I have a (dedicated) server out of control. It is managed by a 3rd party company who has never been able to get the spam and server load under control. Loads average over 5! and there is no activity in top other than sendmail and mailscanner (with Ensim).
I turned off mailscanner and sendmail while I typed this and server load went to .08.
I'm going to switch (dedicated) servers to a new provider (for reasons above plus a few others) which will include managed service from the server provider as well.
There are only a few programs that need to run on this server. VBulletin is the main concern.
I want to lock down all mail access. I want vbulletin to be able to send outgoing email as part of its administration and as part of its member notifications.
I don't want ANYONE OUTSIDE THE SERVER to be able to send mail through this server.
One idea I have had is to use DNS to assign all MX records of every domain on the machine to the free gmail service.
I have one domain on this machine (and important domain) that gets thousands and thousands of spam. I assigned its' MX records to NO-IP.com who filters and forwards email to me. That has worked - but server load never budged.
I am running a small hosting operation and would like to know more about SPAM filtering and controlling. SpamAssasin is installed on my server but it does not do much. I was looking into different solution with a anti-spam device and would like to know which one is recommended the most: sonicwall, barracuda or symantec? (total email addresses is less than at thousand)
switched to ipower.com and not getting any help - really stuck as my customer wanted better spam filtering so I went to them on a recommendation and I do not know how to turn on and what is the best setting for spam filtering with their panel. Also using HORDE where I can set a filter using rules but it only works if I log on and hit apply filter so my customer still gets it in his in box -
Ive been having some issues with my cpanel lately... it seems everytime I add an account via whm or a subdomain via cpanel it locks up when "Restarting Apache"
I have 2 identical servers, 1 runs fine... this one though ive reinstalled apache...multiple times with no results... now im reinstalling cpanel and it seems forzen at 50% and just says
i have question about locking in homedir.. i bought few weeks ago debian box, and i need to create shell accounts with locking axx to user home directory.. or block access to other users directory..
a way to lock users in their directory. E.g. if I host a domain mydomain.com, I need that the owner of this domain can access (read, write, execute via ssh) only the folder www/mydomain.com and nothing else. The solution does not to be a ultrasecure one.
1] adjusting privileges (e.g. deny execute on dirs for the "others") seems a sure way to make the server unfunctional
2] rbash - when I set shell to rbash for a test user, the user can no longer connect to server through winscp
User Domain %CPU %MEM MySQL Processes mysql 3.30 45.97 0.0 Top Process %CPU 1.0 /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir/ --datadir/var/lib/mysql --usermysql --pid-file/var/lib/mysql/hostname.com.pid --skip-locking Top Process %CPU 0.7 /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir/ --datadir/var/lib/mysql --usermysql --pid-file/var/lib/mysql/hostname.com.pid --skip-locking Top Process %CPU 0.6 /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir/ --datadir/var/lib/mysql --usermysql --pid-file/var/lib/mysql/hostname.com.pid --skip-locking
the values are higher before,
i want to ask what is skip-locking and if i add skip-locking in my.cnf,
will the problem been improved? and will it take any effect or problem?
I'm running apache to serve PHP files on (/home/www/) and thttpd to serve images on (/home/www/images)
thttpd runs on a different IP than apache, apache only listens to its IP.
After doing this, the number of apache processes decreased significantly, however performance has gone down, and apache is starting to crash very frequently (swapping).
Could there be a file-locking issue? Do I have to separate the images folder from the www folder?
I've seen that a similar topic was posted earlier today, but I have more specific question. I'm looking for the e-mail only hosting. Requirements:
* dedicated IP * SMTP + SSL (TLS) * POP3/IMAP + SSL (TLS) * up to 10 e-mail addresses from various domains * forwarders (10 or more) * 1-5 GB storage * 10 GB bandwidth * budget: the less the better, but I'll pay any reasonable amount of money if the service is good. Basically I need to find a provider at which I can keep my e-mail address once and for all. (I need a few e-mails only, a few forwarders, 100 MB storage and 1 GB bandwidth but I stated more so I don't run out on resources)
Is there any significant difference between SSL and TLS or is it all mainly in the proprietary vs open standard?
Is there any good reason why not to use Google Apps for this purpose? I've read that some people are concerned about privacy. Is there any pro that can comment on this (privacy issue) and remain objective?
One last (dumb?) question. What is the purpose of domain locking? Before AuthCodes were introduced I could see the reason for locking domains, but why would anyone want to lock the domain these days? (and yet I see majority still does) I mean, noone can initiate the transfer without providing AuthCode (can he?) and isn't that alone good enough to keep the domain safe? And if someone manages to gain control to the control panel to read AuthCode then he can easily unlock the domain so I see no additional layer of security.
