Multiple Server File Distribution

Sep 21, 2007

We're running multiple cPanel-based Linux boxes now, and are looking for a simple way to distribute our basic system files across all boxes. No important low-level files, just the basic cron job bash scripts we run on all servers etc. This would also be a help for syncing these shared files across to new boxes we bring online.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a simple file distribution system for this purpose? Ideally it would run as a cron job rsyncing the files across.

It may just be easier for us to write our own script for the purpose, but thought I should ask if there was anything off the shelf

Best Distribution For A VM

Aug 22, 2007

I've installed Xen 4 on one of my servers and was wondering which would be the best distribution to use? I will be installing cPanel on this and while I know cPanel works best with CentOS 4.5 32-bit, would there be anything else tht might work better/faster as a VM under Xen? Maybe 64-bit for Hardware Assisted Virtualization?

Experience With Power Distribution

Apr 5, 2008

How would you distribute power to your racks?

What we are panning on doing is piping directly out of the fuse panel down to the raised floor. Inside the floor there will be flexible romex that feeds up into the racks. Once fed into the racks it is then piped into junction boxes which are attached to a piece of unistrut. There will be a ton of outlets so each server has two outlets, one of course being for backup.

Does anyone see anything wrong with this? What about UL 60950-1 standards?

Perpetually Updateable Linux Distribution

Apr 17, 2009

Would anyone have any ideas which Linux distribution can be updated the easiest, as in 2 years later, I can run a command or something that will bring it up to the most recent release without having to be fully reinstalled. I will be working with Xen soon, and I know that is more friendly for that type of thing than something like OpenVZ or Virtuozzo could be. I say this after seeing the 2 releases per year idea that Fedora seems to think is fun, and how much work it has been for people to keep up to date. For hosting, its hard to deal with uprooting every so often and migrating to a new system just to keep up to date. I would love to hear some perspectives on this from anyone experienced in this area.

Coral Content Distribution Network

Jun 25, 2007

I recently read someone's blog post about surviving the front page of Digg on a budget. One tip involved using the Coral Content Distribution Network (AKA Coral Cache). The author provided .htaccess snippets for re-directing your traffic through this service.

Has anyone on these forums had experience using Coral Cache as an emergency availability measure? How did it work? Any drawbacks to report? A search turned up a few threads that mentioned Coral Cache, but none that specifically covered pros and cons.

Static Routes With Linux & Shorewall (site To Site VPN Virtual Private Network)

Mar 29, 2009

Attached is a (badly) drawn diagram of two sites, connected by a vpn.

The site to the left, is network 10.0.0.0/24 which runs a linux server as the router for the network.

The site to the right, is network 10.1.0.0/24 which runs a windows 2003 server as the router for the network.

Now, my problem is, the clients behind the windows 2003 server can ping any machine on the first network because i setup a static route to route all traffic to 10.0.0.0/24 over the vpn interface.

now, my problem is, only the linux server can ping any machine on the windows 2003 network, any client behind the linux server cant seem to route over the interface.

I have the following route on the linux server: .....

Plesk Automation :: Adding Dedicated IP Breaks Site (visitors Land On Default Site)

Apr 14, 2015

Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.

The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.

The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.

Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]

After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.

However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.

If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.

Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.

How To Host A Site On A Server

Jun 5, 2009

I've a site running at my localhost with Apache/Tomcat server, pages are mostly jsp.

I've used Oracle as the database but i'm currently migrating it to MySQL. I've used the

Struts framework. And i'm planning to add AJAX to it in coming days.

So, the whole thing is up and working on my local machine, how do i host it on a server so that its available in the internet?

Which hosting service is required for this kind of website?

How do i choose a hosting service?

And the most important of all, how to deploy and make the code running in the remote server.

I'm planning to go for a shared server for the moment.

Transferring Site To New Server

Jul 8, 2008

I have read another recently created thread about their woes but this is a separate issue so I figured it deserved a separate thread.

Here is my problem.

I am transferring my site, osrec.com from my old server to
Hostgator.

The old server is quite primitive and I am using this piece of crap:

Matrix Hosting Appliance Control Panel v2.0-33

I have hardly any control or options.

I am using Joomla 1.5....but my concern is that the MYSQL database will not be compatible.

I am also concerned about downtime...What if they transfer and it isn't compatible, am I then stuck with a site that won't function properly. Is there a way of transferring it to another domain hosted with Hostgator first?

Has anyone transferred a Joomla site over to Hostgator? have you any advice?

I know, a lot of questions and not really structured. Fact is, I have never experienced this before and so this is my first time facing it.

