Nov 8, 2009
My question is > What is the difference between the Servers Data transfer (Bandwidth) and TV Channel signal?
Why No Company use Satellite to transfer data via servers ? Like TV Channel ? then i think we will have real unlimited Bandwidth,

i came across this
Simply put, bandwidth refers to how much data can be transferred at a time. Data transfer relates to how much data is actually being transferred. Think of it this way: If bandwidth were a bridge, then the bigger the bridge, the more vehicles can pass over it. Data transfer, on the other hand, can be compared to the number of vehicles allowed on the bridge in a given period of time.
and i access to my web host manager
i see there view bandwidth usage link
so it shows usage in percentages....(increases as month passes...)
so if we go by defination, is it really bandwidth they are showing or is it data transfer they are showing to us...?
(bandwidth refers to how much data can be transferred at a time,so it is fixed ...means if 3gb is given ....then it cannot be said 80% of 3gb used.....here 3gb should mean any data higher than 3gb cannot pass ...though this site at an instance ...isn't that...)
And why is data transfer not so used term in webhosting if it that important ...means i have not seen many people saying 500gb datatransfer rather than saying 500gb bandwidth...(as it seems completely different from defination...)
From defination, data transfer seems to be more important than bandwidth...

Do you have a website or have you been involved in hosting a website for your company or some of your friends? Then you should have heard about the terms Bandwidth and Data transfer. Often there is confusion in understanding both these terms.
Bandwidth is the capacity of the network or the server that hosts the website, to send data at a moment. It is the amount of data sent per second from the server. This count more because, if there are many websites in the server and a million hits for the sites the server should be capable of sending that much of data at that moment. If the web server that you host your website has high bandwidth then the users visiting your site would see the pages quickly.
If you refer to the bandwidth there are two numbers separated by "/". The first number indicates the bandwidth that is allowed to send data and the second number indicates the bandwidth allowed to receive data. In most of the cases the bandwidth to send data is less than the bandwidth to receive data.
Data transfer is the amount of data that is sent by the server over a period of time.
For example the monthly data transfer allowed for a particular site might be 1GB. This means that the website account is allowed to transfer data from their website for only 1GB per month.
Consider that you have a page in your website that is of size 100kb. If this page is visited 100 times per month, then the data transfer added to your account would be 10 MB due to this page alone. Hence to minimize the data transfer it is always better to minimize the file size of the web page. This can be done in many ways.
You should know that a web page contains not only text but also media content such as images, sounds, videos, and downloadable files. When you create your web page you should keep in mind that you optimizing all these files so that the page loads quickly and the data transfer is kept at the minimum. That is why most of the photos related sites have thumbnail pictures so that they can reduce the data transfer due to the main page and the user is allowed to download the actual image only if they are interested in seeing that image.
While hosting a website with a service provider most of us tend to see only the features that are available for your hosting and the web space that is provided for your plan.
The cost to the web hosting company due to these are very less when compared to the cost due to data transfer.
If you know that you website is going to attract a lot of visitors to it, then you should go for an account or plan that has more data transfer per month. This would save you a lot of money. So the next time you purchase a web hosting plan keep an eye on the Data Transfer allowed for your plan.

when you are going to own racks in a data center and it's time to get an amount of bandwidth,Data center offered three choices (commited bandwidth - dedicated bandwidth - shared bandwidth).
i need help from every one here to show me the difference and give me more info about its prices, benefits and the suitable amount in MB.
I used to buy dedicated bandwidth in Europe data centers but the sitiuation is different in USA as the dedicated is more expensive.

I have VPS account that is controlled my VM management, and VPS runs with WHM/cPanel.
When I login to VM control, it shows that I spent 9.5 Gb of traffic this month. When I check bandwidth in WHM it says 1.2 Gb!
Now, what do you think, which one is correct, and why there is so big difference?

