Server For Audio/Video Website
Jun 2, 2009
I am having an Audio/Video website where I am giving facility to the users to watch online videos and use Audio Service, also with a download feature (It is not Live service)
Now I am very much concern where to get started from, currently I have hosted a website with hostgator on a trial basis as it is shared so it took me 30 minutes to upload a 20-25mb files and I checked on youtube I uploaded a 13mb file only in 4 minutes, is it because of fast servers?must be! (and yeh with same speed, same internet connection, so internet speed not an issue here)
Here are the details.
New website so not sure what will be the traffic like, could be like hundreds of users (not thousands I think) initially per month.
Data to be uploaded aprox 200GB
Video files can be like 15-20MB (or 20-30 minutes)
Audio (3-5MB files)
Target users (Could be from anywhere, europe or u.s mainly)
Now do I need a streaming server or dedicated server with streaming service from the provider? Any fast streaming service I could get under $100?

I have no intention of trying to make some video/file sharing website.
Some people might recognize me as being somewhat cynical in my replies to the people who post these sorts of messages.
What I'm curious about is, after having occasionally told people "You'll make significantly more money throwing the money you intend to waste on this project into a traditional investment..." I still see new people every week asking for the same help.
Now, I understand very few people are going to give up their dream and just throw in the towel because some random guy says their dream is stupid, they are stupid, and may god have mercy on their soul...
But, I don't (always) necessarily try to dissuade people from starting this sort of project simply to be a prick.
What I'd like to find out is if there are any people out there who've created a successful video/file sharing website who'd like to help others out...
Like, what advice they would have for people who want to get into starting a similar site.
How much bandwidth does your site use?
What's the URL?
How are you making money from the site?
How long did it take for your site to make a profit?
etc etc...
Alternatively, if you've tried to start a video/file sharing website and given up on those plans...
Why did you end up giving up?
What problems did you run into?

My website provides streaming videos of live events through a third party software called Sopcast.
Currently i have hosted it on a shared server which cannot high CPU load when an event occurs. The hosting company takes down my website.
I am looking for need a solution by which thousand of visitors can watch the video at any given time. The streaming videos are not hosted on my website. I need a dedicated server that can manage high CPU load.

I would like to know if there is anything specific I need to know before I open a video streaming site (Examples: Veoh, dailymotion, etc etc). Are there any laws or rules I should follow?
Plus regarding the copyrighted materials I remember there is a US law (I don't live in the US but whatever) that says after you get an email from the company that holds the copyrights regarding a video or whatever you've got some days (? or hours?) in order to remove that content and show "good will" following the rules (Safe Harbor) and they don't "harm" you. Anyone know more regarding this issue?
And one last thing. If I don't store users information (IPs, ISP, etc) which will show that they uploaded the video, in a situation of a copyrighted content will I get in trouble since I can't prove I didn't upload the files?
And last but not least any suggestions on the software and of course the most important the hosting company I should go with?

I'm creating a video sharing network. It's a project that I've invested quite a bit of money in.
At the moment my hosting (other projects) are with Rackspace UK purely because their hosting is fantastic.
The majority of my traffic will be U.S. based so I'm looking for a solution there where bandwidth is much cheaper (than the UK).
This is a serious project and I expect a couple of hundred users to start testing the site from day 1. Obviously as we grow we will need more bandwidth etc.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of this kind of project and if so, what advice you could offer relating to hosting solutions.
We must be with a hosting company that offers lightning support. That's why I'm currently with Rackspace but their hosting is very expensive.

I am planning to start a web-site in which video-sharing(video-hosting) is going to be the primary concept. I need support for a very CPU and RAM instensive program called 'ffmpeg'. I also need a minimum of 2.5TB of disk space and 15TB of bandwidth every month. I tried looking for an ideal host all over the web, but I am more confused than ever.

I am having a video sharing website designed. It's not going to be too busy to start with but I appreciate it will use a lot of bandwidth. I wont be offering the embed option so maybe that will limit the strain.
Any ideas on a good US-based host that can offer me a dedicated and managed solution with fast and friendly support? Any ideas of a monthly cost for a start-up?

I'm interested in making a site which would stream video game (RPG) audio to users through flash. I have long searched for a service that I could use to listen to that odd track from final fantasy 8 for example (and not some cheap midi) without going through hundreds of links etc. So I'm thinking of making one myself.
I know there are sites that host mass video game mp3s (gh.ffshrine.org) and also remix and host video game music (ocremix.org) but I don't know if what they are doing is OK by normal hosting standards.
if it is, <snipped>.

