Will Webhosting Maintenance Affect The Rank Of? My Website In Google
Jan 17, 2009
today i got a email form my web hosting:
"Lunarpages Web Hosting is scheduled to undergo maintenance this Saturday, January 17, 2009, at our San Diego location in order to upgrade our internal systems to be more energy efficient in our power usage, a major step in our initiative to Go Green in 2009. Unfortunately, this means that some of our servers will be unavailable for a short time while we upgrade these systems. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Below, you will find information on how to track the progress of our upgrades and the scheduled times that our servers will be undergoing these improvements.
The following times are our three scheduled maintenance windows for this upgrade. Please note that the information is in Pacific Standard Time (PST):
* Saturday, January 17, 7am-10am
* Saturday, January 17, 10am-1pm
* Saturday, January 17, 6pm-9pm
"
will this maintenance affect the rank of my website in google and other search engine?

I'm not ready to fully purchase webhosting at the moment. But, I want to be able to upload all my website scripting and information to a test website for free. All the information will be uploaded via Dreamweaver CS3, so I need a website that will allow me to sign up for free webhosting where I can test out my website.

I know this question has been asked millions of time on this forum, but my situation is somewhat unique. I need some options to where I can host my website at. Here are the requirements:
-10gb to 20gb of space
-Anywhere from 500gb to 700gb of bandwidth with path to upgrade to more if necessary
-LINUX OS
-PHP5/MySQL5 with cpanel(I'm more accustomed with cpanel)
-No preference to it being dedicated, VPS, colocated, etc. but must have options do upgrade later if necessary
-less than $500 per month(is this possible ?)
This will eventually be a gaming website, but the games will be downloaded and run on the clients' machine. There will be a lot of database interactions, so please take that into consideration if necessary. Rackspace was mentioned to me, and seem to come with great reviews on this forum. However, I need more options.

Hi one of our websites had been infected when it was injected with malicious javascript codes. However google picked up on this and marked the website as harmful, its been sitting infected for a few days before we realised.
Now i have removed all the malicious codes and have been waiting for upto a week for google to remove the harmful message from its search engines.
Im guessing i have to wait even longer? Is there anything else i can do to speed up the process?

It's very dangerous to display Google ads on your website! ("adsense"). If they decide they don't like your website, for any reasons, for example political reasons (they told it to me), then instead of displaying their regular ads, and even instead of displaying a blank space instead - they display a frame with big "Action canceled" at the top of your website and your customers might think you went out of business or something like that (they are not displaying any relation to Google). They did it to my and my website, www.speedywhois.com (currently .net), look for yourself, read this post and especially the images attached (MSIE and MZFF) and especially if you're politically active as I am and support human rights and especially in China or Israel or criticize Google or the United States of America then you can find "Action canceled" frames on the top of your website too.
http://www.speedy.net/uri/blog/?p=84
I currently don't have a computer and I'm using public computers to connect to the internet (it costs) and when I noticed this "Action canceled" on the top of my website it was shabbat (weekend) but since this is a top security issue and I didn't want my customers to think I went bankrupt and stop using Speedy Whois, I removed google ads and put a warning to other webmasters too.
By the way I also asked them why they stopped displaying my ads for Speedy Whois on their websites ("adwords"), I wrote them in english and my website is english and my language preferences are english but instead they wrote me something in hebrew about them hating me and my website which I didn't even bother to read. I asked them to reply in english and they refused so I'm not advertising with them either. Godaddy is also not displaying whois data to my customers so they are together (Google & Godaddy) doing their best to cause my customers to stop using my website.
Google also caused me problems with sending mail from my gmail and they are censoring me big time because of my political views. I'm against wars and I wrote some things against war crimes on my website and it made them very angry about me.

I hope some of you are using Google Apps and can help me to find an answer to the following question:
I own two different and independent domain names (e.g. domain1.com and domain2.com).
I'd like to use the Google Apps (Standard, free edition) with them to create two different and totally independent mailboxes (e.g. abc@domain1.com and xyz@domain2.com).
But how many Google accounts I need to do this? Can I manage two (or more) independent and fully functional domains using one Google account?
P.S.
Help section contains descriptions of aliases for multiple domains, which are just pointers or shortcuts, but not a fully functional mailboxes, so this solution isn't something I'm looking for.

Windows normally require far more frequent patching than Linux. There is one issue with VPS. Everytime we do maintenance we need to reboot the server and the VPS are affected. Normally for VPS I thought the best method will be to remote into the VPS first to shut them all down before rebooting the main server.
Issue is sometimes clients want security and do not give us these passwords. If we were to shut down by the main server interface and reboot, won't it harm the VPS? For those doing maintenance, what are your ways of overcoming these?

I know that after you have been running a site for a while you will have some "clutter" after a while. For example, email boxes that are not used might be taking up a lot of space because they are getting spammed.

today i received this email from BurstNET, really i am chocked from what happened.
BurstNET™/NOCSTER™ Network Mailing List Members;
BURSTNET Network Maintenance Update - Saturday, September 20th, 2008
Please be advised that the network maintenance performed on Saturday, September 20th, 2008, starting at 2AM EST was unsuccessful.
Due to an unforeseen equipment issue (an undocumented Cisco™ limitation) that did not appear until after live traffic was flowing, the maintenance was not able to be completed as planned. The maintenance was nearing completion, at which time live traffic was brought online on the new equipment. The live traffic immediately caused multiple/repeat outages, and BustNET™ Network Engineering attempted to diagnose and workaround the issue. BustNET™ Network Engineering found that this was not possible at this time, and the network design would have to be altered accordingly to proceed.
Proper planning, configuration, simulation, and testing had been completed in advance of this maintenance period, however, this was a undocumented Cisco™ IOS limitation that was not found until after live traffic was brought online.
BurstNET™ Management made a decision to revert back to old equipment/configuration, to get our client base back online, until which time this issue can be rectified/resolved on the new equipment.
A new maintenance window will be announced shortly.
We apologize for this inconvenience, and do appreciate your patience and understanding, as we work to upgrade/improve the network for the best future performance.

