Mapping An External Domain To A Subdomain?
I have a website where users can sign up and create a site. They can access their website by typing username.example.com.
However, I would like to add to this the ability to buy a domain name and point it to username.example.com
so example.com/guestbook.html would translate to username.example.com/guestbook.html (external domain and associated user are mapped in the database)
Do I need my own DNS server for this or is there a simpler solution? Also, how should the database lookup be performed for this to work?

Domain Mapping ..
I have a new domain for an online store which I am trying to map to a certain web server(launchsplash_com) for just their Launch Page to show up as homepage when my website is accessed (the ecommerce software has its own default homepage, which I prefer not to show up). The registrar for the domain is Godaddy but hosting is done with a different company - Server Intellect. The issue is mapping my domain to Launchsplash's server does not seem to work. And I am not sure if I am doing the right settings through the host control panel. As per LaunchSplash company's instruction - I create a CNAME record name - www_mydomainname_com and CNAME record data - mydomainname_LaunchSplash_com Since the domain is not being hosted with Godaddy, the total dns control for making dns changes is disabled in godaddy control panel. I do not wish to do the forwarding option, since that shows up the forwarded domain name.

Domain Mapping Clarification
i currently have a site on a .co.uk domain. my client would like the "main" domain to be .com instead. I should add that BOTH .com and .co.uk will be used. The company is advertising itself as thesite.com, so people will associate the business with www.thesite.com, not .co.uk. I have both domains, and I understand domain mapping is used for this purpose, but before I go and screw up anything, could someone please clarify. Is it possible to "domain map" so that visitors go to www.thesite.com, they will see the website as .com, but the site itself will actually be on the ".co.uk" server. I don't particuarly want to transfer the site from the .co.uk to the .com and set up a redirect. I know I could use a redirect .com to .co.uk, but the client specifically wants ".com" to be the site visitors view. (they bought .co.uk and set the site up first, just to be annoying)

Is Domain Mapping Good Or Bad?
If you want to use several domains for your single website, from SEO-reasons or from any other reasons (which?) is it better to forward your domain to that sub-domain or should it be mapped in the DNS in CNAME? mydomain.com mydomain.com/nameoftheotherdomain = nameoftheotherdomain.com It's not the same issue like with Google Apps, whether you should use your own domain, e.g. sites.yourdomain.com or whether you should use the domain offered by Google for your Sites. The reason is that theotherdomain.com is a part of the single website called yourdomain.com, thus, it is not an external website hosted somewhere else.

Can I have a primary domain - www.sample.com - point to another primary domain - www.sample.asn.au - but then have the entry point for that domain be a subdomain - www.ccc.example.com? If the primary domain is parked somewhere else, doesn't it mean that all the subdomains will be too? Or do I use a 301 on the primary domain to the .asn.au site? But does that then redirect all the subdomains too?

Parking A Domain Under A Subdomain
I have 2 domains ie. red.com blue.com. They are both on seperate servers. I want red.com to be a subdomain for blue.com. I went ahead and created an A host for red.blue.com, I then created a virtualhost and everything is working, I can pull up red.blue.com and it pulls up the same data if I were to go to red.com. Here is my issue. I want to have red.com pull up red.blue.com by default so blue.com gets credit for traffic, I am moving red.com and moving it all into blue.com. Hopefully this makes sense. Also, I want to make sure nothing breaks my current search engine results.

Subdomain To Main Domain Moving
I have a domain name as per my sig. I am also creating a subdomain totally in contrast with that site below. My primary domain has one page on it so i would like to: a) delete the one page on my primary domain b) Make the contents of my subdomain my primary domain. e.g my domain is www.info-peep.com, my sub will be example.info-peep.com........i would like to make example.info-peep.com : www.info-peep.com......that make sense, as really the sub will be my main site. Basically wanting to transfer the contents of my sub to my primary. So when people click info-peep.com, it will be the sub's site. Another thing to note is that i am using RVsitebuilder (WYSIWYG) that my web host provides. Also BEAR IN MIND the WYSIWYG editor does not allow me to move pages (sucks) or to copy the page contents.

