Tyan Motherboard With Supermicro Case

Jun 3, 2007

I purchased a Tyan S3970 (Tomcat h1000e) motherboard with a Supermicro SC820 Case, 'cuz I got a good deal on the combo. After I purchased it I realized that the back-cover does not match up, and the connector wires are short. (ie. The NIC/power LED wires do not reach the connector). Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

Parts To Fit Tyan Mboard And Supermicro Case

Jul 2, 2007

I got a good deal on the Supermicro SC822T-R550LPB case, and then bought a Tyan Motherboard(S3970).

Unfortunately, the IO shield that comes w/the board does not fit the case, and the one from the case does not fit the mboard. A set of FAN cables do not reach the mboard either. Does anyone know of any place that sells these parts?

Tyan Vs Supermicro

Aug 10, 2009

I've been having a look at a lot of boards and Tyan seem to be beating Supermicro in terms of range at scan.co.uk

I've seen some unique features with Supermicro such as Remote KVM and such built into the motherboard, but it only seems to be with the very pricey series unless I'm looking in the wrong direction

Anybody have any thoughts to share about which is the better manufacturer?

What Desktop Motherboard Can Fit This SUPERMICRO CSE-503-200B Black 1U

i like the I/O panel is in the front and not the back. It can be a pain in the butt to access the back I/O panel in the DC.

I'm pretty sure the default SuperMicro panel will have to be take out but is there any motherboard that can fit this case? Did anyone try this case? Can it be bolt down by its ears? It's interesting that i don't see the blower on this case. How do you cool it?

it seems very hard to install centos on this box, i cannot figure out how to do.

i used a network install, and first of all the grub loader gave an error.

i used all standard procedures for install.

i think its the raid controller messing up with it.

Tyan B5161 + M3291 IPMI

Mar 10, 2007

I have here 3 servers of Tyan with M3291 IPMI boards installed. I hooked it up as per instructions of Tyan, but am unable to get it to work.

I have tried contacting Tyan about this, but after a few messages they stopped responding to my questions. I think they are convinced it is working with me....

The setup is;
- Ubuntu 6.1 x86_64
- System BIOS is the original version
- IPMI card is flashed with the correct firmware
- The network port which is shared with the IPMI card has a different IP address then the IPMI card.

Settings IPMI card:
box:~# ./uh8l -d
BMC Utility on Linux For M3291 version 0.9.1
Copyright 2003-2006 TYAN Computer Corp.
IPMI Ver: 2.0 Firmware Rev: 0.11 Vendor ID: 6653 Pdt ID: 5161
DHCP Disable
BMC IP Address: 10.0.1.102
MAC Address: 00:E0:81:42:4C:51
Net Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gate Way: 10.0.1.253
Broadcast ARP: Enable

This server has on the IPMI shared port the address 10.0.1.2 ...
When I try to ping the IPMI board from the server itself or from a different server I get an incomplete address in the ARP table;
? (10.0.1.102) at <incomplete> on eth2

(Also after pinging it for 1 minute...)

If I use the IPMI utilities I am unable to contact the board and do anything with the server....
I tried several settings of the IPMI board, including DHCP / ARP on and off...

Does anyone have this combination working, and how did you do this?

Best Motherboard

We currently use Intel motherboards in our dedicated servers, for our customers.

But I wish some advice about these manufacturers. Are they good? As good as intel, or even better? (They are much cheaper than Intel, and uses Intel chipsets)

* Foxconn
* MSI (Microstar)
* Gigabyte
* ASUS

Motherboard Recommendations - OpenVZ

Sep 4, 2008

I bought a dual socket F motherboard and having a hard time getting OpenVZ to run on it. I'm wondering if the board is compatible. It's a Tyan S2932 and the OpenVZ kernel crashes on it. (2.6.24 kernel)

I've flashed the latest bios.

So - thinking about returning the MB and getting something else. What MB is compatible with OpenVZ?

Specs:

2 socket F for quad core opterons.
16 momery slots.

AMD AM2 Motherboard Linux Compatibility

Jul 2, 2007

I have tested the Asus M2N-MX motherboard on CentOS 5, the first 10 worked very well, zero problems and very stable.

