Changing Host & Converting Phpbb2 To Phpbb3
Mar 19, 2008
i switched my host and have done a database backup of my phpbb2 forum. the new host only has phpbb3 - the sql doesn't load because the database structure has changed. is there any tool online that can go through my sql to convert them for phpbb3 use?

I'm running CentOS with a postfix mail server.
I haven't experienced mail problems on other CMS systems - so the basic setup should be working okay - but apparently not that well.
I get the famous emailer.php line 234 error when some users send PMs to each other... The PMs go through, but the error is annoying none the less.
Does anyone have a decent solution for this?
The phpbb community advise to make a Google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=configuring+php+mail ) or use SMTP just don't do it for me - and I don't want to leave some big hole for spammers.

I changed web hosting company yesterday. I uploaded all the files to the new server. I checked to see if it works by looking at ip/~username All looked good so I changed the DNS to new hosting company's
Today the website is not found. DNS information is correct and I can still see my site by going to [url]
I have not cancelled my old web hosting and all the files are still there. I have no idea what is happening and I cannot get hold of my new web hosting company.

I have access to the DNS Zone where the accounts are currently hosted and I would like to change these so it a quick change over from old host to new host.
Do I change the Minimum TTL which is currently 86400?
Do I change the TTL for each A record which are currently 14400?
Do I change the nameservers in the DNS record from what they are now to the new host nameservers?

if its possible to change the reverse lookup, or at least i think thats what it is called.
I have 2 accounts on my CentOS, WHM/cPanel VPS and they are hosted on their own seperate IPs however when you do a lookup on one domain it also lists the other domain as being hosted on the server and vice-versa.
How do i change this so they appear like they are on different servers? Each one has their own nameservers which are on seperate IPs also.

When changing host, does this affect the webpage design? I am currently with Microsoft Office Live and thinking about changing to Hostgator. If I do, is it possible to retain the existing page templates / layout?

I am using Bluehost as my primary / public server and yes had my own horror stories with them.. But I am still with them since they sorted things out with me. Any way... Bluehost has a Cap Limit of you can send somewhat 50 - 500 mails ( I just called them and raised it to 500).
I run a phpbb3 forum and want to send monthly newsletters to my members, I have more then 500 people so how exactly can I send them newsletters ?
Is there any special script that you use or special software that I need to run that will automatically get the email list from the phpbb3 board and send the emails every hour or something ?

I have found this forum through searching google for articles etc about the best/cheapest host for a small forum, and I think this is the best place to ask I have searched the many topics on this but none of them quite answer my question, so I apologise for repeating what may have already been done.
Anyway....
I currently use a free host (forumotion) and have become increasingly frustrated at not having total control over my forum, and not having access to the database.
I figure now will be a good time to move as the forum is only a couple of months old.
So what I am looking for is a basic hosting package including domain name, that can support phpbb version 3. Im looking for cheap and cheerful basically. I dont know enough about this kind of thing to elaborate, but here are my forum stats;
Number of posts 10781
Posts per day 121.13
Number of topics 625
Topics per day 7.02
Number of users 153
Users per day 1.72
Most users ever online 40
Stats generated on Tue Jul 08, 2008 2:31 am

As you can see it is pretty small.....it may grow over the next couple of years but has a shelf life of 2010 as that is when the TV show finishes (its a Lost forum), and it may continue for a while after that but I dont expect it to go on and on and on
We have a lot of media posted, mainly youtube vids and jpeg, and we also have a small aracde, so i'm guessing I would need a lot of room there? Plus we have newsletters that would need to be hosted as online versions but they are just html documents.
I hope I have given enough information....oh budget wise I am looking at cheapest possible as I dont want to start charging members to fund the hosting costs.

I just built a low end server using a 4u chassis I had at home. Before bringing it to the colo facility, I was wondering if I would be better to put the hardware in a 2u chassis instead to save money on the long run.
I am considering the 2u SC826 SuperMicro chassis. I am used to buy my parts from the local shop. I can fix my current 4u server since it does not contain 'proprietary' parts such as backplanes that are built for a specific server.
I could save about 55$ per month by colocating a 2u instead of a 4u server. The chassis is about 700-800$.
I was wondering how easy it is to replace a proprietary part such as a backplane if my server breaks in 3 to 4 years? Will I be left with an unusable chassis if I cannot find the part? Is it worth it to have a 2u chassis vs 4u when I can fit any standard component in the 4u while I need more expensive and hard to find parts for the 2u? How many years can I expect to be able to find replacement parts for proprietary hardware such as backplanes in such a 2u chassis?

I got ffmpeg, mencoder and flvtool2 installed on my server (centos 4) but when I try use them, the size comes off substantially bigger then what I can do on my PC.
For example I've been using Sorenson Squeeze (using Sorenson codec) and say at 240brate(video) and 32 (audio) and at 320-240, it comes to about 100 megs for a 50 min video.
Is there some good strategy on using these free tools effectively? or do the free codecs just can't compare to the paid ones?
What would be the commands that you guys would run to get the best size for those specified options I mentioned? On mencoder and flvtool2 that is. I have the latest versions installed.

I have a slight issue that some of my emails are being converted to a htm file and attached to the email. I am using exchange server and outlook.
For example if I received an email and it was converted into a htm file and the body of the email was deleted so only the attachment existed which included the email.
There is no trend to this as sometimes it happens and on other occasions it doesn’t.
Besides this when I receive a read receipt many of these are converted to a normal email. I know this can happen from the senders side but I know for sure that some of the read receipts received should include outlooks read receipt icon although this is not happening. Is this something to do with exchange or my outlook installation.

