I have found this forum through searching google for articles etc about the best/cheapest host for a small forum, and I think this is the best place to ask I have searched the many topics on this but none of them quite answer my question, so I apologise for repeating what may have already been done.
Anyway....
I currently use a free host (forumotion) and have become increasingly frustrated at not having total control over my forum, and not having access to the database.
I figure now will be a good time to move as the forum is only a couple of months old.
So what I am looking for is a basic hosting package including domain name, that can support phpbb version 3. Im looking for cheap and cheerful basically. I dont know enough about this kind of thing to elaborate, but here are my forum stats;
Number of posts 10781
Posts per day 121.13
Number of topics 625
Topics per day 7.02
Number of users 153
Users per day 1.72

As you can see it is pretty small.....it may grow over the next couple of years but has a shelf life of 2010 as that is when the TV show finishes (its a Lost forum), and it may continue for a while after that but I dont expect it to go on and on and on
We have a lot of media posted, mainly youtube vids and jpeg, and we also have a small aracde, so i'm guessing I would need a lot of room there? Plus we have newsletters that would need to be hosted as online versions but they are just html documents.
I hope I have given enough information....oh budget wise I am looking at cheapest possible as I dont want to start charging members to fund the hosting costs.
I am trying to create a phpbb3 forum that can hold like 100 members. I am looking for hosting that will support my forum, is a decent price, and if I don't have to lock in any months thats an added bonus.
i have Suhosin installed on my server now some of my sites are facing problem i.e forums like ipb , vbulliten ,phpbb3 with the images on the forum are not displaying properly..
So is this problem related to the values of these two fields present in Suhosin
I'm considering moving from free to budget hosting. The maximum I would be able to pay would be $5 per month, and I don't really like the idea of a contract over 2 years.
I've been looking around, and it seems like 1 and 1 has the best deal. They allow unlimited domains, which is good as I plan on trying to host quite a few sites off one account. They also offer 10 MySQL db's. This is what i'm mainly concerned about, as most of my sites use 1-3 db's.
Does anyone have anything to say about 1&1? Or any other budget host recommendations?
I've been a customer of Budget VPS Hosting for about 10 months now and figured it was about time I wrote a review
I signed up initially for B-VPS's 111 package (CPU 100MHZ HD 10GB RAM 100MB BW 100GB PORT 100mbps, 100KB/s Uplink). There was a major fiasco with my Paypal account, which resulted in the payment eventually being treated as "spurious" and B-VPS being asked to refund the amount!
Despite this, Jon who handles support at B-VPS was very patient and agreed to help me get a 2nd VPS to work with (even with the 1st one still not paid!). I've since upgraded this server to a VPS333 account and in January this year, I signed up for a 2nd server with B-VPS
Pro's: - Great support! I'm based in Asia, so timezones work against me. Despite that, I can usually expect a response with 12 hours of opening a ticket. Some problems took a very long time to resolve (I'm looking at you OpenVZ) but Jon stuck with me on figuring out the source of the problem.
Regarding provisoning of the VPS, I got my login details within a hour of putting in the order for both my orders
- Pricing: The VPS111 package costs just 5 USD/month and is more than enough to run some low-volume websites. Heck, with some careful tweaking you could even run a CMS on that.
-Bandwidth: I get very good speeds when running package installs from the server. My East Coast VPS (600K uplink) has a public speedtest page for folks who'd like to check this out from themselves: http://torbox.theaveragegeek.com/speedtest/
Cons: -Uptime: To be honest, Uptime has been a bit of a mixed bag. My central DC VPS (Limestone hosted) has had some pretty significant outages, where the host node is completely offline for upto 4 hours. The East Coast VPS (Burstnet) has had no issues so far though.
-CPU & RAM: Budget VPS does not offer Burst CPU or RAM. This can be a tad frustrating especially if you need a little extra RAM/CPU for installing packages but not otherwise. I'm not going to debate this (at B-VPS's prices, I've been able to afford the beefier package that allows me to do both ) but you should keep this in mind.
Well that's the review. I highly recommend B-VPS if you are looking to host a low-usage VPS cheaply and quickly!
I've seen a lot of discussion regarding low budget providers and am surprised I haven't seen many mentioning Wholesale Internet. I'd like to give my personal review.
I've used them several times over the past two years, and currently have two boxes with them. Support has always been professional and fair.
It has been my experience that they tend to go above and beyond what the customer expects, which seems rare for budget hosts. I have never been nickel and dimed over a small upgrade or service.
Uptime is as good as it gets. Hardware seems reliable. Delivery time is fairly quick. Their prices on servers with DirectAdmin are impressive.
I would wholeheartedly reccomend them to anyone in need of a budget box. Their prices are extremely competitive, and they can do seem to give extremely good custom quotes if nothing they offer quite meets your needs.
to start a web design and hosting business and am in need of some hosting for it all...
