What Kind Of Website Can 1GB Ram Handle
I'm not quite sure how much of Ram I need for my vps, But I'm going to get
1GB Vps from wiredtree.com
Anyone can tell me what kind of website I would be able to run on such an VPS? If it's just wordpress driven website...
Maybe anyone can share how much traffic your site have and how much ram it's using?
At the moment I have website with about 40k uniques/day and ~100k pageloads per day hosted on shared hosting but they have gave me 3days to find another hosting because they say I use to much of their traffic...

Mid-level (1GB RAM) VPS With Strong Support
My university runs a website to help students find rentals in the general area. We recently ran into some billing issues with our current VPS host, and we're trying to move to a new VPS. I have some experience finding cheap VPSs (I use Slicehost for a 256MB RAM VPS), but this one has different requirements. Our current VPS provides us with 1GB of RAM, and we don't want to go below this. Also, the VPS we use gives great tech support to my boss (who only knows the very basics about technology). We'd also strongly prefer a VPS that comes with Cpanel. Does anyone have any recommendations for other VPSs that meet these requirements?

VPN - What Kind Of Processing Power And RAM
I am planning to set up a VPN server for a group of about 4 people who will use it as an "internet proxy" for *all* their internet connectivity. (They live in a country where internet activity is severely restricted (and monitored), and I think a VPN would be a good solution for them.) However, I have no idea what kind of processing power or system resources are needed for this kind of situation. Is a simple VPS ok? How much memory would be good? How about server speed? The server will be linux (probably CentOS) and will use OpenVPN. I'm thinking that there probably doesn't need to be a whole lot of raw CPU power or RAM, but maybe I'm wrong?

More RAM = Faster Website
I just changed hosts, thinking it would be faster. My homepage uses 53MB of RAM. My old host lets me use ini_set to change this (currently have it at 128MB), my new host doesn't (48MB). So, I've cut some of the functionality of the site to make it work on the new host. Should I upgrade the hosting plan to higher RAM? Given that the site already works reasonably well on the new host, what type of performance boosts could I expect to see by doubling the RAM?

Shared Host <$5/mo - 10+ Addons, 1gb+ Bandwidth
I tried to put as much as possible into the title I've had asmallorange for like 6 years now, was great host but lately uptime seemed to suffer a bit. Searching for some new one to try. Could You recommend a cheap less than $5/mo shared hosting? What I need: highest uptime available, 99.8 or above would be great use more than 10 websites with them, addon domains feature. bandwidth above 1 gig, maybe above 5, not sure. support doesn't matter that much, cause I almost never ned to contact them, lol another thing I'd prefer is to use company's details in WHOIS info - that's really kind of important. Don't like Godaddy's $10 service. Just don't want to pay.

UK Web Hosting 500MB Space 1GB Bandwidth Existing .org.uk Domain
I'm the webmaster for a church website: stpetersbraunstone.org.uk and our domain & hosting renewal is coming up, so I'm looking to see if there's a better deal. We're with namehog.net (and have been for 2 years with no problems at all) on their Professional package. The renewal fees are 105GBP (web hosting) + 5.90GBP (domain name) + 17.5pc VAT to cover the next 2 years, which comes to 130.31GBP. The site is powered by WordPress, so PHP and MySQL are needed. And we upload lots of photos, so need at least 250MB webspace I'd have thought. So far, our highest monthly bandwidth usage has been under 800Mb, and our visitor numbers are increasing and our highest monthly figure so far was 401. Any recommendations gratefully received. There seems to be many different companies out there who offer what I want, so I'm after some personal recommendations please. I've already used this site to discount streamline.net due to bad reviews. I'm looking at fuzioned.com and redfoxhosting.co.uk - any thoughts? I've also come across no-wires.co.uk - has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them? And yes, I have submitted my details to the "request quote" thing.

Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites. To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb. From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server. The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites. Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

