprise 4, and the recovery disc doesn't have the SCSI drivers we need to even mount the hard drive, so that's out. I can't skip initrd because it apparently contains the drivers for the hard drive, but it's also not allowing the system to boot up. I have tried setting kernel emergency in grub, but it still loads initrd and breaks. Without initrd, I get a kernel panic while mounting the hard drive. Annoyingly enough, doing cat initrd-version.img at the grub prompt shows the file just fine, so why is initrd required for mounting the drive if it's already accessible? Also, it doesn't look like there's any way to edit initrd from grub, which is a real pain in the head because I could always comment out the offending lines. And of course, even though I can see the initrd file, I can't do anything else with the file system. I have requested of the data center to provide a boot disc that can mount the hard drive, and if that can be done, then I can go in and make the changes immediately and hope that it works, but without that, it seems I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

When I say "broken", what happens is I get "Out of memory: Killed process x (procname)" which then repeats itself infinitely, killing any process which would load.

The data center says that they HAVE no boot discs capable of mounting the hard drive. This is utterly ridiculous, because the only option from here is to order the expensive OS reload. I'll never use Red Hat again.

At the moment we haven't nailed down our exact requirements so I'm just really looking for any recommendations you guys might have. I've done a wee bit of Googling and have found a company called Rackspace but I'm ideally looking to contact around 5 companies to see who can offer us the best deal.

Budget Dedicated; A Good Company

Sep 14, 2008

I'm with burstnet and they're pretty good, however I do have some downtime and that's really my main issue. I need my sites to be online 24/7, or as close to that as possible.

I have a budget of around $80 per month, which isn't much, but I don't need any top of the range server, I'd love to go with singlehop, they look amazing, but their pricing is out of my range.

Can anybody recommend any good companies, with good uptime and a reasonable support team? It would be brilliant if they had some sort of remote reboot facility, as waiting for the company support team to reboot can be a pain...

I don't need much, the server is just to host my person websites, project ideas etc. I need around 1TB bandwidth, 100GB diskspace maybe... I could probably manage on shared hosting right now, however I need the freedom of my own dedicated. I've had a bad experience with VPSs before, so they're out of the question.

I've searched, but burst seems to be my only option, which is disappointing.

Requirements:
<$80 P/M
~100GB Disk space
~1TB bandwidth
~10 IPs.

No control panel, I can manage that myself

Hosting Company (from Shared To Dedicated)

May 3, 2008

I’m not sure this I the right place to post this, but since I’ll need also a dedicated server I guess it is (I’m sorry if it’s not).

Hi to you all.

I’m developing my own site. This will be my very first time building and managing a site, so I’m for sure a noob on this type of stuff (but I have a good general knowledge on computers (I build my own computers and solve every problem I encounter)).
The site will be managed by joomla 1.5 plus a phpbb3 forum (maybe vbulleting in the future). Obviously when my site is completed and published on the net I’ll have zero members, but I hope to see this number increase (lol…from 0 members it isn’t a hard thing to accomplish…I guess ).

Having a really low number of members and visitors I think that I’ll start from a shared hosting plan (or VPS) and then go up to a dedicated server (when I’ll need it…I hope soon )….probably a managed dedicated server since I don’t know much of the technicalities needed to manage a dedicated server.

This being said, I would prefer to go for a good hosting company (cheap…but reliable) that has both shared and dedicated hosting plans so when I’ll have to upgrade (from shared/VPS to dedicated) everything will be smoothly managed by them.

The site/forum aims to have a large community, a good n° of hosted files (images and mp3’s (recorded voice) ---> everything legal!)

What hosting company would you suggest?

Is it possible to have the site on one server and the forum on another? (considering that the forum will be integrated in the joomls CMS with a bridge).

Vps- Managed- Semi-dedicated- Large Or Small Company

Sep 10, 2007

As you can see I have questions. Until I saw and read some posts on this forum I thought I had some answers...

I was looking into a VPS with 1and1.com
Seemed to have good stats, and is a fairly large company. The plans were nice, was going to start off on their VPS 2 package with 20GB/2000GB, 245MB ram burstable to 512MB. All was well, since their packages seemed to offer the most for the least, if you know what I mean. I also liked the ability to upgrade the package without interrupting my service.

