2 Dedicated Servers Enough To Handle 2 Million Users
Jan 11, 2009
If I used the PHP mediawiki script and I had10,000 wiki articles, and 2 million users were browsing my site which is hosted on two Dedicated servers that are P4 Quad Core 2.6GHZ 4GB RAM 100Mbit dedicated port with a load balancer, would my servers handle this amount of simultaneous users and how fast would each wiki article take to load when all these 2million users are online if each article was 300KB?
And what is the maximum number of users online at the same do you think these 2 servers could handle?

I use zoneedit to point my domain to the server, and a few times their servers don't respond for a few minutes that causes my site to be unaccessible. I was wondering if there was any better way of doing this? Please give me suggestions on what to do to have proper dns.

Let's say a dedicated server has following specs:
Single quad core 2Ghz Xeon cpu
4Gb ram
250Gb SATA
100Mbps connection
and each blog has latest WP version and some plugins(without supercache) installed, 100 unique hits/day.
so how many blogs can I plant in this box?
(bandwidth is not considered.)

I own two large hacking // gaming sites and host a few others. I need a company that can offer fully managed, secure, ddos protected, fast dedicated servers.
A big thing with me is if someone sends my hosting company a message saying, HEY your server is hosting hacks or illegal material, the company wont just go OH OK and shut down the server.

I have a question regarding status pages. Whilst setting up a new website, upgrading forum scripts etc what is the best way to redirect users?
I would like myself and one other person to have access to run the tasks, however I would like to redirect visitors to the website to a standby page whilst we are doing this.
What is the best method? .htaccess? IP based?

if i use uk2.net's dedicated, will my US users feel slower connection?
if i host my site on uk2.net, will the site load slower for US visitors because the server is in uk ?
what about FDCservers, and serverpronto, any opinions on them ?
uk2.net appeals because of the price.

Some information about my forum:
I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.
The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.
Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?
The server I am looking at has these stats:
E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management
The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.
Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?

I started a friendship network few months ago and now have 8 million people.
Now I send a weekly newsletter and periodic updates to all and my weekly newsletter reaches the last person after a month. The fastes server I have is a quad core and it sends 300,000 in a day.
It takes 15 days for my three servers to send mails to all. And another 5 to 6 days to clear the queue of bounces and all the mess you know. So I am in real trouble. Most memebrs of the network are form India, Indonesia etc so don't make enuf to buy several hgh end servers.
Is there a solution to send them all in a few hours? I would really love that! Also if you can suggest a better software to handle bounces and reporting, I am using OEM Pro which is full of bugs (I think).

to send 3.6 million emails over a week period of time. it is for a client that wants to send an email about their new account policies. these users are clients from different domains. how can this be done.
They have an exchange server onsite. should they use that server or do you recommend going through a service? if so whom do you recommend that is good?
Do you recommend going with a dedciated server for email? what server specs?
the email will not have an attachment just a few lines and a link to their own site.
with whatever solution you recommend? please give me price ranges?
Dell and such enterprise companies send emails all the time with that many emails and more to external clients... how do they do it.
I just do not want to get black listed and want to make sure all or most of they clients get it.

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

In my old server (VPS) I had my dir structure as:
sitea.com was pointing to
/home/me/public_html/sitea
siteb.com was pointing to
/home/me/public_html/siteb
On my new server, I have root permissions and used Plesk to create two domains sitea.com and siteb.com . Now plesk asks for a user to be created for each domain, so created usera and userb for sitea and siteb respectively.
Now as root on my server I created the dir /home/me/ and untarred the whole backup from old server to new server and I have dirs :
/home/me/public_html/sitea and /home/me/public_html/siteb
In apache configuration in file:
httpd.include_sitea under
dir /var/www/vhosts/sitea.com/conf/httpd.include
I changed the document root to /home/me/public_html/sitea
So I thought I am all set. But it does not work. When I try sitea.com in the browser it works but for all subdirs, for eg sitea.com/images it says Access denied.
This is because the dirs I created are owned by root.
So the owner of /home/me/public_html/sitea needs to be usera for this to work ?
Again for siteb to work I need to change the owner of /home/me/public_html/siteb to userb ?
This will be painful ? At least I should be able to change the owner of /home/me/public_html/ to one owner and ensure all sites under that work fine. How do I do that ?
I think the problem is clear by now. Its that I want all my sites to work off from .../public_html/ sub dirs.

