Understanding Hosting Network Connectivity
Apr 26, 2007
1) All VPS hosting services emphasize their high level of network connectivity (Tier 1 etc.) but how to learn about this topic and choose the fastest service?
2) What is really the state of the art and fastest network connectivity available?
3) Is there a map/list of the biggest US network hubs and which web hosts are connected to them?
4) Is the old ping response time the best metric to verify a web host speed connectivity?
5) Is there an indipendent and unbiased website that reviews and report web hosts ping response times?

There are several methods of offering network path redundancy. The basic decision for me has come down to:
Do it at Layer 2
Do it at Layer 3
At the moment we have layer 2 redundancy to each server. 2NICs on the server up with one having the IPs for apache/mysql/etc. each nic going into a seperate switch and the switches connected together, with 2 routers running VRRP to handle the gateway.
Everything is Vlaned.
So basicaly the switch redundancy is done by spanning tree and the IP redundancy is done with a process on the router/server to move the IP to the other router/server NIC if there is an issue.
I am thinking about going with 2 fully seperate networks. in differant subnets. where each router would have a gateway. the routers would talk to each other and they would speak OSPF or ISIS with the servers. This way I would move hosting onto loopback IPs on the servers and those loopback IPs would be advertised to the both routers through seperate networks.
Again everything would be Vlanned.
This has the advantage of getting rid of spanning tree which has caused issues from time to time. It would keep redundancy up and we could standardize on the routing daemon ran on the servers allowing all of the various OSs we run to have the same basic config for network redundancy. Where now each OS tends to have its own solution. This would make life easier from a config and troubleshooting point of view.

I am interested in finding out any experiences people have had in the last year or so with Savvis or Net2EZ.
I'm primarily interested in experience with the IP connectivity they provide, as well as their co-location, reliability, etc.
I have experience with Savvis from quite a while ago, but presumably that experience may no longer apply.
It's likely we will end up buying transit from multiple carriers and deal with BGP, etc.
But I am also interested in hearing about Savvis's Diverse Internet availability product.
As for Net2EZ, I'd be primarily interested in hearing about their colo services and if anyone has had experience connecting to Carriers in the next door Equinix facility.

I have a requirement for a set of servers to be deployed worldwide on 1 or more anycast networks. Rather than re-invent the wheel and do our own thing, I was wondering if anyone knows of any hosting companies that have data centres/facilities around the world and will provide ip space on anycasted ip's to be used at these facilities? There are content delivery network providers renting cdn space, so the networks exist.

Any comments on Network Solutions as a hosting service?
I have never created a website and would rather not have to deal with coding and all that stuff. I planning a very basic site, but I want it to look good.
It seems Network Solutions has a really nice and easy-to-use web page software package.
But then again I have no idea what's really going on.

I recently signed up with Limestone Networks after dealing with Ipower's nonsense for so many years
[url]read it, it's kind of funny in a horrific kind of way )
I was impressed with the detail and attention I got with all of my questions- Talk with Ryan - he's such a helpful and upfront person if you are looking for a good dedicated server.
They may not be the cheapest out there, I wouldn't know but from the amount of SUPPORT I received even before I signed up made it worthwhile for me.

the original domain registrar itself finally joins the VPS fray. Just saw this on their website:
[url]
After roughly a year or so (I think) of offering the hosting we all know, looks like they've finally decided it's time to take the next step.
(to think I'll be moving my domain name away from them next month...)

