Problem With Files Owned By 'nobody' When Uploaded

Aug 4, 2007

I used to have my apache 1.3.37 with PHP compiled as a CGI. Whenever i have a php script (say vbulletin forum software) that allow file uploads, files will be uploaded with the correct userid and groupid on the server. However, once i compiled PHP as ISAPI module, the files will be uploaded but will be owned by 'nobody'. Of course i can log in as root and chown it back to the right user, but it's a hassle if there are multiple user accounts on the server and they're using php software on their end. If someone is using an ftp program and tries to overwrite that uploaded file that's owned by nobody, it will not let them do so. Is there a way to fix this, or change the config files that would fix it?

How To Find How And Who Uploaded Files- Spam - Action I Can Take

Mar 27, 2009

I have a dedicated server, the server itself is secure (as far as I know) and I run lots of my sites from it. I offered a friend hosting for his flash based chat application he built.

Today I was contacted by someone; "Are you the owner of xxxx.net?" so I informed that yes, it was my server and they then showed me an email they'd received from my server. I did a search and apparently someone uploaded mail.php and a couple of files it was using to send out spam based upon a variety of conditions that the other files met. The files contained forenames and surnames, it'd use a forename and a surname then send it to popular free mail services. The email contained ramblings about new world order and promoted a website.

How can I find out how they got the files uploaded to the account and what action can I take? I checked the whois for the domain and have their contact information, however it's a large site so I'm doubtful that the owner did it. I don't want my servers IPs being blacklisted for spam :|

Files Uploaded Via Scripts & Joomla Have 600 Permissions

Jun 26, 2007

I've recently started experiencing some issues where files uploaded through Joomla or some other scripts (mostly PHP) inherit a permission of 600. Prior to updates being done on the server I'm hosted on, uploaded files received 644 permissions and all things worked great.

I've checked the umask that assigned to the shell (022) and have ruled out that as a problem.

Subdomains Half-way Created And Ignored By Apache

May 27, 2015

Since a week ago or so, in one of our Plesk 12.0.18 / Centos 6.6 servers, when we create subdomains the process seems to stop half-way without being finished.

To reproduce the error:

Select a subscription (e.g. example.com) and go to "Domains and subdomains"
Select "add new subdomain" and enter a value (e.g. new.example.com). The directory will live in parallel to httpdocs
Click Accept

Expected result:

The subdomain should be created: Filesystem diirectory with default contents, DNS entry, Apache VirtualHost, etc.

Actual result:

After several minutes Plesk responds with Internal Errror (in a red area in the panel).

Things done right:

The file space in parallels with httpdocs is created fine with the default site.
DNS entries are created under /var/named/chroot infrastructure.
The subdomain menu appears fine in the Plesk panel.

Things wrong/missing:

The filesystem directory is not mapped by Apache. Even after changing its contents the default server templeate appears in the browser, (all precautions taken, apache restart, browser in private session and different browsers).

Log info:

- /var/log/sw-cp-server/error_log says:
2015/05/27 18:17:45 [error] 28890#0: *1828 readv() failed (104: Connection reset by peer) while reading upstream, client: nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn, server: , request: "POST /smb/web/add-subdomain HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/sw-engine.sock:", host: "<hostname>:8443", referrer: "https://<host>:8443/smb/web/add-subdomain"

- /var/log/httpd/access_log records the access with 200 OK codes although I don't find them in neither subscription logs under /var/www/vhost/system/*/logs/access_log
nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn - - [27/May/2015:18:38:35 +0200] "GET <deleted_content_in_the_subdomain_directory> HTTP/1.1" 200 14036 "http://<new_subdomain>" "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:34.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/34.0

Apache :: Created Certificate - Mismatched Address Error

Apr 29, 2015

I created certificate and it appears to be working but I am always getting a cert error about a mismatched address. I have checked my settings and the certificate and host names match. It doesn't make sense. I have looked online at different forums and support sites but nothing has worked. The only thing I can think to do is to get a new cert. This cert is for an internal site only...

Weird Vsftp/ftp

Aug 4, 2007

Got a couple of questions on my Centos server.

