May 1, 2008What are the advantages and disadvantages of having dedicated servers from each of these two?
I understand that LW's advantage should be that they are managed, and SL's that they are somewhat cheaper.
But what else is there that differs these two?

Oct 29, 2008I know there are a few threads that are somewhat similar, so I apologize from that aspect, but since I am still not sure of the best option, I thought I would post my exact requirements and hopefully get some good advice.
We need a Windowss dedicated server, probably in the 8 core/8gig RAM variety for a rather intensive Asp.net/MS SQL site. It is a corporate site that is expected to see heavy usage with fairly heavy DB/reportng related web pages.
The majority of people accessing the site will be connecting from Europe.
We will have little, if any, need for management support of Windows or IIS, we are primarily looking for reliable hardware, with quick hardware repair when failures come, and in a redundant DC to avoid downtime (hardware or internet pipe).
The price difference between rackspace and the others does not concern us, so price while a consideration, is towards the bottom of our list of priorities.
As our users are in Europe, a European DC would probably be ideal, but that is one question I have. How much difference will performance/latency be with an American DC vs. European DC for our European users.
English speaking (native language, preferably) support is a must.
A High powered machine (minimum would be 8 cores x 2ghz + 8 gig ram) is a must (possibly two servers -- possibly a router based load balancing of the two servers).
Fast, reliable/redundant internet pipe. We need a DC that will not be unreliable, wether it is from internet outages due to lack of redundancy, or speed fluctuations due to overselling the bandwidth.
So, basically, I have two main questions, I suppose.
First, since the majority of my users will be in Europe, should I only consider a European DC? How much difference will my European users see/feel if we are in a US DC? What difference does it make if the DC is on the East cost, then say Texas?
Second, with price not being a primary consideration, and needing little or no managed support (besides hardware support), just high power machines in a HIGHLY reliable DC, which are the best companies to go with?
Mosso, Too Good To Be True
Jan 3, 2009I have been running my sites on dedicated servers from The Planet for 4 years now. I go through about 500,000 page views per day with a fairly intensive web app (1000+ queries/s). Mosso keeps coming up and it is really interesting me. The promised peace of mind would be a relief and I often have trouble with site lag during peak times even with fairly high end servers. I am wondering if Mosso could work for me or if it is just too good to be true.
I searched the forums, but most of what I found was from 2006 when it first came out, wondering if I can get any info from people who have had experience or heard things more recently. I am really interested about loading times. I read from a lot of people that they experienced slow load times for pages (again these posts were at least a year old), but I viewed some sites hosted on Mosso and they seemed quite fast to me.
FutureHosting Too Good To Be True
Oct 14, 2008Just signed up for a new FutureHosting VPS last night. Their pricing is very good, and the reviews generally kind to them on WHT.
I paid for the $44.99 account with 30 domain Plesk. They have a 35% discount on at the moment that made the package very tempting. Guarantees 768mb RAM, 30gb disk space etc.
Account activated several hours ago.
Took me 1-2 minutes to establish an SSH connection and authorization.
Trying to login to Plesk control panel for the first time has taken 6-7 minutes and it's still loading as I write this.
Load average: 2.01, 1.51, 0.82
Mem: 786432k total, 91000k used, 695432k free, 0k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached
Note all I'm doing is running top and trying to access Plesk.
This doesn't look too impressive to say the least.
I know this happens from time to time with most VPS solutions. I've probably been unlucky that I've hit a spike in server load at the precise moment I tried to use the account for the first time.
But anyone have any experiences with FutureHosting that suggest this could be an ongoing problem?

Apr 3, 2008looks to me like they've stopped renewing domains; everything for me is intact but shortly after the renewal date the domain name doesn't work and the email addresses that come with the service don't work. i had 5 different emails for support for them, none of them work; ditto for any support phone numbers. Too bad, had 2 years of no problems.
i've contested the last payment made through paypal, don't expect that will do much good. don't really care, except it's a nuisance and some $ to move on. i also have a personal web site with them and that's working fine, probably will die when the year is up. i'm looking through the other services to find a safe inexpensive one.
VPS Versus True Dedicated

