Hyper-V, Clustering Windows 2008 Servers And Microsoft Licensing

May 23, 2008

I currently have a server (Xeon 1x5310, 4gb RAM, 4x500gb hdd in Raid 10) with Windows 2003. Now do to a project I'm looking at installing Windows 2008 and upgrading to 2x5310 and 16gb of RAM on my server.

I'm looking to create a virtualized test environment for development of a new web service I'm working on. What I'm looking to develop right now is 2 file servers, 3 web servers, 3 MS SQL database servers and 1 DNS server (would prefer but not sure if hardware can handle it. Virtualization would be ideal as this is very similar to what we believe will we have when we launch the service.

I have a few questions I'm hoping you might be able to answer:

1) With the upgraded hardware specs, should it be able to handle the load if I assign each virtual entity 1 core with 2gb of RAM each?

2) I would like to create each of the multiple servers in a cluster (ie cluster of webservers) as this is how it will be in production. But, I've never worked with clusters before so:

a) where can I learn about clustering windows 2008 servers?

b) is this possible to do in a virtualized environment?

3) How does MS work the licensing? I want to have each server running Windows 2008 and 2-3 of them running SQL Server 2005.

a) Do they charge extra for each virtualized server?

b) Does this mean I have to purchase 3 complete copies of SQL Server or is there a way I can pay a low license fee for use in a non-commercial, non-production environment?

4) Does anyone see any problems with this setup or have any suggestions for me?

* I do have money available to spend on a good solution, so if you have suggestions that cost please let me know. I just thought virtualization would be the way to go as the project will be in development for at least a year with no public access.

** I realize that Hyper-V hasn't been released yet (that I know of) so information on it might be limited

Virtuozzo Windows 2008 With Hyper-V - A Game Changer

Oct 16, 2009

In case you missed it:

[url]

Without any fanfare, at the beginning of September, Parallels released Virtuozzo Containers (formerly Virtuozzo) 4.5.

Version 4, launched in January, unified for the first time the Windows and Linux branches, introducing major new features like virtual SMP masking and support for Microsoft and Red Hat cluster services.

Version 4.5, which is built on this new architecture, brings in a wire range of new capabilities:

Enhanced resource management (CPU pools, vCPUs remapping on logical CPUs, offline vHD fragmentation)

Containers cloning

Containers startup order

Support for Windows Server 2008 (32/64bit, with or without Hyper-V, up to Service Pack 1) and its new Failover Clustering

Support for Hyper-V (it’s not exactly clear if this just means that the Hyper-V parent partition can be segmented in containers, or something else)

Support for TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) NICs inside the containers

Support for new 3rd party backup and anti-virus solutions (including the ones provided by AVG, CA, EMC, IBM, McAfee, Symantec and F-Secure)

Support for iSCSI inside the containers (a container can be an Initiator)

Support for IPv6 addresses inside the containers

It’s not entirely clear why Parallels didn’t promote in any way what is still considered its flagship product.
It is true that the large majority of the attention is focused on hardware virtualization, but the company OS virtualization platform should still have a competitive advantage over VMware, Citrix and Microsoft hypervisors in the hosting industry, which is well worth some more marketing effort.

We are wondering why Parallels haven't been shouting from the rooftops. This is a game changer.

Microsoft SPLA... VPS Licensing

Apr 30, 2009

Can anyone give me some insight on how VPS licensing works with SPLA? According to my reseller, each VPS needs its own standalone license which seem to differ with what I read somewhere about Microsoft Server 2008 allowing up to 8 virtual stances with 1 license or something like that.

Microsoft Licensing For Virtualization

Nov 3, 2009

Microsoft said this about Microsoft Licensing for Virtualization

Windows Server 2008 Datacenter
Run any number of software instances in physical and virtual operating system environments on a server.

Now,I have some questions:

1)Is this method of licensing just for hyper-v or we can use it on vmware ESXi or Xen?

2)How we can use Microsoft Volume Licensing on Vmware ESXi and Xen?

3)What is the best solution for windows virtualization?(vmware esxi or hyper-v or xen)

4)what is difference between xen and xenserver?

5)which control panels we can use for hyper-v,vmware ESXi and xenserver?

