Who Offers KVM With Virtual Media?
Jun 5, 2008
I use Virtuozzo with layeredtech, and since I'm on the move anyway, thought I'd like to try out some different Virtualization products before the migration.
Allot of these products like bare-metal installs though... which is why I'm particularly looking for "virtual media" on the KVM.

how's media temple these days?
In particular the grid service.
Does their service stay up? How often is it down? I heard a lot of horror stories back in the day, and went with another provider.
Sadly, my current provider has had a string of downtime each day and I'm looking to switch.
Before I go with another provider, i want to make sure that MT's grid service is good.
And how it would compare with their dedicated virtual service.
Especially when you consider their dedicated virtual service compared to the gs with a mysql container.

If i had a server i would much pefer that the center had a forum
community and live support to help when and if you're unsure.
I guess that would be an extra managed service with most providers
I couldn't handle if i had a prob and i had to wait on forum replys
A good deal on a dedicated while good support is allways available.
Someone that offers unmetered monthly bandwidth packages.

There is a new page on Rackspace's website where they are offering to match the price of any hosting company that sells the same package of specifications. It sounds like there will be no compromise on the standards of service included in the deal.

I have been looking at the offers in the Web Hosting Talk->Advertising Forums->Web Hosting Offers->Dedicated Hosting Offers forum and I cannot find any explanation for the transfer value.
When an advertiser says 10Tb Transfer (ignore case, as I've seen an advert where it is 10TB in the subject and 10Tb in the body)
Anyway, my question, is the 10Tb in bits or bytes (cannot determine from the case, already established inconsistencies here)
Also, over what period of time is the 10T bits/bytes, E.G. is is that amount of data per day, week, month, year etc.

the original domain registrar itself finally joins the VPS fray. Just saw this on their website:
[url]
After roughly a year or so (I think) of offering the hosting we all know, looks like they've finally decided it's time to take the next step.
(to think I'll be moving my domain name away from them next month...)

know a hosting company with a plan or an option to have access to unlimited IP address?
Or at least near it, like new 20 IP's/month would be ok i think
No matter if its shared hosting, vps or dedicated, if you know a company that offers it,

why so few shared hosting companies enable a php op-caching system on their system (xcache, apc, eaccelerator).
Is there some specific technical reason in place?
Usually I run my own servers, but it happens from time to time that you need a quality shared hosting in order to reccomend it to a friend, for a personal blog, a small website, maybe your own personal blog that you're not keen to host on your dedicated servers already used for big projects ...
Now, as everyone using php applications knows, software like xcache or eaccelerator gives a nice speed bost to page generation. I run xcache on all my servers and vps (mainly running vbullettin and wordpress) and never encountered any issue.
Installing one of those (eg. xcache) is a 5minutes procedure, and even for kiddie-hosting companies that won't know how to build php, the ability to compile eaccelerator is in the cpanel easy php build software, so you don't even need to know how to rebuild php to enable eaccelerator in cpanel.
Despite all these facts is quite impossible to find a decent webhoster with xcache or apc/eacc enabled ...
The only one claiming to have eaccelerator is medialayer : "# Zend Optimizer, IonCube, and eAccelerator" this is a quote from their website.
How come nobody else undertakes this step?
What I have been noticing is most premium shared-hosting provider I encountered run their server with a lot of free memory .. so why not impress the customer with blazing fast page generation times (wordpress footer displaying "page generated in 0.071 seconds" impresses also the non-technical savy customers) enabling such a simple feature ?
There should be something I am missing, for sure.

I'm an existing customer of Hosting Company X and notice that they have recently launched an offer that is a higher config than what I have right now, at the same price.
When asked about it, I was refused the higher config citing that new offers are not applicable for existing customers. I've been with them for over a year and have been experiencing very good support from them, but this one issue baffles me.
Why are existing customers less important?

I know Hostgator has a special SEO hosting package that includes seperate ip's and such but I had a bad experience with them a couple of years back.
Can anyone that hosts multiple sites on multiple ip's (different class 'c') tell me about their hosting packages (prices, bandwidth, supports, downtime, etc...)

I don't need much space a GB would be more then enough as what I'm backing up is only about 250mb currently.
Does anyone know of a good company that offers FTP backup space for a real low price.

I was just wondering if anyone else here uses or has used VPS Media?
I have been with them since Monday and running a Counter-Strike server. So far my experience has been positive. My VPS was up and running within minutes of signing up and they were not hesitant to help me prepare it for CS server.
Now I'm thinking about buying another VPS from them for a web server but I cant decide which distro to pick. I'm familiar with CentOS, is Debian or Fedora much different for running a web server?