It is my only (at present), and main production web server located in a datacentre in the Uk.

I am running Centos 4-4.2 since a hardware failure earlier this year neccesitated a stressful overnight ssh reinstall.

I have it setup pretty well now (I think!) but I cant work out how I am able to sftp into the server!

Reason being, I have installed VSFTPD (made sure there were no ftpd daemons installed or running), and when I stop this service via sshd, it does not affect the fact that I can then sftp in to the server using an ftp client such as wsftp pro...

Also, even when I change the vsftpd.conf to jail certain ftp users to a directory, it seems to have no effect and ftp works exactly as it did before without imposing the restrictions?

There is no other ftp daemon showing up in the process list.

I have tripwire installed, rootkit hunter, and cisco hardware firewall in conjunciton with ip tables.

I dont 'think' its hacked!

Also, the last time I upgraded centos was from an early v4 to 4.4.2 due to major hardware failure on the server and the fact I didnt have a mirrored OS/server backup (due to cost) *but I did of course have all my sites and databases etc)
I am rather scared to upgrade Centos kernel to the latest version in part due to horror stories I have heard from others (NOT regarding Centos specifically) from kernel upgrades going wrong or compatibility issues etc that mean that I am very very reluctant to do it on our main production server..

I am imminently buying another server to act as a failover and backup for the existing one,but is keeping my current Centos install as it is and holding out to wait for a test server the best thing to do? (are there any serious security issues in 4.4.2? bugs etc?)
Or should I have confidence and get Yum to do its business!

Transferring Files From One VPS Account To Another

WHM Not Listing Account, DNS Etc, Missing Files, File System

Jul 26, 2009

I recently had an issue where my box wasnt listing accounts (on logging into WHM for the first time it would, thereafter browsing different functions in WHM it would fail to list any accounts), would not list any zone items when editing DNS zones and in general was acting very strange.

I think the tech support chap narrowed it down to zero free inodes on the filesystem (i was even getting errors when editing files with 'vi'). This was increased for the VPS and all issues seemed to be resolved...

However named and httpd were not starting after reboots. Again on looking closely named and httpd were missing from /etc/init.d (on CentOS 5.3)! This is very strange and i certainly didnt modify those nor delete such critical files.

For a second opinion, is there any cPanel script that can be ran to fix the issues, i am concerned other things have been affected but havent manifested themselves yet (other files deleted etc). Does cPanel update script create the init.d files or is this done by the CentOS operating systems itself? Are these files modified during a cPanel update script?

These init.d files for named and httpd have been readded (copied across from another box) and it seems to be ok again, but ideas on howto proceed much appreciated, as i mentioned i dont want any nasty supprises!

HostNine - Hijacked A Client Account; Won't Give Files Back

Apr 21, 2008

I have been with HostNine for almost a year now and have had reasonably decent service, until now.

They recently suspended one of my client's accounts. Understandable, the account had some very old PHP files on them. Let me preface this by stating that I am very sympathetic to hosts who have to deal with problem clients who have sites that slow down shared servers for everyone else on them.

I have tried my hardest to work with HostNine to get these files back and ensure that this account is not a problem on their server. I have never once asked for them to restore the account "as is", all have I have asked is that they backup the files and the database for me (I would do it myself, but they locked me out of the account), so that I can investigate the problem and do testing to ensure that it doesn't cause them problems again.

All in all, getting anyone to co-operate has been unsuccessful. Getting a hold of them has been a hassle (from the time I e-mailed them about the issue to the time I received my first response was a span of over 6 hours). Getting them to co-operate has been impossible. Their "Support Manager", Alex, in broken English has told me next to nothing, aside to accuse me of trying to "get around this" and that I would need to move the account to one of their dedicated plans. I have asked that the account simply be backed up, but have not received any response so far, as time ticks away and the client whose account this was becomes more and more frustrated as their files are effectively being "held hostage".

My last complaint is that they never notified myself, nor the client that they had suspended the account.

Has anyone else had problems with trying to get their files back after a host has locked you out of your account? What are my options? Does the hosting company technically "own" the files, simply because they are being hosted on their server?
