Decide Between VPS, Dedicated Server Or Cloud

Oct 28, 2009

we are about to launch the public version of our website, and we are having trouble deciding which type of server to start with. We've reading a lot and contacting all providers to get a quote, but we haven't been able to take a decision. Maybe somebody with more experience can help us...

- most of our users are going to be (for the time being) in Spain. We plan to move to other markets in the future, but not before one year.

- we understand that the server location (or it's IP address) is important in terms of SEO, that's why we've been looking into spanish providers or providers that offer spanish IPs. This SEO thing is the main reason we have ignored Amazon ec2, which, on the paper, seems to be a very good option for websites that expect to increase their traffic rapidly.

- we are going to start with very few users, but we expect to be in >5000 users/day very soon. Hopefully, we will keep a steady growth for the next months, but this is something we can't anticipate for sure.

- our website is based on PHP&MySQL. Each user consumes quite a lot of memory, and queries to the database are very frequent and quite heavy in processing. On the local version (iMac - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 2GB RAM), a typical query from a single user takes around 2 seconds. We still have to do some optimization, but there is not much room for it left...

- our budget is 150-200 Euro/Month, but we would be able to increase it in case we find out it is needed in order to have a decent website.

- we are no experts in Linux sys-admin, but we can do the basic stuff, such as installing, configuring Apache, etc.

Therefore, we need 'something' that is powerfull enough to satisfy our users and that is easily&transparently scalable in case we have a sudden increase of users. From our readings on this forum and others, we understand that VPSs are not powerfull enough for us. On the other hand, dedicated servers are not easy to adapt to an increase in the number of users. Finally, in Spain we have found that Arsys is offering what they call 'cloud server', which looks similar to Amazon's ec2. We haven't been able to find any objective review on this Arsys offering, so we don't know how good it is. Anyone has worked with this system?

Can't Decide On A Xen VPS Provider

Jul 21, 2008

I'm currently split between vpslink, slidehost, wowvps, swvps, tektonic, linode

My requirements are
1) Must be Xen based. No Virtuozzo or OpenVZ.
2) Min 512MB
3) Budget: USD 30-40/mth
4) Unmanaged is fine as long as I have a control panel (Cpanel, Lxadmin are ok)

Tektonic meets all of the above except 1.
Linode, Slidehost meets all of the above except 4.

So i'm left with with vpslink, wowvps or swvps.

Which one should I choose? I'm leaning towards VPSlink.

Is there any other good Xen-based VPS providers that i should be considering?

RAID Or Not To RAID: Trying To Decide On A New Server

Jul 11, 2008

I've been talking to the Planet about trading in my four and a half year old "SuperCeleron" (from the old ServerMatrix days) Celeron 2.4 GHz system for something new. As part of their current promotions, I've configured a system that looks decent:

Xeon 3040, 1 gig of RAM, 2x250GB hard disks, RHEL 5, cPanel+Fantastico, and 10 ips for $162.

Not too bad. I could bump up the ram to 2 gb for, I think, $12 more, which I'm thinking about and wouldn't mind some thoughts on. But, the thing that has me really confused is RAID. I like the idea of doing a RAID 1 setup with those two hard disks. But, the Planet wants $40/month for a RAID controller to do it. I really don't want to go over $200 a month!

Any thoughts on alternative redundancy strategies that might avoid that cost? Software RAID does not seem to be offered by the Planet, unless I can figure out how to do it after installation (is that possible?) Better ideas in general on the server?

Does These Speed Test Files From Providers Help You Decide

Jul 3, 2008

I am in Europe, and during this week I´ve been doing some speed tests with the files most providers have on their website or they gave me the link here.

I am using a DSL 25Mpbs net connection for the tests.

Here some results from just 3 providers:

FDC (Chicago) - 250k
iWEB (Canada) - 1.2MB
Take2Hosting (San Jose, California) - 1.4MB

My point is, does these speed test file are of any use to have
an idea what speed you can expect with the servers?

The way I see it ,there´s so many variables (shared and how many shared servers for port,
your location, peak hours traffic, etc).

So how does this tests influence you to go for one provide, instead of another?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Full Server Migration To New Server With Same Hostname?

Jul 20, 2015

I'm wondering whether it is possible to perform a full server migration to a new Plesk server with the same hostname or will Plesk give an error about the hostname being the same?

The new server would not be accessible by hostname (only via IP) until DNS and glue records were changed after the migration.