I've looked at the reseller hosting at [url] which looks good, but they said that I cannot host a 'file distribution' web site. Because one of the sites I will be hosting is an eCommerce application that sells videos for download, I'm not sure whether this would be allowed. I read the SLA and I think it would be, as long as the bandwidth didn't exceed 25GB per month.
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of other web hosting packages that might be suitable for everything I need (PHP4, PHP5, MySQL) that weren't too expensive. I don't really want to pay more than £40 per month.
Ideally I'd like unlimited bandwidth and data transfer and web space, but if not, at least enough for a good number of sites!
I ordered a domain from Name and a shared hosting package from Hawk Host. How do I set them up so they work together? I thought all I had to do was add the Hawk Host name servers to my Name account but that doesn't seem to be helping. I don't have any webpages up yet but I do have some files uploaded to be used as a redirect for a game server. The redirect isn't loading properly most of the time and when I type my domain name into a browser my directory won't show up either, just the parking page. I ordered both of these last week.
I own a smf forum with usually 100-150 online users and sometimes it reaches 600-1000. My hosting refuses to host my forum anymore cause there is heavy cpu usage on their server.
So I want to ask you if there is any share web hosting provider that can host my forum with a reasonable prise.
I want to host a invision forum. I have a lot of exp admining and modding but I have never run one myself.
I plan on using 15-30 gigs of material on site and the rest will be offsite storage.
I do not know how many members I will have it could be just a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand.
My question. I was planning on going with WiredTree because of all the great reiviews out there. And buying thier vps512 which has 60 gigs of storage and 800 monthly bandwith.
Will that be enough do you think? More, less? I would like to stay within 50-100 dollars. since I am mainly running this for recreation and not looking to make a profit.
I have never hosted a website or such before, but after reading here and doing research I do not really want a shared server.
A webserver or web hosting account running on any major Operating System with support for PHP
A SQL database system, one of: FireBird 2.0 or above MySQL 3.23 or above MS SQL Server 2000 or above (directly or via ODBC) Oracle PostgreSQL 7.x or above SQLite
PHP 4.3.3 or above with support for the database you intend to use. The optional presence of the following modules within PHP will provide access to additional features, but they are not required. zlib Compression support Remote FTP support XML support Imagemagick support
Of course free hosts are preferred, but nothing too expensive will do fine aswell. n_n
I have been hosting a Snitz ASP forum on a friends Windows 2003 webserver for the last 4 years. The forum has been slowing down recently and my friend has told me to sling my hook!
I'm presuming that our Snitz forum must have a database behind it (think its Access).
This is where I'm getting confused when it comes to looking for web hosting services.
LxAdmin recently changed their name to Kloxo, which also introduced some new features.
I've setup a Kloxo cluster, with the main server on 1 server, and all the others (mail, dns, web) on another server - still testing it out.
Then I created a package in Kloxo with some limits and gave it a name. Then, I went into WHMCS, and added the product, and chose LxAdmin from the modules drop-down.
I then proceeded to add the package name in, and told WHMCS to "Get the available choices from the server" and then I get the following error:
Quote:
Fatal Error. Got a non-object from the server:
I've tested it with 2 different WHMCS installations
I'm doing some work for a client, they have a linux developer package with Fasthosts for an existing website.
[url]
what I can't seem to work out from the Fasthosts website is whether I could register another domain with this package to save having to buy further hosting. Both websites are pretty small.
Im thinking about launching a dating/social networking website and i was told that i will need a managed dedicated server package and i just want to know if anyone can recommend a company that offers a high quality reliable service like this? Price is obviously important too.
I would also like to know if countries like India offer good reliable high quality managed dedicated server packages too? Or if its better to go with a company in the United Kingdom or the USA etc?
Perhaps there is someone on this forum who also runs a dating/social networking website and can recommend a good dedicated managed hosting package as well?
I am the owner of the vbulletin forum. The forum is young but it is growing rapidly. It has 11000 posts, 800 members and about 30 users online. I use many mods which are server intensive.
I was on a semi-dedicated hosting (Westnic), which I shared with my friend to reduce the costs. Now I feel I should move on, because this package is becoming too small for both of us.
I wanted to upgrade my hosting package to a bigger one, but now when I have read so many horrible stories about this host, I really don't want to stay with Westnic.
So I am looking for a reliable host for my forum.
I am still now sure whether I need a semi-dedicated, VPS or a dedicated server. Also, I am not sure how much dedicated memory a forum like mine would need. Also, I am not sure about the location of the server - does it really matter?
This is the letter I've faxed 7 days ago(May 12, 2009) and NO RESPONSE! ------------------------------------------------------------
Open letter to Lunar Pages (Add2Net),
Hello Lunar Pages (Add2Net), I’m writing this letter in order to let you how unsatisfied we are with your service. We have opened account on March 28 2009 and still we are not able to work out with your Staff to make our website work today is May 12, 2009.
