2 Dedicated Servers Enough To Handle 2 Million Users

Jan 11, 2009

If I used the PHP mediawiki script and I had10,000 wiki articles, and 2 million users were browsing my site which is hosted on two Dedicated servers that are P4 Quad Core 2.6GHZ 4GB RAM 100Mbit dedicated port with a load balancer, would my servers handle this amount of simultaneous users and how fast would each wiki article take to load when all these 2million users are online if each article was 300KB?

And what is the maximum number of users online at the same do you think these 2 servers could handle?

Redirecting Users Whilst Moving Servers

Jun 15, 2008

I have a question regarding status pages. Whilst setting up a new website, upgrading forum scripts etc what is the best way to redirect users?

I would like myself and one other person to have access to run the tasks, however I would like to redirect visitors to the website to a standby page whilst we are doing this.

What is the best method? .htaccess? IP based?

ThePlanet: Compare With What?

May 19, 2008

I definitely like ThePlanet. They have good support and goot network.

But seems I need to know more from the world.

So could anyone please tell me another DCs that can be compared with TP *in full* (i.e. not "good support but bad network" - "good" should be both).

Who Can Compare To MediaLayer

Sep 24, 2008

Currently I am hosting with MediaLayer and I am very happy with their service. I have been with them for over a year now. Their uptime and speed is amazing. Support is fast, knowledgeable and all round pleasant to work with. I have no problems with them except for one. Their packages are pricey for what you get ($10/month for 500MB Storage, 10GB Transfer, 3 domains ). It is coming time for me to upgrade my package but I do not want to pay the fortune they are asking for a paltry amount of extra resources.

So my question is, what other hosting companies are there out there who can offer me the same excellent services that MediaLayer does but with more resource bang for my buck?

How Does This Server Compare With My Old One

Mar 11, 2008

I am in the process of looking for a new hosting company that has good ddos solutions.

My current server is:

Code:
Intel Dual - Quad-Core Xeon E5320 / 1.86GHz - 8MB cache
2 x 143GB SAS 15k RPM drives - 3ware RAID1 - 8GB ram
the new one that Burstnet is offering me is

Code:
System: Supermicro™ Dual Socket 771
CPU: Intel™ Xeon E5405 Harpertown 2.0GHz 1333FSB 12MB CACHE
Memory: 8GB FSB667 FBDIMM
Hard Drive: (2)15K RPM SAS w/3WARE RAID1
Bandwidth: 2000GB/MONTH
IP Addresses: 5
Port: 10/100MBPS SWITCHED VLAN
Management: FULLY MANAGED
DDOS Protection: TOP LAYER NETWORKS™

So that new server that burstnet is offering me with my LiteSpeed webserver and a good software firewall and it all optimised, do you feel I will be in good hands, and a good set-up to withstand a heavy or a good ddos attack?

How Do These Colocation Facilities Compare

Jul 24, 2007

Check out the following two colocation facilities' most basic plans and let me know what you think? Are they offering a reasonable set of services and resources for the price?

I ask because many of you are located in larger American centers as opposed to smaller Canadian ones - you therefore enjoy the benefits of competitive pricing and services, while in most cities in Canada that isn't the case. I just want to make sure that their packages are on par with industry - as I'm new to the industry, your comments are appreciated.

(Keep in mind the prices are in Canadian dollars, which is almost equal to the US dollar.)

Silver Package:
[url]

Colocation 1:
[url]

The first link above only offers 10 GB of monthly traffic. Would you say this is reasonable?

Also, is their definition of "escorted access" the same as the rest of the industry, whereby they unplug the server, put it on a table, and watch while you do whatever you have to? I realize that unescorted access isn't possible if you don't have a significant portion of the rack to yourself, but I'm surprised that you're required to unplug your server, because this leads to guaranteed downtime.

