Fans For Server Rack Case
Oct 6, 2009
I have a 6RU rackmount server cabinet, which I am putting a 1RU server inside.
I am wanting to put some fans in the metal cabinet, to bring in cool air, and let out warm air.
Does anyone know where you can find these sorts of fans?
Because the server inside the rack cabinet is closed, I can't use a fan with a Molex connector.
I haven't seen any case fans that use a usb connector, or just a normal power outlet connector.

Got a question about cases fans but know someone will have a laugh at me about this.
We have recently moved from 1u supermicro cases to matx cases to lower the general server cost. We realised that we wouldnt fill 2/3 of a rack if we used 1u (16 amps power would be hit) and it was just logical to use matx.
One worry is the heat factor so was looking at some powerful fans. The one place I know where to get them from is our dyanatron supplier but I am left very confused. You always see on fans they use 0.3amp/12v (for example) but how much does that work out to be at the final power usage? this goes for the same in watts. Are fans something you have to worry about in the long run or do they make a non exsiting dent into a racks amp usage?

Any recommendations for 2u e55xx lga 1366 cpu fans? We recently put together a few systems with passive supermicro heatsinks on those cpu's and they keep overheating. I can't seem to find any decent 2u active fan solutions? What is everyone else using?

I am writing a few articles about Virtual Private servers and their advantages over regular shared hosting or dedicated servers.
As such Im looking for some case studies from users of vps who found that a vps hosting option was particualrly right for them and why.
Often a couple of sentances to illustrate your point will be enough for me to work with. Naturally there will be a link to the site that your vps was useful if you wish.
Please feel free to reply here or pm me your experiences.

We have a large number of the 2U SC832 and SC833 cases from Supermicro that have been real workhorses over the years and some have had various motherboards in them as time went by. All of them are 5-7 years old and we would like to keep using them, but are concerned about the fans in the power supplies getting worn out and failing. Anyone have the source for good high quality fans that would work in these 400 and 550 watt single power supplies?
Anyone have an idea of what the normal life of one of these power fans is? All of them have been in good datacenters from there first use.
Since I know there are a lot of Supermicro users on this forum I figured this would be the best place to ask.

With all the high power servers/blade servers, the 40A (@ 110V) power limit is way too small. I am wondering if there is any colo space targeted for high density application, e.g. with 10 KW/cab limit for 60A @ 208V power drops. Does anybody know of such high density colocation space? East coast is preferred.

We have about 50 Cpanel servers in our own AS with two upstream providers. On the cpanel servers we use the following IPs in the /etc/resolv.conf:
1. IP of the cpanel server
2. DNS IP of the 1st upstreamprovider
3. DNS IP of the 2nd upstreamprovider
I realized, that the upstreampoviders nameserver are not answering that fast and therefore I was thinking to make my own DNS Server, which I could use additionaly after the IP of the cpanel server.
Is this a good idea or is it not necessary? If it is a good idea, which dns deamon would be recommended? If we build this server, maybe would be also nice if we could offer DNS as a single service. Is there any solution where we could create user accounts where user could manage there own dns zones?

I am trying to decide to run my heavy database community site over at a new host but am looking to create a good package customed for high bandwidth.
I can decide from going with ONE Dual Quad-Core 2.0 Processor(4 gigs of ram) or TWO Intel Xeon 3210 2.1 GHz Quad Core Processor servers(4 gigs of ram each) with a Virtual Rack Container.
With having both the lower servers on the virtual rack, will the site manage with the same power as the Dual Quad Core since it is on a rack?

I paid for a server with GeekRack.net 8 days ago, and have seen no sign of the server being setup.
Now I know they are just a Burst.net reseller, they don't own or order the hardware or even have physical access to the servers, they simply get 25% off Burst.net and just resell their servers. That said you'd expect at least some sort of notification on when the server would be ready by, especially by now, right?

Using Red Hat EL4 with Apache 2
Is there any way to setup the server to ignore case-sensitivity? For example:
[url] is the same as
[url] or
[url]
Regardless of what is upper or lower case that it goes to the same directory.

I figured this would be the place to ask this question as the parts Im using are ex-server :-))..
Basically, I've purchased an old dual xeon board with matching xeons and I'm after a case. However the motherboard is EATX, and dosent seem to fit any of my ATX cases.
So, what case should I go for? Im trying to make it a cheap as possible.. Also I live in the UK.
I saw, this case. I figured for that price I cant go wrong. But will it fit an EATX?

upgrade fails often with severe issues.
My server had issues and it took me 3 days to solve it.
Plesk gives only paid support and not wanting to pay them more then the license I just bought 2 months ago I read the forum threads and found a work around that finally worked.
If you are considering to upgrade - please check out their forums for issues first as it's very common to have them...

