Upgrade Xeon 2800 To Opteron 265
Mar 13, 2008Is that a good upgrade? The xeon is going on three years old now and is starting to show it's age. I did search here and google but found no real comparison between the two.

I've had a dual Opteron 285 (dual core 2.6ghz) server with Layered Tech for the last couple of years, and I have a nice offer for a Core2Duo e8400 machine.
Currently my sites generates an average of one thousand simultaneous connections -- will the Core2Duo 8400 be more responsive than the two Opterons 285?
if these were decent pricing for the following dedicated servers:
DUAL QUAD-CORE XEON
2x XEON 5345 (8x 2.33ghz)
2GB FB-DDR2 667 RAM
250GB HDD
THIS CONFIG - $350 / mo
DUAL DUAL-CORE OPTERON 285

SINGLE QUAD CORE Q6600
1x Core 2 Quad (4x 2.40ghz)
2GB DDR2 1066 RAM
250GB HDD
THIS CONFIG - $200 / mo
They are all listed as 10mbit unmetered and they show the following for their providers:
Qwest, MCI/Verizon, Savvis and BTN
Does it seem about right? I'm new to hosting and just wanted to make sure that it is decent pricing.
Which is the better performer?
(1x) Quad Core Intel Xeon X3220 2.40GHz 2x4M Cache
OR
(2x) Dual Core AMD Opteron 2216 2.4GHz 2X1MB Cache 1Ghz HyperTransport
This is for a web/application server running, Windows 2003 Server Professional, IIS, MySQL, MSSQL 2005 Express, Plesk 8.5. The price is about the same.

Dual XEON or Dual Opteron 2212 Dual Core Processor?
Also, any advice on suggested RAM, partitioning, OS, etc. are welcome. Current MySQL version used is 4.1.21.
We are going to buy 2 servers. One will be a Apache webserver (PHP, ZendPlatform) and other will run MySQL.
which one is better Dual Xeon or Dual Opteron? Below are the available options.

The only main difference I see between 2848 (48 ports) and 2650 (48 ports) is the vast difference in thoroughput and switching capacity, 2848 (Throughput: Up to 69.8 mpps; Switching capacity: 96 Gbps) having a higher capacity and 2650 (Throughput: 10.1 million pps; Routing/switching capacity: 13.6 Gbps).
So now, if there is a public switch for http/ftp/ssh and private switch for backups and there are about 35 servers connected to each switch, does it make sense if I go with 2800 for the private switch and 2600 for the public?
The basis of my conclusion is that on a public port with limited bandwidth, a user cannot continuously push close to 100mbps for long before running out of bandwidth. But on a private switch where the user has unlimited bandwidth and can push 100mbps continuously for longer periods and some of the users on the private switch might also have 1gbps port access.
Anyone know where i can find a benchmark that can compare the two processors? Im trying to figure out if a Dual Opteron 275 (Dual-Core) or the Dual Opteron 2212 (Dual-Core) would be better for the money. Or if you have any experiance with the 2 processors can i get your comments on both.

I am going to buy a new server and I am unsure of which route to take.
Basically the cost is identical for a Dell server with:
1 AMD Operton Dual Core 2.4Ghz
OR
2 AMD Operton Dual Core 2.0Ghz
What is the felling? Does the 4 cores out weight the extra 400 mhz per processor, but only having 2 cores?
The server will be running:
Windows 2003 Standard x32
Plesk 8.2
IIS 6.0 [ Application Pools Setup ]
MySQL
Microsft SQL Express 2005 [ONLY CAN USE 1 CPU/CORE]
MailEnable
Can my applications even handle/utilize four cores?
Softlayer is pricing these both the same, and I've been a big fan of the
x3220 for a long time now. I haven't been able to fine ANY reasonably priced servers that can out perform the x3220 in computational ability.
That said, does anyone have any figures that would suggest the 5410 is better?
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 5410 - 2.33GHz (Harpertown) - 1 x 12MB cache
vs
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 3220 - 2.40GHz (Kentsfield) - 2 x 4MB cache
Clearly the cache is bigger, but for me, it's about speed and computation.
I can't find any references to the x5410 in the VPS vs Dedicated thhread.
I would like to compare a Dual Xeon 3Ghz HT with a single Quad Xeon 2.4Ghz. Does tperformance difference worth $60 month plus?

