The server is on 1 Gbit shared connection.
The bandwidth seems increase/decrease quickly. Can this happen? I have another file hosting server, on that bandwidth usage is almost sine wave.
Lighttpd web server is running properly and never crashed.

How To Interpret Munin Memory Usage Graph
Oct 5, 2007The memory usage on my server has slowly been creeping up over the last few weeks due to increased load. Here is my munin memory usage graph for the last week:

Could someone tell me what I need to be looking for or how to interpret this?
The cache and buffers have been getting really high but also has the inactive memory… so its looks as though its using memory and marking it as inactive afterwards and although graph shows I have massive memory use at first glace it also shows I have half my ram inactive and therefore available to be used.
MRTG With 95% And Usage Info

Also, how do I set the maximum of allowed traffic (to be taken as "maximum" for the percentage calculation)?
MRTG Usage Explanations
Oct 25, 2007My ISP is using MRTG (95th percentile) for my monthly billing. However the numbers showing on my "usage" page aren't adding up. Well, to clarify, the number by which they bill me at is the "Last 30 days usage (Metered 95%): xxxx mb/s". But this number isn't reflecting what I am seeing in the individual Daily/Weekly/Monthly stats and graphs.
Daily:
Max in: 38.0 kb/s
Max out 320.9 kb/s
Avg In: 4216.0 b/s
Avg out 24.1 kb/s
Weekly:
Max In: 1692.4 kb/s
Max Out 5675.1 kb/s
Avg In: 26.9 kb/s
Avg Out 86.8 kb/s
Monthly:
Max In: 3541.9 kb/s
Max Out 5635.4 kb/s
Avg In: 298.4 kb/s
Avg Out 410.4 kb/s
Last 30 Days uaage (Metered 95%): 4518.43 kb/s
Now for two weeks my server was pushing nearly 10 mb/s (95th percentile only use the HIGHER of the In OR Out as its measurement)- and then for the next 10 days my server has barely pushed 100 kb/s. 10 days ago the "Last 30 days usage" number was 4480.1 mb/s, but today, 10 days later, the "LAst 30 days usage" is 4518.4 kb/s. My ISP tells me that "last 30 days uage" is calculated every 5 minutes. But if my usage 10 days ago was 4480kb/s and my server has barely pushed ANY bandwidth since, shouldn't the laws of averages see that number steadily declining?
As an example: If I pushed exactly 10mb/s for exactly two weeks, then pushed 0mb/s for the next two weeks....then the average mb/s for a 30 day period (not calculating 95th %) would be 5mb/s. And as the 3rd week started, I would steadily see the 30 day usage start to decline and eventually reach 5mb/s on the last day of the 30 period. This is a logical, and my approach, to understanding this - yet the numbers aren't indicating this.

May 23, 2007I will be setting up a LAN at home where there will be a few PCs connected to the network.
My idea is that I will have linux box where I will route all the traffic through to monitor it. I was wondering what would be a free solution to go "hardcore" on this. When I mean hardcore, I really mean hardcore. I want stats, packet shaper etc.. It would be a learning process for me too. The only thing is that alot of solutions out there are more enterprise and expensive.
Anyone here use or know a good solution? I was told I could use m0nowall on freeBSD. Another thing I was looking at would be Squid. But to be honest I'm not sure.
Whats a good free software that can do this? Perhaps something really cheap if there is a cost involved.
Monitor/track Bandwidth With Ipchains?
Sep 28, 2006I'm working on setting something up for monitoring my bandwidth/traffic on multiple interfaces. I have setup interface aliases so I have eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1 and the issue I'm running into is that it seems snmp cannot tell the diff between the aliased interfaces. I've found references in the cacti forums of using ipchains rules to track the bandwidth, but I've not found a good howto that explains what I need to get going on this.
Any clues/hints?

I am using the CentOS version 4.x right now, and munin is already set up and configured with a basic install.
Anyone know how to add traffic/bandwidth monitoring? (Ideally, it would monitor all active ports.. but I only really need it to monitor port 1194 for openVPN software.)

Cpu Usage And Bandwidth
Jun 14, 2007In your professional opinion, does a simple shared account with 20+ gigs of bandwidth have enough to handle a website that, for a week out of a month, might hit about 5 or so thousand visits (to a single web page with mysql connection) per hour?
The traffic wouldn't last at that rate for more than a few days. but I want to make sure even a basic good web host with a shared account can handle this. Or is a must that I hit a dedicated server?
Linux, bsaic dual intel set-up like any other seems to be what I will have. Not sure about ram, but I am on a reseller account and the only one that will have real traffic.

probably alerts like.. you have consumed 80%/90%/95%/98%/99% of ur bandwidth limit.. Isn't it fair to expect this?

Jun 16, 2009I have a small VPS that is running only openVPN. (No http/pop/ftp/imap/smtp...) Only one port is open for the openVPN software.
I've also disabled (not running) any other networking software, so there is no apache or anything "normal" like that.
It's a plain-jane CentOS 5.3 install, used only for openVPN.
The problem is that I have no idea how much bandwidth is being used.
Since the openVPN does not track bandwidth usage, I am now looking for some other way to do it...
I am thinking that perhaps munin or cacti or something like that would be a solution?
Basically, the only statistic I need to actually monitor is bandwidth, as I don't care about disk space, load, memory, or anything else..
(The server is using VirtualVM, but since that software is insecure... the VPS control panel is not currently online, so all the normal "tools" that the VPS came with are not working.)
FMIS Bandwidth Usage
Dec 11, 2008We're not the Influxis host and also not affiliated with the host.
We wanted to get affiliated with this host but they don't have an affilate program.
We're currently hosting applications used from videowhisper com , videochat-software com (not the websites, just flash server applications) and also for multiple customers.
One of our applications generated today 18Gb of traffic on Influxis for about 100 connections!
The interesting part is that another copy of it used for our main demos generated 0.25Gb for 350 connections (as it usually does).
And the most important part is that the person running and testing that application from soberfolk org contacted us that video streaming was not working at all for it - and we had to restart VHost to get things back to normal. It was returning an error about bad stream name in flash debugger.
So video streaming was not working and it used hundreds of times more than it usually does.
Very weird.. we contacted them. We'll keep you updated about this.
We mention that the software we use has ghost detection routines that close connections occurring when users abruptly disconnect from FMS servers.
Did any of you get any huge bandwidth usage on FMS hosts due to ghosts or other errors?
