File Integrity Check
I use tripwire for a long time on my FreeBSD servers one thing that's bugging me is that it takes like 20 minutes to check the system with the default config: so I'd like to know: 1) is there currently some other tool that does tripwire job better? 2) anyone has a list of "probably changed files when a server is hacked", or something like that? I mean, I'll be happy if tests can take 2 minutes instead of 20 and I detect intrusion 99% of the times instead of 99,9% so "key files/dirs" would probably be enough instead of checking a lot of dirs with recursion

Transfering My Clients To A New Host But Maintaining Website Function And Integrity
I have 35 clients hosting on my dedicated server. I am going to be ending my service as a host provider, and I need to transfer all of my clients to a new host. Many of my clients sites were written 3-4 years ago in php while global vars was still off, and so many of the sites might not function correctly if I just pop them to a new host. My first solution would be to bypass the php .ini file with a public_html/ based ini that would override any newer server settings. Does anyone know of a good host that could take my clients? And also support the php version locally to the shared account? I need a host that is reliable, and honest. Am I going about this the right way? I am open to any suggestions or advice on this. I should probably add, all of my clients pay on an annual basis from $89-$140. None of my clients run video sites or any heavy media stuff.

No HW Raid - FreeBSD Gmirror (soft-raid1) As Best Practice For Data Integrity?
Dedicated server has 2 HDD but I am not going to pay another $25/month for the hardware RAID solution (already stretched too far). My plan is to install FreeBSD 6 and use Gmirror to establish a raid-1 "soft" mirror. Advantages: Entire drive is mirrored including the OS. Drives can be remotely inserted or removed from the mirror set using a console command so its possible to uncouple the mirror and perform software updates on a single drive then re-establish the mirror only after the updates have proved successful. Disadvantages: Lower I/O than hardware solution (not a problem for me) others??? I rarely see people consider software raid for a tight-budget server and I am wondering why? Could it be that other OS's dont have a solution as good as gmirror? Or is it just that crappy soft-raid in the past has left a bitter taste in admins mouths? Or perhaps admins need the extra I/O of hardware?

Sevices To Monitor With Nagios
I am wondering what services it is best to monitor with Nagios which I've installed on my Centos 5.3 VPS. I wish to monitor and understand all essential services of the VPS itself at this stage but, generally, to make the best possible use of Nagios as an analytical tool as well as basic monitoring notifications, etc. I already have a rough idea based on the main services being run. But I imagine there may be more to this than meets the eye, in particular, in view of any potential performance cost, etc. I am especially keen to obtain as detailed a picture as possible concerning performance related criteria with a mind to indicating possible improvements that could be made.

How To Monitor RAID Setup?
we've got our new machine up and running smoothly. It's a core2duo running CentOS with Plesk 8.3. We have 2 drives in a RAID 1 configuration for reliability sake, and I'm looking for something to help me monitor the status of the disks in the array. Since RAID is pretty useless unless you know if one of the disks has died. Is there some open source utility that will monitor this and email me if something is wrong? Perhaps something with a nice web interface? Even better... is there some addon to plesk that will help with this?

Uptime Monitor Scripts
given the recent paid-switch of host-tracker, i want to monitor some websites myself. I've a fairly reliable dedicated server (2007 : 12 minutes downtime so far checked every minute), so i'd like to monitor from this server some websites shared-hosted elsewhere, (just 1 server is not optimal, but the chance of both being unavailable at the same time should be minimal). I'm wondering if someone could be so kind to suggest me some pre-made scripts /software suitable for my needs, basically i need just something that monitors my website and send me emails when goes down, and when it's back. Uptime calculation would be great, but not mandatory.

Bandwidth Manager/monitor
I will be setting up a LAN at home where there will be a few PCs connected to the network. My idea is that I will have linux box where I will route all the traffic through to monitor it. I was wondering what would be a free solution to go "hardcore" on this. When I mean hardcore, I really mean hardcore. I want stats, packet shaper etc.. It would be a learning process for me too. The only thing is that alot of solutions out there are more enterprise and expensive. Anyone here use or know a good solution? I was told I could use m0nowall on freeBSD. Another thing I was looking at would be Squid. But to be honest I'm not sure. Whats a good free software that can do this? Perhaps something really cheap if there is a cost involved.

How To Monitor My Web Server's Performance
I've recently found (last 6 weeks) that the performance of my client's websites on my trusted host's servers isn't how it used to be and/or how it should be. The download seems to take way much longer than before. So far it hasn't resulted in a significant drop in average pageviews per unique visitor but it might do if things continue. The host claims a number of attacks on the mailserver and an unusually high load at one point in time. Above all it's just annoying - isn't reliable server performance what can be expected from a reputable host? Here's the question: what's the best way of monitoring online how the web and mail servers are performing so that I can take this report to my host and urge them to take (more) action? Ideally I'd like to compare this with a seperate web server that I use for another client. I don't mind spending a little bit of money but high subscription fees are not in my budget.

Simple Network Monitor - PING / TRACEROUTE?
I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any programs out there that can monitor and record ping times to various server IP's and couple output say a simple graph. There used to be this website I used that you could simply go onto there site, and register, and put in your servers ip addresses and it would output a simple graph that showed latency, loss etc for any ip you put into there system and displayed a web based mrtg type graph. I am having some troubles at one of the datacenters that I have some co-located servers at, and would like to show them how much packet loss they are having at a given time, or over say a 24 hour period.
