View 3 Repliessince most dedicated server are just desktop pc. i was wondering what would be a great motherboard and tower for home made server for my own use or possible for colo? perfer enought RAM slot for up to 8gig and onboard SATA RAID controller
View 6 Replies View RelatedIs Motherboard RAID as good as a dedicated PCI-E card? I am guessing a dedicated card is the best option, though costs more.
We are looking at buying a barebones server from Supermicro. It features an onboard RAID controller which supports RAID 0, 1, 5 & 10 - but for some strange reason it will only support RAID 5 if you use Windows. Here is a link to the page detailing the RAID features.
[url]
We are going to be running Linux, CentOS 5.1, so we will only have the choice of RAID 0, 1 or 10. This isn't an issue, as having RAID 10 on 4x SAS (15k) drives will be fine for speed and stability. What is an issue is would this RAID controller be as fast or reliable compared to a dedicated PCI-E card? If it can only use RAID 5 in windows, does that suggest this controller is too reliant on software? It would be a nightmare to suffer downtime and data loss because the controller couldn't hack it during a drive failure, or one day it decided to bugger up the array when rebooting.
So that leads me to looking at this card, this looks very good for what we need. Are adaptec a reliable brand? I've seen it advertised for £200, which is a good price.

This card features RAID 5 and 6, would RAID 6 be better than RAID 10 for redundancy, or is it too slow to bother with? Also it seems to have a battery module available for it, what does this achieve? Cos surely if the power dies the hard drives and motherboard can't run off this little battery, or does it just help the controller stay alive long enough with some hard drive information in its memory if the power goes out during a rebuild?
I'm getting a new site made within the next couple of months and I need a new host for my current site now.
My new site will be a bespoke e-commerce website.
I've been looking at VPS hosting as I've been told it will be faster, and more secure. Just how much more secure is a VPS server? Is it worth it?
I'm currently on a shared host now, and haven't had any problems with the speed/security etc. But I expect my site to grow and get more hits/bandwidth used.
Does anybody have any recommendations for a VPS host? I'm not after a huge amount of bandwidth or webspace, I can't get any details of what I'm currently getting now, hence the change of host, but it's not a huge shop so it shouldn't need much, I'd expect 5/10gb web space and 100gb bandwidth to be sufficient, maybe even less. O ye.. it's just for 1 site only too, so I don't need a control panel to manage other domains if that makes sense.
Main things i'll be after:
I will be sending a lot of Newsletters, I currently have 654 signed up and in the future I'd be wanting to send newsletters 1-2 times per month with double the amount of people signed up now. So I need a server that can handle this. And handle a lot of incoming e-mails, as my current server just ran out of space and stopped incoming mail.
A fast server
Reliable
Half decent customer support
I'm not a guru on all this so some kind of managed service, I won't know what to do if I have to constantly change things, but I don't even know if I'd have to, I just like the thought that somebody is there to sort it if I don't have a clue/goes wrong.
Some kind of control panel to manage e-mail users etc, like on a shared plan.
A secure server.
Something with all the PHP and MYsql database lark so my website will actually work. I don't know exactly what the programmers are using though.
I'm also worried about a company overselling, to me 200gb of bandwidth on vps hosts seems a lot, I don't want to be told I'm getting something then be cut off after I've used 10gb and them going "there is a fair usage policy".
The main reason for this post is my budget, it's only £20/$10 per month. And I'm in the UK if it helps to get a UK host.
If you think I really don't require a vps host and a shared option will be ok and be fast enough, let me know and any recommendations.
Also, would "128MB Dedicated Memory, 512MB Burst Memory" be good enough or is that just rubbish? I take it that just gives the site the operating speed depending on the usage at that time.
We currently use Intel motherboards in our dedicated servers, for our customers.
But I wish some advice about these manufacturers. Are they good? As good as intel, or even better? (They are much cheaper than Intel, and uses Intel chipsets)
* Foxconn
* MSI (Microstar)
* Gigabyte
* ASUS

We have issues installing CentOS on this anyone shed some light on this?
I bought a dual socket F motherboard and having a hard time getting OpenVZ to run on it. I'm wondering if the board is compatible. It's a Tyan S2932 and the OpenVZ kernel crashes on it. (2.6.24 kernel)
I've flashed the latest bios.
So - thinking about returning the MB and getting something else. What MB is compatible with OpenVZ?
Specs:
2 socket F for quad core opterons.
16 momery slots.
Is there any economical motherboard CPU which support 4 physical CPU?

