Fine Points Of A Colocation Management Agreement

Jan 24, 2008

We are talking with a datacentre about colocation and im hiring a third party company to manage the servers 'on site' on our behalf.

Im looking for some feedback on the 'colocation agreement' and the 'server management agreement' to make sure were covering everything.

just to be clear, Ive got a server administrator who will access the server virtually so the only points of the agreement will be those tasks that need to be done 'on site'.

the points ive looked at so far are:

colocation agreement
> 1u and 2u costs.
> Server setup costs.
> Power allocation and cost of additional amp's.
> Bandwidth overages.
> storage space for spares

onsite server management agreement
> hardware replacement costs .
> Hardware upgrade costs.
> status monitoring.
> general server management.

1) what else should be covered in the colocation details?

2) what should be included within the 'on site server management' agreement?

3) what should be included under the description 'general server management'.

for example: I think physical reboots should be part of the server management agreement, but how many on average per server per month should be included?

3) should hardware replacement cost be fixed rate per task or hourly, also do you have any suggestions regarding what to expect over a year (nothing exact, just a bit of guidance to help with the budgeting)

Combined these agreements should cover everything that we can not do remotely.

Memory Fine, Cpu Fine, Server Load RED

Jul 12, 2008

The memory usage on my server is fine, I watched the CPUs for a long time and watched the server load also, the CPUs were easily riding along not often going over 20% (I have 2) yet the thing is, the server load is very strangely going mad... It's rarely under 6.0 (2 cpus) and sometimes goes into 20s, yet the server doesn't slow, nothing stops working but it simply goes red and shows it's bad news.

I've been told that the only other thing that might be causing this is the hard drives... I have 2x160GB 7200rpm hard drives - not sure if they are SATA etc..

If anyone has any ideas as to why the server load is so high - but everything else is fine -

Some Sites Load Slow, Some Sites Load Fine, Server Load Is Fine

Aug 12, 2008

I'm having the oddest issue. For some reason, some of the websites on my server load fine, and some take a really long time to load (2 minutes).

Now, the server load is fine, and the size of the sites aren't the issue either. I've restarted Apache and a couple more services, and still the same sites seem to load very slow.

What could be causing this since it's only effecting certain websites?

Ping & Tracert Fine, Then Why Cannot Find Server?

Jan 4, 2007

I have a problem with one of my domain. Some users around the world cannot access the website, but they can ping and traceroute the server without any problems. I am able to access the website perfectly.

Site URL is www.djluv.in

And we are using IPB 2.2

Moreover if theres another domain on the same server, they can access it.

There are about 25-30 users who are facing this problem, but from different part of the world so I cant even say ISP problem.

APF has been shutdown, no Ban Filters on IPB or cpanel.

What are the possible reasons why they couldn't access the website? how to fix the problem?

FTP Crawls, But HTTP Speeds Are Fine.... For One Customer Only

Nov 21, 2008

Anybody seen something like this before? We have a customer who is complaining about slow FTP speeds. At first I thought his whole connection to our server is slow (he is in the mideast, we're in the USA), but through a series of tests and screenshots I've confirmed:

1) He can download from our server via HTTP at 500KB+/sec

2) If he downloads the same file, from the same server, via FTP, it goes <1KB/sec.

I've had him try different FTP software; same result. Maybe his ISP is rate limiting FTP?

Every other customer can download fine via HTTP and FTP, and all my tests from various testing servers I have around the world show good speeds from both.

FTP Password Incorrect - CPanel Login Fine

Mar 20, 2008

When I try to login to any accounts on my server via FTP the responce is:

Quote:

[20/03/2008 15:41:15] 331 User restore OK. Password required
COMMAND:>[20/03/2008 15:41:15] PASS
[20/03/2008 15:41:16] 530 Login authentication failed

I can login to their cPanel accounts fine using the exact same password so I'm not sure what the problem is. I've tried restarting the FTP server and syncing the ftp passwords using WHM -> cPanel -> Synchronize FTP Passwords but still no luck. I've tried changing the account password but I can still login to cPanel with the new password but not ftp.

I try connect to the ftp server via the IP address and domain (ftp.domain.com) but again, no luck.

Apache :: Access HTTP Address Redirects To HTTPS Just Fine

Jun 19, 2013

I'm currently struggling with an issue on our Apache 2.2.24 home-rolled installation on an OEL 6.2 x64 linux server that front-ends for a Glassfish cluster via proxypass. The httpd.conf manages 4 virtual hosts with each virtual host entry rewriting to HTTPS.

Anyone trying to access the HTTP address redirects to HTTPS just fine. The issue is that anyone using the HTTPS address gets redirected to the Document Root defined in Apache instead of being proxypassed to Glassfish.

