Windows Media Relays
Mar 18, 2008
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a Windows Media Relay. For example, if I have two streams with two different companies. Once stream A is filled up then it will forward to stream B. Or even distribute or just randomly to stream A or B.
I have searched and searched, but nothing seems to work.

I was actually curious about this since Windows 2008 version came out.
What is the difference between Windows media services on Windows 2003 and Windows 2008?

my Hosting service (Hostway) offered Windows Media Server at the time. I wanted visitors to have the ability to quickly stream .wma's, so I went for the cost.
now...I'm unemployed; & money is real tight...so, I was thinking of dropping Hostway...going over to GoDaddy; & switching my means of musical delivery to .mp3's.
So:
1) How much slower is mp3 streaming from a conventional server than .wma from a dedicated server?
2) Is there a way to speed it (mp3) up (save decreasing file size)?
3) Will .wma's stream without the dedicated server; & if so...how is that implemented?
I really need to save money in this economy...but I don't want my listeners to suffer. Is that possible?

companies offering a managed server for streaming windows media video files.
they are about 400kb/s and streaming to about 100 people at once.
storage space is about 80gb and bandwidth of 2000gb/month
server must be fully managed and the files are archived, I do NOT need live streaming

I just took my first steps into Windows Media Services but I have some problems with the buffering of the stream.
I send from Expression Encoder 2 SP1 to my publishing point on my Windows Media Server.
But when the quality of the video is too high, I get some buffering problems when I'm watching the streamed video with my Windows Media Player. After looking 5 seconds to the stream, the windows media player stops with playing and in the left bottom corner I see the text "buffering". After 3 seconds buffering, the player goes further for a next of 5 seconds of playing and it continously does this.

Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.

I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?

I was just wondering if anyone else here uses or has used VPS Media?
I have been with them since Monday and running a Counter-Strike server. So far my experience has been positive. My VPS was up and running within minutes of signing up and they were not hesitant to help me prepare it for CS server.
Now I'm thinking about buying another VPS from them for a web server but I cant decide which distro to pick. I'm familiar with CentOS, is Debian or Fedora much different for running a web server?

Hopefully this will be a quick and fairly simple question. I already have my site hosted with another provider and very, very happy with the service.
However, i want to add video support to my site. However the current provider i use doesnt have the functionality i need (FFMPeg, etc).
So what i am looking for is a reliable host who will store, convert/encode my files and then stream them for a decent prices. As it will be a new feature to my site im not looking at spending a fortune to start with (i know, how many times have you heard that?) but will be happy to upgrade capacity as and when.
Im not interested in fancy cPanels or bogged down features for "Web Hosting" which i will never use. I just need a host that can store, encode and stream my media (i will handle the scripting side. Ideally they would be located within Europe, but thats not 100% nessesary.

Where can I set default index file for MediaTemple? I need to change it to index.php instead of the index.html.
Please don't redirect me to MT support, they are too slow.

Allot of these products like bare-metal installs though... which is why I'm particularly looking for "virtual media" on the KVM.

Don't have much experience with dedicated servers, Just wanted your opinions on this.
Quote:
100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server #1
CPU - Pentium E5200 (dual core)
Memory - 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space - 300GB HDD
According to the package, it's " 100Mbit Burstable Unmetered Dedicated Server "
I plan on hosting only media, (video files). Are these specs enough to support alot of people downloading?
Also, I've never setup this sort of server before - when I go to click on order now it asks me certain preferances.
Quote:
Raid Controller, OS version, Operating system, Control Panel
There is quite a few options to choose from the drop down menu, I have no idea what they mean.
With dedicated server's is it the same as normal vps? Login, upload, Cpanel etc?
Or is there something else to it?
Just need to host media - nothing special.

I manage and develop an e-commerce site which the original designer had put on Media Temple. Their grid service and general marketing looks and sounds superb. This is no doubt why a lot of people go with them.
For months now they have been giving my client problems. People in certain places can't access the site because MT are always up to tricks moving the servers around. On top of that their MySQL performance has latency issues which makes most pages load slowly.
I decided to move the site to Knownhost(vps) who seem to offer good service at a reasonable price.
Before I could even begin to transfer the emails to the new server I get reports that the site has been down for over 24 hours. The site is still down after a whole day. This means my client can't sell their stuff and I can't transfer to the new host either.
I called MT and they offered free hosting for a year. I don't think it's worth it. The uptime and service and performance I've seen has been no better than $5/month shared hosting. For a site like this I don't think it's worth risking uptime (and therefore sales) on a company that can't get their act together. I've never had downtime from any other host before, let alone multiple times like MT.
I'm putting this out there just to warn any people who may be thinking of going to Media Temple.
I would be interested to know others experiences with Media Temple.

I'm really enjoying all the helpful topics that this website has to offer . However, I've still been having trouble deciding on a web host.
I'm planning to make a website that will consist of all different forms of media, (video, audio, photos) and I wanted to know if there were any web hosts out there that specialize in that sort of thing?
Also, I wanted to know if Wordpress was a good choice for someone like me who doesn't have a whole lot of website building skill but wants to make a decent looking site.

I found vps media through WHT about a month ago, I saw they allowed several gaming servers on their vpses, and it was interesting to give a CS 1.6 and CS Source a try on a vps.
I signed up using a 20% off special, which is pretty cheap, compared to other xen providers.
I've been really happy with their service, as they are very easy to communicate with, and I love their notifications whenever a scheduled maintenance is due.
Their community is still small, but they're growing little by little, I saw a big spike of people registered in their forums right after a new WHT offer post. Their blog is current, well written and specially good content, mostly just news about their service, but always interesting in reading them.

we recently launched a site that has a you-tubeish clone to it, none the less the media progressive download bottlenecks the the rest of the sites functions beyond video...
I've been looking into solutions with moving the files elsewhere.
I was looking at Lime Light Networks but they were $1/gig, granted i'm sure their service is great but we're currently moving 3tb and have been going up around 500gb every month. So we really can't afford that.
I just stumbled on Amazon S3 and that looks real attractive, has anybody used their services or know of a site that does that I could test it out.
And the last stupid question, I'm trying to figure out how it works, they make it sound like all you have to do is put a CNAME in your zone, but I need the video clips to be put there as they're uploaded...
