Addressing My Real Domain To Wamp

Apr 30, 2009

I have purchased a domain, and installed WAMP on my local computer. Now, I want to attach the domain name to WAMP such that when I entered my designed site on WAMP on my computer, I'll see my own domain instead of C://localhost/.../...

I have been told that the company that owns my domain should address its DNS to my own DNS?

Creating A Real Mail Using A Domain Name

Jun 8, 2008

i have just asked about it a local hosting copany and they show unable to understand what i was asking in the beginning and to give me a proper reply when they finally did.

What i want is to create several mail accounts using my domain names (several mail accounts for each domain name using it)

The usual answer is to use mail forwarding that every registrar offer for free when you register a domain name with them.

So you get a

free mail account
amail@gmail.com

domain name
adomain.com

and you create a forwarding such as

amail@adomain.com to amail@gmail.com

then you give amail@adomain.com so they can write to you using that fake mail, the message will bounce in your registrar and will send it to amail@gmail.com

but what if i want a real amail@adomain.com mail because i want to write replies from that address.

With mail forwarding as long as i know you can receive mail using the fake mail forwarding address but as mail is not a real one you then are forced to reply from the real account behing the forwarding one amail@gmail.com

Can i do that, is that a service included in hosting plans or somewhere. Or am i wrong and its simpler than that.

Addressing Matt's [comments] Against Xen

Jun 3, 2007

I would like properly address Matt Ayer's (WiseOne) continual claims that user created swap in xen can lead to disastrous situations. This doesn't make any sense from a Kernel point of view. Linux kernel treats Swap not as a additional memory, but as auxiliary storage, and will use it only sparingly. So a larger than ordinary swap has effectively zero impact on performance.

Quote:

I just don't have the time. Try this quick though. Create as many 64MB RAM Xen VPS's as you can, make a 1GB swap file inside each VPS, run a memory hogger, and then finally watch your system die due to horrific disk I/O. Not fun, I'll tell you that.

Conclusion: User controlled swap in a shared environment is a very, very, very bad thing.

Now let us assume there is a hostile user who is egregiously bent on creating excess disk I/O for the host and has purposefully hired vps to enact his revenge on the provider. Further assume that, for this nefarious purpose he has taken a 64MB xen and is running a full 1GB real memory allocated workload (To get create such a load itself would be difficult unless he writes his own programs to do this). Now note that, for the offending vps, the impact of the disk I/O is at the memory level, while the impact on the host is at the disk level. So very trivially, the vps would be so crippled to make it pretty much useless much before this starts having significant effect on the main server. And if engendering excess disk I/O is the sole purpose of user, then all he need to do is write a program to consecutively load and free all the files in the entire harddisk. This will create worse disk I/O than the convoluted method of using large swap. And the latter can be done on both virtuozzo and Xen--though I think in recent versions both have methods to throttle disk I/O.

The problem that UnixShell ran into with Xen was owing to their use of Snapshot, which is something that's prohibited, unless of course, you are running on a desktop with a single virtual machine. LVM snapshot will exactly double the disk I/O. The real problem that the usage is insidious and will not affect the actual vps that's leading to the excess load, but will affect the entire server as a whole.

Xen does have some drawbacks, but it can have all the important features which most providers here think are unique to virtuozzo.

Addressing VLANs On Extreme Summit 48

Feb 13, 2007

Having a slight problem working with one of our Extreme Summit 48 (ugh) switches - I've figured out most of the basics, but I can't seem to find any way to add a secondary IP address to a VLAN! This, I would have thought, would be a pretty basic feature to have. Typing "config vlan [vlanname] ipaddress 1.2.3.4/24" works for setting the primary IP, but I can't figure out how to add any more - and doing the command again just overwrites the first one.

So... does anyone have any tricks up their sleeve, or is this something that Extreme neglected to add to this model switch?

Aliasing, Or "what's The Real Domain Name?"

Oct 20, 2007

We've been working on aliasing issues over at our "sitetruth.com", which rates sites based on the business behind them. One key issue for us is finding the "real domain" of a web site. Is it "example.com", "www.example.com", or something like "us.example.com"?

Google has punted on this; they now expect webmasters to go to the "Google control panel" and designate the "real domain". We wanted something automatic.

