Is there really some kind of requirements to host Silverlight applications except for the fact that you probably need IIS and .NET support?
Is there some kind of special configuration needed?

I have built a web application with visual studio 2008 that uses some improvements and tools like "entity framework", "script manager", "updatepanel" etc.Is it enough for the hosting server to have ".net framework 3.5" installed or "framework 3.5 with SP1" ?. I ll choose hosting company accordingly.

Does anybody use Microsoft LogParser on their 2003 server? I am looking to use this program to find out when a user login via remote desktop and when they logoff. I have found that in Event Viewer the EventID of user login/logoff is 528 or 538. The only thing is that there are multiple logoffs in a row (with the same time for the same user) or the user logs in then out again at the same time right down to the second.
This is the query I was running then importing that data into a database to view/analyze the data:
Code:
SELECT
ComputerName,
EventID,
TimeGenerated AS LogTime,
STRCAT(STRCAT(EXTRACT_TOKEN (Strings, 1, '|'), ''), EXTRACT_TOKEN(Strings, 0, '|')) AS Username
INTO
c:logonoff.csv
FROM
[computer name here]Security
WHERE
EventID IN (528; 538)
AND
EventCategoryName = 'Logon/Logoff'

I have a potential client that uses it and ISA is blocking the ports my control panel uses so they need to open up the ports. Anyone know how they can do this? They're not local otherwise I'd just stop by and tinker around until I figure it out.

I've already posted this over at the vBulletin forums and with their tech support team, but so far no one has been able to find a solution. Someone suggested I post here as well.
I am currently running vB using PHP 4.3.9 with Zend WinEnabler on a windows 2003 server. I have a seperate database server and a web server. This current configuration works fine, but I am moving to an upgraded web server and this is where the problems start.
Due to intermitant issues with Zend WinEnabler (now a discontinued product) I wanted to move to the latest version of PHP (5.2.5 NTS) and Microsoft FastCGI. The problem is that I am getting blank pages when clicking the Today's Post link from the top menu and immediately following the submission of a new post. I've gone through all of the vBulletin listed suggestions about trouble shooting blank pages and none apply.
Because I have a seperate database sever, I am accessing the same database with the new server vB configuration I am migrating to. As such I suspect the issue has to be related to web server given there are no issues on the current live site and the only changes are the PHP version and acceleration app.
If anyone has some suggestions, please let me know. I am running out of time on my server migration window before I am going to be billed for two servers.

Can anyone give me some insight on how VPS licensing works with SPLA? According to my reseller, each VPS needs its own standalone license which seem to differ with what I read somewhere about Microsoft Server 2008 allowing up to 8 virtual stances with 1 license or something like that.

Microsoft said this about Microsoft Licensing for Virtualization
Windows Server 2008 Datacenter
Run any number of software instances in physical and virtual operating system environments on a server.
Now,I have some questions:
1)Is this method of licensing just for hyper-v or we can use it on vmware ESXi or Xen?
2)How we can use Microsoft Volume Licensing on Vmware ESXi and Xen?
3)What is the best solution for windows virtualization?(vmware esxi or hyper-v or xen)
4)what is difference between xen and xenserver?
5)which control panels we can use for hyper-v,vmware ESXi and xenserver?

I have seen here in the Windows Hosting Forum that some people ask questions about Windows hosting where they would really benefit from a basic understanding of the Microsoft web technology.
Recently on Jan 21, Microsoft made it a trivial process to install all the components needed to "kick the tires" with the "Web Platform Installer"
And I've come across a lot of hosters claiming to provide Windows hosting that could really use some quality time with this stuff!
From the Microsoft web site:
The Web Platform Installer (Web PI) is a simple tool that installs Microsoft's entire Web Platform, including IIS, Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and the .NET Framework. Using the Web Platform Installerâs user interface, you can choose to install either specific products or the entire Microsoft Web Platform onto your computer. The Web PI also helps keep your products up to date by always offering the latest additions to the Web Platform.
New Updates! Now supporting Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, Web PI makes it easy to install and stay up-to-date with the Microsoft Web Platform. This updated release lets you install ASP.NET MVC, Visual Studio Tools for Silverlight, and much more!

We have identified that messages from your IP are being filtered based on the recommendations of the Symantec Brightmail filter as well as our internal Smart Screen Filters. The filter was initiated by Hotmail at (5/20/2009 12:00:00 AM) PST due to a large volume of emails that were sent prior to this time.
We will be happy to work directly with Symantec on your behalf to investigate and possibly resolve this problem. In order to move forward, we will need examples of the messages that were caught by the Brightmail filters.

A new client of mine used Microsoft Exchange to check their emails online... I run @Mail, and am just wondering is this an ok trade off? Or is Exchange something entirely different to just WebMail... I'm worried that it might be but aren't sure...