Hopefully this will be a quick and fairly simple question. I already have my site hosted with another provider and very, very happy with the service.
However, i want to add video support to my site. However the current provider i use doesnt have the functionality i need (FFMPeg, etc).
So what i am looking for is a reliable host who will store, convert/encode my files and then stream them for a decent prices. As it will be a new feature to my site im not looking at spending a fortune to start with (i know, how many times have you heard that?) but will be happy to upgrade capacity as and when.
Im not interested in fancy cPanels or bogged down features for "Web Hosting" which i will never use. I just need a host that can store, encode and stream my media (i will handle the scripting side. Ideally they would be located within Europe, but thats not 100% nessesary.

Where can I set default index file for MediaTemple? I need to change it to index.php instead of the index.html.
Please don't redirect me to MT support, they are too slow.

Don't have much experience with dedicated servers, Just wanted your opinions on this.
Quote:
100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #1
CPU - Pentium E5200 (dual core)
Memory - 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space - 300GB HDD
According to the package, it's " 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server "
I plan on hosting only media, (video files). Are these specs enough to support alot of people downloading?
Also, I've never setup this sort of server before - when I go to click on order now it asks me certain preferances.
Quote:
Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel
There is quite a few options to choose from the drop down menu, I have no idea what they mean.
With dedicated server's is it the same as normal vps? Login, upload, Cpanel etc?
Or is there something else to it?
Just need to host media - nothing special.

I manage and develop an e-commerce site which the original designer had put on Media Temple. Their grid service and general marketing looks and sounds superb. This is no doubt why a lot of people go with them.
For months now they have been giving my client problems. People in certain places can't access the site because MT are always up to tricks moving the servers around. On top of that their MySQL performance has latency issues which makes most pages load slowly.
I decided to move the site to Knownhost(vps) who seem to offer good service at a reasonable price.
Before I could even begin to transfer the emails to the new server I get reports that the site has been down for over 24 hours. The site is still down after a whole day. This means my client can't sell their stuff and I can't transfer to the new host either.
I called MT and they offered free hosting for a year. I don't think it's worth it. The uptime and service and performance I've seen has been no better than $5/month shared hosting. For a site like this I don't think it's worth risking uptime (and therefore sales) on a company that can't get their act together. I've never had downtime from any other host before, let alone multiple times like MT.
I'm putting this out there just to warn any people who may be thinking of going to Media Temple.
I would be interested to know others experiences with Media Temple.

I'm really enjoying all the helpful topics that this website has to offer . However, I've still been having trouble deciding on a web host.
I'm planning to make a website that will consist of all different forms of media, (video, audio, photos) and I wanted to know if there were any web hosts out there that specialize in that sort of thing?
Also, I wanted to know if Wordpress was a good choice for someone like me who doesn't have a whole lot of website building skill but wants to make a decent looking site.

my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost.
now...I'm unemployed; & money is real tight...so, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's.
So:
1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server?
2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)?
3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if so...how is that implemented?
I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

I found vps media through WHT about a month ago, I saw they allowed several gaming servers on their vpses, and it was interesting to give a CS 1.6 and CS Source a try on a vps.
I signed up using a 20% off special, which is pretty cheap, compared to other xen providers.
I've been really happy with their service, as they are very easy to communicate with, and I love their notifications whenever a scheduled maintenance is due.
Their community is still small, but they're growing little by little, I saw a big spike of people registered in their forums right after a new WHT offer post. Their blog is current, well written and specially good content, mostly just news about their service, but always interesting in reading them.

we recently launched a site that has a you-tubeish clone to it, none the less the media progressive download bottlenecks the the rest of the sites functions beyond video...
I've been looking into solutions with moving the files elsewhere.
I was looking at Lime Light Networks but they were $1/gig, granted i'm sure their service is great but we're currently moving 3tb and have been going up around 500gb every month. So we really can't afford that.
I just stumbled on Amazon S3 and that looks real attractive, has anybody used their services or know of a site that does that I could test it out.
And the last stupid question, I'm trying to figure out how it works, they make it sound like all you have to do is put a CNAME in your zone, but I need the video clips to be put there as they're uploaded...

I have most of my sites on the very reliable clook.co.uk but I only only get around a Gig of bandwidth per month per site.
I'm thinking of getting an unlimited hosting package so I could upload client's music files, large images, video clips etc.. Nothing is illegal or adult. Then I could host my sites as normal at Clook and then point to all the very large files being hosted at the new place.
I think I'd get about 10Gig of traffic max a month. And as it'll just be an extended online harddrive I've no real need for databases, email, php, cPanel etc...
I've seen some unlimited offers at hostpapa.co.uk for 4.99 a month with a free domain. Is there a catch? What do you recommend?