I am using VPS for my general hosting, but have considered putting together a machine for an email server to host some email accounts that I currently don't have on my VPS accounts and would want tighter security than VPS offers (hosting company/support having access to VPS).
While I have gotten more comfortable with linux during the last 5 months I have been hosting on a VPS, I still prefer a control panel type interface. I am using WHM/Cpanel currently. I know that I cannot get a Cpanel license for the type of server I want to put together, so is there either a linux server distribution with a good gui interface, including email setup and admin, or is there a control panel other than cpanel that is either free or inexpensive to use on a dedicated email server.
I will house this email server on my 6mb/768k DSL line at home, or at work on a 4xT1 (6MBs).
I am in the process of getting my new colo setup going. My initial colo is on a per server basis so I don't need a switch right away. I am however going to add a switch so I can have my servers connected privately to a backup server in the same rack. On this backup server, what is the best type of "system/control panel" to use to setup the backup accounts for each of my servers? I could just create accounts manually via the Linux command line, but curious if there is a good way to do this (Webmin maybe?). Of course this server will not be accessible from the internet, it will be on the "private" network and accessible from the other servers.
when I was in vps except cpanel and whm I had another control panel for vps , Don't remember what was that I could turn my server off and on for dedicated server except for cpanel and whm what else do I need?
a good method to have processes controlled in the resources they use, in a shared cpanel environment?
For example, it appears that the cpanel backup (compressed) made the load skyrocket to beyond 60% cpu and 95% memory usage today, and this server is beefy to begin with.
I want some system to kill processes immediately if they exceed X amount of resources or kill processes that spiral out of control (X amount of processes from same user).
My host and I discussed over a month ago the possibility of adding on another server so that I can use one for MySQL and the other for web, and eventually as my sites expand add a third one so that two balance the loads and the one will be dedicated just for MySQL.
Well, it's been a month now and I have had a server dedicated for MySQL and the other one dedicated for web set up. A month has gone by and my host and I are having problems setting it up - I have not been able to use the new server and have already had to pay the bill when I have not been able to use it for its purpose!
The old server was supposed to act as the MySQL while the new server was supposed to be for web. We are having so many problems trying to set this up, well at least my host is, and I am becoming more and more frustrated as the days go on because I am paying for the new server that I can't even use because it's not set up properly.
I am using DirectAdmin control panel and linking them is a pain in the butt. I linked my host to this article, but I don't think he's implementing what is being instructed to do: [url]
The new server is still not working properly with the MySQL server and I have no idea what to do here. I have already paid for a month's service for no reason and now I am starting to feel robbed because this process is taking so long.
I am willing to switch control panels if it will speed up the process. Does anybody know of any control panels that will be better suited for my need? I'd ideally like to simply manage both servers in one control panel - under one license - and manage each server's services and most importantly the MySQL and it's databases on the dedicated server for MySQL.
I installed Centos4.7, now i am installing the ISPCongif2 but at the last step after configuring the ssl, i was asked to enter my host and domain, but it gives me error the url is not reachable.
The domain is not hosted anywhere but i created an entry for it in the /etc/hosts [root@serv ~]# cat /etc/hosts # Do not remove the following line, or various programs # that require network functionality will fail. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost 192.168.112.41 serv.mynewdomain.com serv 192.168.112.41 mynewdomain.com
Do i have to make anychanges on any configuration files?
Here are the steps i did to setup this server:
1- I purchased an ip 64.xx.xxx.xxx from my ISP provider.
2- I installed centos4.7 on my PC.
3- Installed the webmin.
4- On the router i pointed the 64.xx.xxx.xxx to 192.168.112.41 what are the steps please i need to follow to get this server running?
billing system to control the traffic between router and servers. I thing I need a billing system installed on server with webgui like those used by ISPs but I need it working with paypal and other payment gateways.
The other solution is to use radius server but I will need it working with payment gateways. Can you recommend me a good radiuns server with many options?
Whats the best Control Panel for Windows 2003 like cPanel except from thats for Linux but i want a Control Panel for Windows 2003 Web Server. I know their is Plesk & HELM but is their anymore and which is the best one?
We may soon get into the unmanaged arena. Recently there has been debates on whether an unmanaged server should come with anything other than a bare OS, even if ordered with a control panel. I'd like to get a feel for what you as a customer expect from an unmanaged host when ordering a server with control panel.
write a tutorial how to set up a server without a control panel. A step by step guide how to set up the dns, add doamins. create accounts, create ftp users, create databases, create db
I have server with the Plesk control panel on Linux server and want to install ffmpeg but not sure about the steps to install it. Any script or easy steps to install ffmpeg on my server.