I know you get what you pay for with hosting, but with the ridiculous overselling going on I am finding it hard to work out how much bandwidth I can genuinely expect to get with about 500MB space and 99%+ (preferably more like 99.5%) uptime for $5/month.
I will be using all this bandwidth for hosting legal mp3s (sanctioned for promotional use by labels and artists), and would prefer the host to be based in the US or UK.

I am undergoing "amazing" Bandwidth thief issue. My Server is using very high bandwidth from last 7 days -
On Scanning server, i found following
1) Roundcube mail script was compromised and used by some hacking group, so i deleted that directory all together
2) I disabled Hotlinking all together
3) I found "Live Chat" script also being compromised, and found movies (.dat files) in
it amounting to 20 GB++ , i also deleted that directory
4) I have checked for each and every file, with size more than 30 MB on server.
5) I have also switched off FTP service (and there is no other user on server too)
6) After all this, i even installed "mod_bandwidth" and limited bandwidth service to 10 KBPS across domain directory
Then, i installed MRTG graphs to analyze the issue, and to my SURPRISE, nothing changed, it still used very high bandwidth, after few - few hours.
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/511/indexday.png
^^ the above image shows B/W goes upto 10 MBPS and thus breaks network.
I am now tired and exhausted of this. Can someone here, please give an expert advice on this issue?

I've just purchased a dedicated server from singlehop, very nice people, even sunday, reply ticket in 15 mins as promised, very happy, thanks Dan, Sam, Azi, I've been asking question all day, and eventually got my server set up.
I've got a question though, a few websites which hosted in a shared server, they don't use cPanel. How can I move files from there to my server? My server is linux system. Sam told me use FTP software, I tried FlashFTP, logged in 2 servers, but can't transfer files, don't know what reason.
Does anyone has a better idea to move all my website? I can ZIP them all. Just don't want to download and upload, can I move directly? In windows, we can use download software download directly by http links, can we do the same, how?

I am manually transferring sites from an old server to a new one. Currently I am downloading them to my local computer and reuploading them, which is of course much slower than transferring them between server to server.
I have root access on both servers. Can someone elaborate on the best FTP command to use to transfer them? Or is there a good FTP client for linux which would make it easier for me to do this?

I have a debian box, and have archived a gallery in to a .tar file, 5.77gb.
I have a centOS box, and have used wget to bring the data file over to the new server.
However upon doing so it only detects it as 1.8gb when it starts downloading.
I have terminal access to both servers, just trying to bring my files over from one server to another.

One of my Cpanel servers is showing heavy data transfer this month. In 6 days, it crossed 600 GB data transfer which is equal to what it did last month. Also, all the websites collectively have only consumed around 60 GB data transfer in 6 days. How do I find out what exactly is causing heavy data transfer?

I have 2 servers connected privately..
The servers have a public and private ip.
For transfer privately bandwidth is not counted.
I wanted to know how to transfer data between 2 private servers?
Also is it possible to have symlink from one server to another (both servers connected privately also).

I have two servers running windows 2008(rtm) and I'm getting just crappy transfer speeds between them.
server 1:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
dynamic mirrored disks (windows software raid, ick i know
hyper-V, 6 or so VMs, not real heavy load
server 2:
dual xeon quad core
8gb ram
3ware 9650Se raid card, raid1 (using latest engineering drivers/firmware)
The servers are connected to each other via gigabit crossover. When I start to do a file transfer (a 40gb virtual machine, through windows file sharing) it starts fast. 60+MB/s says 12minutes remain but after 5minutes and 5gb or so of transfer it's slowed way down to 7MB/s and the network usage graph that was smooth and is now choppy.

how to limit the amount of data transfered for a single client in a share hosting scenario using Windows 2003/2008 and NOT using a off-the-shelf control panel.
Within IIS you can limit the number of connections and throttle the transfer rate, but I don't see how to limit the amount of data transferred.
Are the Control Panels monitoring the log files and totaling the amount of data transferred or is there another way to implement data transfer limits?