One Webhost is offering MS SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Processor Licence) for US$385 per month.
Another webhost is offering MS SQL 2005 Standard Edition with 5 CALs for US$35 per month.
The first webhost says CALs are not available and that:
"A Processor License is required for running a Web server that is open to public access. Using CALs may put you in question from Microsoft's legal point of view if the inappropriate license is applied."
Only 3 people have access to the server and the website, I think, is very standard. www.culture360.org
Our org does not wish to do anything illegal. Which one is most appropriate? The price differences are very large.
I've had a look here:

we are running Microsoft SQL 2005 Express edition (9.0.32).
Recently I just noticed that the database log file of our main database is HUGE. The database data file is only 50MB and the log file is 210GB.
Any idea what is causing this? Seems to be getting bigger with time, in the last 7 days seems to have grown by 100GB. I noticed the following settings under the database:
Autogrowth: By 15 percent, unrestricted growth

webhost that supports Microsoft exchange server
I have a client who needs a solid webhost that supports MS exchange server for his email.
I usually recommend Bluehost , but I guess they donât do this. Quick turnaround time on email tech issues (2-4 hours) and phone support is also needed. The client is definitely a phone person.
It should be Wordpress friendly. My CMS that I'm using is actually Textpattern, but most people don't know it so I just opt for the default popular version, Wordpress.
At the minimum, it should support; PHP 4.3+
MySQL 3.23+

Do you know is Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 really free? By this I mean can I start VPS hosting business using Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 without paying any license fee for virtualization product? Are there any restrictions?
I was very unpleasantly surprised when I found out that VmWare Server is actually not free and totally unusable for VPS hosting companies, although when you read their FAQ you get impression that its free and that ESX is just "better version". In fact for VPS hosting VmWare is not free and its totally useless.
So I am interested if there is some "minor glitch" in Microsoft agreement for Virtual server as is in VmWare agreement for VmWare Server?

Anyone else sign up for this?
Did microsoft require your host email them and say "[you] have exclusive sending rights for this IP"?
Here is the part of the email from microsoft:
xx, unfortunately, we have not received an e-mail confirmation from
your ISP, [host], for your IP
x.x.x.x. Please ask them to re-send the e-mail confirmation to [email] with the [id] subject. Please also
ask them to include you on the "To" or "Cc" field in case that we fail
to receive their e-mail confirmation.
Is this a requirement for everybody?
I signed up for AOL's junk reporting program a few months ago and I didn't have to bother anybody about it.
If I recall correctly, all AOL cared about was whether or not my reverse DNS was set properly.

However, it doens't say what kind of VPS can be used for this pricing. Does anyone know if it matters for cpanel pepole? Or as long as it is VPS, they are okay with it?

Hello, we have a few web servers that run Windows 2003 Server and IIS for web page hosting. We develop custom applications and don't do "web hosting" per se.
What is the best way to do this in a load balanced environment? We have a Cisco load balancer out in front of these servers, but I'm curious about the following:
1) Is there a way to replicate IIS entries instead of having to configure the site on each server?
2) How does everyone handle file replication (hopefully in real time) across all servers?

I currently have a server (Xeon 1x5310, 4gb RAM, 4x500gb hdd in Raid 10) with Windows 2003. Now do to a project I'm looking at installing Windows 2008 and upgrading to 2x5310 and 16gb of RAM on my server.
I'm looking to create a virtualized test environment for development of a new web service I'm working on. What I'm looking to develop right now is 2 file servers, 3 web servers, 3 MS SQL database servers and 1 DNS server (would prefer but not sure if hardware can handle it. Virtualization would be ideal as this is very similar to what we believe will we have when we launch the service.
I have a few questions I'm hoping you might be able to answer:
1) With the upgraded hardware specs, should it be able to handle the load if I assign each virtual entity 1 core with 2gb of RAM each?
2) I would like to create each of the multiple servers in a cluster (ie cluster of webservers) as this is how it will be in production. But, I've never worked with clusters before so:
a) where can I learn about clustering windows 2008 servers?
b) is this possible to do in a virtualized environment?
3) How does MS work the licensing? I want to have each server running Windows 2008 and 2-3 of them running SQL Server 2005.
a) Do they charge extra for each virtualized server?
b) Does this mean I have to purchase 3 complete copies of SQL Server or is there a way I can pay a low license fee for use in a non-commercial, non-production environment?
4) Does anyone see any problems with this setup or have any suggestions for me?
* I do have money available to spend on a good solution, so if you have suggestions that cost please let me know. I just thought virtualization would be the way to go as the project will be in development for at least a year with no public access.
** I realize that Hyper-V hasn't been released yet (that I know of) so information on it might be limited

Can I use this edition for hosting on dedicated server, and how does it compare to the enterprise edition ? Can it be used with hosting? The web edition sucks as I can not install ms sql on it, so it is useless. Anyone use sbs server to host his website, because most of the link i read never mention it for hosting, and only for print sharing/ filesharing/ business applications, but where is it's use for hosting?
So what do you think ? IO looked at its infor and it did not provide much?

I installed FastCGI and configured it via fcgiconfig.js using this command
cscript fcgiconfig.js -add -section:"PHP" -extension:php -path:"C:PHPphp-cgi.exe"
It configured fcgiext.ini and added the .php extension to the sites and what not.
When accessing a php script, I get the following error though:
FastCGI Error
The FastCGI Handler was unable to process the request.
Error Details:The FastCGI process exited unexpectedly
Error Number: -2147467259 (0x80004005).
Error Description: Unspecified error
HTTP Error 500 - Server Error.
Internet Information Services (IIS)
I did not do anything special with the PHP. It is the zip 5.2.5 from the site. I configured php.ini and move it to c:/windows. I granted IUSR permission on php-cgi.exe
Am I missing something? I followed the guide here
Windows 2003 / IIS6 / PHP 5.2.5