An interesting question recently came up during a discussion which I wasn't too sure of the answers / replies being discussed - perhaps some members may be kind enough to enlighten me on.
The question is: What would the preferred / best practice be for a website wanting to stream audio (say some sort of music they have created) be?
A) Stream it from their own dedicated server (any advantages / downsides)? (assuming bandwidth is unmetered @ 100Mbps)
B) Stream it through a streaming media provider (any advantages / downsides)?
C) Make it availalbe as a download as opposed to streaming it from their own server?
Now, the issue is that the content is commercial - i.e. users wanting to download / listen to it would need to pay a fee - i'm not sure if streaming providers would handle payment processing, etc?
Any finally, assume the delivery platform to be a LAMP environment.

we're LearnOutLoud and we're currently running out of space on our 1.2 terabyte server filled up 90% with audio files. We'll be expanding in the coming years with the audio files that we'll be adding and we're looking for the best option for storing our audio files.
We're talking with our ISP about getting an 8 drive chassey with 8 500GB drives for a total of 4.0 terabytes with a RAID setup giving us about 3.5 terabytes to work with. It will cost us in the $3000-$5000 range and we're just not sure if we want to put that up at the moment, as this growth will be over time and we may not even need all this space.
What we'll be storing on this new server would be just audio files (audio books that are purchased on our site). They are not accessed very heavily so we don't need to concern ourselves too much with processing speed or bandwidth.
We're looking into some other solutions for storage such as Amazon S3, Media Temple, and some other ones. We don't need a lightning fast expensive content delivery network like Limelight Networks, as their storage costs are way too much. We want something we can grow and pay as we grow.

What of servers are used by hosts offering packages with this type of support?
I've read that streaming can be made via web server and streaming media server. The first type has only one advantage and this is that it allows to utilize existing infrastructure, while the second type offers more effective network throughput and (what's more important for me as an end-user) allows for better video and audio quality and support of the advanced features.
Now looking at the hosting plans how do I tell which type of server is used by the host?
I'm interested in this particular plan

I am using DDOS Deflate
[url]
I have a problem with NO_OF_CONNECTIONS.
The default is 150
For example, if a website has 200 thumbnails in one page, then the user will get banned.
But in my case, each time a user have only 1 connection(He only access 1 flv file each time).
So, is that safe for me to decrease the number to 20.
I can see a lot of IP having more than 80 connections, which I think they are ddos attack.

We have found that we need to limit the amount of cpu uage by users on our video share server. On this server we currently have 20 users on a sharred plan. Thought that the obvious BW usage would be the biggest challenge, as it turns out we havent gone over the 2 TB that we have.
We have come up with an encoding process that uses the 264 codec and gives us excellent results in terms of quality but is very cpu intensive to the point of really slowing down the server when 10 or more users simutaneously are encoding their videos.
Can someone suggest a script that would allows us to limit the file size in terms of MB/GB that each user could upload per month.
So for example a client pays 10.00 per month and we wanted to limit their uploads to a total of 900 MB per month vs the client that is paying 50.00 per month who would have the ability to upload say 8 GB per month.
Cento 5
c-panel
Dual Quad Core 2.0 ghz
6Mb Ram
1TB HDD
2 TB of BW

I am having pop-ups issues on my website. Previously I tried to solve it out but wasn't able to because due to 64 bit of Windows 2003 most of the softwares were having compatibility issues. But now when I have switched the server to 32-bit, on the new server, the website is still having the pop-ups. I have tried a couple of softwares to detect them, but in vain.
I am getting out of ideas now. Can someone help or suggest me something in this regard?

My hosting company has been great. The server is in a secure place, but I can't help but wonder: what if a bomb hits there or something? What could I do? With all the websites I host, I would like to see what kind of backup plan there could be. Is there a way to have a server on the other side of the world automatically be switched to if it were to go down?

I've been setting up name server for my website. I'm using Centos 5, but never get it works.
Here what i have done so far:
yum install named
Then i create named.conf in /etc
PHP Code:
options { version "Version Secured"; directory "/var/named"; /* * If there is a firewall between you and nameservers you want * to talk to, you might need to uncomment the query-source * directive below. Previous versions of BIND always asked * questions using port 53, but BIND 8.1 uses an unprivileged * port by default. */ // query-source address * port 53; recursion no;};logging { category lame-servers { null; };};//// a caching only nameserver config//controls { inet 127.0.0.1 allow { localhost; } keys { rndckey; };};zone "." I created glueg99.com.db in /var/named
PHP Code:
$TTL 14400@ IN SOA ns1.glueg99.com. root.glueg99.com.