How To Run Hyper-v Windows Vps

Apr 19, 2009

I want to provide some windows vps, but not sure if hyper-v is best solution. I have several questions,

Q1. Is it possible to limit traffic or bandwidth for hyper-v windows vps? And is there any web GUI that can be provided to the users to manage their VPS, e.g. check the traffic had been used.

Q2. About windows license, I heard that If I run a Windows DataCenter version in the main node, then I do not need license for the vps. Does it mean when I install the windows 2003 as a guest, it will no longer require us to input the CD-KEY?

Windows Licensing?

Apr 15, 2008

I'm sure this has been covered before, but during my search I didn't find much, maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

Okay, so here's how it goes...

I, and a partner, plan on purchasing a 2U server and we're going to co-locate this server in Chicago. This server will be serving a new gaming company we plan on opening. Now, my main issue is obtaining Windows for this server. I have found plenty of retail CD's with like a 5 CALs included, but that was in the $750-$1000 range, which I understand this is what Windows server really cost, but I believe I could find it cheaper.

Does anyone know the BEST, and preferably the cheapest place to buy Windows Server 2003 (Specifically Standard 64bit - R2) or even an "external" monthly license, if such exist. I am new to the entire Windows Server licensing and pricing stuff, so any information would be very much helpful.

Windows VPS Licensing

Sep 14, 2007

I'm helping one of my clients setup some windows VPS's but we're having some serious confusion as to how the licensing works.

I've read on microsoft.com that they now are far more accepting of virtulization and allow, with a single license, anywhere from 4 to unlimited VPS installs with it.

Now, my question is: Does this count with leased licenses? Say I leased a license from my datacenter (say i did 2k3 STD) for $25/m. Would I then be allowed to install it on however many VPS's allow under MS without issue or how does that exactly work?

DNS Clustering Question (windows & Linux)

Mar 29, 2009

I have a 2 cPanel DNSonly cluster setup for all our hosting operations.

However, we are adding a Windows Domain Forest (for Outlook "push-mail") for this the windows server needs to be its own DNS server. We are also planning to host sites on the windows server (no control panel).

Is there any way that I can allow cPanel to use Windows DNS as the new "cluster" and update/delete/add records of DNS to the windows machines?

Same would apply to this question, we are thinking about adding a Directadmin test box, but we want to keep our NS1 and NS2 cluster so they all work with it. Is it possible? What is the feature called if you can't elaborate on it so I can research it?

Load Balancing / File Mirroring & Replication - Microsoft IIS Servers

Jul 30, 2009

Hello, we have a few web servers that run Windows 2003 Server and IIS for web page hosting. We develop custom applications and don't do "web hosting" per se.

What is the best way to do this in a load balanced environment? We have a Cisco load balancer out in front of these servers, but I'm curious about the following:

1) Is there a way to replicate IIS entries instead of having to configure the site on each server?

2) How does everyone handle file replication (hopefully in real time) across all servers?

Windows 2008 Versus Windows 2003 Server

May 26, 2009

With Windows 2003 server, there are comprehensive lists of what you need to do to secure the server before use. For Windows 2008, I wonder is there such a list? Or is it true as what I heard from Microsoft that it is already secured out of the box?

Anyone has any resources on the hardening or preparation of 2008 for server hosting uses?

Slow Transfer Speeds Between Two Win 2008 Servers

Apr 4, 2008

I have two servers running windows 2008(rtm) and I'm getting just crappy transfer speeds between them.

server 1:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
dynamic mirrored disks (windows software raid, ick i know
hyper-V, 6 or so VMs, not real heavy load

server 2:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
3ware 9650Se raid card, raid1 (using latest engineering drivers/firmware)

The servers are connected to each other via gigabit crossover. When I start to do a file transfer (a 40gb virtual machine, through windows file sharing) it starts fast. 60+MB/s says 12minutes remain but after 5minutes and 5gb or so of transfer it's slowed way down to 7MB/s and the network usage graph that was smooth and is now choppy.

Is Windows 2008 Slower Than Windows 2003

May 8, 2008

I'm making a reasonably uninformed comparison here. Since Windows Vista is noted to be more resource intensive and slower than Win XP, are we right in assuming that Windows 2008 is slower than Windows 2003?

For instance, with two boxes with an identical hardware setup but the two different server OSes, will the same application like, say MySQL run slower on the Win 2008 machine?
