Is Domain Mapping Good Or Bad?
Apr 9, 2009
If you want to use several domains for your single website, from SEO-reasons or from any other reasons (which?) is it better to forward your domain to that sub-domain or should it be mapped in the DNS in CNAME?
mydomain.com
mydomain.com/nameoftheotherdomain = nameoftheotherdomain.com
It's not the same issue like with Google Apps, whether you should use your own domain, e.g. sites.yourdomain.com or whether you should use the domain offered by Google for your Sites. The reason is that theotherdomain.com is a part of the single website called yourdomain.com, thus, it is not an external website hosted somewhere else.

I have a new domain for an online store which I am trying to map to a certain web server(launchsplash_com) for just their Launch Page to show up as homepage when my website is accessed (the ecommerce software has its own default homepage, which I prefer not to show up). The registrar for the domain is Godaddy but hosting is done with a different company - Server Intellect.
The issue is mapping my domain to Launchsplash's server does not seem to work. And I am not sure if I am doing the right settings through the host control panel. As per LaunchSplash company's instruction - I create a CNAME record name - www_mydomainname_com and CNAME record data - mydomainname_LaunchSplash_com
Since the domain is not being hosted with Godaddy, the total dns control for making dns changes is disabled in godaddy control panel.
I do not wish to do the forwarding option, since that shows up the forwarded domain name.

i currently have a site on a .co.uk domain. my client would like the "main" domain to be .com instead. I should add that BOTH .com and .co.uk will be used.
The company is advertising itself as thesite.com, so people will associate the business with www.thesite.com, not .co.uk.
I have both domains, and I understand domain mapping is used for this purpose, but before I go and screw up anything, could someone please clarify.
Is it possible to "domain map" so that visitors go to www.thesite.com, they will see the website as .com, but the site itself will actually be on the ".co.uk" server.
I don't particuarly want to transfer the site from the .co.uk to the .com and set up a redirect.
I know I could use a redirect .com to .co.uk, but the client specifically wants ".com" to be the site visitors view. (they bought .co.uk and set the site up first, just to be annoying)

I have a website where users can sign up and create a site. They can access their website by typing username.example.com.
However, I would like to add to this the ability to buy a domain name and point it to username.example.com
so example.com/guestbook.html would translate to username.example.com/guestbook.html (external domain and associated user are mapped in the database)
Do I need my own DNS server for this or is there a simpler solution? Also, how should the database lookup be performed for this to work?

I used to have a server which had domain mapping via wordpress... a friend of mine had this up for me and every time I added a new website to the same server/ip-address, I just modified the .htaccess for example:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} domain.com
RewriteCond $1 !^domain
RewriteRule (.*) /domain/$1 [L]
Anyway, I no longer have this server and as a result, I have websites that are not being mapped correctly, many domains point to the same ip address.
I have tried to use name-based virtual hosts but it seems as if this is being ignored... I did restart Apache by sudo service apache2 restart
I'd really like to get my websites working again without buying multiple ip-addresses.

There is too many web hostings from the google search and i don't know which one is good.
My situation is i have a web page that is my portfolio. It is made by flash and php. Moreover, there is a blog too.(WordPress - php) Everything is ready but i am considering the web-hosting.
What i need is support php and mysql. If possible, i would like it support ASP.net too. (i think it is not too possible for both of them) And i don't really need huge web space...i think 1G is enough and the traffic will not too much too as it is private website.
My budge is limited and not too much for a month. I plan to spend less than US$10 per month to get a web-hosting. Also with a domain name too.

I found good domain available names and when I tried to register using some webhosting companies they were first shown as available and in the next step of registration they were claimed to be taken. It does not happen with "not so good" names.
I think it happened with whois.net and register.com
So it looks like there is no way to register a good name?
Even when checking whois may have your good domain name stolen.
Can someone comment this and share his/her experience.
Which regetar and whois companies can I use safely?

I find that I like using CPanel with addon domains in a new unlimited domains shared plan rather than using WHM with each name having its own CPanel in a reseller plan (which I have been used to until now at another host). The only problem is that all the addon domains are out of order - they are not even in the order in which I add them. This puts a damper on things and makes managing them much less efficient than one would expect with the addons in order.
After putting in a support ticket, I was told they can't do anything about it at all. They told me the order of the listing is the order in the "mail server apache configuration."
After posting this matter here in the Apache forum, I have been informed by an SP member that the answer I got wouldn't hold any water at all, or more accurately, consists of a whole lot of smoke. As a person who knows how easy and basic it is to sort data lists or drop-down form selector fields myself, I must admit that it's hard to believe nothing can be done in the 21st century.
I have no desire at all to go with another reseller plan, and like using CPanel instead with addons.
Does anyone know of the good and well known unlimited domain hosting providers who keep the addon domains in order within CPanel? Is there any other good option for shared hosting that doesn't involve using WHM and does offer common sense multiple domain management where everything is in order?