Here's what we're currently doing: First, we get the "base domain" from the requested domain name. This is what you buy from a registrar. "example.com" and "example.co.uk" are base domain names.

We try to read a web page from the base domain. If that doesn't work, we put "www." in front of that, like a browser does. If that doesn't work, we try whatever domain name (not full URL) the user or search engine gave us as a starting point.

Once we can read a page, we check for redirects. If "example.com" redirects to "www.example.com", we'll treat "www.example.com" as the actual domain. Such redirects have to be within the same base domain; we don't follow inter-domain redirects, because they might be from a third party.

This gives us the "real domain". We then read any SSL certificate associated with that domain, and look through the site content for the name and address of the business. The object of all this is to get a business name and address, so we can start checking business records (licensing, credit, directory, etc.)

Domains like "foo.example.com" are treated as subdomains of "example.com", and share its rating. We have a mechanism for manually specifying that a subdomain needs to be treated as a separate domain, which we use on "redirector subdomains", like "r.aol.com" and "rds.yahoo.com". Redirector scripts are often exploited by phishing sites, so they can put your web site into PhishTank. We notice that and blacklist. (Unless you have an extremely good reason, don't put an "open redirector", a script that will redirect to any URL, on your web site. And if you do, give it its own subdomain. Otherwise, you'll end up being blamed for phishing and will be on various blacklists.)

This handles most of the common cases, but there are a few situations that we don't recognize. Most of these are bad web design.

A common error is to have an SSL certificate for "www.example.com", but a web site at "example.com" that doesn't redirect to "www.example.com". This inconsistency results in invalid SSL certificate usage. If your SSL cert is for "www.example.com", your "example.com" should have a redirect to "www.example.com". Otherwise, the user who types [url] gets an SSL warning of a phony site. You don't want that. We've seen this on a few big-name sites that should know better.

On a related note, wildcard SSL certificates for "*.example.com" don't
cover "example.com". It's possible to get an SSL cert that covers more than one domain, which is the right solution to some of these problems.

Incidentally, we ignore "domain control only" validated certificates. If there's no business identity in the cert, it's meaningless as an indicator of business legitimacy.

We had an amusing issue with "robots.txt" files. There are some sites that use a "robots.txt" file to disallow access to their "example.com" domain, so that search engines will index the "www.example.com" domain. They usually put a redirect on the "example.com" domain, so browsers also go to the "www.example.com" domain. "ibm.com" is set up that way. Originally, we read the "robots.txt" file for "example.com", saw we were locked out, and refused to rate the site. We now look at the header part of the page at "example.com" first, to check for a redirect, and once past the redirect issue, start obeying "robots.txt" before we read any site content.

For another adventure in redirection, try [url]. Yes, Microsoft redirects their "robots.txt" file.

Anyone know of any more special cases we need to handle?

WAMP On IIS

Nov 2, 2008

Can anyone point me to some decent instructions on how to get PHP/MySQL working on IIS? Basically I want to be able to use PHP + .NET at the same time. Been looking around and trying for awhile with no luck.

I know it's always better to get my hands dirty and install everything manually. However, I'm not confident about configuring it properly. So if anyone knows of a good WAMP installer that does everything painlessly it'll be great.

Reinstalling Wamp

Jul 5, 2009

I started learning how to use Magento's eCommerce solution, and I ran into a problem when I mistakenly changed the root pw for my phpMyAdmin area. After trying to find a fix online, it seemed like the best thing to do would be to reinstall WAMP. So I uninstalled it using Control Panel's 'Add or Remove Programs.' After reinstalling WAMP, I am having difficulty getting it to work properly.

When I try to launch Wamp (WampServer 2), I get an alert saying "Apache HTTP Server has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The message and the error signature are as follows:

But for some reason, the WAMP system try icon says that it's online (It shows a semicircle with 3/4 of it colored yellow.) However, when I try to connect to the localhost in my browser, I get the following message: Failed to Connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.

Using Wamp; Mysql Still Looking In C:xampp

Google led me to this article on the mysql forums, which worked up until it tried to initialize mysql (or whatever the command does, I'm guessing initialize). It's trying to look for the xampp folder that I had installed and uninstalled long before.

Code:
