What Kind Of Harddrive Read And Writes Speeds Should Be Expected
May 15, 2007
I have a windows 2003 VPS and I'm not satisfied with the HD I/O speed, and before I mention what speeds I am getting I just want to see what people say should be plausible. I want to know if I am thinking I should get more out of the VPS then I really should.
Anyway, I used this program from ATTO to benchmark:
short-media.com/download.php?d=108
Called ATTO Disk Benchmark
If anyone is willing, run it on your VPS and post a screenshot. It's a standalone .exe, no install needed.

I tried setting up my web server with the user's home directories as a NFS and everything seemed to be working except for one thing I found. When I used php write which I have a couple scripts that do, it can't use fopen with the option "w" which means to trunicate the length to 0 and point at the beginning of the file.
It allows me to use "a" which just writes at the bottom of the file. This is weird because when I login to shell I can delete the files, edit the files, and make files.
It gives me this error....[function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Operation not permitted
httpd 2.0.59, php 4.4.6, userspace nfs, using no_root_squash,sync,no_all_squash,rw in the exports.

I saw a thread on DSLReports.com about the great prices on their vps's I mean typically you find something like 10gb of space for 30 dollars a month just way too much.
PhotonVPS offered 20gb of space 500gb bandwidth for $10.95. This was my first VPS purchase.
I signed up Tuesday night (9/8/09) about 8:30pm cst. I selected their "Beam 1" option and then added C-Panel and Factisco for an extra 13.50 a month.
First thing their payment system, I paid for 3 months $29 but I had to make a separate payment of 13.50 which was annoying when the receipt said I paid $43.50. But I paid both and then anxiously waited for my vps to be setup.
It took 21 hours from payment to have my username and password so I could login to my VPS. A trouble ticket I had put in at about 18 hours after order took 3 hours to be responded too.
What bugs me is on the Thread I read it claimed "Instant setup" and on their website they claim "24/7" support. I read all the reviews from WHT and they seemed good.
Now I have my VPS setup and running great. But still problems, Fluid VM is their VPS Managment tool, My username and password doesn't work I put in a ticket I'm being told "that it hasn't been finalized" several hours later I try again still doesn't work I put in another ticket I'm then told "Fluid VM has a bug and they closed it" I tried today and still can't login.
So I can't monitor, rebuilt or do anything with my node from the web.
Also last night I put a ticket in about my Fantastico license not being installed. I got a prompt reply but still hasn't been dealt with.
I don't know if I'm expecting too much I'm not trying to be a jerk but I paid $43 I know in overall cost its chump change but if I pay for something I expect what the company sells is what I get.
Honestly I think this is a one man operation, there is no phone number tickets are being closed without resolving problems and its taking ages on other things.
All the reviews gave these guys good marks noting how quick and fast they were but so far I've experienced nothing but slowness and I'm frustrated. I wouldn't be so frustrated but they claim stuff that I'm just not seeing.
So if anyone from PhotonVPS reads this please look into my issues I'm tired of waiting I'm tired of playing games 21 hours to setup a VPS seems very excessive not having my management panel.

I'm running into a problem with a relatively new (2 months old) server. I have just a few accounts on it, and I'm already noticing unusual loads, for the... load. After some benchmarking with bonnie++ (and plain old "dd") there is clearly a problem.
Version 1.03b ------Sequential Output------ --Sequential Input- --Random-
-Per Chr- --Block-- -Rewrite- -Per Chr- --Block-- --Seeks--
Machine Size K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP /sec %CP
SERVER NAME 2G 9096 16 7725 2 2543 0 20609 32 621627 55 +++++ +++
Isn't a write-speed over 7MB/s reasonable to expect? Also look at the low CPU times...
Anyway running the same test on a similar but older AND busier server showed much better results than this. In fact dd'ing a 1GB file from /dev/zero "finished" in about 10 seconds but then pegged the server at 99% iowait (wa) for a full three minutes (until done being written from cache I assume), bringing load to 15.00
That's all the info I have so far... the data center just replaced the card (which gave no errors) with no effect. Running these benchmark tests is about the extend of my hardware experience.

During my poking around performance tips I found the DELAY_KEY_WRITE option (and innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 0 for innodb)
which supposedly for mysql will disable the immediate disk flush for every transaction written and instead update only once every second at most?
One thing I've never had to restart on my vps is mysql, it's been great. So is this safe to turn on? Am I risking corruption? Will the performance gain be worth it with only a 16M cache?

I have a FreeBSD system with cPanel on it, and the harddrive has failed.
It keeps saying there is an incorrect superblock, and it can't mount the drives.
Both the datacenter technicians and myself can't seem to get it to mount, and we need to recover the information. fsck fails, continiously.
The irony here is that the backup harddrive on the secondary server blew up a few weeks ago, and while I thought it was backing up to another account it apparently hasn't been.

about a server of mine that went down recently. Its a RAID10- 8hdd setup and there seems to be a hdd that died (at least according to host) and the OS is not loading. I am a newbie to servers and am curious if data will be lost (which I hope not) and what procedures are taken in the event a drive fails in a RAID setup.
A couple more specific questions, based on notes from DC
- What if fsck is being run on the failed RAID drive?
- What happened if the OS doesnt load from raid10 (8 drives) anymore?
- One partition only showed up as 3mb large when knopix was run
I am still waiting from the support at the DC (been 4 days wait), so just wanted to get some insight from others who might have went thru a similar situation.

I have some customers who use a VPN to connect to the internet securely. (They live in a restricted country.)
So when they connect to the VPN, it gives them a new IP, and when they go to "whatismyip.com" it shows the IP of the VPN server, as expected.
The problem is that sometimes their IP changes back to their local ISP without any indication. The VPN still appears to work (green lights are displayed in the VPN icon in the sytem tray), but their IP is now the local ISP providers, which means they are not fully "protected" any more.
And that is bad.
So, what I'm thinking is to find a Windows program or script or something that runs every x minutes.. and checks to see what is the current IP. If it isn't as expected (the VPN server's IP), then a big red warning window would start flashing on the screen, so they can then reboot or restart the VPN.
Does anyone know of such a program?
(BTW - they are using openVPN, latest version. And yes -- it works properly 99% of the time.. but for some reason the IP just changes back to local ISP for no apparent reason. The log does not show any errors or helpful indicators.)

I am a customer of Yahoo Small Business unlimited hosting. I am running Joomla (CMS) with jreviews which uses PHP and MySQL. I now need to expand my review and rating website to earn some profits. According to my business plan, I would need atleast a 1000-2000 unique visitors a day to actually earn off the website to afford a VPS. My question is, can Yahoo Small Business "Unlimited" hosting plan sustain that number under the usage of Joomla? I have been trying to find an answer to this for a long long time but to no avail. I know that "unlimited" is actually a marketing tactic and that one must move to VPS or Dedicated servers for serious traffic. But I cannot move to a VPS before I earn something from the website initially due to lack of funds. Can I expect to be tension free till the range of 1000-2000 uniques/day?

What kind of spec would I need for serving direct/hotlinking 100mb+ files? I've looked all over the place but couldn't find anything.
And let say a sudden spike of 400+ people and they are downloading a file [url]simultaneously that is 100mb+ in size.
How much ram would I require?

I'm just posting a little topic here to see what kind of demand numbers and opinions I might get for the Hybrid VPS industry. Hybrid as in semi-dedicated, being packages like 2GB ram, 25% guaranteed processor, etc. "Semi Dedicated" if you will. I've been considering opening up a sub-company of GeekLayer for a few weeks now that sold fully managed xen virtual private server "hybrids", although be it with a slight twist.

I am planning to set up a VPN server for a group of about 4 people who will use it as an "internet proxy" for *all* their internet connectivity. (They live in a country where internet activity is severely restricted (and monitored), and I think a VPN would be a good solution for them.)
However, I have no idea what kind of processing power or system resources are needed for this kind of situation. Is a simple VPS ok? How much memory would be good? How about server speed?
The server will be linux (probably CentOS) and will use OpenVPN.
I'm thinking that there probably doesn't need to be a whole lot of raw CPU power or RAM, but maybe I'm wrong?