First we have ordered the VPS(windows) hosting with SQL server database and it took 3 times for your administrators to understand that we need a Windows hosting NOT Linux. It’s obvious if you use Sql Server you’ll need to use Windows server with ASPNet technology Right? Not for your staff.
Secondly we have provided the database but don’t have any reasonable rights at your servers so we have to wait for days for your untrained administrators to do some work for us. I understand the security procedures you should understand US, we have business to run which is waiting for days.
Let me explain this problem in more detail and tell you OUR “database story” from the beginning:
We have provided the files then your staff installed that on some separated server from our hosting, than re-installed that on our VPS server than they have returned that to that separate server (round trip yes it is). After that we have asked them to update our database, they said OK. We have provided the files from SQL 2008, than member of your staff said
“Unfortunately, we do not support SQL Server 2008 on VPS plans, nor the 2005 version due to the high amounts of system resources they consume. However, we can create a database for you on a remote MS SQL 2005 server where you are allowed 1 G of database / 300 MB log. The IP of your VPS would be white listed and you would be allowed to connect to the database only from the VPS's IP.”

Response by M. M. (hidden for privacy reasons initials are correct)
Ok than I spent 2-3 days in converting the database. When I’ve uploaded the files your Senior Windows Admin R. D. (hidden for privacy reasons initials are correct)was unable to attach our database because our file was too big?? And he asked me to cut the file of 380MB in parts. Does he knows how long it would take me to do that and to make everything to work … maybe 3 months? So I had to do His job and do research online what he could do too but he didn’t. So I made the script for him which I’ve also tested and send that to him with an explanation (digested so 2 year old kid could understand not a Senior Admin). But, Mr. R R. D. didn’t. So I have to make few calls to get in touch with him and to explain to him what he should do. So finally he did it on Apr 29 2009 and it worked like charm. But, this is not the end … our “hell story” it is just the middle of the story. Since than Apr 29 2009 I was in constant contact with Mr. D.(hidden for privacy reasons initials are correct) asking him to make some corrections to OUR ONLY database so our website could work properly as ANY other ASPNET website. I also tried to apply changes myself but I don’t have enough permission so my hands are tied. So finally I’ve got in touch with him over the phone after 3 days of trying (nobody ever answered the phone with his extension "3...") but the phone call was disconnected and I was unable to reach him again. He responded: “I am sorry that our phone call was cut short. It appears that the connection between my location and the main office was interrupted.
As I was trying to explain on the phone THe permissions that you are requesting are not capable to work on this environment. There are two reason as explained to me by the admin who has setup the SQL Service for VPS customers. First reason is this will prevent the possibility of SQL Injections as a security precaution. The second reason is related to overall usage on the server. This will prevent any one customer running away with the available resources on the server. With these two factors in place the permissions that you have requested are not available at this time Unless you upgrade to a dedicated server.”
The problem is that we have ran our website with 2 previous hosting companies websol.us (it’s still running there because we weren’t able to switch to Lunar yet)and viux.com on shared web servers with smaller packages than we are having with you (VPS), and had no problems and hadn’t been asked to run this on dedicated servers. This company is small and website is small too believe it or not. I’ve been worked on a lot bigger projects and never had problems like this.
My question is: (the same I’ve posted on Friday May 08, 2009 at 11:24 PM …and no answer yet):
Can you please help us and contact the only educated person there Mr.A. K. (who is our last hope) and ask him if he could give the right permissions for our ASPNET user there so our website could function normally? Can you pleas ask him if he could be of immediate assistance for us if ask for help in next few days do we can finally have our website working properly.
If not I’ll have to ask for a full refund and cover of expenses for our "lost time". ------------------------------------------------------------
So maybe our friends at LP will respond now!
p.s. I'll be very happy to confirm our domain name so WHT "WE" exist as customers of LP.
How would I go about creating my own website for free forum hosting? You know, sites such as ProBoards and Forumer. A site where someone can fill in some information (name, URL, e-mail, etc.) and instantly have their own phpBB, IPB, or MyBB forum.
I could host it, but I don't understand how to make it so right when they click submit it creates them a forum. If someone could point me in the right direction or link me to a tutorial (which I doubt exists),
I am using Bluehost as my primary / public server and yes had my own horror stories with them.. But I am still with them since they sorted things out with me. Any way... Bluehost has a Cap Limit of you can send somewhat 50 - 500 mails ( I just called them and raised it to 500).
I run a phpbb3 forum and want to send monthly newsletters to my members, I have more then 500 people so how exactly can I send them newsletters ?
Is there any special script that you use or special software that I need to run that will automatically get the email list from the phpbb3 board and send the emails every hour or something ?
i switched my host and have done a database backup of my phpbb2 forum. the new host only has phpbb3 - the sql doesn't load because the database structure has changed. is there any tool online that can go through my sql to convert them for phpbb3 use?
