PhotonVPS - I Think I Expected Way To Much
Sep 10, 2009
I saw a thread on DSLReports.com about the great prices on their vps's I mean typically you find something like 10gb of space for 30 dollars a month just way too much.
PhotonVPS offered 20gb of space 500gb bandwidth for $10.95. This was my first VPS purchase.
I signed up Tuesday night (9/8/09) about 8:30pm cst. I selected their "Beam 1" option and then added C-Panel and Factisco for an extra 13.50 a month.
First thing their payment system, I paid for 3 months $29 but I had to make a separate payment of 13.50 which was annoying when the receipt said I paid $43.50. But I paid both and then anxiously waited for my vps to be setup.
It took 21 hours from payment to have my username and password so I could login to my VPS. A trouble ticket I had put in at about 18 hours after order took 3 hours to be responded too.
What bugs me is on the Thread I read it claimed "Instant setup" and on their website they claim "24/7" support. I read all the reviews from WHT and they seemed good.
Now I have my VPS setup and running great. But still problems, Fluid VM is their VPS Managment tool, My username and password doesn't work I put in a ticket I'm being told "that it hasn't been finalized" several hours later I try again still doesn't work I put in another ticket I'm then told "Fluid VM has a bug and they closed it" I tried today and still can't login.
So I can't monitor, rebuilt or do anything with my node from the web.
Also last night I put a ticket in about my Fantastico license not being installed. I got a prompt reply but still hasn't been dealt with.
I don't know if I'm expecting too much I'm not trying to be a jerk but I paid $43 I know in overall cost its chump change but if I pay for something I expect what the company sells is what I get.
Honestly I think this is a one man operation, there is no phone number tickets are being closed without resolving problems and its taking ages on other things.
All the reviews gave these guys good marks noting how quick and fast they were but so far I've experienced nothing but slowness and I'm frustrated. I wouldn't be so frustrated but they claim stuff that I'm just not seeing.
So if anyone from PhotonVPS reads this please look into my issues I'm tired of waiting I'm tired of playing games 21 hours to setup a VPS seems very excessive not having my management panel.

Nut really this is the very first time I hear of the host, and I need to know If anybody has experience or knows someting if this provider, to help me making a decision.

I just emailed PhotonVPS requesting a phone call for pre-saales questions because I am handicapped and have a defficult time typing.
Jimmy Lu, Director of operations, emailed me back saying that he would not provide phone support.
Looks like he's of the short list of providers I have.

just my old login was deactivated because I haven't been back in awhile. Since that was the case I was just lurking around
Anyway, I have been using dedicated linux servers for about 11 years now and decided to try a windows server. I searched around WHT for awhile and found PhotonVPS. Price was good, and only a couple reviews, why not try them. So far I'm far from impressed.
Day 1 10/16 about 6PM. Ordered Windows VPS. Received emails with various information, including my payment being processed, my login/pw, an order number, and an invoice. Granted all of that could have went in one email but it's nice to see their billing is set up correctly.
Day 2 10/17 (my birthday too btw ) I check my Email seeing that everything was setup. Awesome. I go to login via RDC. I put in the IP, go to connect, wait about 30 seconds and BAM "This computer can't connect to the remote computer." Ok, let's ping the IP.
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 194ms, Maximum = 3411ms, Average = 1865ms
Ok that's not building my confidence here. Finally it does connect. Ok let me log into it. Username/Password I created does not work. WTF? I tried about 5 times. Nope. I submit a TT to them. They tell me that the password doesn't work and to supply them with the one I changed it to.... hmm.. I told them I haven't been able to log in at all... Ok I paste the the un/pw combo from the email. They told me again it doesn't work. I explained I already told them that in the first TT. They said that they can't reset it and I would have to provide them with what I changed it to, after explaining three times, that I have never logged in or they will have to do a reinstall which will take two hours. At this point I'm starting to lose my patience. I say fine do whatever it takes just get it up, with the password I supplied. I get a msg back from a Level 2 tech "Steve" who said he would get this up and running asap. He did a good job. It was up and it was running! Yay!
I connected to the server, and about 5 minutes later disconnected. Try to reconnect, can't reach the server. Try for THREE HOURS and still can't connect. I submit a TT again asking if they set me up on a node that is being hit with a DDoS attack or what. That was at 10/18/2009 03:18. I went to bed and gave up for the night. When I woke up I seen a reply @ 10/18/2009 04:37. I must admit they are pretty fast at answering TT's. So I tried to connect to the server. Nope, still down. Here it is 12 hours after I submitted the TT and it's still down.
So far I'm far from impressed. It's been up two days and I've been able to use it for a total of five minutes.
I will update this once everything is resolved and how things go from there, so for now I'll just walk around like

After a rocky start with Photon things have got better but things could still be better.
First off I chose the "Beam 1" for 10.95 a month and got it for 3 months I then added CPanel and Fantasitco for another 13.50 a month.
At first it was a very slow setup but once it was setup everything worked great, the tickets are answered reasonably quick although the company tends to promise things they can't deliver.
My biggest pain in the neck problem right now is I don't have any kind of control panel access to my server. In the original e-mail sent to me I was given a Fluid VM username and password and it didn't work.
Then I get told its in beta, last week I contacted them recently and told me my server was never done with Fluid VM and that they are rolling something out and they said that week but they have yet to do anything.
Ping time and speed are great I've had once instance of downtime other than that I've had no problems.
The only other big gripe is billing, I hate having to get "double billed" I must pay for my cpanel, fantastico seperate from my normal billing I would of rather been billed all at once and been done with it.
Overall I guess for a few small problems you can't beat the price I would recommend them.

I have some customers who use a VPN to connect to the internet securely. (They live in a restricted country.)
So when they connect to the VPN, it gives them a new IP, and when they go to "whatismyip.com" it shows the IP of the VPN server, as expected.
The problem is that sometimes their IP changes back to their local ISP without any indication. The VPN still appears to work (green lights are displayed in the VPN icon in the sytem tray), but their IP is now the local ISP providers, which means they are not fully "protected" any more.
And that is bad.
So, what I'm thinking is to find a Windows program or script or something that runs every x minutes.. and checks to see what is the current IP. If it isn't as expected (the VPN server's IP), then a big red warning window would start flashing on the screen, so they can then reboot or restart the VPN.
Does anyone know of such a program?
(BTW - they are using openVPN, latest version. And yes -- it works properly 99% of the time.. but for some reason the IP just changes back to local ISP for no apparent reason. The log does not show any errors or helpful indicators.)

I am a customer of Yahoo Small Business unlimited hosting. I am running Joomla (CMS) with jreviews which uses PHP and MySQL. I now need to expand my review and rating website to earn some profits. According to my business plan, I would need atleast a 1000-2000 unique visitors a day to actually earn off the website to afford a VPS. My question is, can Yahoo Small Business "Unlimited" hosting plan sustain that number under the usage of Joomla? I have been trying to find an answer to this for a long long time but to no avail. I know that "unlimited" is actually a marketing tactic and that one must move to VPS or Dedicated servers for serious traffic. But I cannot move to a VPS before I earn something from the website initially due to lack of funds. Can I expect to be tension free till the range of 1000-2000 uniques/day?

I have a windows 2003 VPS and I'm not satisfied with the HD I/O speed, and before I mention what speeds I am getting I just want to see what people say should be plausible. I want to know if I am thinking I should get more out of the VPS then I really should.
Anyway, I used this program from ATTO to benchmark:
short-media.com/download.php?d=108
Called ATTO Disk Benchmark
If anyone is willing, run it on your VPS and post a screenshot. It's a standalone .exe, no install needed.
