Reboot Time On A Opteron 248
Mar 9, 2007
I just purchased my first Opteron 248 (normally use 170's). The reboot time is about 20 minutes. The 170's reboot in under 5 minutes.
I watched it reboot through IPMI and it says:
PXE-M0F No DHCP or ProxyDHCP offers were received.
PXE-M0F: Exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent
Then it retries to connect to DHCP over and over for about 15 minutes before finally starting the normal boot process.
Is this normal? The data center is telling me it is, but I find it hard to believe anything would take that long to boot on a new system.

What's an acceptable time for rebooting a machine?
I send an email to midphase to get my machine rebooted and I wait nearly half an hour. Even put 911.
Pacifirack would have got it done in under 5 minutes

I have a problem with the server time, when I reboted the server, the time change 4 hours back. Only the time changed not the time zone.
To solve this, I have to sync the time from WHM and then it get the correct time.

I am going to buy a new server and I am unsure of which route to take.
Basically the cost is identical for a Dell server with:
1 AMD Operton Dual Core 2.4Ghz
OR
2 AMD Operton Dual Core 2.0Ghz
What is the felling? Does the 4 cores out weight the extra 400 mhz per processor, but only having 2 cores?
The server will be running:
Windows 2003 Standard x32
Plesk 8.2
IIS 6.0 [ Application Pools Setup ]
MySQL
Microsft SQL Express 2005 [ONLY CAN USE 1 CPU/CORE]
MailEnable
Can my applications even handle/utilize four cores?

This is a rare issue i have on a RHEL 5.2 + cPanel server.
Server time is:
Tue Nov 11 17:02:51 CST 2008
Squirrelmail time show:
Code:
Last Refresh:
Tue, 5:02 pm
So, that is correct too..
But email arrives with -4 hours time, example:
webmaster@xxx.com 1:03 pm testing email
I already rebooted httpd, exim, and imap server, and the server itself too.. and problem stills.

I can't get access to a certain site. I always get the page with:
network time out - server at *** takes to long to respons. More people have noticed this and apparently it only happens to people with certain specific providers. And not all the time. Some times they DO get access eventy to they belong to the same ISP. So I guess an ISP isn't blocking access to it otherwise it would be permenantly/The site administrator insists that certain ISP's are blocking his site. He's hosting it on his own server. The domain belongs is registered at namecheap.com.
If an ISP is blocking this site (if that's possible?), that would lead to that 'network timeout' page wouldn't it?
What is the most likely reason for getting a timeout page anyway?

Just recently while browsing Newegg and Ebay, I realized I could build a great server consisting of Dual Opteron 270's to 280's with Dual HDD's, Great Asus 1U Barebones Setup , 4GB of Ram for about $650 if I went with used CPU's
Now I don't know about you, but that sounds like quite the bang for the buck. Also considering I have an aggregate bandwidth commitment, and only pay $50 per server I add to my rack, it really isn't a huge downside to say build three of these rather then one Harpertown setup.
Well at least this is my opinion. I was curious to see what others opinions are. I figure with the up and coming cloud technology, and the high prices of new technology, this would be a good investment, but do you think it is worth it to build outdated hardware? Would I be better off just building higher spec servers? How do these servers stack up to some of the newer technology? Are they still considered poewrful?
Anyways just thought I would get some opinions before I went and bought a bunch of outdated hardware

There always seems to be some Quality issues with the Nvidia chipsets, so I was looking at getting some feedback on boards if any of you have been using anything else yet.
Normally I only use Tyan for server builds but the only alternative to Nvidia chipset is the Thunder h2000M (S3992-E).
I'm looking for stability #1, performance #2
I'm looking for something non Nvidia but simular to the "TYAN S4989WG2NR Quad 1207(F)" as far as features.

I'm considering two hardware options for a server.
2 x AMD Opteron 265 (1.8 GHz clock speed x 4)
2 GB ram, 2 x 160 GB RAID 1, Windows 2008
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (2.6 GHz clock speed x 2)
2 GB ram, 2 x 160 GB RAID 1, Windows 2008
Which hardware should be better to run a Mail server, IIS, MySQL and a few other http based services?
The X2 5000+ is around $8 more than the Dual Opteron 265 per month.

Which one is better?
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz goes with 2GB RAM
and
Dual Opteron 246 2.0 Ghz goes with 4GB RAM
I use this server for a little big forum with about 16,000 member, 300 members + visitors online everytime and 2 more sites (small sites).
One more question, Is 10Mbps switch port or 100Mbps switch port affected to speed?

We are using the SC512L-260B chassis for our lower end machines, what is a good recommendation for say Dual Opteron or Dual Woodcrest servers?
Looking 1U that will handle 2 drives, but would also like a recommendation for going with 4 drives (would this require 2U?). Hot swap not necessary.

Which one do you prefer?
- dual opteron 252 / 2GB RAM DDR / 15K rpm SCSI disk
- core2duo E6400 / 2GB RAM DDR2 / raid-1 sata (raid-edition) disks
It will be used for a big vBulletin forum. Price is around $200 different, core2duo a bit more expensive.

I have a dedicated server specs: AMD 3500+ 64 Bit CPU, 1 GB Ram, 160 GB Sata Drive. For 1 month, CPU load average reaches 40-50 value. This happens about 5-6 times in a day. When I stop httpd service for 30 seconds everything goes normal. I think this is not a DoS attack because it comes systematic, I dont believe no one makes this regularly except bots.
Maybe its a system service or a cronjob but it stops when I turn off httpd service?
How can I be sure about what's making this regularly load?
I also did set up a script which mail me when load average of system goes crazy and restart httpd service. But instant restart is not working to stop load increase.

The server is going down from time to time, every 12 days or so the site hosted there is no longer accesible, everything starts with the site slowing don and down and then is not longer reachable, what we do is to request a power cycle, and with this we start all over again till next power cycle, so on so on, of course, here are my server details and more info on this:
- MySQL - 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.10
- Apache - 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.4
- PHP - 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.9
- operating system: Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS
After some time emailing the support guys to barely check about what's going on, we received an email with a few things:
1.- found a few errors that likely would cause issues with Apache. The first error is:
[Mon Feb 04 05:03:10 2013] [error] mod_fcgid: fcgid process manager died, restarting the server and the next error is:
[Mon Feb 04 14:32:34 2013] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting ...
Both these errors seem to indicate that you have a process that is running out of control on your server. We were unable to determine what script on your site is running caused your connections to be maxed out however it does appear that before these errors were generated there was a WordPress plugin referenced in your access logs...
2.- Additionally during our review we did find that your error log for mercadodedinerousa.com is 45 GB's which is excessively large and can cause problems when Apache is trying to write a such a large file.
3.- The majority of the errors being logged are:
[Wed Feb 06 12:12:31 2013] [error] [client 200.76.90.5] Options FollowSymLinks or SymLinksIfOwnerMatch is off which implies that RewriteRule directive is forbidden: /var/www/vhosts/mercadodedinerousa.com/httpdocs/index.pl, referer: [URL]

Currently my sites generates an average of one thousand simultaneous connections -- will the Core2Duo 8400 be more responsive than the two Opterons 285?