My question is that i have a few sites being developed right now. 3-4 to be exact, can i host them all on the same package? i want each to not be a sub of anything. What do i do? Calling tech support yielded worthless answers. Do i need a different type of account?

I had a pretty hectic week dealing with these 3 customers with ddos problems and got to try a few different ddos datacenters for each of them.
First I got these two anime sites, I put them on mine and a friends staminus box as soon as their dns resolved 1000s of ips came through sending syn on port 80, it would just knock port 80 out filling up contrack table, etc. Id ban a few hundred ips and some ranges 100s more would come. In the bandwidth it only shows about 200kbs incoming as well.
We had put in an emergency ticket with staminus and was told bascially we are idiots and that only 4 packets per second were coming into the server, I was looking at the tcpdump and the kernel was dropping 10-20 thousand packets a second just from the ips id banned.
So after a day or two of this of saying we didnt have an attack I moved them to a gigeservers vps I got from funtoosh at sh3lls.net As soon as I moved the sites over there it stopped dead so giges filters automatically picked it up. So either staminus doesnt protect against that type or what. It seemed like a a regular syn flood.
So for customer 3, this person has had numerous problems dealing with ddos. He says that the attacker has this tool that exploits the verlisign dc++ hub, that it takes over and has every user send ddos to the server of their choice.
he had been on sharktech a few months per my reccomendation, he said they could not stop the attacks. he came to me said this was his last resort, so I said well surely staminus would stop it. As soon as his dns resolved on staminus server it got destroyed, nothing got filtered, couldnt even login the box. I didnt have access to staminus portal so I couldnt file a ticket, I had went in their irc again and could not get them to nullroute the ip, understandable since I didnt have access to the ticket system. So I immediatly deleted his dns and the attacks came for up to 12 hours hitting the ip he used to be on.
Id ban thosands , entire /8 ranges and it would just reload and start hitting again.
These syn floods sent very little data at slow intervals so i see why it was so hard to filter.
SO then I move him to gigeservers vps, his site is now up 12 hours, in netstat you would see teh occasional ip coming in and sending syn then closing connection so I thought it had it filtered. We was celebrating, as soon as we did I relaized I put my foot in my mouth as the attacks started full scale there. Nothing i really could do software wise as the vps kept running out of memory So I just had funtoosh remove the ip.
My client the victim was hanging out in their dc++ hub at zerohour.mafiahub.net and pasting ne the logs translating from romanian on how they commanded the attacks. But supposedly they can connect to any dc++ hub and use this tool to take it over and have every user on the hub send ddos. The tool and exploit they are using is private thank god so it seems only a few romanian hacking groups have this.
This kind of attack could not be filtered at sharktech, staminus, or gigeservers I had tried it on softlayer first, had them add it to ddos guard, it knocked Both my servers offline that was on same subnet. It sends very small packets and slow intervals, there is absolutely nothing you can do software wise.
Just giving everyone a heads up on what kind of methods are being used. If someone does think their hosting can block these attacks via hardware or software id be more then happy to give you the customers name, and they do not care to pay as long as the attacks can be filtered.

I using RHES 4 + cPanel.
I have MySQL 5.x, and PHP 4.4.6.
I noticed that all sites on the server, can not parse php files, tried restarting httpd, recompiling using apache update or easyapache script, and the problem stills.
index.php is at DirectoryIndex, also Addtype shows php extension active at httpd.conf.
but, when I type "php -v" from the shell, i got this message:
Code:
php: /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.14: version `libmysqlclient_14' not found (required by php)
I found someone with the same problem, tested the solution posted there but it doesnt seems to solve this issue.

I have a dedicated that is oversized for the task (Q6600, 8gig RAM, Sata Raid-10 array), which is running a medium/small vBulletin site.
I have thought about providing free image hosting for the members, so I could have 100-300 people hosting sig images and other graphics on the server, which they in turn would link into forums and other places which could create quite a few requests for those graphics.
Is there anyway to quantify what type of load this static, image hosting would create?
The server currently is typically around .05 to .1 server load with nearly flatlined CPU's.