I'd contact Hostgator, but....ya know...their technical support is useless.

Does My Site Need A VPS Or Dedicated Server

Jun 14, 2008

I own a site that is MySQL driven, shared hosting is no way to go now with over 100 guests on the site, and alot of MySQL usage...

My question is, do we need a dedicated server? or the site would function great with 99% uptime on a VPS?

Another issue is, the site gets DDoS / DoS attacks between now and then, haters out there... so would a VPS be able to stay up against the attacks? can I install CSF with no problems? or any other firewall?

Let me know what you think, and if VPS is the way to go, please suggest some VPS hosting providers...

Big Site Needs Separate Server For Mysql

Apr 8, 2009

my vbulletin site has been growing significantly and the server has crashed many times due to the high loads. My server guys tell me that mysql is hitting loads of 30 (not sure what that means) and i need to get another server for mysql alone.

They recommend that I shld go for raid-5 for the mysql server due to performance and redundancy. Thus if i was to upgrade now, I shld just go straight for a raid-5. Is that true?

Tranferring Site From Virtual Server To VPS

Dec 12, 2008

After having my site on an Win2k3 virtual server for the last 10 years I've finally bitten the bullet and purchased a VPS account.

My site is an old legacy of MS Frontpage, complete with FPSE, Access databases, asp, html pages and lots of images. Total size is just over 4Gb.

I've tried publishing the site using MS ExpressionWeb direct from the virtual server to the VPS, plus I've tried to Publish them from the backup on my PC. Nothing works. I just get error after error after error.

EW starts to publish and maybe will run for 4 hours before throwing up an error saying that it can't find the web server or FPSE aren't installed. They are basically the same old error messages that all of Microsoft's Frontpage and Expression Web software have been throwing up since the day Frontpage was first marketed back in 1998! If they can't solve the problem you'd at least think they could change the error messages.

I've tried uploading them via FTP but without the MS server extensions the child webs aren't created so therefore I just end up with permission problems and nothing works properly-

Best Setup For A Proxy Site And Server

Jul 29, 2008

I plan on purchasing a dedicated server to run a few proxy sites. However, i don't have a lot of Linux skills to administrate my own server. But i've always been able to figure stuff out so i feel pretty confident that i can get it going on my own. Anyways, My original idea was to use cPanel to run the web server for the proxy sites however i feel that using cpanel is not a great idea since i also wanted to maximize my servers performance and i hear cPanel can take heavy resources. So anyways, I just wanted to know what some other people here might think and if possible any recommended guides on setting up a linux webserver would also be appreciated as well.

Site Capacity Of Dedicated Server

Apr 3, 2008

What would be the site hosting capacity of a dedicated server in terms of numbers of small sites.

1000 visitors a day for example.

Perhaps 5 page views a vistor and each site having a VBulletin as a sub-domain.

Would it be best to run them all off one dedicated server or each site just off a small hosting plan?

For organizational purposes it seems the dedicated server would be the way to go?

they crash my dedicated server a few times. I have a dual p4 w/ 2 gb of ram. I only have 60 clients on this server, but as they get more coverage, our server cant take this many hits.

WHM To Point Site To Home Server

May 4, 2007

whats up fellers, i'm attempting to point my design site name from whm, to my home i.p address by changing the i.p in whm dns zone editor. I'm doing this because its just so much easier to copy an ad, or web site or whatever i do to the server via my home network so the client can see the project pretty much in realtime (some ads are like 800mb) . ALSO i'm trying to set up exchange so my motorola q will have realtime email.

Anyway, so "mysite.com -A record -i.p.addy" Now the site comes up.. and i get emails.. but i cant 'send' any emails and windows server is telling me i have a non existing domain name.

so the question is am going way over my head and should i just use a service like no-ip or dyndns or can this be done?

Server Load Is Low But Site Is VERY Slow

Jul 1, 2007

My machine is pretty good. Here are the specs:

Intel Xeon-Woodcrest 5148-DualCore
3 gigs of ram
250GB Western Digital WD Cavia

I run a forum with a modest amount of traffic along with a content management system handling the other sections of the website. I'm pretty sure the forum isn't the problem though.

The server load for this machine is almost never above a 1. Right now as I type this the load is at 0.17, but it's unbearably slow! Taking up to 16 seconds to load a single page.

What could be causing this? I'm a server n00b. Is there a setting I should be doing to one of my servers configuration files to make it run faster?

My website gets 30-40,000 visitors a day and these problems always occur during peak hours. It would be easier to deal with this though if not for the fact that the server load is always so low. How is it possible for the site to get so slow while the server load is always so low?