Htaccess - Moving Site From Subdomain To New Domain
I have what I think is kind of a unique situation with a site move and Google is not turning up an answer that seems to work. My site is currently in this format: www.mydomain.com/site/file.html And I am "moving" it but also switching from html to php, so the same file would be found at: site.mydomain.com/file.php I want to redirect users going to the old pages to their equivalent on the new site, however this is a little bit of a problem because this is a normal subdomain - it is the same directory as before but now there are php versions of the html files. Right now I have all of the http files redirecting to their php equivilents, but I don't believe this is a desirable solution. Also it creates a problem when people go to www.mydomain.com/site (not indicating a specific file; just the subdir root) because I have www.mydomain.com/site/index.html redirecting to www.mydomain.com/site/index.php. Quite a mess. My first option is to put the redirects in the htaccess file on the "old" site. But is this a problem because there are over 500 pages on the site? Does it create a heavy server load because any requests force the server to serve a huge htaccess file? The next alternative seems the most preferable although I'm not sure how to do it. It seems it could use wildcards so that anyone going to *.html gets directed to *.php or something like that. The only problem is that there are a small number of files that were removed completely and do not have php equivilants (about 5 or 6) and would need to redirect to the index.php in the root

For example: Account2 on their server can be accessed through: [url] [url] Host says: "Because everything is Name-based, apache decides what directory is going to be used based upon the name that is provided. However, because the username is valid, it treats it as a vaild URL and redirects it to your site. There is no security issue, as this is just the way apache’s configuration works." I'm not that good at IPTables so bare with me. I think I got the rules correct though but it doesn't work Here is what I am trying to do. I have a server at let's say 111.222.11.10(I will call this server A) and another at 111.222.11.20(I will call this server B). These servers are in same datacenter. What I am trying to do here is when a user accesses port 2000 on server A, I want server A to forward/proxy the port to 2000 at Server B. I have tried the following so far. I was wondering if it is possible to host subdomains on different VPS's? I am an IT manager at a small company. Currently we host an ASP.net based web application (on an IIS server) that we do most of our business on. It was grown in house and uses our MS SQL server. We are looking at expanding this application within the next few months, and I need it to be "bulletproof", as in almost zero downtime. The website also references and pulls up scanned documents that we have on a NAS server. Currently it is around 300 gig worth of documents, but expanding around 200 gig a year. Ultimately, I would like this to be hosted someplace where there is a constant backup of the SQL and website. And someplace I don't have to worry about the hardware, because I am a one man operation and don't have all the needed experience to deal with the web application. would it be beneficial for me to host the scanned documents onsite, and have a hosted solution reference them back at our HQ? I could put them in a DMZ or something like that.

External Processing
I have a hosting provider who cannot provide enough ram to run my one time PHP script (gallery2) (and has a automatic background program kill my task) So I would like to use processing and ram outside of that server.. via one of my other web servers.. (Dual 1 Ghz, 1 gb of ram) the thing is that the servers got plenty of power but not as much space.. So the ideal solution.. would be to utilize it's power while having it access the hard drive/data remotely and processing it remotely... using the internet/ssh to do this.. Does anyone first off know that this is possible? 2ndly what would be some of the commands?

have a few different list of links in my link section for eg one page i give people links to about 20 or so games company where they can buy from. another has a small list of forums people can join eg, another list of places that i shop at.i do not have any reciprocal links with any of them and only included them cos i thought it would be handy for my readers. now can i leave the links or should i take it all off because all these external links would not help in my pr? there seems to be so many conflicting opinions how many external links can you have in a page before it's bad for you. idea to just use robots.txt on all these pages to be on the safe side?

External Pop Email
One of my customer using google apps for his domain. He also fetch external emails using google mail solution. Problem is all of his email accounts email fetched but his ISP email give error. I check and found if he didn't use that ISP, Outlook also not check email and give error. Only he can check email when he logon on net with that ISP. on webmail he can check using ISP site. Any other webmail services provider like mail2web.com not able to check emails. Can any one recommend how I can bypass their ISP restriction security.

Traffic From External Subnets
I've got a few colocated servers hooked up to a 3COM switch. When I looked at the MRTG for the ports, I noticed that all the ports had a similar inbound traffic graphing. Thinking that something was amiss, I sniffed the port and found that I was seeing a lot of traffic from different subnets (could even see pop3 passwords!). Now, I contacted the IDC and they said that this was normal, and that that was how their network was configured (I did tell them that other IDCs didn't have this issue). I think something's not right somewhere. And assuming that the IDC won't fix this issue, I don't want to have constant 1Mbps of inbound traffic that I don't even use.

Starting Up OS From External Drive...
A few months ago i was playing around with ubuntu server and desktop version , i installed it on my external drive. The external harddrive is Seagate 320 GB , connected via USB 2.0 I tried this about 20 times , every time i could not get it to boot to the harddrive. It would just not show up , i changed the bios settings and everything. It never worked , so i gave up. Now i want to try again , is there a program i can use to test if my external drive is boot able? I was thinking it was my motherboard causing the problem, but i did set it to boot via USB , i tried every boot device.
