View 14 RepliesI work for a small web design firm with about 100 clients/domains and we are starting the search for a new hosting provider. We need a managed dedicated server with an offsite backup. We are also looking for a company that knows what they are talking about. If we have a Linux or server question they need to be able to give us a quick straight answer. Also, if they could help us transfer all our hosting accounts from our current server over to the new one that would be a BIG plus.
We have been thinking about Rackspace or 1and1.com but were wondering what the community thought. Any recommendations?
I have around 10 VPS clients and I'm renting each VPS for ~35/m.
Is there a cheaper solution? A company providing a managed Virtuozzo dedicated server, for instance?
I have a client looking for a managed hosting facility in Delaware.
Can anyone provide recommendations for a Tier II or Tier III Provider?
Is there any VPS Provider that does Managed Hosting but also as part of that managed service, installs 3rd party scripts whenever needed?
I have been using Future Hosting and they were providing this for me but have been told today that they have changed their policy and will no longer install 3rd Party scripts.
This is first time i am writing about hostgator using there service since 4 years.
I have 3 dedicated servers purchased with them within last 6 months and orderd for 4th server on 31st Aug 08. And now as business is growing i will need more and more servers every 2- 3 month. But its seems hostgator is not interested in business as they had already grown now. Even they don't care of their loyal customers who are them with years.
On 3rd day of orderd they told me my server will be deliverd within next 24 hours and on 4th day i contact them serveral times they keep on repiting they will upate and then they said server is out of stock and will be available soon and today is 5th day still there is no reply from them and when i contact them they clearly have no idea about it. Some says will get it soon and when i show my ticket. they say its still out of stock . When i contact with theplant.com datacenter they told me the server is available to order and are never out of stock.
I dont know whats actual reason.
Please help me guys to find good manage dedicated server host so i can cancel my order with them and go to another good company.
Can anybody suggest me some value based managed vps service providers. Price is a big factor I must say and I want fully managed services.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThere are a lot of people whether their web hosting providers are good or not. After months of purchasing their web hosting account they might discover that their web hosting providers are so bad. Therefore, you’d better checking your web hosting provider.
One of the most important parts related to web hosting is the supporting services. So when you purchase a new web hosting account, try to check their supporting services. Try to ask them a few technical questions even you don’t have a problem. It just tests their supporting quality. How do they answer your questions quickly? Ask yourself this question. If they spend a lot of time “two or three days”, it might be poor service. For this situation, my advice is to cancel your account. The most of web hosting companies offer 30 days money back and try another web hosting company.
There are many supports kinds:
* HelpDesk
* Live chat
* Supporting via Phone
* Supporting forum
* And so on
This is all about the supporting part for your web hosting provider. So this is very important to check this service.
a good web host that provides unlimited bandwith and supports PHP?
View 17 Replies View RelatedI have a client who is not happy with their current hosting provider. They get a significant amount of spam to their email addresses. Are there any providers you can recommend that offer good spam protection?
View 14 Replies View Relatedour company just decided to buy two servers in Hong Kong and colocate them there. Does anyone know a reputable hosting company (data center) in Hong Kong that offers colocation service?
we hope the hosting company/data center can buy the servers for us - probably give us a few choices with different configurations and prices so we can pick two middle level servers. Is this something a typical data center/hosting company can help us with?
up-time is not critical for our website, but we want a hosting company (data center) we can work with for many years, therfore it has to be a stable and reputable (maybe large) company/center.
how the hosting provider would back me up in setting up my vps, support in additional issues etc. with regards each of the above topics.
View 2 Replies View Relatedam using Godaddy right now, BIG MISTAKE, HUGE MISTAKE I should say.
Anyway, I need a very stable environment for my site. The main requirement is that it should be able to handle a vBulletin forum that has a good amount of traffic. My forum has about 5,000 members and about 150,000 posts since inception, not sure how many are using the forum concurrently, probably just a small fraction of the total population.
Does anyone know which company provides a GOOD and RELIABLE managed VPS or managed semi dedicated server?
I assume the hardware and softwares will be pretty much the same from company to company. Everybody seems to offer more or less the same configurations. So for me the deciding factor is SUPPORT. It appears that the term "MANAGED" server means different things to different companies.
Basically, I want a semi dedicated environment that works very much like the co-hosting environment that I now have at Godaddy or other hosting companies. I can understand how it operates without having to pay for a webmaster. I hope I can continue the same if I sign up for a managed VPS or managed semi dedicated server. That's my goal.
I do NOT know anything about managing a dedicated server and don't have time to learn. Definitely don't want to have to deal with constantly updating security patches, running daily backups, installing new software updates etc myself.
I read this forum and it seems that these ones are worth a try? Have I missed any other companies that are worth looking into?
Liquidweb
wiredtree
SLhost
solarvps
modvps
knownhost
Does anyone know who has the best and most comprehensive MANAGED service without costing a fortune?
I am considering moving to dedicated server, what are risks with self managed server compared to managed?
Managed servers are very expensive for my needs.
When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?
If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too
(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)
I'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.
( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)
Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:
-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.
- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.
- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:
- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.
I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.
ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".
I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.
My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.
I've always had hosting where everything is pretty much already setup. I am now considering getting my own dedicated server. I see most good packages are Self Managed Servers.
