I just got a phone call yesterday because my house I just moved into came with a small peice of land about 3 miles away * no clue why* And a company wanted to rent it out for colocation. Is this a scam or should I do it? They said it would only hold 60 servers. The building on the land they would be renting already has backup generators emergency lights etc just no internet leading to it.
View 14 RepliesCurrently my company's websites are hosted on a dual xeon beast with 8 gigs of ram and two SaS raid 5 arrays(i think). The bottle neck occurs with our single T1 connection. Our traffic is using an average of 97% of that T1 24 hours a day. We're looking into adding another T1 at the price of $600 monthly (bandwidth is expensive in our rural area).
I'm wondering if moving to two less powerful dedicated machines (one for db and one for apache) in a datacenter would be a better use of our money. For instance, The Planet is offering a Intel Xeon 3040 1.8 GHz Dual Core server with 1gb of ram and cPanel (something we don't have but I would prefer to have) for $175/month. Two of those would be cheaper and free up bandwidth for user PC's in-house.
Has anyone ever heard of Random House hosting? Know anyone that is using them? Reviews?

1. To launch Virtuozzo based VPS hosting
2. To develop own VPs management software
I would ask you to tell me 2 things. What would you do, would you spend a month or 2 in developing VPS control panel or you'd start with Virtuozzo.
The other question is can you please post information about Virtuozzo pricing and dealers. The guys from Parallels didn't respond to email send before 48 hours. I'll give them a call but still want to know what do you think?
I'm trying to come up with a cheap , middle of the road, and high end set of solutions (list of equipment) for in-house hosting of video-casting / audio-casting on a site that can get big spikes of traffic at times. With some particular attention /consideration to the back-end, server requirements/needs. When or at what point does one need a a dedicated server for media? How much bandwidth is needed? how much traffic is a breaking point?

Requirements
* At least burstable to 10Mbit... dedi 10 is nice.. 100 is nicer..
* About 1000GB xfer should be good to start, I guess I can work with less
* Cheap IPs with no problems obtaining more
* Cheap remote hands since there's really not much in the RI/MA area. I will be going to school in upstate NY so I guess something around there would be cool too. I'm willing to ship anywhere though.
* Discounted/included DirectAdmin would be really nice...
* Not going to be selling IRCd stuff unless it's allowed and nice firewalls. I will probably only use it for a personal IRCd and irssi session.

This company seems too good to be true... they offer great services for great prices and have many good features. I also spoke to an admin who said he will be able to include a DirectAdmin license for free. They include 5 IPs right off the bat. I got about a reply in an hour at like midnight from Joe (or just another Joe) himself.. and I'm not even a customer! They do free reboots. $50 to colo our 2U with 1500GB and 100Mbit. It's 25 extra for unmetered w/10Mbit but I'm sure the admin would be willing to just offer more b/w staying at 100Mbit instead of moving to a 10Mbit port.

Great reputation.. Pretty good prices for what I would imagine to be quality service. Not much more I can say about them.. Did not ask them about DirectAdmin.
Conclusion
I think I'm mainly just looking for any input on Joe's Datacenter because I really think I want to start my company there. If anyone has any better offers I'm open to anything.. but DirectAdmin would be really nice... just remember that.
I'm also looking for a solution to HyperVM... LxLabs (to-be LxCenter I guess?) is now releasing it for free.. I'm not sure if it's patched yet or not though. I think I might just start with HyperVM for now since noone is going to target us.. seriously.. we are two kids with like 2 clients right now. We can always migrate later if HyperVM never takes off again.
What if i got a really good connection to this house i have in Sweden and bought some servers there, is it a good idea and would it sell? How hard is it to get a good connection, the house is in a fairly populated area of Sweden and i have partners who could help run it and do support 24 hours.
But its just a thought and we would start small. What do you guys think?

I am making some business plans and having an independent datacenter is one of them. Certainly it isn't easy as leasing a space, and buy some stuff. Some of the things I have to watch out for are network activity, getting bandwidth support, power supply, get an engineering company to design the facility and a lot of stuff.

totally fed up with the non-support at thePlanet, and I'm now investigating ded servers at another spot.
We are going to be moving our 10 Servers and various other equipment to a new facility here in Chicago. I have a few question I wanted to ask to backup my current thinking.
We are primarily a web host so all of out users either have their DNS set to our DNS server or they have a dedicated IP and an A record pointed to it. Currently we run a private NAT and have private IP's on the internal servers. The firewall handles the NAT'ing between the public and private IP's.
The primary question I have is if we change the IP address at our registrar for our DNS will the change still be subject to the 24-48 hours of propagation? Since we are not changing the NS records and only changing the IP's I would have to assume that his changeover should be fairly quick.
Two, im looking for the best way to setup our new cab are they any network admin photo gallery's?

I will obviously be speaking with a electrician, but I am just trying to get a idea. I need to figure out how many amps at 120V a certain size generator will put out. Starting at XKW/480V/3-Phase, how do I convert that down to XAMP/120V/Single-Phase. And what is the typical loss by stepping the power down with transformers and running through a large UPS.
2)I am looking at not putting raised floor in, what are the current methods being used to run AC power overhead. My biggest concern is interference with my Cat5E cables that would also run over head.
The one I found to be best was an 3Level reseller, Iland located in San Diego, but I find their prices to be a little expensive. We got quoted a 2U @ .5MPBS for $200 a month. We've actually decided on a 1U server, but for a 2U, we still found that to be expensive. If we cant find something here in SD, which is Local for 3 of the 4 business owners, it might be put in Amsterdam with our Developer, this way at least 1 of us can have easy access to it. In Amsterdam, their best colo will go for around $120 a month which has great access to all of US and EU.