My next 10 somehow did not work at all, after speaking to asus techs, I had to stick a 512MB ram module (which does make the motherboard work) and update the bios. Now the 1GB kingston ddr2 modules work fine.

Installed centos, and then to find out that every time the server gets rebooted, ALL eth0 settings are lost. I tested debian on it and same story! The nic is found, but debian is assigning/detecting new MAC's for the nic all the time.

The weird thing is the first batch is working very good!

I have wasted countless hours in trying to get this second batch working with no luck. I am looking to get the gigabyte GA-M61PM-S2 with RTL8211 nic. Anyone who was able to get this one running with centos without any problems?

Recommended Xeon Motherboard

Mar 20, 2007

new xeon motherboard after having nothing but constant problems with the supermicro boards. Specifically we've had many arrive with faulty dimm's but beyond that getting Windows 2003 loaded, dealing with drivers for SCSI raid configurations is simply a bear. Supermicro's support isn't much help either with answers like "well that's the driver, it should work."

Just trying to get some feedback on what others are using. Looking for something that has both SATA and SCSI support with and without RAID 0,1,5 and 10 and has better than average Windows 2003 support.

We're not interested in any of the options from Dell, HP, etc.

Case Fans

Apr 12, 2007

Got a question about cases fans but know someone will have a laugh at me about this.

We have recently moved from 1u supermicro cases to matx cases to lower the general server cost. We realised that we wouldnt fill 2/3 of a rack if we used 1u (16 amps power would be hit) and it was just logical to use matx.

One worry is the heat factor so was looking at some powerful fans. The one place I know where to get them from is our dyanatron supplier but I am left very confused. You always see on fans they use 0.3amp/12v (for example) but how much does that work out to be at the final power usage? this goes for the same in watts. Are fans something you have to worry about in the long run or do they make a non exsiting dent into a racks amp usage?

EATX Case

Sep 26, 2007

I figured this would be the place to ask this question as the parts Im using are ex-server :-))..

Basically, I've purchased an old dual xeon board with matching xeons and I'm after a case. However the motherboard is EATX, and dosent seem to fit any of my ATX cases.

So, what case should I go for? Im trying to make it a cheap as possible.. Also I live in the UK.

I saw, this case. I figured for that price I cant go wrong. But will it fit an EATX?

AM2 Motherboard Recommendation For SC512L-260B

Is there a current motherboard out there that will fit the Supermicro SC512L-260B chassis without modification? I think Foxconn had one recently, but it may have been discontinued.

I know sometimes you have to grind off the the Audio since it is too high for the 1U chassis. I'm hoping maybe ASUS has something that will fit.

8GB On A Motherboard, Inexpensive 8x1gb Or 4x2gb

Feb 10, 2007

I've been having good luck with desktop class systems using boards like the Supermicro PDSMI+. But I have need for a 8gb solution.

2gb DDR2 modules are still in $300 range... so 8gb is costing me 4x as much as 4gb.

4 x 1gb=$300 using Kingston DDR2 from Newegg

Problem is motherboards either have 4 slots or I have to move up to Opteron/Xeon boards.

I'm open on ECC or not, had failues either way

Fans For Server Rack Case

I am wanting to put some fans in the metal cabinet, to bring in cool air, and let out warm air.

Does anyone know where you can find these sorts of fans?

Because the server inside the rack cabinet is closed, I can't use a fan with a Molex connector.

I haven't seen any case fans that use a usb connector, or just a normal power outlet connector.

Second Hosting Account In Case Of Failure

Sep 19, 2008

I'm reeling right now after my shared hosting has been down for more than 24 hours (and this isn't one of the super-cheapies, it's in the $20-$30/month range)

In the future I'd really like to be protected against this kind of outage... I know downtime is inevitable with any host, so I'm wondering if it's possible to have some kind of failover system. Maybe I could get a second account with a bargain basement host (<$10/month) and keep it relatively up to date with a mirror of my site. But I don't know how I could manage the DNS so it went to the second host in the even of a failure on the first....

Does this kind of redundancy exist as some product in the industry that I don't know about (is that what "colocation" is?)? Is it likely that my host has the ability/willingness to redirect my domain (302 or something) in times of trouble like this?