I had set up a dummy DocumentRoot with a simple index.html meta redirect and what happens is that anyone directly accessing HTTPS will hit the index.html file which redirects to the the https site. At this point it simply loops to infinity.

Name Servers Have Updated, But Site Still Points To Old Host! (was "")

I emailed my host about this and they told me to email my registrar. The host says the domain is registered with the new name servers but these name servers are registered with IPs outside of their network. I'm confused and have never had this problem before when changing DNS.

Www.mysite.com And Mysite.com Points To Different Places

Nov 1, 2007

I have a VPS hosting account with godaddy and i already had a website over there. Lets say www.first.com

Now,I registered a different domain name and as i want to host this second website on the same server, i went into my control panel and "Added a new Domain" and told it's registered with godaddy nameservers and it's create a new user account and points this second website to the new user account folder.

So,when I type www.first.com, it goes to the first website
And,when I type www.second.com, it goes to the second website

So,far everything is fine. But here's the problem

And,when I type second.com, it goes to the first website

When I checked the MX Records in the godaddy account, both the domains point to the same VPS account IP i.e:

@ xx.xx.xx.xx

how to resolve this problem?

OS (VPS) Management

Oct 25, 2008

I recently got my hands on a few unmanaged VPS to play around with and learn how to work on them (eventually plan on going dedicated, so this is a preparation for that). I know the basics of working on Linux via command line, but beyond that I'm clueless. Does anyone know of any good guides for setting up and managing a LAMP environment on a VPS?

I'm mostly interested in CentOS and Debian.

I can find guides specifically for 1 or 2 things, but so far the only useful (complete) guide I've found is the one here. I'm not sure if that's still up to date on todays standards as it was written 2 years ago?

Things I'm looking for:

- Installing and setting up a LAMP environment

- Jailing SSH

- User/Group management

- Firewall setup / security hardening (I've read the thread in VPS tutorials as well as the one in Technical and Security Tutorials about securing your hosting company)
2 more questions...

1) Wondering what would be better... webmin or ispconfig? From what I understand webmin is more OS oriented and allows easy configuration of various parts of the OS while ispconfig is more hosting oriented? I take it running both at the same time is not recommended/needed?

2) Still not entirely sure what OS to choose. In my VPS atm I have the following available (along with the likes of Ubuntu, Gentoo and SuSE but I think the list bellow is what I should use). Would love if someone could list some advantages/disadvantages of each.

- centos-5-i386-afull

- centos-5-i386-hostinabox571

- debian-3.1-i386-minimal

- debian-4.0-i386-minimal

Appreciate any input.
Thanks for reading.

DNS Management

Sep 6, 2007

We run around 300 domains for our clients; in the past we've believed that it was better to outsource DNS hosting, we've used a few different local companies but now we're getting to the stage that I'd like to consolidate all the records to one company.

Does anyone have any reccomendations for ultra reliable, easy to manage? Or is it better to put a dedicated machine in and run our own service?

I've got a few domains with Zoneedit, but I want to way-up some alternatives, I don't think the zoneedit admin is particularly user friendly and it's quite expensive $1000+ a year for what we need.

DNS Server And DNS Management

Jan 10, 2009

i have few dedi servers from one Us company, i am currently using their DNS service, we are into small level hosting, i want to run my own DNS, is it necessary to run a separate server for DNS?

Actually how the hosting companies do the name server pointing, for an example if i am buying a server and want to host a few domains in that server, what normally we do is we will change the name server to that companies name server
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

my question is if i am pointing my domains name server to the name server
ns1.companydomain.com
ns2.companydomain.com

how that company points the domain to my server for an example its ip is 72.xx.52.xx i am bit confused in this.

Also i have a doubt how they are creating this for n number of domains?

DMZ Server Management & PCI

Sep 14, 2009

We are working on our pci certification ( fun times right? ) and i was wondering what other people do for server management in the dmz. Few things we are looking at listed below. We will be doing cisco zbfw for firewalling and using NAT.

#1
Servers have 2 nics, 2 ips, gateway ect. One of the networks would be considered a "management vlan/network". Other network would be for all other traffic, including natting to the internet, and traffic to the "internal" zone but locking down traffic to source, destination, and protocol level.
On windows you really on have 1 true default gateway, and because windows doesnt just send traffic out the interface it came in, but looks at the routing table, some network routing issues popped up.

#2
Use only 1 nic/vlan/ip/gateway. Lock down traffic to source, destination, and protocol level for dmz to "internal" traffic and do an "inspect" statement to allow all necessary traffic back in and drop everything else. "Internal" to dmz would just be an inspect all because this traffic wouldnt need to be firewalled so management traffic would work just fine.
