VPS + Django + Admin Panel + Managed

May 20, 2009

I've currently got a couple VPS's running a handful of really small sites (most are just a few things for friends, my own site, and a few non-profit sites).

I want to consolidate them in to one VPS, and I don't know who I should go with, I'm looking for some opinions.

Needs:

- I'd like all the security features of the OS to be handled for me. If this is done through some type of control panel, that would be okay - or if it's done by the company, that would be fine as well.

- I'd like to be able to host Django sites (this is a python framework). I'd prefer if it had some scripts setup to make setting up Django sites fairly simple (Media Temple does this fairly well, it's basically a "one click" and you're good to go system).

- I'd like some form of admin panel. It doesn't need to be as fancy as cPanel, but I'd like something for my emails, domains, DNS, and that type of thing.

- I'd like it to be located in North America.

Budget:

I would like to spend less than ~100/month on this. Obviously the lower the better, but I don't want something so cheap that my server is being oversold.

Server Requirements:

As I said, I use very little resources and bandwidth. I just need something that is reliable, and isn't going to be overloaded or go up/go down all the time.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: FTP Option In Admin Panel Completely Missing

Feb 19, 2014

I've encountered a curious problem. Fresh install of Plesk 11 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server. If I want to configure FTP-Accounts under "Domain&Mail" the option is missing entirely. The Server is running an FTP Server and I can connect via FTP to some parts with some users I have created in Plesk. I've scrounged the internet for information about what might be going on here but came up empty.

There is no option to configure FTP Accounts or anything FTP in Plesk. There is empty space where the link should be.

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: Can No Longer Access Admin Panel Remotely

Feb 22, 2015

Windows Server 2012r2
Plesk Panel 12.0.18 Update #36, last updated at Feb 20, 2015

my server running version 12 on win server 2012r2 of the panel. Sometime in the last few days something has changed and I can no longer load the Admin panel on ip:8443.

I can access the panel by using remote desktop into my server and loading it locally.

I also can not connect to the server using the mobile manager app or via telnet. If I disable the firewall in the Plesk panel it works fine so I checked my firewall but incoming on 8443 is allowed. It seems the firewall is blocking ports that were previously open as I can't remote access my MS SQL server either without switching the firewall off.

The only change I'm aware of since I last used the panel is the update #36 install. Not sure where to look next?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Admin Panel - 500 Internal Server Error

Oct 29, 2014

I have experiencing strange behaviour of Plesk admin panel. Actually there were a lot of issues similar with 500 Internal Server error but mine is a bit different..

This is the log came from the '/var/log/sw-cp-server/error_log'

/bin/sh: /usr/share/sw-cp-server/applications-conf.sh: Permission denied
Cannot find config item ["global/SERVERsocket==:8443", ".php", 0]
2014-10-29 19:38:22: (mod_fastcgi.c.1068)

[Code] ....

As you can see there is a line starts with /bin/sh: /usr/share/sw-cp-server/applications-conf.sh: Permission denied and i tried to change this one for permission like 0755 or alternatives for a run but nothings changed. Btw i have plenty of disk space, it wasn't also the case.

I cannot even login with my domain name without 'https' and with the port 8880. It's again giving me the same issue.

BTW i want to give a little extra information; it was a long time that Plesk admin panel working but after today it's stuck in 500 Internal server error. What i tried today that to follow 'How to generate custom self-signed SSL certificates and apply it to Postfix: [URL] ....' , but after 6th step i was decied to stop because i couldnt find the root.pem file a minute and than i wanted to try on plesk and i saw the bad news I don't know it was related but i wanted to share.

Checked the password and saw that the emailpassword for his emailaddress (eg. mylogin@mydomain.com) is now the same from the admin panel login. So i changed the emailpassword and checked the admin panel login - it now has the emailpassword. What a mess.. I'm running Plesk Panel 11.5.30 MU47.

When a colo vendor can consider themselves as a managed colocation provider? What make them different than *normal* colo service?

If you need a managed colo, why not go with managed server? With managed server, your vendor will take care about the server health, including software and hardware too

(I am mentioning to fully managed server vendors like Rackspace, don't tell me cheap managed servers)

Plesk Vs. C-Panel / Control Panel

Oct 11, 2007

I indicated that I've basically been using my webhosting company as "file storage".

1) I create all my files in .html using notepad

2) My files are limited to .html, .jpg, .gif, (and a couple of .js and .css) files.

3) My domain is not connected with my webhost; I use the nameserver zoneedit.com and I use URL forwarding and mask/cloak the domain the address bar (using multiple domains) as follows:

domain1.com --> forwards to [url]

domain2.com --> forwards to [url]

domain3.com --> forwards to [url]

4) For uploading files, I go to ftp://123.456.78 and drop/drag/copy/paste files into the window using my browser

5) I'm able to password protect the subdirectories as I choose.

---------------

I called my webhost, Hostik, and told them that I was unable to do anything on my web console. I can't change a password, create a user, or even access my usage/bandwidth quotas.

They told me that I'm on an "old server" using the windows-based console (probably C-Panel / Control Panel) and they're in the process over the next three months of transfering everyone over to "Plesk".

So, they set me up with a new Plesk account, while keeping the old one in place, so that I could move/transfer my files to the Plesk account.

When I went to Plesk, I realized things are not the same:

1) In my Control Panel / C-Panel, I had a unique IP URL Address - [url]

2) In Plesk, it seems there's a set IP URL Address - [url] - that everyone shares.

3) I was told that in Plesk, many people use that IP URL address and that I'm supposed to place my files into the "httpdocs" folder.

Appearently, this is a system of shared hosting whereby many people have the same IP URL address (different from what I had before) and it recognizes each account by the login or something, so the "httpdocs" folder would identify my domain.

