Finding A Provider With Good Spam Protection

Sep 5, 2009

I have a client who is not happy with their current hosting provider. They get a significant amount of spam to their email addresses. Are there any providers you can recommend that offer good spam protection?

Research - Finding A EU Provider

Jan 10, 2009

I'm doing some research into EU data centres and was trying to find a list of good, reliable centres that offer good speeds to, and around, the whole of Europe - especially the UK.

The provider we currently use is LeaseWeb (NL), who have been very good, however, due to their servers being a very specific specification and currently not what we're looking for, we are looking for a good replacement.

I don't think I would like a centre that is located in the UK, whilst it would be better for us, it would not benefit all of our customers - a host somewhere in the middle would do great.

Hosts With HEAVY DUTY Spam Protection..

Jul 25, 2007

Are there any hosting companies that use an Enterprise strength SPAM solution such as IronPort?

We have 3-4 business websites and spam, especially within the last 6 months, has become a tremendous problem. At least 100 spam emails a day are being delivered.

Spam filters do not solve the problem - they simply put some percentage of spam in a folder, often genuine emails, and we still have to go through it manually.

Do not mind paying a premium for the hosting. Any hosts that offer HEAVY DUTY spam protection?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Maximize Spam Protection

Oct 22, 2014

I have 5 Linux Plesk 12 servers, and I use Spamassassin, usually at a sensitivity of 2 or 3, I also use the following DNS

Blackhole lists: zen. spamhaus. org;b. barracudacentral.org;abuse.rfc-ignorant.org;cbl.abuseat.org;bl.spamcop.net;nomail.rhsbl.sorbs.net

But all of this seems to have minimal effect. I examine spam that comes through which looks very obviously like spam, but Spamassassin gives it a very low score, usually in the negative numbers.

Is SA just not as effective as I thought? Seems like if Gmail, etc can filter spam so effectively, then why can't SA? If there's something I'm not doing right, or what you all do to combat spam with Plesk 12.

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Protection From Outgoing Spam - Error

I have some error when the new outgoing spam protection (limitation for outgoing mail) is enabled. Mail clients are unable to use SMTP for sending mails. "My mail client says: The message could not be sent. You are not allowed to use sendmail utility."

I don't undestand the blocking behaviour since the checkbox "Allow scripts and users to use Sendmail" is checked and no limit is exeeded. This is the relevant log part of maillog:

Is Your Web Hosting Provider’s Support Is Good

Sep 6, 2008

There are a lot of people whether their web hosting providers are good or not. After months of purchasing their web hosting account they might discover that their web hosting providers are so bad. Therefore, you’d better checking your web hosting provider.

One of the most important parts related to web hosting is the supporting services. So when you purchase a new web hosting account, try to check their supporting services. Try to ask them a few technical questions even you don’t have a problem. It just tests their supporting quality. How do they answer your questions quickly? Ask yourself this question. If they spend a lot of time “two or three days”, it might be poor service. For this situation, my advice is to cancel your account. The most of web hosting companies offer 30 days money back and try another web hosting company.

There are many supports kinds:

* HelpDesk
* Live chat
* Supporting via Phone
* Supporting forum
* And so on

This is all about the supporting part for your web hosting provider. So this is very important to check this service.

Good Secure Managed Dedicated Hosting Provider?

Jun 20, 2006

I work for a small web design firm with about 100 clients/domains and we are starting the search for a new hosting provider. We need a managed dedicated server with an offsite backup. We are also looking for a company that knows what they are talking about. If we have a Linux or server question they need to be able to give us a quick straight answer. Also, if they could help us transfer all our hosting accounts from our current server over to the new one that would be a BIG plus.

We have been thinking about Rackspace or 1and1.com but were wondering what the community thought. Any recommendations?

Good Colocation Service Provider In Hong Kong

Nov 15, 2007

our company just decided to buy two servers in Hong Kong and colocate them there. Does anyone know a reputable hosting company (data center) in Hong Kong that offers colocation service?

we hope the hosting company/data center can buy the servers for us - probably give us a few choices with different configurations and prices so we can pick two middle level servers. Is this something a typical data center/hosting company can help us with?

up-time is not critical for our website, but we want a hosting company (data center) we can work with for many years, therfore it has to be a stable and reputable (maybe large) company/center.

How To Explain To Your Hosting Provider The ABC Of Fighting Spam

Jun 22, 2007

incompetent monkey that works as the "security" expert of my current dedicated server provider. He got a report from SpamCop regarding an email that was sent as if it was from an address of my domain, i.e the header looks like this:

From: <made-up-firstname-and-lastname>@www.mydomain.com [this alone looks fake]
The rest of the header are addresses of various servers in Argentina and Germany that the mail bounced off, while my server is in America.

I'm trying to explain to this baboon that you can set the From field to be pretty much anything, but he still reckons that because when he visits the domain in the From field, it is my website and I should be responsible for the spam.

Is there any tip you guys have for dealing with people like this, at least to buy me enough time to organise a replacement server in case of an emergency cutover?

Sorry I'm pretty annoyed at having to deal with this after getting home from a great Friday night out. They're giving me 12h to resolve this BS.

List Of Good Hosters With Good TELEPHONE Tech Support

May 6, 2008

I'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.

( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)

Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:

-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.

- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.

- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:

- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.

I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.

ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".

I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.

My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.

Finding The Right Host

Nov 4, 2009

I were already at two paid hosts and had no good experience.

Then I have tried a few freehosts and saw a lot of rubbish.

I searched and searched, chatted to support chats of hosts - but no luck yet!
then I came here and now I ask you to find a right (US) hosting service...

First I tell you what site I have, that you can truly estimate:
I have a private website and on it are many photoshop pictures for the design of my website (15kb-200kb per picture).

I offer 3D models for binary downloading in zip files (filesize
1 MB - 15 MB each). I need html, php, SSI, mysql, phpmyadmin, .htaccess and cpanel. I have alexa tracking, google ads and few other javascript tracking providers on my site which are loading heavy according to my former hosts opinion. I have few banner ads, popups, flash animations, the usual things on a site that it looks good to gamers.

Gamers are my main audience.

Diskspace used: currently 500 MB.*
Bandwidth: currently 150 GB / month*
Daily unique hits / pages: 15000.*
* Those values might grow in future.

Optional I have a bb forum for responses and questions installed, but I would reduce to HTML only, if it would be needed.

One host kicked me out without warning because of bandwidth / CPU, before I have used the bandwidth limit specified in my hosting plan.

Another one threw me out without notification because of 'abuse of server resources', whereby the reason or script has been not specified.

In both cases I have no clue what I had to do about.

I have only HTML, a MYBB, pictures, javascript, one database
and lots of traffic ofc.

Now I need a host who is willing / able to host that.

It's a private non-profit site, so the costs should be adequate.

I think I'm unable to go dedicated by fees, it should be still shared hosting.

My competition has similar sites, even larger. They host for free or for shared fees. I cannot ask them and didn't find out where they would host.

A domain I have already. Need just the DNS servers to point to a new host.

Help Finding Bottleneck

Sep 4, 2008

Response time from my web server (running LAMP) was really slow this evening. mpstat showed nothing, CPU hovered under 5%, mem usage around 25%, iowait minimal. mysql processlist was mostly idle, no slow queries logged. Only other thing I can think of is the connection from the host itself? (Not my local connection as multiple users complained about slow performance.)

Concurrent users was higher than average, but shouldnt this manifest itself in higher CPU util?

My question was, is there something besides network latency I could be looking at? If it is network latency, what's the easiest way for me to confirm this? A simple ping?
