Using FTP To Transfer Sites Between Servers

Nov 30, 2007

I am manually transferring sites from an old server to a new one. Currently I am downloading them to my local computer and reuploading them, which is of course much slower than transferring them between server to server.

I have root access on both servers. Can someone elaborate on the best FTP command to use to transfer them? Or is there a good FTP client for linux which would make it easier for me to do this?

Transfer My Sites

Dec 25, 2007

I have just signed up for a WHM reseller hosting account where I want to transfer all my websites from old hosting reseller account.

So now, I have actually two reseller accounts:

The old one is rather small with limited bandwidth.

The new one has everything unlimited.

So it's good deal for me. But It's gonna take years for me to transfer all my sites actually hosted in my old server.

Could anyone possibly help me find a "raccourci" the shortest way of getting my sites transferred to my new WHM account. Any links, options on the WHM or cpanel etc. I'm lost and loosing my patience.

Transfer Sites From VPS To Another VPS Transparently

May 28, 2009

We've got about 40 sites hosted on a VPS from a provider that we'd like to put elsewhere due to reliability problems where we are.

So is there a way to transfer all of this between VPS's (assuming similar environment) and maintain all existing web content, email addresses/passwords/aliases/forwarders, MySQL databases, etc?

I know I'd have to change everyone's DNS records.

Transfer Sites Between Hosts

What is the easiest way to transfer sites between hosts. The databases are no problem, but the sites often have hundreds and thousands of files and my ftp programs keep bombing out.

I'm on a mac os x intel. Is there some program or command line method/utility to make this process easier?

Transfer Large Sites To New Host

Mar 5, 2007

Compared to others my sites may not be that big but I have one site that is 5 gigs and another that is about 9 gigs. I was wonder what is the best or most recommend way to transfer these sites to a new host.

I tried downloading the whole site using FireFtp but always seem to get about 3rd of the way done and something messes up the conection. Are there any better tools or methods to do this.

I also have pretty large Dbs that I'll need to transfer as well.

FTP Transfer Between 2 Servers, Which Is The Best Way. Not CPanel

Jul 27, 2008

I've just purchased a dedicated server from singlehop, very nice people, even sunday, reply ticket in 15 mins as promised, very happy, thanks Dan, Sam, Azi, I've been asking question all day, and eventually got my server set up.

I've got a question though, a few websites which hosted in a shared server, they don't use cPanel. How can I move files from there to my server? My server is linux system. Sam told me use FTP software, I tried FlashFTP, logged in 2 servers, but can't transfer files, don't know what reason.

Does anyone has a better idea to move all my website? I can ZIP them all. Just don't want to download and upload, can I move directly? In windows, we can use download software download directly by http links, can we do the same, how?

How To Move Sites/servers With No Downtime

They are moving from cpanel servers to my cpanel servers, so the moving part is easy enough, but how should I proceed to have no or very little downtime?

Slow Transfer Speeds Between Two Win 2008 Servers

Apr 4, 2008

I have two servers running windows 2008(rtm) and I'm getting just crappy transfer speeds between them.

server 1:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
dynamic mirrored disks (windows software raid, ick i know
hyper-V, 6 or so VMs, not real heavy load

server 2:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
3ware 9650Se raid card, raid1 (using latest engineering drivers/firmware)

The servers are connected to each other via gigabit crossover. When I start to do a file transfer (a 40gb virtual machine, through windows file sharing) it starts fast. 60+MB/s says 12minutes remain but after 5minutes and 5gb or so of transfer it's slowed way down to 7MB/s and the network usage graph that was smooth and is now choppy.

Cannot Bring Up Any Sites After Moving All Accounts To New Servers

Oct 21, 2007

We recently moved all our hosting accounts from our servers to new servers with a new host. In the process of this move, after moving all the domains and setting the nameserver ips to the new ips, none of the sites are pulling up. I changed the ip for all nameservers to the ones provided to me by the new host but we cannot figure out why the sites are not pulling up, he says everything on his end is fine? Talking about 100+ clients who have been down for over a day now after changing the nameservers and cannot figure out whats going on. All we did was set the ips on my current nameservers to the new ips below.

Now they are claiming they can bring the sites up, but none of the clients I have talked to can bring them up. Also I cannot bring up any domains or ping them from my home or work.