Just wanted to share my experiences with you once again. There are a select number of companies on this planet that really seem to go out of the way to be obnoxiously bad at their jobs. Comcast, AIG, United Airlines - the familiar litany. Well, my experience with online hosting would put Network Solutions right up there with those in competition for the title 'Worst Company in America.'
Here's the current problem. Yesterday, May 14, 2009, at about 6:00AM, one of my users reported that my site had come up with a malware/virus alert on his computer. This was odd, as I am not a malware host. Further, my work computer had been infected the day before, though I had only visited reputable news sites; and my own site.
Lo and behold, upon investigation I found that my site had been hacked to carry the FakeAlert-CL trojan, which had the effect of causing my computer to pretend it had been badly hacked to get me to buy some spurious anti-virus software. Essentially, buying "protection" in the Mafia sense.
Luckily for me, this is not my first rodeo with Network Solutions' laughable excuse for security. This exact same thing had happened 18 months or so ago. I realized then that a worm had infected NS's shared hosting servers, and had changed every file with "index" anywhere in the title to include an < iframe > tag linking to a malware site (from which the computer would be infected).
So here's my workaround. I downloaded and repaired the three index files which control my site. I then deleted the infected files, and re-uploaded clean ones. Being prudent, and having experience with this, I also uploaded *backup* copies with different file names. This proved wise. NS has now been hacked 3 times in the last 18 hours in the exact same way. Each time I get hacked again, I simply delete the infected 'index' file and rename my backup to replace it, then upload a new backup for later use.
Some notes: this has affected my entire Movable Type system by corrupting the templates. However, it attacks only the base index.php file; if you simply fix that one file, then rebuild your Movable Type database, the offending code snippet will be removed. Secondarily, some sections of my site (my bulletin board, for instance) do not have 'index' in the title of their operative files. If I could remove every index file from my site and rename them, I would, but unfortunately too many of the components are hard-wired for that name. Finally, I tried CHMODing the index files to 444, which should have prevented even an Administrator from overwriting or changing them, but it had no effect.
So, back to NS. I contacted a person from NS' marketing department (who contacted me after I posted a previous complaint on this board) and let him know that I had been hacked. He told me he was referring me to "third level support" (meaning what? they speak better English?). I have since been hacked twice more, and have emailed this same PR guy both times. The last time I asked for a phone call; no shock, I have not yet heard back. Maybe this post will prompt a response.
At any rate, to those of you experiencing this with Network Solutions, hopefully my solution will help you. To those of you considering a hosting provider, DO NOT CHOOSE NETWORK SOLUTIONS.

im trying to remotely install WS2003 EE R2 on a dedicated server I have purchased and have an issue. I'm installing it via KVM IP which is cool
however, after installing the network card drivers, I get a "There is no or limited connectivity" etc... so I cannot access the internet or anything on that box.
what do I do from here? how can I make the card work? It is configured to obtain the IP Address automatically as well as using the default DNS. I do have 2 IP Addresses "assigned" to me/my account but dont believe I need to configure them in WS2003?

is anyone else having trouble with burst.net at the moment? from two locations, i'm having problems where anything that will elicit a large response just hangs indefinitely. i can ping my server just fine, i can shell into it... if i do "top" or "dmesg" or anything else that might dump back more than a few lines of response at a time, the ssh session hangs. i can do "ps x" as a regular user, because i only have two processes running. "ps ax" will hang ssh.
none of my websites work, and i can't get on the burst.net website from either location. i tried calling but no matter what sequence i try for (even tried reboots) i can't get ahold of a live person, but then again it is almost midnight.
anyone else experiencing this?

I have tested so many compagny I can't even remember and with all of thoses compagny my customers had lagg pikes or this kind of things.
I am hosting a gameserver service which required a top connectivity , most of my customers are in europe and I looked for the best dedicated provider in europe.
I tested OVH , ngz-server , bestserver.eu and much more but it was the same problem.
If someone know a good dedicated server provider in europe using premium bandwidth with good carier and not only with peerings .
I have looked a bit at serverboost.nl they seems serious but I have no feedback about them.
If you have any provider with a top connectivity it would help me a lot to choose what deserve my customers.
A DDos protection is a must also (not for bigg ddos but littles one ).

If yes, what's the procedure for setting this up?

I have a 1u server that I'm looking to colo. I looked around the forums but I can't seem to find exactly what I need.
I'd prefer if the hosting company was large, owned its own datacenter (as opposed to leasing), offered proactive (automated) monitoring services, remote reboot, and a superb network with little or no downtime.
I like liquidweb but it looks like they only have 500gb / month up and down or a dedicated line capped at 10mbps line. I need something in between, around 1000GB / month up and down with 100mbps port. Support doesn't really matter, nor does price.

We have a VPS with Media Temple. Their data center is somewhere on the westcoast. From time to time we have severe issues to connect from our Brooklyn/NY locations. We experienced the connectivity issue from 2 physical locations. Doing a tracert gave us a good result.
There are usually 4-8 users using our shop admin for order processing or the shopping cart for manual order entry. While they are having problems connecting from there, I can connect just fine from Calgary/AB, Canada. Most of the time no issues at all.
how to debug that?