I'm not a system admin and never had any experience managing and setting up my own server. Is this a lot of work? Is this something that is also pretty easily learned or does this really take a lot of knowledge?
Any experience with Good Avocado and their reseller plan?
What about Thinkhost, good avocado is partnering with?
Wind and solar energy, it sounds all good, the reseller plan is awesome.
Any real life experience?
How can I make a domain and a subdomain points to different hosting accounts. For example
[url]-->host1
[url]-->host2
I want to make this through my resellerclub managed DNS service
We're starting a new video sharing project much like YouTube, so there will be lots of video conversation taking place, as well as high volume traffic on a website driven primarily by PHP and MySQL. It is very important that the company be able to host adult content.
We are looking for a managed VPS under $40. This is not a hard cap. We've been looking at EarthVPS but would like to check out more companies before making a decision. The price point that EarthVPS offers is relatively in the right spot. We are looking for comparable resources as well.
EarthVPS offers 50GB of space, 1000GB bandwidth for $35 a month. Keeping in mind cPanel is $12 more per month.
What is EarthVPS' reputation? Are there any other companies out there that offer a managed VPS service at around the same price point with roughly the same resources?
One of my sites needs a vps of its own... the hosts ive tried so far have not been very satisfying (uptime wise) but i will not list them because they had a 30day refund policy and that alone is enough to say thanks and a friendly goodbye.
What im looking for in a vps... (atleast)
-10gb filespace
-200gb bandwidth
-Managed
-Cpanel
-Unlimited domains/sqls (would be nice to add on some domains)
-Reasonable setup time
-Money back garuntee (not a must but id lean more towards hosts that offer)
-Reasonable uptime (i know 100% isnt possible.. least 80%?)
-Located near southern california is a plus
I think i nailed pretty much everything im looking for unless i forgot something.
Thanks for the recommends in advance!
My budgets about $50 by the way.. (can pay more depending on the host)
I'm having a little trouble with setting up DNS. I'm not sure if it's setup right, and it's acting slow the *first time* you connect (but normal until you reconnect again, wait 3 minutes).
3 domains at 000domains.com. 5 DNS each domain at dnsmadeeasy.com. Reseller plan with dedicated IP at polurnet.com.
- At dnsmadeeasy I enter the domain daemn.com and IP.
- At 000domains I register n1-ns5.daemn.com with my 5 DNS IPs.
- At 000domains I update daemn.com's DNS to n1-n5.daemn.com
- At 000domains I add A record with daemn.com's IP.
- At WHM I edit daemn.com's DNS to ns1-ns5.daemn.com
- At WHM I change daemn.com's A records ns1-ns5 to the 5 DNS IPs.
I repeated the same for the other 2 domains. Looks like they gave me the same DNS IP's for all 3 domains though.
On top of all that, I added subdomains in cPanel (which added A records for them) and they still haven't resolved (5ish hours). Didn't take this long before. I wonder if I need to add A records at 000domains too, or I did this all wrong.
I'm looking for Managed VPS in Europe (for example UK, can be DE but with english website and support) or ultimately in USA (DC in east coast) with DirectAdmin panel.
I need about 10-20 GB hdd, 60-80GB transfer/month. The company should be already several years on the market...
would like to move to a VPS plan, many has already mentioned that managing VPS is not easy in which it is kinda scary for me! but may I ask what are the main things that I need to know to manage a VPS host.
from my experience on a shared host with cpanel I know how to manage domains, subdomains, backups, traffic-analyze, mysql-databases, myphpadmin, ... etc.
Now if I get a VPS host with cpanel, do I need any extra experience to mange it? if so, what are they ...
Glowhost.com offers Managed Firewall on their dedicated servers.
How effective is this software?
What additional services do I get with a managed VPS account? Does it depend on the service provider?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI see some hosts provide fully managed VPS. If that's the case, what does that mean exactly? Does it mean the host manages updates and backups and that kind thing? what other maintenance does full managed VPS can provide besides updates and backups?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI need a managed vps with these software :

Tomcat: apache-tomcat-6.0.18
MySQL-Java Connector: mysql-connector-java-5[1].1.6

I have a java-based instant-messaging server application, which I need to host on a VPS.
This server application comes with its own Java Virtual Machine.
I do not need any other software than that, no web server, no database, no PHP, no multiple domains or whatever, because that stuff is hosted on another server
So I assume, I will just need an unmanaged VPS. Am I right or is there more to it?
Do I have to install and manage firewall and security on unmanaged VPS, or is that done by the provider?
What about monitoring? Any other issues I need to take into consideration?
Used Wiredtree for many years...excellent service.
Moved to VPSville...omg, much downtime headache.
Looking for another UK-based managed VPS provider using WHM and cPanel.
I am shopping around for managed colocation right now. My biggest thing is support and network reliability. Right now I have a server that's colocated but unmanaged. As my sites are becoming larger, they are becoming more prone to DDOS attacks and other server-related problems and, as of right now, I have nobody to help me when my server dies.
So, support and DDOS protection is very important. In sum, my criteria are:
24/7 support that will help me resolve all server related issues
Monitoring 24/7
DDOS protection
Good connectivity to: USA, Canada, UK, and (as a curveball) Australia (AU is least important though)
Only 1-2mbps uplink
Based on this, what managed colocation services would match me and my criteria?