Intel Quad Core Xeon X3210 vs Dual-Core 3040 Xeon
I just ordered a dell server a few days ago and have noticed in addition to a free harddrive upgrade I now have an upgraded processor for the same price.
PE860 Quad-Core Xeon X3220 2.4GHz/2x4MB 1066FSB (105W)
Free Processor Upgrade to QC Xeon 5320
The question for me is which is better? The previous processor was the low energy 105W one which suited me fine as I'm co-locating this to a DC where they are very strict on power consumption.
Is this one going to provide a noticable performance increase over the first? Is it a major power hog?
There's something I've always wondered, what makes a Xeon a Xeon?
For instance, what is the difference between a Core 2 Quad Q9300 and a Quad-Core Xeon E5420. Both are quad core, have a 1333MHz FSB, run at 2.5GHz, have SSE4.1, any all the specs seem identical.
Only difference I see is the Xeon has 12MB cache compared to the Q9300's 6MB.
But generally speaking, what makes a Xeon such much better for a server environment than a Core 2 processor.
How much difference is there between the 248 and 270. If I upgrade from 248 to the 270 will I notice much difference?

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust recently while browsing Newegg and Ebay, I realized I could build a great server consisting of Dual Opteron 270's to 280's with Dual HDD's, Great Asus 1U Barebones Setup , 4GB of Ram for about $650 if I went with used CPU's
Now I don't know about you, but that sounds like quite the bang for the buck. Also considering I have an aggregate bandwidth commitment, and only pay $50 per server I add to my rack, it really isn't a huge downside to say build three of these rather then one Harpertown setup.
Well at least this is my opinion. I was curious to see what others opinions are. I figure with the up and coming cloud technology, and the high prices of new technology, this would be a good investment, but do you think it is worth it to build outdated hardware? Would I be better off just building higher spec servers? How do these servers stack up to some of the newer technology? Are they still considered poewrful?
Anyways just thought I would get some opinions before I went and bought a bunch of outdated hardware
I got new server
AMD Opteron 1216
4 GB RAM
cpanel/whm
it's completely new and no domains
just thought what would be the best my.cnf and http.conf settings for this box
Assuming that in feature there will be sites with forum databases
Both are using 2GB RAM with sata disks. Will run CentOS on it for normal shared hosting.
Which one do you suggest?
There always seems to be some Quality issues with the Nvidia chipsets, so I was looking at getting some feedback on boards if any of you have been using anything else yet.
Normally I only use Tyan for server builds but the only alternative to Nvidia chipset is the Thunder h2000M (S3992-E).
I'm looking for stability #1, performance #2
I'm looking for something non Nvidia but simular to the "TYAN S4989WG2NR Quad 1207(F)" as far as features.

which CPU are you going with? which one is the strongest and which one is the weakest?
about the power usage, I guess we can compare E6400 and X2-4200 only? which one is using less power?
I just purchased my first Opteron 248 (normally use 170's). The reboot time is about 20 minutes. The 170's reboot in under 5 minutes.
I watched it reboot through IPMI and it says:
PXE-M0F No DHCP or ProxyDHCP offers were received.
PXE-M0F: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
Then it retries to connect to DHCP over and over for about 15 minutes before finally starting the normal boot process.
Is this normal? The data center is telling me it is, but I find it hard to believe anything would take that long to boot on a new system.
Which is a better option? Both priced same, I know with the Xeon 5310 the possibility of upgrading to dual cpu's.
