Help setting up ftp on remote linux box?

I got a real good deal on a cheapo server, it has no cpanel, default ftp, or any of that stuff.

how to remotely setup an ftp account on that server?

It would be easy if it had cpanel, but i have no idea how to use linux, guess its time to learn a few things.

Setting Up Remote Sql Server

Apr 24, 2008

i am trying to setup a remote sql server , the web server which runs everything but sql is cpanel/WHM and the SQL server is Centos 5. I have installed mysql on the SQL server and it is running.

When i put the information in cpanel for remote sql setup it comes up with an error of :

usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'IP Address' failed error: 'Host 'hostname' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server' mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "mysql has failed").

Is there something i have to enter in the remote sql server to allow the IP address of the cpanel server to be able to connect to the SQL server?.

Linux Setting Up Second Drive

Jun 28, 2007

I'm a little familiar with Linux, but I need help setting up a second drive that is in the server I'm leasing from Layered Technologies. It's a self-managed server so they won't even TELL me how to do it.

I need to format the drive and mount it as /backup so I can setup WHM/Cpanel to use it for backups.

What commands do I need to type to format the drive with the right kind of partition and mount it as /backup?

Linux Remote Console

May 31, 2008

I am upgrading my current colo'd server from a 1U dual core xeon with 2x500GB drives to a 2U core 2 quad with 8x750GB drives (raid5).So far I have ran into two issues. One is the rails are too large for the cabinets (problem #1 which I put in another thread). The only other problem is I am having problems with remote console on the new hardware.

It should be setup correctly since I basically rsync'd everything from the old server to the new one. The device is detected:

root@houkouonchi: 03:19 AM :~# dmesg | grep -i tty
Command line: root=/dev/sda2 gpt pci=nomsi console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600 notsc
Kernel command line: root=/dev/sda2 gpt pci=nomsi console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600 notsc
console [tty0] enabled
console [ttyS0] enabled
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
00:05: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

But when I connect to the digi I am not getting any console output. I have tried a different serial -> Ethernet adapter and tried a different patch cable/port on the digi so I am pretty sure those are fine. The motherboard (nforce 650i chipset) didn't have an onboard serial port so I am using a port hooked up to a bracket which has a ribbon cable which connects to the motherboards COM port. I also tested another serial connector which the case has built in and both give me problems.

Maybe the motherboard is just busted?

Linux: Remote Administration

Jan 7, 2007

I'm thinking about putting a server in a colo where the Datacenter is a 4 hour drive.

My question is: "Do Linux machines running LAMP hang / freeze often so that you cannot force a reboot remotely ?" - "Does it even happen on Linux boxes?"

I have a lot of experience with Windows machines but none with Linux. With a Windows machine I for sure would have to purchase a DRAC/LILO board.

Unfortunately, I don't have any production experience with Linux so I don't know the risk of having to go on site because Linux decided to completely freeze making remote management impossible. Of course this is not included any hardware outages.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Setting Up SSL On CentOS With SNI

Jan 31, 2015

I've searched the web to set up ssl on 1 domain of 2 installed op 1 ip address. It seems easy: setup virtual hosts, turn ssl on and point to your certificates.

I'm completely lost. I setup the certificate from geotrust in plesk panel 11.5 as described in the manual but that didn't work, apparently because i have 2 domains and 1 ip.

So i started looking to adapt my vhost settings to use sni. First problem: i can't find the setting of the virtual host.

Secondly where can i find the path to the .key and .crt files.

How i can install a ssl certificate on one of the two domains sharing 1 ip.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Setting Up Master And Secondary DNS Servers

Jun 30, 2013

I have two VPS with two different Datacenters. I am running my website on one of the VPS which has Plesk Panel 11.5 installed on it. Since my second server is not in use, I would like to use it as a Secondary DNS Server for redundancy. I know this can be done with Plesk Expand. But, I am not in a position to invest further as I just run 4 domains on my main server. I was looking at installing some free control panel on my secondary VPS and set it up as a Secondary DNS Server if possible. But, I could not find any Guides on setting this up.

How I can do this? I see that we have an option in Plesk - 'Switch DNS Service mode' which can be used to either setup my first server as a Secondary or Primary. I have installed Webmin/Virtualmin on the second server, but how to set this up perfectly. I can reinstall the 2nd Server if required, but not my first one with Plesk.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Fail2ban Setting Findtime Per Jail

Jul 14, 2014

In Fail2ban (great idea to include it in plesk!) settings you can set "Time interval for detection of subsequent attacks" (findtime) in general. But it would be interesting this setting per Jail.

You could have 2 jail with same filter but different findtime. Example:

Jail 1) 5 failures in 600 seconds: 1800 seconds ban
Jail 2) 30 failures in 86400 seconds: 604800 seconds ban

There are bots that detect if you have some protection fail2ban or similar and it will adapt, login attempt every 300 seconds for example. Jail 1 no detect this attack, but Jail 2 yes.

See the example, live time :
[root@--------- log]# cat /var/log/maillog | grep 'warning: ---------'
Jul 14 07:10:54 --------- postfix/smtpd[5482]: warning: ---------[--.--.--.---]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed: authentication failure

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Setting Up Mail With Hostname Hosted On A Different Server

May 14, 2015

I have a server that I use to host my primary domain, and I have a cople Plesk servers, now I updated the hostnames of all the servers like

Code: s1.de.myserverplace.de

Now when the plesk server sends a mail it goes in spam always,

In the SPF records of the primary domain sits this

Code:
myserverplace.de. IN TXT "v=spf1 a mx a:myserverplace.de a:s1.de.myserverplace.de ip4:148.251.100.157 ip4:144.76.163.46 ip6:2a01:4f8:201:81b8::60 ?all"

But when I actually send the mail in the headers of the received mail I get this.

Code:
Received: from s1.de.myserverplace.de (s1.de.myserverplace.de. [144.76.163.46])

for <mymailtestacount@gmail.com>
(version=TLSv1.2 cipher=ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 bits=128/128);

[Code] ....

How would I set this up so this doesn't happen?