I'm planning on replacing my current celery server with Core 2 Duo using PDSMI+ board. My colo contract is for a 1U, so I need a 1U case. I'm looking for a cheap 4 SATA hotswap case for it.
Anyone know of any other case that fits the requirement and is cheaper than the SC813MT-300C chassis? (looks like going price for this case is just over $250.)

I'm reeling right now after my shared hosting has been down for more than 24 hours (and this isn't one of the super-cheapies, it's in the $20-$30/month range)
In the future I'd really like to be protected against this kind of outage... I know downtime is inevitable with any host, so I'm wondering if it's possible to have some kind of failover system. Maybe I could get a second account with a bargain basement host (<$10/month) and keep it relatively up to date with a mirror of my site. But I don't know how I could manage the DNS so it went to the second host in the even of a failure on the first....
Does this kind of redundancy exist as some product in the industry that I don't know about (is that what "colocation" is?)? Is it likely that my host has the ability/willingness to redirect my domain (302 or something) in times of trouble like this?

I am moving one of my site from windows to centOS hosting. The problem is that the new server is case sensitive for folders and file names. I had all my folders in capital letters previously and also all my links inside pages(www.domain.com/FOLDER/Page-Name.php).
I have nearly 1000 pages and most of them are indexed in google in this format

Now i have renamed all my folders, files and links inside the files to absolute lowercase.

What is the worst case scenario that one can face if they switched all the sudden from mysql 4.1 to mysql 5 ? Are both similar to each other? Anyone have experiences to share maybe as to what happened when you switched from 4.1 to 5?
I am kinda worried as to breaking up sites and wrecking havoc (i got bunch of wordpress blogs, vb forums, smf forum and phbb too)
Also what can one expect if moving from say 4.1 based hosting to version 5 based hosting ? Say if someone has backup from 4.1 version and they try to restore it on a host with 5?

I purchased a Tyan S3970 (Tomcat h1000e) motherboard with a Supermicro SC820 Case, 'cuz I got a good deal on the combo. After I purchased it I realized that the back-cover does not match up, and the connector wires are short. (ie. The NIC/power LED wires do not reach the connector). Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

I setup Apache 2.2.21 on a Win7 (32-Bit) Desktop with SVN 1.5.6 and WebSVN 2.3.3.
My problem lies with navigating to view the repository thru websvn.
I only want my users to be able to access the websvn thru this url, 'myservername/websvn' but they are able to access it thru other variations of the url, eg.'myservername/WebSvn', 'myservername/wEbSvN', 'myservername/WebSVN'.
I am using CheckCaseOnly but it still does not solve the problem. Here's the code of my config file for websvn,
#Alias /websvn/ "C:/Program Files/Apache Software Foundation/Apache2.2/htdocs/websvn/"
<Directory /websvn/> Options FollowSymLinks CheckCaseOnly on
#Redirect any requests to this page to the page u want FallbackResource listing.php Order allow, deny Allow from all <IfModule mod_php4.c>
[Code] ....

I have a small issue that's probably easy to answer. If I upload a zip file to a Linux server, and run this command via SSH:
Code:
unzip -a name_of_zip.zip
Although it does unzip the directories as expected, it makes all file names and folders lowercase. This is a problem when trying to install software that relies on case sensitive names.
Does anyone know what command tells the server to retain the file names and not alter them?

I got a good deal on the Supermicro SC822T-R550LPB case, and then bought a Tyan Motherboard(S3970).
Unfortunately, the IO shield that comes w/the board does not fit the case, and the one from the case does not fit the mboard. A set of FAN cables do not reach the mboard either. Does anyone know of any place that sells these parts?

Having made a switch from a Windows server to Linux to use Wordpress with better results, many external links are now pointing to invalid files because of case sensitivity.
Anyone know a formula e.g. (mod spelling & how to apply it) that can make it case insensitive?
If not, is there any harm in leaving two copies of each file e.g. cognitive-therapy and Cogntive-Therapy?

I dont mind if the documentation has no screenshoots but the technical explanations must be sound in order to understand how to configure RHCS.

it would appear that Iron Mountain ( www.ironmountain.com ) has filed a trademark infringement suit against InterMountain Mortgage also known as Iron Mountain Hosting ( www.imountain.com ) regarding the use of "Iron Mountain" and various colors and service marks.
I don't think this will come as a surprise to many people given how similar these two names are, along with the fact that Iron Mountain have been involved in IT well before InterMountain Mortgage decided to take the plunge into hosting.
It's going to be an interesting trial by jury to say the least...