With some packages that offer 10 Mbps, does this mean that buying switches and server NICs that are Gigabit Ethernet or even 100 Mbps are pointless? You could just buy 10 Mbps?

What other comments could you add, in terms of questions I haven't asked in this post? And are there any other things I should ask of these facilities while shopping around?

We currently have a VPS with PowerVPS and their support is amazing. I cannot complain they are excellent. Now we are planning to get another VPS but we might not get it from PowerVPS as much as we love to get it from them. Because at the same price we can get 3 times the specs from ModVPS. I just want to know if ModVPS' support is as amazing as PowerVPS.

How Does Google App Engine Compare To Web Hosting Plans?

Apr 2, 2009

Google App Engine offers free quotas of 1 GB outbound traffic per day and 6.5 CPU-hours (based on a 1.2 GHz Intel x86 processor) per day.

How do those free quotas compare to web hosting plans? For example, the traffic supported by the free quotas -- is that
generally higher or less than the traffic supported by a typical $5/mo shared hosting account?

Above the free quotas, Google charges $0.12 per GB outgoing traffic, $0.10 per GB incoming traffic, $0.10 per CPU-hour, $0.15 per GB storage per month.

How do those numbers translate to normal web hosting plans? For example, the traffic that can be supported by a $40/mo VPS plan and $200/mo dedicated server plan, what would they cost on Google App Engine?

I know it depends on a lot of factors, but if anyone has any ballpark estimates or experiences they're willing to share I'd really appreciate it.

I'm trying to decide between App Engine and standard web hosting for a DB-backed Python site. The site will start small, but if the traffic grows I want to see which would be a better option long term.

Compare Dedicated Server Companies/File Hosting Services

Apr 11, 2008

I own a semi-popular downloads website which I host on one server while the actual files/downloads are hosted on another server. This downloads server is very low-end ( AMD Sempron 3000, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, CentOS with lighttpd, no control panel, etc.) and is connected via a 100Mbit shared line with a 3300GB bandwidth limit. Originally, I had it on a 10Mbit dedicated unmetered line but I hoped that by upgrading to the 100Mbit, I'd get better burst speeds, faster transfers/downloads, and a bit more bandwidth in general. Well, this doesn't seem to be the case so I'm looking for a new server or file hosting service hopefully on a better and faster network.

Right now, I'm considering the following companies/services:

* Profithost.net - Decent Dedicated server with nice bandwidth
* Redhostservers.com - OK Dedicated server with awesome bandwidth
* Server4you.com - Great Dedicated server with good bandwidth

* File-services.com - Decently priced pure file hosting with OK features
* MegaUpload Business account with Hotlink Quota - Decently priced pure file hosting with nice features

Preventing Users From Connecting To Other Users Database

Mar 25, 2009

On my server, users can connect to any database as long as they have the database user and password. This makes it easier to hack any database on the server.
What I want to do is to make the users can only connect to their own databases and not other's.

I tried changing the localhost ip address but it didn't work ( I assume I didn't do it the right way)

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Load Balancing 2 Web Servers And 2 MySQL Servers

Mar 28, 2008

I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer.

I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat).

Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server.

111.222.111.222 (Main IP)
111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP)
111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP)
If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes.
If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes.

Is it possible to do this?

If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so)

Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers

Oct 11, 2009

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

SFTP Users

Oct 14, 2009

we have a WHM account... we have different accounts on that...and for each account, there are add-on domains underneath that. (i hope you know what i mean)

and we set it up to use only SFTP to connect to server. no FTP.

after we have set it up that way, it seems that we can only connect to SFTP using 1 user/pass for each account... that is the same user/pass we use for Cpanel of each account.

say, i have Account A... under Account A, i have addon domains: A1.com, A2.com, A3.com...
setting SFTP only on that server, all those addon domains of Account A, can only use 1 user/pass to login to SFTP which is the cpanel access also of Account A.

question is.... is this behavior correct??

how can we create a different user for each add-on domain?