I was wondering if it is possible to host subdomains on different VPS's? Here is what I am trying to do
PrimaryDomain.com -> Hosted on VPS0
|
- Subdomain1.primaryhost.com -> Hosted on VPS1
|
- Subdomain2.primaryhost.com -> Hosted on VPS2
VPS0, VPS1, VPS2 have different IP addresses.
I tried using A records to point subdomains to different VPS but VPS requires a "primary domain" looks like. Do let me know if this is possible. I tried google but not sure what exactly I shoudl be searching for.

I'm not even sure I'm asking this in the right place, but here we go.
We are working on creating some load tests for our system and we need to figure out how a "normal" user navigates our system.
Is there software out there that will show use how a user navigates our system via reading the apache logs? Will awstats do the trick?

I'm not that good at IPTables so bare with me. I think I got the rules correct though but it doesn't work Here is what I am trying to do.
I have a server at let's say 111.222.11.10(I will call this server A) and another at 111.222.11.20(I will call this server B).
These servers are in same datacenter.
What I am trying to do here is when a user accesses port 2000 on server A, I want server A to forward/proxy the port to 2000 at Server B. I have tried the following so far.
Non of them worked.
iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 2000 -j DNAT --to 111.222.11.20:2000
iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp -d 111.222.11.20 --dport 2000 -j ACCEPT
[root@n1-cluster ~]# iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 2000 -j DNAT --to 111.222.10.20:2000
[root@n1-cluster ~]# iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p udp --dport 2000 -i eth0 -j DNAT --to 111.222.10.20:2000
iptables -A FORWARD -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 2000 -j ACCEPT
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 2000 -j DNAT --to-destination 111.222.10.20:2000
Yes, I have done service iptables save and start.
Also iptables -F
Any ideas on what may be wrong?

Currently my companies global website “domain.com” is hosted in a shared hosted environment, our own U.S. website “us.domain.com” is hosted at our datacenter.
Here is my question, we have a redesign project. My goal is to lose the “us.domain.com” sub-domain and move our new U.S. site under the "domain.com" domain using a “/us/” folder delineation.
Is it possible with modern web server technology to setup a something like virtual directory/folder, redirect, alias or remote mapping of the “/us/” folder that points to a separate server hosting our U.S. site outside of shared hosting environment for our "domain.com" site, e.g.?
• Domain.com/<global website content/structure > - Hosted at in a shared environment on Web App Server running Coldfusion
• Domain.com/us/<U.S. website content/structure> - Hosted at our datacenter on Web App Server running IBM WebSphere
Unfortunately I cannot merge the two sites together based on the web server technology and lack of budget/resources to accomplish.

any idea if this is possible? basically what i'd like to do is make a "virtual folder" in my linux box that is actually a connection to an ftp account on another server.
so for e.g. if i say cd /myftp it'll show the contents of that directory as though it was a standard folder, however it is actually connecting to some other machine via ftp?

I have a virtual rack what i connected all my servers upto, Then I mapped all my servers hard drives together so they can all communicate and share data from each other.
But I have apache installed on 1 server hard drive C:/
Can I run apache from that mapped hard drive on the other servers ? Or would that cause problems ?
Also they are all windows 2008 running the latest apache from here.

I need a shared host account that can support wildcard mapping of all HTTP requests through the ASP.NET engine. This is required in order to fully support the UrlRewriting techniques I want to use. Anyone know of any affordable hosts that can support this? Of course, as my site grows I'll consider upgrading to a VPS (and further depending on the growth).

I'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.
( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)
Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:
-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.
- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.
- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:
- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.
I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.
ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".
I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.
My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.

I have dedicated servers - which are overkill as I only host 10 sites (small). I am now looking to move to a VPS solution and would like to know if anyone can recommend a good UK company (that offers true UK hosting) with good uptime and support?
Cpanel and Unix VPS, but may also require windows vps - so a company that offers both will be beneficial, but long term view to migrate over to Linux

I am considering the following VPS:
40 GB Disk Space
Fairshare of a Dual Xeon/Opteron CPU
512 MB Dedicated RAM
2 GB Burstable RAM
750 GB Premium Transfer
Fully Managed
I have about 10 sites that run straight HTML and 5 WordPress low traffic sites (which obviously use a database). Will the server above support my needs adequately?

We have a lot of unused domains that we'd like to setup domain parking for.
To keep it simple, we'd like to just change the namesevers to ns1.domainparking.com and ns2.domainparking.com (not real nameservers!) and the domains would then automatically show a simple web page.
We use cpanel servers and are wondering how easy this is to do? I've seem mention of wildcard dns? Is that the answer?