I got around 5 servers running and added one more last week. Its becoming a pain managing them all. Updating, setting up new policies and restrictions, securing or whatever other tasks that are needs to be executed on ALL these servers.
Wanted to know how you guys are doing it. I know that some hosts use HSPc, HSphere, Helm, etc to manage the entire cluster. But what about the lot who use cPanel?

Dear Valued Limestone Networks Client,
You are receiving this notification because Limestone Networks has scheduled a maintenance window to perform work on several fiber cross connects which provide carrier bandwidth to our facilities. Since this will involve a minor interruption in service we are informing all of our clients of scheduled maintenance as far in advance as possible.
This maintenance window is scheduled for Friday, November 14th, 2008 from 12:00AM to 6:00AM CST. Those clients who will be affected, which is anticipated to be less than 5% of all clients, will experience a brief (5-10 minute) loss of network connectivity to their servers. We do not anticipate power loss to any servers during this maintenance window.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Please feel free to contact us email (sales@limestonenetworks.com) via our ticket system [url] or our live chat system (www.limestonenetworks.com) if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

how do you guys do the maintenance for shared hosting SQL 2000/2005? Do you just let the customers do the maintenance, compacting and optimizing themselves or do you scheduled a task to do that?
Till now I had let my clients do that. But some clients it seemed do not really know much about this. But if we were to compact or optimize all the databases by task scheduling, I am worried that it is something against their privacy.

I have ever made a DNS Server change and I was curious how this is going to affect my e-mail.
Lets say this is my URL - www.testURL.com
I also have my e-mail setup as MyName@testURL.com
I now have a new host so we are going to change the DNS settings so www.testURL.com now points to the new web host. Is this going to affect my e-mail address MyName@testURL.com or do I also have to make a request to get the e-mail changed as well?

I set up my own webserver earlier this year using a dedicated server from my hosting company (IIS, win2003), for some reason two of my websites on there are not being listed by Google (or any search engine) at all. Could there be something wrong in my setup that can cause this to happen?

our company is ordering a new dedicated server and we are a little unsure what we should choose as far as the full hostname and nameservers of this one server.
This server will have a couple different websites on it, but really, there is only one BIG website on it... let's call it abcd.com.
While most would pick a hostname of host.abcd.com for instance, if at all possible, we would like the domain name part of the hostname to be something different than abcd.com. We own a domain name that doesn't point to anything yet (unuseddomain.com) and we were wondering if we could use that domain in our hostname.. host.unuseddomain.com.
And instead of using abcd.com as the domain name for our own nameservers (ie. ns1.abcd.com, ns2.abcd.com), we would like to again, use the unused domain name we own (unuseddomain.com) for the nameservers domain name: ns1.unuseddomain.com, ns2.unuseddomain.com.
So...
Will this work? Is this perfectly acceptable?
And lastly...
Since the one website we really care about on this server (the one we got the server for in the first place) is abcd.com, is using the unuseddomain.com for the hostname and nameservers (as above) a bad choice in anyway regarding email deliverability? I understand that mail ISP's (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) do all kinds of checks on hostnames (PTR), etc... and we want to make sure that we aren't hurting ourselves in anyway by using an "empty" domain name that we own as our hostname's and nameserver's domain name.
For instance, if we send mail from the abcd.com account, it will use mail.abcd.com (1.1.1.1) as it's outgoing mail server... Hotmail will see this... do a reverse-dns lookup on 1.1.1.1 and see host.unuseddomain.com. See what I'm saying? It all will work, but will it toss up red flags?

My question is about search engines especially google. My site will be targeting US visitors and I am in the US. When google and other search engines see that my IP address is in Canada will it have any affect on search engine ranking for the regular us google.com? I don't care much about rankings on google.ca since my visitors will mainly be in the USA. anybody have any insite on this? I also want to mention my domain name will be a .com domain

I have seen 1 vps provider having very poor ping results in few online ping sites and they have a very cluster slow loading pages as well.
One of my friend has a package with them, the ping results are very poor even for him as well. Just made an traceroute found its on some node1.vpsprovider.com
Ya, one more major important similarity noticed was, the vps provider emails weren't set properly to yahoo mail, and my friend's emails sent from the server to yahoo weren't delivered as well.
So if the vps provider has poor content may be due to firewall or internal settings do the systems under the node also be affected?
I have no problems with my host so nothing to be worried about, but need to help him as he is just starting it out with a cheaper vps

I have maindomain.com addon-1.com addon-2.com addon-3.com
The addon domains are folders in main domain's root.
The problem is maindomain's htaccess is affecting the addon domains. I want the add on domains to have their own htaccess. The addon domains should not be influenced by main domain's htaccess
I did some research online and someone says this method works:
Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon_domain.com
RewriteRule .* - [L]
But the above assumes you only have one addon domain. I have multiple.
Which code is correct? This
Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-1.com
RewriteRule .* - [L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-2.com
RewriteRule .* - [L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-3.com
RewriteRule .* - [L]
Or this
Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-1.com
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-2.com
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?addon-3.com
RewriteRule .* - [L]
do I put the code at the beginning of main domain's htaccess?

Just have a question for everyone. Does having a Dedicated IP on your shared service affect your purchase decision?
(i.e., When searching for Shared Web Hosting, do you make it a requirement that you get assigned your own Unique IP or do you not care if you are assigned the Main Box IP.)