I was then told that in Plesk, I must have my domain affixed to the Plesk account.

In other words, I can no longer do what I was doing before, having my domain separated in another location and using URL forwarding from an outside nameserver.

--------------------------

So, my original question is what's the difference between Plesk vs. C-Panel/Control Panel?

Perhaps I answered most of it above.

Is it correct that I can't do things the way I've been doing them so far if that's the case?

It might be that Plesk is not for me and I may need to find a host that gives me my own unique IP URL Address. However, I was informed that not many companies are doing that as most are switching over to Plesk.

In addition, Hostik does not offer multiple domains.

In response to this thread, David recommended I try synhosting.com

synhosting.com has "Multiple Websites". I assume this means mulitiple domains. Correct?

What's my best option at this point?

1) Find a host that has C-Panel / Control Panel (if any there are)?

2) Use a service such as synhosting.com and move all my domains over to them?

3) If I do use synhosting.com, am I required to move my domains over to their nameservers?

4) I have my MX Mail records pointing to Fastmail.fm for my email virtual domains. Would I still be able to do this if my domain is dedicated to a webhost and opt not to use their email feature?

5) Should I get rid of this old-school thought of using my web host as "file storage" and stop this practice of using URL forwarding and cloaking?

SSH - Only VPS Admin

Apr 21, 2009

I've recently picked up a position that is *mostly* web development, but they would also like me to learn how to admin their server, which is a VPS running the latest stable v. of Apache.

The kicker is that there is no web-based control panel. It all has to be done via SSH.

I've been given the server IP address, my own login credentials, and su root password (with an admonition that root login is not permitted).

I have a number of questions:

a. how do I determine what software - and what version of that software - is on the VPS (e.g. php, etc...)?

b. how do I set up web hosting accounts on the VPS?

c. once a web hosting account is set up, how do I set up FTP user accounts?

d. how do I set up mysql databases?

e. how do I set up e-mail accounts?

All of this has to be done using SSH only.

Dns (using Direct Admin)

Oct 11, 2009

Well what i can i say that direct admin is really pain in the ass, twice i asked in their forum but it was queued for moderation then not published. i'm having a problem setting up my domain 100% correctly.

let me explain more:

Before 1 or 2 weeks, i re-build the server and installed direct admin, but its really harder than other panels and i couldn't figure it 100% how to do,
my website now is running but i have the following problems

1- domain name can not be solved by all people. when i try to ping it it says its not resolvable, while the domain opens for most of users except for very few which gives an error saying can not connect to server

2- i get this error when using intodns.com
[url]
while everything else is ok

3- some of users in some countries access home/admin/domains/sharedip/... while others access home/admin/domains/mydomain.com/... which is the correct one, this causes problems but i temporary solved the problem by uploading files into both folders

Direct Admin And 64 Bit OS

Feb 20, 2008

I am trying to install Direct Admin on Cent OS 4.5 ( 64 bit ), but i am constantly getting library files error, one after another,

Example -

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

then

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

then

./directadmin: error while loading shared libraries: libz.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

goes on .........

But if i install 32 Bit library files (RPM), for them, they vanish and next error comes, with new file missing

I have tried loading 10 RPM's of 32 bit, but i cant go now forever...

Is there anyway to install Direct Admin on 64 Bit Cent OS?

Is there any 1 RPM file, which i can install and then Direct Admin wont give library problems.. ?

LX Admin Hosting

Oct 1, 2008

I am just thinking about getting back into the business since they always say, once your in you can never get out. I am just looking for a little bit of opinions here.

My first question is that I would like to make a shared/reseller hosting site where I can sell LxAdmin Hosting. I beleive that this would be one of the first in the industry, but if you know any sites that specify in LxAdmin Hosting, if you could let me know, i would like to take a check at them. Next, do you think this would have any success. The reason I beleive it would be good is because it would be a cheaper cost for the server, therefore it would be cheaper to purchase on the users end, and they would get more for their money.

Add Domain Via Direct Admin

Nov 7, 2009

When I introduce myself as a newbie, I do not exaggerate. Hope to slowly change that, thought.

I have recently rented a dedicated server from worldstream and have paid for a lifetime usage of Directadmin. My goal is just to host my own site.

Now I am trying to transfer the my domain to this server. From what I can tell, I need to change the DNS for the domain from it's current DNS.

In the Directadmin control panel under "DNS Administration", I see "Add Zone" which I assume is the step to take. Under "Add zone", it asks for

(1) Domain name (what format would I enter this)

(2) IP Address (I was supplied with three IP's when I signed up with worldstream. Do I just pick one of these?)

(3) Name Server 1 (Unsure of what to enter here)

(4) Name Server 2 (Ditto as above)

I realize this is quite basic for most.

WHMSonic Shoutcast Admin Pro

Jun 9, 2008

i'm still not too sure how to put all this together,
And im starting to feel stressed out

I think i need a dedicated server with cpanel/whm installed on it
before i can install whmsonic and start selling radio streams with hosting right?

How much is this gonna set me back if i want to create a lot of accounts on one sever,
I am aware that you should only put so many accounts on one server.

I want to be able to offer the extras to the users so if they
are not using their account for live shows they can use the auto
dj features plus they'd have their web space for uploading audio.

And all the good stuff that comes with those features.
An example of what i'd like to offer is on sleepy engineers.

I just don't know if i have to get all this seperate and put it
on a dedicated server mysellf or if there's servers ready with
all this installed and ready to use.

And i don't have a lot of cash to start out
Im thinking 100$ per month to start with.

I like cast control's features, but i've only used whm/cpanel before, for setting up web hosting accounts.

Most reseller packages put me off it's never really my own service.