I'm planning on buying my first server. For processor I'll be using either an Opteron or Xeon.
Which motherboard would you suggest I get?
I saw ASUS motherboard for Opteron, but was told that ASUS board is not good enough for a server, what do you think?
I have tested the Asus M2N-MX motherboard on CentOS 5, the first 10 worked very well, zero problems and very stable.
My next 10 somehow did not work at all, after speaking to asus techs, I had to stick a 512MB ram module (which does make the motherboard work) and update the bios. Now the 1GB kingston ddr2 modules work fine.
Installed centos, and then to find out that every time the server gets rebooted, ALL eth0 settings are lost. I tested debian on it and same story! The nic is found, but debian is assigning/detecting new MAC's for the nic all the time.
The weird thing is the first batch is working very good!
I have wasted countless hours in trying to get this second batch working with no luck. I am looking to get the gigabyte GA-M61PM-S2 with RTL8211 nic. Anyone who was able to get this one running with centos without any problems?
new xeon motherboard after having nothing but constant problems with the supermicro boards. Specifically we've had many arrive with faulty dimm's but beyond that getting Windows 2003 loaded, dealing with drivers for SCSI raid configurations is simply a bear. Supermicro's support isn't much help either with answers like "well that's the driver, it should work."
Just trying to get some feedback on what others are using. Looking for something that has both SATA and SCSI support with and without RAID 0,1,5 and 10 and has better than average Windows 2003 support.
We're not interested in any of the options from Dell, HP, etc.
Has anyone installed a motherboard with a Realtek 8111D NIC chipset under CentOS 5.3 yet? If so, did it work out of the box without any drivers?

View 14 Replies View RelatedIs there a current motherboard out there that will fit the Supermicro SC512L-260B chassis without modification? I think Foxconn had one recently, but it may have been discontinued.
I know sometimes you have to grind off the the Audio since it is too high for the 1U chassis. I'm hoping maybe ASUS has something that will fit.
I've been having good luck with desktop class systems using boards like the Supermicro PDSMI+. But I have need for a 8gb solution.
2gb DDR2 modules are still in $300 range... so 8gb is costing me 4x as much as 4gb.
4 x 1gb=$300 using Kingston DDR2 from Newegg
Problem is motherboards either have 4 slots or I have to move up to Opteron/Xeon boards.
I'm open on ECC or not, had failues either way
I purchased a Tyan S3970 (Tomcat h1000e) motherboard with a Supermicro SC820 Case, 'cuz I got a good deal on the combo. After I purchased it I realized that the back-cover does not match up, and the connector wires are short. (ie. The NIC/power LED wires do not reach the connector). Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

i like the I/O panel is in the front and not the back. It can be a pain in the butt to access the back I/O panel in the DC.
I'm pretty sure the default SuperMicro panel will have to be take out but is there any motherboard that can fit this case? Did anyone try this case? Can it be bolt down by its ears? It's interesting that i don't see the blower on this case. How do you cool it?
Has anyone been using a 1333 FSB Core 2 Duo board in the SC512L that will fit without modification? Looking for something for mass use, I know some of the server boards will fit fine, wondering about some of the ASUS or Foxconn boards.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.
( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)
Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:
-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.
- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.
- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:
- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.
I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.
ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".
I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.
My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.

I have dedicated servers - which are overkill as I only host 10 sites (small). I am now looking to move to a VPS solution and would like to know if anyone can recommend a good UK company (that offers true UK hosting) with good uptime and support?
Cpanel and Unix VPS, but may also require windows vps - so a company that offers both will be beneficial, but long term view to migrate over to Linux
does anyone have any views of The NY Noc they could share with me, before I shift my site over there (and hope for the best) ?
I know they've been around a while, but I heard some bad stuff about their VPS servers,
I want to make sure I'm going for some good hosting..
my web site has about 4,000 pageviews and currently working fine on shared host. i plan to build a forum to support my products. i just want to know if the 128 MBs VPS is good plan for my web site?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am considering the following VPS:

Fairshare of a Dual Xeon/Opteron CPU
512 MB Dedicated RAM

Is cheapvps a good provider for cheap vps'?
I searched and didn't find anything.
I need managed services since I don't know anything about server maintenance and I saw LunarHosts VPS (http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/)
The deal sounds pretty good - 1000 GB Bandwidth, 20 GB Space, PHP, MySQL and managed services for $50 a month.
I wanted to know if anybody has tried them out? Are they good? Is their a better value anywhere else?
is GoDaddy any good?