Assuming -

All pageviews consume max of 20 GB

Close to 100% uptime (As we all know 100% is not possible)
I know these name only (not sure they agree all above mentioned conditions or not) -

Currently, I am using 1 VPS, and pay $30/mo.
Now, I want more resource. Should I buy another VPS ($30/mo)? Or buy a dedicated server(<=$60/mo)?
I understand that the 3rd choice is 1 upgraded VPS($60/mo). But I do NOT think it's better than 2 small VPS($30/mo).
which one is better? For now, I do NOT want to pay more than $60/mo.

My lease with LayeredTech is about to renew, so I am looking for better deals, and I found several $23 $24 $30 dedicated offers here. How are those servers/network/dc comparing to layeredtech?
I have not been looking for 2 years, because I was in other business. Badly needing a update on server industry now.
I thought utility bills are up, inflation is high, so it is a shock to see the price of dedicated servers are falling.

Does anyone know of a dedicated servers in USA/Canada that allow IRCd, and the price is UNDER $70/mo.
A server that has atleast 1GHz of processing power is good, such as a (Dual) P3 or a Celeron, or anything better.
It needs atleast 512MB of ram, and atleast 10GB IDE/SCSI (SCSI preferred, not needed) HDD.
And with atleast 1TB+ bandwidth.
Netdirekt has a $50 server which is what I need, though its in Germany, I prefer a USA/Canada server.

Currently I run my forum with a host that is having too much downtime for my liking. I run a new forum on vBulletin with 210 + members with 1-5 new members. My main requirements are PHP5, MySQL5 and OpenSSL. What would your suggestions be for a host / server specification? Unfortunately as I am not using any advertising so my monthly budget is rather low ($50). We currently have a dedicated server with a 2.4ghz processor and 512mb ram but I would be more than happy to move to a vps if it would be more reliable.

On my server, users can connect to any database as long as they have the database user and password. This makes it easier to hack any database on the server.
What I want to do is to make the users can only connect to their own databases and not other's.
I tried changing the localhost ip address but it didn't work ( I assume I didn't do it the right way)

Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.50GHz
2x250gb
2gb
100mbit
10TB bandwidth
$280
That price is pretty competitive, especially for 10tb dedicated bandwidth.
I was wondering if anyone has any servers with them? What's it been like?
Would be interesting to know since their main business line is just shared hosting.

Need somewhere that has servers with over 4gb of ram (that should be everywhere these days, but you never know). Need CentOS 64bit offered. Anywhere in the UK is fine. 100mb port. At least 1500gb of bandwith. Fairly cheap bandwidth.
I know thats a pretty loose description i know, but does anyone have any suggestions?

We’ve been asked to offer a technical proposal for a new established TV station, and the IT manager of the station has a long list of requirements, we covered it all, only one issues lift as we never done it before:
They want about 20-100 GB server for hosting and they want to have a mirror server, incase the 1st server was down, so it would redirect the visitors to the mirror server, I'm thinking of getting them a dedicated or semi-dedicated server, but how do you do the mirror issue.
Some one said to get two dedicated servers, but::
1. How we make it that when one is down, it automatically directed to the other, I believe there is software’s for that, so were do we install this software: the original server or the mirror server.
2. Should they be from two different companies and to different countries?
3. The web site will be with CMS and DB, how do you make sure that the mirror server have all the new data that was updated in the 1st server’s DB, do they have like shared DB or something, and how..
Any other information, links, or suggested hosting sites for reliable dedicated server (with big bandwidth) would be greatly appreciated.. thanx
P.S. We use PHP/ MySql technology.