Is anyone having a problem with Intermedia's Hosted Sharepoint (WSS 3.0) Service? For the past couple days I've had sporadic service. Finally today, None of my pc's can get to my hosted sharepoint site. I even tried my site from 3 other locations, all with different ISP's, networks, and even geographic locations. (2 Corporate spots in OKC, Tulsa, Dallas).
Anyways their tech support says they can log in fine, and it's just a problem with my ISP. (I tried to emphasis the fact that it's 4 different ISP's all having the same issue).
Ping's good, I even get an authentication window. Just when I put in credentials I get The connection was interrupted.
Anyways phone support could only offer to open a ticket for me. Can anyone else using Intermedia Hosted Sharepoint let me know if they too are having problems? I realize Hosted Email is probably working fine.

I want to use scp to backup files, however I find most tutorials confusing as to which computer is the remote and the local. Is the local the one you are logged into via ssh command, or the computer from which you logged into ssh.
Lets say I am on my Windows computer. I open up putty, and login to the ssh connection of a remote linux computer. What scp command do I enter into the ssh terminal to copy a file from D:ackup of the windows computer to /home/backup of the linux computer?

I am getting ready to install APF, I have read multiple articles, but am still confused with the following parameters and what needs to be included in each:
IG_TCP_CPORTS
IG_UDP_CPORTS
EG_TCP_CPORTS
EG_UDP_CPORTS
These are the ports that I want to use:
21,22,25,53,80,110,143,443,465,873,993,995
How do I know what port goes in what parameter? How do I know if it goes in TCP or UDP and if it goes in Ingress or Egress?
What is the difference between TCP and UDP?
Is it ok to have a port listed in both TCP an UDP, and also in Ingress as well as in Egress?

having my own dedicated server. I have apf installed and I wanted to see how it blocked IPs so I had a friend, whoes IP I knew, help me. I added his IP to the deny_hosts.rules, thinking that would block him from my server, but it did not. Now, mind you, the way I added his IP was to simply use an editor and add his IP to the bottom of the list. Then I got to thinking, does teh apf only load the rules every so often? If so, how can I tell when or how often the rules load? ALso, do I need to add an IP using apr -d IPNUMBER in order for the apf to recognize it? I'd appreciate some info on how the apf works and how I can add IPs myself that I want to add and be sure that they are being blocked.

I am going to place my first physical server to a server room. I wish to use it also as an nameserver for my domains and I am missing some basic principle there. I can probably configure BIND etc, but how will the servers upper in the hierarchy learn that this is a nameserver for certain domains? To start with, I have several empty domains (they are not hosted and so far using nameservers of a big company).

When you can't access your server via SSH or Remote Desktop, what do you use to fix the problem without filing a ticket?
IPMI?
Serial console?
KVM over IP?
Dial up connection?
Backup network connection?
Get up and walk to the server? :-)
If you had a choice between them, what did you pick and why?
Does your dedicated server provider give it to you for free, or do you have to pay extra for it?

I've got a housed server within my customer's datacenter. I consider application runs ok, but it goes very slow.
I consider it's due to their connection (DSL) and installed another provisional server with a simple "Hello World" and no traffic. I'm to install the same server within another datacenter, and would like to find an external tool to certify connectivity times.
Do you know any of these tools? I'm not searching tools like 'Apache AB' or 'HP httperf', but public online services.

I am still trying to diagnose a problem some members have on my forums, when they load a page it will load a grey screen (my background color) and stop, after 15-30 seconds+ it will finally load the page
i opened a ticket with my server co and they forwared it to the NOC, NOC said it was apache config problem, server co said it was fixed and was due to apache log reaching 2GB limit, logrotate installed
same problem still existed, opened tk with server management co, they tweaked httpd.conf and disabled logs, problem still exists
I asked 3rd management co about it, changed some settings in httpd, said it may be due to ads on the sites, i took out the ads and a stat script
problem still exists, the thing is the problem exists with some users and not others, doing speed tests to the server shows it is very quick, load is low, no i/o wait and i just installed the second GB of memory so memory is fine
this is happeneing to users on seperate forums, one using vB, one using IPB, so it is server/ hardware related, AMD barton 3000, with 2GB ram, nowehere reaching the bandwidth limit or 10mbps port speed limit
any ideas? doing tracerts to the server shows a timeout before the sites IP address, every time, but doing a tracert OUT of the server shows no time outs....