I read some posts here, and looked into a VPS even more, and now Im not so sure about 1and1.com or the thought of even having a VPS.

I have no experience with a VPS. So running it would be all new. Im not computer illiterate and I have taken many network and network operating classes. So I have some experience with command line linux. I have messed with some IIS, and a LAMP. On the other side, it scares me that I could f**k something up and bring down the site.

Now, for my needs. The site when launched has a predicted demand of a few thousand users over the course of a month. This is a business site, so downtime, and a shared environment don't seem to make sense. The site is very mysql intensive, at least by my standards. Most pages have 3-6 queries, main pages can have 10+, and most user actions include a few queries. The most load I could fathom would be all 1,000-4,000 users hitting the site hard for 3-4 days. This is now, next 'season' could be twice that load. In between seasons seasons we were going back to shared until the site starts making more money, and we fill in the off season with some other money making service.

The reason why I thought VPS was budget, and just we wouldnt want to be on a shared hosting plan, and somehow our demand was larger than expected and they shut down the site. So do yall think that a VPS is the right way to go? We have the budget to go VPS($40-$80) a month for 3 months, before going back to shared.

About 1and1.com: I read a few threads, some recent, that seem to say they oversell even a VPS. This doesnt make much sense since its supposed to gaurente those resources to me. The company is so big, but even these few posts and accusations are keeping me from commiting. My main concern is that between when we launch it and when our first spike of demand hits is only 2 months, so I dont want to learn that 1and1.com sucks firsthand.

Ive seen other hosts that this forum sponsers, so I assume there is *some* prefernce to use them, but like jaguarpc.com VPS plans seem to be a little more $ for a little less (storage and bandwidth) when comparing to other deals.

DNS Server And DNS Management

Jan 10, 2009

i have few dedi servers from one Us company, i am currently using their DNS service, we are into small level hosting, i want to run my own DNS, is it necessary to run a separate server for DNS?

Actually how the hosting companies do the name server pointing, for an example if i am buying a server and want to host a few domains in that server, what normally we do is we will change the name server to that companies name server
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

my question is if i am pointing my domains name server to the name server
ns1.companydomain.com
ns2.companydomain.com

how that company points the domain to my server for an example its ip is 72.xx.52.xx i am bit confused in this.

Also i have a doubt how they are creating this for n number of domains?

DMZ Server Management & PCI

Sep 14, 2009

We are working on our pci certification ( fun times right? ) and i was wondering what other people do for server management in the dmz. Few things we are looking at listed below. We will be doing cisco zbfw for firewalling and using NAT.

#1
Servers have 2 nics, 2 ips, gateway ect. One of the networks would be considered a "management vlan/network". Other network would be for all other traffic, including natting to the internet, and traffic to the "internal" zone but locking down traffic to source, destination, and protocol level.
On windows you really on have 1 true default gateway, and because windows doesnt just send traffic out the interface it came in, but looks at the routing table, some network routing issues popped up.

#2
Use only 1 nic/vlan/ip/gateway. Lock down traffic to source, destination, and protocol level for dmz to "internal" traffic and do an "inspect" statement to allow all necessary traffic back in and drop everything else. "Internal" to dmz would just be an inspect all because this traffic wouldnt need to be firewalled so management traffic would work just fine.

What Server Management Package

If you are deploying PHP and MySQL along with a site/application, how do you do it? Do you work with the individual components, or do you lean towards ready-made packages?

Freelance Server Management

Mar 14, 2008

Maybe I'm underestimating the importance of server management, but I can't see how it is worth it to pay $300 per month for a server that can be built for $700 with the co-location costing about $100 per month.

So, I'm thinking that I can build a server or just buy a server that was considered excellent 2 years ago off of Ebay for about $700 or maybe less. From there, I simply need to find a $100 per month co-location hosting place and a freelance server dude to keep the thing updated for me and work out problems if they actually come up.

So with that said, where is a good place to find a freelance server manager?