Example domains that are not working that were moved:
bluetongueskinks.net
pokemongamesnow.com

The 204.16.247.150/~username works fine.
See 204.16.247.150/~pokemon

The accounts transferred over fine in WHM. We were using a dns redirect in WHM on the old server before changing nameservers to make sure it pulled them all up fine.

ips for the nameservers 204.16.247.150 and 204.16.244.150.

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Some Sites Load Slow, Some Sites Load Fine, Server Load Is Fine

Aug 12, 2008

I'm having the oddest issue. For some reason, some of the websites on my server load fine, and some take a really long time to load (2 minutes).

Now, the server load is fine, and the size of the sites aren't the issue either. I've restarted Apache and a couple more services, and still the same sites seem to load very slow.

What could be causing this since it's only effecting certain websites?

Load Balancing 2 Web Servers And 2 MySQL Servers

Mar 28, 2008

I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer.

I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat).

Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server.

111.222.111.222 (Main IP)
111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP)
111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP)
If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes.
If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes.

Is it possible to do this?

If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so)

Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

Renting Colocated Servers As Dedicated Servers

Oct 11, 2009

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

DNS Transfer

Sep 25, 2007

I have a client who has transferred her domain to my reseller account. The dns settings are all showing as being to my server:

Problem 1 is that she can't see the new site. She is seeing a very old site (not her last one) on her PC even though she has done a full refresh and cleared out her temporary internet files.

Problem 2 is that her emails aren't working. I can set up my computer to receive emails from her domain, and even though she is using exactly the same settings in Outlook it will not work for her (she has sent me screen shots so I know she it putting in the information correctly).

I am at a loss about what to do with these two issues. She knows that others are not seeing the same site as her, but is getting frustrated and I'm afraid that it is affecting my credibility with her.

I have submitted a support ticket to my provider (8 hours ago) and have not received a resopnse yet

How Many Sites Are Too Many

May 18, 2009

I have a pretty beefy VPS (1 Gb RAM, equal share Intel xeon Quad core processor), but I have no idea how many other VPS's are sharing that processor.

Is there any way to know that? I'm guessing the hosting company (Future Host - very happy with them btw) isn't going to tell me.

Right now my stats are pretty low, but how many individual cPanel accounts (1 site each) before it starts to bog down? I know it depends largely on the traffic, but is 20-30 low-volume sites a lot for a VPS with 1Gb ram?

Can I Have 2 Different NS's For Different Sites On My VPS

Aug 14, 2007

I have a few personal sites one server and my business sites on another. I was thinking of moving the personal ones to my business VPS (to save money) but I don't want someone to be able to do a NS or IP search on one group and find the others or see that they're related in any way. (I had a weird experience with a business contact contacting me via a personal site that he found by a NS search. That's why they're on another server now.)

Is is possible to add a second NS (another domain) on separate IPs to handle the personal sites, and my current NS handle the biz sites? Or should I just keep them on two different servers?

I thought maybe I could make the personal sites into their own reseller account and do a new NS that way, but if there's an easier way I'd rather do that.

I know a guy who has about 10 domains on the same IP and each of the domains uses its domain name as its own NS. I think the term he used was NS aliasing. I think it was all done by changing the DNS stuff in WHM. I tried to do what he said but it didn't work for me. Also I'm not sure how to handle the registrar part. They want two separate IPs for the NS, but he's using only one.

How Do I Transfer My Reseller?

Mar 22, 2007

So I've got a reseller account set up with about 71 individual accounts created under it. What's the easiest way to create a backup of the reseller account (including all accounts created under it) and send it to my new VPS? I have SSH enabled on the reseller and root access on the VPS.

Rsync seems somewhat intimidating but maybe I'm looking at it all wrong. I have limited command line experience. Maybe someone can shed some light on this for me? I'd like to have a method that I can get familiar with and re-use.

What Is Domain Transfer?

May 30, 2008

What does the concept of transferring a domain mean? I am asking all this because I have seen that freehostia has a service called: Domain transfer. It seems that it cost 9.95$. Then I would like to know what is the purpose of this domain transfer. I just thought that this domain transfer was the service provided for those who wanted to host a site in freehostia but had registered their domain with another company instead of with freehostia. What do you think about this?

Well, I have seen this choice of transfering a domain in another site called: http://www.bluereef.net/support/serverbasics/dns.html

So, could you help me understand the purpose and use of the service called transfering a domain that these two hosting providers mentioned above have?