New Kind Of DDos Attack From Dc++ Hubs
I had a pretty hectic week dealing with these 3 customers with ddos problems and got to try a few different ddos datacenters for each of them. First I got these two anime sites, I put them on mine and a friends staminus box as soon as their dns resolved 1000s of ips came through sending syn on port 80, it would just knock port 80 out filling up contrack table, etc. Id ban a few hundred ips and some ranges 100s more would come. In the bandwidth it only shows about 200kbs incoming as well. We had put in an emergency ticket with staminus and was told bascially we are idiots and that only 4 packets per second were coming into the server, I was looking at the tcpdump and the kernel was dropping 10-20 thousand packets a second just from the ips id banned. So after a day or two of this of saying we didnt have an attack I moved them to a gigeservers vps I got from funtoosh at sh3lls.net As soon as I moved the sites over there it stopped dead so giges filters automatically picked it up. So either staminus doesnt protect against that type or what. It seemed like a a regular syn flood. So for customer 3, this person has had numerous problems dealing with ddos. He says that the attacker has this tool that exploits the verlisign dc++ hub, that it takes over and has every user send ddos to the server of their choice. he had been on sharktech a few months per my reccomendation, he said they could not stop the attacks. he came to me said this was his last resort, so I said well surely staminus would stop it. As soon as his dns resolved on staminus server it got destroyed, nothing got filtered, couldnt even login the box. I didnt have access to staminus portal so I couldnt file a ticket, I had went in their irc again and could not get them to nullroute the ip, understandable since I didnt have access to the ticket system. So I immediatly deleted his dns and the attacks came for up to 12 hours hitting the ip he used to be on. Id ban thosands , entire /8 ranges and it would just reload and start hitting again. These syn floods sent very little data at slow intervals so i see why it was so hard to filter. SO then I move him to gigeservers vps, his site is now up 12 hours, in netstat you would see teh occasional ip coming in and sending syn then closing connection so I thought it had it filtered. We was celebrating, as soon as we did I relaized I put my foot in my mouth as the attacks started full scale there. Nothing i really could do software wise as the vps kept running out of memory So I just had funtoosh remove the ip. My client the victim was hanging out in their dc++ hub at zerohour.mafiahub.net and pasting ne the logs translating from romanian on how they commanded the attacks. But supposedly they can connect to any dc++ hub and use this tool to take it over and have every user on the hub send ddos. The tool and exploit they are using is private thank god so it seems only a few romanian hacking groups have this. This kind of attack could not be filtered at sharktech, staminus, or gigeservers I had tried it on softlayer first, had them add it to ddos guard, it knocked Both my servers offline that was on same subnet. It sends very small packets and slow intervals, there is absolutely nothing you can do software wise. Just giving everyone a heads up on what kind of methods are being used. If someone does think their hosting can block these attacks via hardware or software id be more then happy to give you the customers name, and they do not care to pay as long as the attacks can be filtered.

I have thought about providing free image hosting for the members, so I could have 100-300 people hosting sig images and other graphics on the server, which they in turn would link into forums and other places which could create quite a few requests for those graphics. Is there anyway to quantify what type of load this static, image hosting would create? The server currently is typically around .05 to .1 server load with nearly flatlined CPU's.

What Kind Of Prices Are You Looking At For Private Data Center Space

Is there any kind of rough monthly price I should expect? Maybe a standard per sq ft charge? Also, if you rent a private "suite" does that include office space, or would that still be needed separately? How much would it be to get a small (100 to 500 sq ft) office in the infomart? Cabinet Suite (Internap only it seems), and private suites would be considered. Possibly a cage or private rack, but not preferred.

Windows: 2GB Physical Memory - 1.2GB Used - 1.1GB Page File Usage : Normal
I have a Windows 2003 server with 2GB ram running IIS and SQL 2005 express. I noticed that the server only uses around 1.2GB of its physical memory (been a few days) while page file usage seems high at 1.1GB. SQL server has been allocated a maximum 1GB of memory while IIS has no limitations on memory usage. Server doesn't really show any slowness at this point (not a lot of traffic). But to my understanding other than the proccesses that always use some virtual memory (around 400mb usually), page file should be only used when there is insufficient physical memory? So is there something wrong with my memory usage, 1.1GB on page file while there are still almost 50% available physical ram?

What Type Of Server To Handle
I have a client that asked me to educate myself about web hosting and make a recommendation to him about where he should be. He currently has a shared hosting server at Network Solutions and finds unexplained slow downs and disk corruption reports in his forums DB unacceptable. I'm glad I found this site-lots of good info but nothing like throwing up some stats and seeing what people recommend. The client told me he wanted to move to a dedicated server but I'm thinking a VPS might do the trick. Especially if upgraded with dedicated Core as well as RAM such as wiredtree is offering. Looking for a managed, Unix based server that in a typical month serves 100k unique visitors 230k page views 500Gb of downloads But needs to be easily upgradeable to handle his expected traffic levels in the next year of monthly visits in the order of: 250k unique visitors 600k page views 1.1Tb of throughput As far as features: *Currently they use about 15 gigs of disk space. Some of that is inefficient disk management but the bulk is them supporting previous software releases. *needs to be fully managed *US datacenter with all the features you guys would expect to have as far as backbone access, security, power backups, etc.. *Backups by provider. Let's say 5 gigs worth since the old software versions don't really need to be backed up.(I'll recommend his own backups as well) *Either plesk or cpanel *15 minute hardware SLA is what the client is asking for but i'd like to present some comparisons to 1 hour SLA companies to see how much he'd save. And finally, i tried to search for the answer to this but the keywords kept bringing up lots of hits without good info. The client sells software so the bandwidth needed is pretty consistent until they release a new version. Then it skyrockets to the point they may have 1500 people trying to download a 50Meg file simultaneously. What is the right way to handle that? Use a CDN or negotiate with the hosting provider to provide burstable bandwidth as needed. As a side note while looking at many offerings I was most surprised that bandwidth seems to sold in large chunks with overage costs hidden.