I recently signed up with cartikahosting.com only to find out they do not support SQL server 2005 when I tried to install my application.
Their features and price are excellent so I would like to stay with cartika if possible, is there a way to convert my database to 2000? Or backup the database using sql server scripts?

It seems that now matter what I change in the new config it doesn't work or work as expected.

Everytime I deleted an Ip set up by WHM, this one nameserver always comes back and deletes one that I already set up.
69.50.221.151 NS19.NSHOSTER.NET
No matter what I change it to, that NS19.NSHOSTER.net keeps overwriting an NS that i set. What's wrong? When i try to delete with WHM
Quote:
Removing Nameserver Ip 69.50.221.151
Sorry, the nameserver ip 69.50.221.151 cannot be removing since it is still registered with an ICANN register.
I can only go through ssh.

My Linux box has a set IP address that never changes. However, I am switching my server from one collocation to another so in the process my IP address will be different.
The last time I switched my box, I had my ISP admin change the IP address within my linux box, but now that might not be an option.
So in linux, CentOS 4.1, how do I change the IP address on the box?
As much as I can remember, I had to change it in:
/etc/netstart
But I also remember there is another file that needs to be edited within the server to change the IP.

I have been with this hosting company for almost five years now and until today the service has been excellent. I am having massive ftp issues. I have 41 different domains that I run for a variety of projects. Needless to say I keep each website in a different folder. I just tried to switch one of my blogs from blogger to wordpress. Blogger won't let me have my domain back and keeps blocking it with a 404 error. But that is a separate issue. I tried using one of my extra domains and pointing it at my new blog folder. But it keeps bouncing back to my root directory. I contacted 1and1 and they reset the server, but now they are blaming me for the issue. I can access the blog through it's subdirectory but I can't post the blog there.
Anyways, I am not ready to move over all of my websites, but I do want to move my blog to a new host. I am mainly hoping that I can escape 1and1 and blogger in one move if I change the host of this one website. It's funny I have been happy for years and recommended them to friends, but now I am very disappointed. Can someone recomend a reliable host? I am looking for one with a cheap lowend package to start off. If I end up staying I will need a lot of bandwidth as I have a podcast that had a lot of traffic. Basically, there are so many companies that I just can't tell which ones are reliable. That's my main concern. Also I use SQL a lot. Thanks!

I'm setting up my dns records for a backup mailserver and setting up another ns record in case of server / datacentre problems.
My question is, do I need to specify the ip address of the external hostname and the external namserver in the local dns record?
e.g mail.mydomaim.com in A **.***.**.**
then add mail.outside-domain.com in A **.***.**.**.
I dont think its necessary but want to double check.

I'm changing my webhost after getting screwed around with countless downtimes and now their own site is completely down.
I'm looking for a new host, and had been looking at alot of review sites. After looking at a few of them, found that they were obviously fakes with almost 100% good reviews for some hosts, completely dissing some other hosts, and the complete opposite on some other sites.
Looking for recommendations for your own host, do state your site too so I can try out the response.
Criteria
excellent uptime
responsive support + live support chat
h-sphere preferred, but not a must have (I like having subdomains in directories at the same level as domains)
does not ridiculously overload their servers (well, who can tell?)
good site response time
budget at 10usd per month
allows many domains/sites, no need for super high bandwidth as I just host many small sites
PHP with .htaccess access + imagemagick/gd

I currently work for a small company that has a website hosted by a local hosting company. We have not been happy with them and are planning on switching hosts. Now I know that you are suppose to update your name servers for your domain name to point to your web host's name servers. Problem is I don't know how to get access to do this (all of this stuff was setup many years ago way before I got here).
Using whois I see our domain registrar is DomainBank.com but I have no account information to log in and change our name servers. How do I go about doing this? Is it possible our existing host did all of this originally and they have an account with DomainBank instead?

I have IIS on my computer and I want to start using a php driven forum (SMF) on my web site. Before I upload the files I need to check the following settings are on:
the engine directive must be On.
the magic_quotes_sybase directive must be set to Off.
the session.save_path directive must be set to a valid directory, or empty.
the file_uploads directive must be On.
the upload_tmp_dir must be set to a valid directory, or empty.
I cant find anywhere within IIS where these directions maybe found. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have a domain registered with Dotster and my NameServers point to Verio who is my webhost. My MX Records at Verio point to Appriver who handles my email. I'd like to get Verio totally out of the picture and just host my site at Dotster and still keep the email at Appriver. However, I'm not quite sure the order in which to change the various settings.
Do I just change the Name Servers at Doster to point to Dotster instead of Verio and then use Dotster's DNS to point the MX Records to Appriver? Would I then disable the MX Records at Verio? What about propagation of these changes...would I lose email traffic?
Do I need to change the TTL? I'm really not sure about the order of the steps.

ive been a member of these forums for a few months now, mainly scouring for CSS tips and solutions. However, i've recently purchased Kevin Yanks book; Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using MYSQL and PHP, to work through. Annoyingly i'm having a problem with the initial MySQL setup which i cant seem to find a solution to on these forums or even Google. The book instructs the user to edit the my.ini file by adding the 'old-passwords' command, but no matter what i try i cannot save any additional content to this file. i just get the error... "Cannot create C:/programfiles/mysql/mysql server 5.0/my.ini". I fear im overlooking something very simple here. Has anyone else experienced this? The only thing that comes to mind is that im running Vista, which the book predates.

to change system date back and forth.
Of course 'date -s' doesn't work on VPS. Using zic and timezones > /etc/localtime could help up to (almost) 24 hours, but dates are out of range.
Some systems can enable something like defying "Time Drift" as on some Xen versions (as shown below), but unfortunately my provider apparently doesn't support it.
# set independent_wallclock
# echo 1 > /proc/sys/xen/independent_wallclock
Is there any other way to change date on a VPS?