Failover Or True Clustering
Oct 23, 2007I have been searching and searching for a solution. We are currently using one single vps to host some of our clients. We are finding more and more that we need to have some redundancy.
I have looked at using DNS failover using RSYNC/mysql replication etc with two servers, but just dont like the idea.
I have also looked at hosts like imountain etc that use h-sphere. I dont like this setup because services are split onto single machines. For example mail is done on one single server, therefor if that server is down, mail is down.
What I am looking for:
I am trying to stay in a budget of 150/month or less.
I would like to get one of the two options here:
option 1: two vps's or dedi's that technically act as one(a true cluster) then on top of that is OS and control panel and done. This solution doesnt allow for whole datacenter outages, or network issues.
option 2: Two geographically placed vps or dedi's that are somehow either load balanced, or failover.
Ultimately our goal is to have high uptime, but we dont really have much server load.
Basically failover is ok as loads are always low anyway, but if we are paying big $$ it would be nice to have it load balanced.
Please let me know if my expectations are way to high or my price is way too low. I need to find a solution here somehow and if I cant find anything will most likely just go with DNS failover.

Windows Hosting With 'aspcompat=true'

One of my developers has installed the website and back-end on a Webfusion shared windows hosting account, the site runs okay but there is an admin section that isn't working at the moment as the script uses something called 'aspcompat'.

My understanding of this setup is that I have 512 or more ips that I am using and that I have multiple routes in from the internet from at least 2 providers. Right now where I am coloing at I just have servers and no routers (only the ones that are provided by the co-location). In order to setup a true multi-home for my org will I need to have my own routers/switches and such to accomplish this?

Webhost That Charges Monthly And Accept "true" Paypal
Jan 14, 2009Why is this so hard to find? I've been searching for hours. I want a ASP-enabled host that do not charge me yearly, but monthly or quarterly, within acceptable price range. Basic features, really. ASP + MySQL.
The trubbles comes when i try to check out. Godaddy for instance. Trying to finish my order, but they still want my creditcard information (dont use visa, master or amex).
EasyCGI was very close. They accept true paypal-payment, but only on a yearly basis.
Do anyone know why this is so hard for them? And/or do you know any host that fit the requirements?

Mar 12, 2008My clients in LA - those on AT&T and Time Warner in paticular - are having bad download speeds from my server with Softlayer. Anyone else having similar trouble? Clients who normally get 500-700kb/s down are getting < 50 kb/s down, even early in the morning when the total traffic on my 100mbps port is under 1.5mbps.
Basically, east coast is fine, and anyone with a T1 in LA is fine as well - it's just DSL and Cable modems in LA that are screwed up. In fact, one of our are clients is using Apple Remote Desktop to connect to a remote client with a T1; it's faster to through Time Warner, then VPN to Verizon, and then connect Softlayer and back again than to go directly from Time Warner to Softlayer, which is really weird.

I did a search of WHT but could not find much about WebNX. I also went to their site (but not much info is published there like SLAs, support fee etc etc...
However, the custom quite they sent me sounds quite reasonable compared to softlayer.
Anyone who can share experience of hosting with webnx? or has more info webnx.com and can share their views will be nice.

Nov 13, 2008For those who are still under the softlayer hacker abuse please note you will need to re-load your server. We got hit a 2nd time after thinking everything was clean. Anyhow, for those who got hit again, my team and another from WHT - forgot who made the original clean.php script...
anyhow, here is a tool to clean all the data for all of your users:Copy fixit.pl and clean4.php to a directory. IE: /home/yourusername
Change username "changeme" in fixit.pl to the username where clean4.php is located
execute fixit.pl: IE: perl fixit.pl. If you want to test this on one user uncomment the die statement. When you are ready to do the entire server comment the die statement.

Mar 24, 2009We have being Softlayer for few month now since around 09/04/2008.
We got the server at first for high bandwith client until he could get is server upgrade completed as he colo's is server elsewhere need a temp solution we no longer host is site but still kept server for other clients after all SL did for us we would never think of leaving.
We deployed site and then we ran into problems server seemed become unresponsive after a few hours.
We explained this to SL and did chasis swap and got us back online but problem remained and did not charge for os reload or chasis and even upgrade connection to make sure we not bottlenecks stoping from serving content.
After they started looking apache and using information for original server config had at other datacenter and found solutions that solved issues.
Billing dept and support dept as being of great assistance when needed them.
Overall we very pleased with SL and would not look elsewhere for quality provider and pricing for what we are getting is very reasonable.