He has managed to spring up 2 websites already, and is no doubt planning to launch more. Not sure if anyone else has been in this type of situation but I need to get something done about this. I have no doubt in my mind that even if theplanet did shut his sites down, or at least wiped the infringing software from the disks, he would jump over to another host and do the same thing again. My company doesn't have time to waste chasing him around, however the software he has contains a lot of proprietary code that we created and was never intended to be public. So far both of the domains that he is using have Network Solutions as the registrar. Does Netsol assist with this kind of thing? Hopefully someone with similar experience can chime in with some advice.

How To Handle Root Password And Support
I have VPS's with two companies that have managed/semi-managed support (depending on how you define it) and rely on them for a fair amount. Whenever submitting a support request, I have to submit my root and cPanel passwords. Do people in my situation leave their root password as they would normally and just changing it however often they would if it wasn't given to support? Or, do you change your root/cpanel passwords before making a support request, and then change it back after the ticket is closed? No offense intended to either of the VPS companies or their personell (that monitor WHT), both have been great. But, the reality is that I take it everyone at the company that has access to submitted tickets now have access to the root password, and since as a customer, I don't know when there has been employee turnover, that seems a security risk. So, I am curious how others handle this. Not really sure if this belongs here or in the VPS forum, but since it could apply to any type of server/hosting account, I figured it belonged here.

Too High Server Load, How To Handle
if upgrading to that new server that I'll mention will probably solve my problems. Whatever help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Below are the details: In the GMT evenings and nights my current server gets so loaded that every page load takes 10 - 30 seconds. Even the pure html pages will be so slow to load. It seems that after a certain treshold it just suddenly becomes that much slower. Not much middleground there. I have high MaxClients and ServerLimit values now and the error log doesn't say that they are exceeded anymore but that didn't help enough. I have a high traffic website that is using latest version of apache (2.2.x) with the prefork MPM and apache is optimized, PHP 5.2.5 and APC 3.0.15. I get 160,000 - 210,000 pageloads per day. 32,000 - 45,000 visits per day. Most of its pages are PHP but shouldn't be too CPU or databes intensive. Mysql isn't used and I mostly used sharedmem (php's shm functions) for databases. 2 semaphores are quite heavily used but that can't explain how a few more users would make the server serve pages so much slower. Swap usage is practically 0 and CPU user % usage is like 1 - 2 % and CPU system % is also about the same even during peak times. However the Average Load or whatever that "top" reports is 6 - 9. My current server scecs: 1 GB Ram, Pentium D 3 ghz, CentOS 5 32bit fully updated. I load all pictures and even the stylesheet from a secondary server by using href="$secondaryserverIP..." in the html code, so the main server practically just serves the pages. My new server will have apache with the worker MPM and latest versions of every software. Also its specs are: 2 GB of RAM, Intel Dual Core Xeon 2.40GHz, CentOS 5.1 32bit fully updated. I have a sophisticated netstat based ddos script that is an improved version of DDoS Deflate and while some of these slowdowns seem to have been caused by attacks that it then was able to defend me from, most of them are not. I am even protected from users who constantly have 7+ connections to my site and if someone has a way too high number of connections, the script won't even check if it constantly has it and the script just bans that user outright. It probably is banning a bunch of innocent proxy users too but that is a small price to pay.

Can A 256 MB VPS Handle My Traffic
I've only ever had a shared hosting account with Hostgator, plus a few freebie hosts. However, I'm now pulling some heavy traffic and I'm concerned that Hostgator is going to suspend me soon. My traffic on Saturday for example was ~2600 unique visitors and ~5000 page views. All of this traffic was from WordPress blogs and a small SMF forum. I've since converted one of the blogs to a static site to limit my CPU usage and I've setup caching for my other WordPress blogs. Advice I've heard on the Hostgator forums is that 7000 page views per day for a database driven site is around the time you should be upgrading and based on my traffic from Saturday (which admittedly was a bit of a spike) I could potentially be receiving 150,000 page views/month, so about 20x the point at which they recommend upgrading at. Anyhows, in a nutshell I need to upgrade, or risk Hostgator throwing a tantrum at me ... but I don't have a lot of cash to pay for an upgrade Due to my lack of cashflow I've been considering moving to a VPS. The company which has interested me the most is HostV.com who offer a 256 MB (with 1000 MB 'burst' RAM) for only US$39.99 which seems quite reasonable to me. They say that their 256 MB plan should be able to handle over 5000 page views per day for a WordPress run site, but I'm a little suspect. Do any of you know if this is a reasonable expectation from a 256 MB chunk of a virtual server? I have no idea and am always wary of believing the sales pitch of a random company across the other side of the world.

How Much Can Php's Mail Function Really Handle
I have mixed feelings on the mail() function in php. I've seen it send out amazing numbers of emails and yet I keep reading that it is prone to problems. I'm wondering if someone can put an approximation on what you could/would send out in say 60 seconds. I know that there are tonnes of variables, so i'll try and remove a few: - server hardware is typical of a cpanel/WHM shared hosting environment - running apache/linux - email is say 20kb HTML format - mail is sent in a php script loop, one by one; alternatively, mail() could be called in clusters of x emails - like send 5 emails at once - there are 400 recipients