I am moving this web app to a new server (new IP addresses)

Once the DNS progation is complete, I need to then syncronize the data between the old DB/server and the new DB/server.

how to sync two MSSQL 2005 dbs?

Or is there another migration technique? (my hoster won't do any IP forwarding in their hardware)

Server Migration...... Seeksadmin Support

Jul 5, 2008

I Foolishly entrusted a server migration to seeksadmin recently... however they seem unable to provide the required level of support to complete this task... Up to now the average response time per query is between 12 to 24 hours... amazing as we have paid for one hour response package.

We have a small window of opportunity to complete a seemless migration tonight... but again seeksadmin are nowhere to be seen...

We have coordinated with our datacentre and informed our customers that the move will take place tonight, however seeksadmin are either asleep or just can't be bothered to respond... which leaves us with no other option than to try and locate an alternative support company to assist with this migration...

All accounts are copied... it is just a case of hardening the server and installing third party softwares, ensuring all data is up to date and addressing any issues which may arise...

Can anyone suggest a tech/support company who can help out at short notice? Migration will start at CET 01:00 and needs to be completed during the night before my users come back online in the morning...

CPanel Data Migration And New Server Security Setup

Dec 4, 2008

I just signed up for dedicated server at Softlayer with cPanel, mySQL and CentOS. I'm moving a site that is on a VPS with WHM. I know that cPanel has a transfer site feature.

I was considering hiring a service to migrate my site and to harden my server. Is this necessary or should I simply move it via cPanel? Things are tight and I don't want to incur an unnecessary cost if I don't have to. I defer to the members here at WHT for your recommendations.

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Domain Migration To New Server / What To Do With Email During DNS Update

Jun 4, 2014

I have upgraded to a new server and need to move all domains, users, and most important all email accounts to the new server.

Both servers run Plesk 11.0.9 on CentOS. The migration manager works great, no problems with that.

After migrating, I change my DNS settings at an external DNS provider to the new IP. The problem is, DNS changes take time. I then get emails on the old server and on the new server until DNS information is spread.

I was searching for a way to let the old server forward to the new one, but changes for specific domains in plesks DNS system (MX record) on the old server did not work. The mails still arrived at the old server.

What can i do? Can I uncheck "Activate mail service on domain" and will all emails be rejected until DNS points to the new server? Or will that lead to bounces?

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: Backup And Restore - After Server Migration Some Settings Not Copied Across

Dec 22, 2014

After a server migration, some critical Plesk settings were not copied across, even though the option to backup/restore panel configuration was used. e.g.

skeleton (vhosts.skel folder)
php.ini (Program Files (x86)ParallelsPleskAdditionalPleskPHP5* folder)
Default site (vhostsdefault folder)
health config (Program Files (x86)ParallelsPleskadminconfcustom-health-config.xml)
Additional Administrator accounts

Is there a way to get these things to backup and restore that I am doing wrong?

Are there other important settings/data that I have missed from that list? I am still paying to keep the old server in case I discover something else!

Using Plesk Backup & Restore for disaster recovery will lose these settings unless they take extra steps. e.g. I now have a simple batch file that copies these files to a private folder on one of the domains before the daily backup kicks in.

The records with network IP addresses in the DNS transfer restrictions will not be restored."

I've gone to Server, DNS Settings, Transfer Restriction Template and added the new server's IP to the list of allowed networks to no avail. I also couldn't find any documentation on what the cause might be.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: Migration Tool To Move Websites From Old IIS6 To New IIS8.5 Server

Jan 23, 2015

We are migrating an existing multi-site Windows2003/IIS6 web hosting system with

CFusion8
MS Access backend databases
SQL2000 backend databases
http and https site access

to

Windows2012 R2/IIS8.5 with
CFusion10
MS Access backend databases (not updated)
SQL2014 databases
http and https site access

On the new system we are looking to add Plesk12 to give users easier management of their own websites.I am about to install the trail version of Plesk12 WebHOST.I have the following questions:

1. Can we use the plesk migration tool to move the websites from the old IIS6 to the new IIS8.5 server?
2. If not, am I right to think we would migrate from IIS6 to IIS8.5 manually and then import these websites into Plesk12 from the new server?
3. Can I migrate the existing websites piecemeal over onto the new server and into the Plesk control panel at the same time as creating brand new websites under the control panel?
4. Once Plesk is installed on the new IIS server is there a KB article on how to add all these existing websites to Plesk - I could not find one.
5. Is the local windows administrator account used for the install used to run any services?
