Security Issue :: WAMP On Home PC Server Shutting Down?
Feb 18, 2008
Recently I started a website based on Joomla. My friends suggested me to start it with hosting it from Home based server. Website is not that busy. I get about 300 Unique Hits a day. My server is window xp based and i installed a bundle called WAMP2. Website was running fine but since last night my server got shut down all by itself. I checked temp log and everything was under 35. Then i checked my internet traffic and found out that there were 400+ connections from a SINGLE ip. This is the IP 213.130.118.112 and i tried to trace, whois blah blah and didnt find anything about it. I have no idea what to do as my server gets shut down after about 5 to 10 minutes. Please help me. Is it possible to stop this issue?.
Any security risks with setting up server on home network? I would like to set up a computer running linux or xp as a computer on our home network. We have about 3 other computers on the same network.
My network manager says that it would be a security risk to the other computers on the network if I were to have the server running on the network. The server would be connected to a netgear wireless router and I would have ports 80 and 21 opened just for the internal ip address of the server. (for example, the server is on 192.168.0.3, and I had just the two ports open for it, while there were computers on 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4).
The netgear router has a firewall built into it. Each of the other computers on the network have software firewalls. I would not have a firewall on the server, and I really don't care if someone hacks it. So, what at worst could happen? Would the other computers be at risk?
If you are a professional, I want your opinion also.
I had a problem with my server goind offline. When the data center checked on it - they found it powered down. (the only server on the strip that was powered down)
This also happened last month on February 14.
So.... I'm trying to find why it's shutting itself off. And wondering if the closeness of dates might be a clue....
I am having some wacky stuff going on with my server. I run a Godaddy v-ded and according to them, the server is fine.
What i'm experiencing is, some of my domains are not resolving, some are. For the ones that are working that run via a database, every few hours, I need to restart mysql(or the server) to get them running again.

I've set up WAMP on another PC on my home network. Works just fine for browsing via a web browser (i.e. displaying the web pages on the server). However, when I try to use FTP in Notepad++ I cannot establish a connection.
If I change the port to 80, I can get a connection. Change it back to 21 and no connection.
I tried switching off the firewall (inc windows firewall) on the server, and the anti-virus. Not made a difference.
I have just upgraded to Windows Vista Home Premium and am now looking for a WAMP installation whcih is compatible. Any ideas anyone. I used to use WAMP 5 and I knwo this is getting an update but I am in desperate of something similar for the time being.
i installed wampserver on my remote windows VPS.i opened port 80.after that i try to connect it by typing "h t t p : / / remotelink" on my local machine browser.but i can not connect.
I'm running a WAMP server, hosting an internal website for my company's use.
Windows XP Home SP3 Apache 2.0 MySQL Server 5.5 PHP 5.?
Last night Microsoft Security Essentials froze while running a scan. I restarted the scan and it froze again, so I rebooted the server. Now Apache won't start, providing the following error ....

that is my error message I have changed skype's port from using port 80 and also uninstalled IIS from microsoft I have only installed xampp on its own without wamp server so that they dont conflict.
I use rfxnetworks.com/sim.php on my cpanel server and it all worked fine until the last week where each morning 6am GMT I get a status warning telling me that XINET was down and that it had to restart it.
Has something changed? Is there now something weird about XINETD and cpanel? My cpanel is stable and set to automatically update.
In fact it looks like something ALWAYS shuts it down and then SIM restarts it looking at a section of messages:-
I understand the risks of not using a datacenter, but for a smallish site to which uptime isn't key, is it possible to get server-quality bandwidth to my house? (No I don't mean like Gigabit, I mean like upwards of 5mbps)? I'd really like to maintain my own server (probably build one).
I live in Milwaukee, so colocation is, AFAIK, out. And while I can save up for and buy a computer every few years, I cannot sustain $80/month. (I am a middle school student. My income isn't exactly regular.)
So the question... can I get an ISP to let me run a server at decent speeds out of my house? Would its costs exceed colocation or that of a dedicated server?
I have a spare machine which is fairly fast, i like to know what are the steps to make a web server from home that actually works well, i have a static IP and a fast internet too.
Which operating system works better and any guide to a step by step setup.
I'm just wondering what the practicalities and problems might be in setting up a web server from home. At the moment we have a 2Mb cable connection but our provider offers a 20Mb connection.
Would it be possible to set up a small hosting business from home with such a connection?
I am currently leasing a VPS and the kbps upload rate is below my upload rate at home, so I am going to save 50 bucks/ month and move it to home.
I plan on using an older dell desktop with 512mb ram. I would like to use this also as sorta a sync host between my laptop and desktop. I would like to be able to sync certain folders and files which would be stored on the server. I also obviously need to have ftp access, smtp (no knowledge of this area), mysql, php, etc. My big question is which OS should I use? I have fiddled around had a local copy of my site working on my main desktop in windows using apache. Should I stick with windows or would I be better served using a linux distro such as ubuntu? I currently have a static IP address at home. How do I handle the nameservers?
Another thing is how easily can I manage things like emails and subdomains?
So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far.
He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+.
I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit.
I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!
I wanna host my website from home. But i dont know to much about it.Can you help me or give me some link where i can find Guides?Im using Uniform Server btw...but i dont know what next? Main goal for me is to setup server,,and i need definitive guide!
I have installed Apache, PHP and MySQL cus they are |33t.
I am using free dns.. the domain name is PowerfulPlacement.com
localhost WORKS
PowerfulPlacement.com does not work... Here is my VirtualHost in my httpd.conf..
NameVirtualHost 72.219.185.53 <VirtualHost 72.219.185.53:80> ServerName powerfulplacement.com ServerPath D:/www DocumentRoot "D:/www/" <directory D:/www/> allow from all </directory> </VirtualHost>
I dont know why powerfulplacement.com isn't working. I remember in linux I had to start up named or dns or something for it to work but I'm not quit sure with Windows.
In the future I'm thinking of running a web server from my residential house.
I currently have rogers cable , but they do not allow you to run a server from their residential internet connection.
Does anyone run a server from their house? What kind of internet connection do you have?
I'm guessing most people don't do this because they find out it cost way to much to get a special connection ran to their house. Colocation might be the only way to go.
im going to be setting up a basic linux server in my home to host a small family website, i plan to use centos or debian, but was wondering what other things would i need to get my server online,
Ive recently inherited a decent desktop pc and am wondering if its feasable to run it as a web server from my home to serve pages from a few small websites. I know some about setting up a web server with linux and think i could get it going in theory but am wondering if a home pc setup would be reliable enough in this situation....?
